"Sundara" is a New York-based salon dedicated exclusively to the art and science of sunless tanning. With the 2005 opening of its flagship space at David Ryan Salon in Hell's Kitchen, Sundara's mission is simple: to offer a consistent, natural-looking bronze complexion year-round. Sundara is dedicated to customizing a sunless tan to the specific needs of its clients. Technicians are able to vary the shade, depth and colour depending on the client's preference, skin type and/or season of the year. Sundara's formulations contain precious botanical extracts and intensive hydrating properties that deeply nourish and revitalize the skin. The salon's inviting atmosphere, knowledgeable client service, and flawless results make Sundara the most sophisticated airbrush tanning experience in NYC. Sundara is an ancient Sanskrit word that means "beautiful."
This tanning salon, although it is not cheap i think it is worth it.
Leaves a great glow, if you moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!!!! it will last a good 10 days. The place itself is nicely decorated, clean and the technician is very professional and knows what she is doing!!!
Pros: leaves you with a nice glow.
Cons: pricey.

I'm from the U.K. and recently visited New York, where I had a splendid time, thanks in part to this little gem of a tanning salon, which made me look breathtaking and a lot thinner. :) I researched the tanning places before my trip, booked an appointment at Sundara, and was very pleased with the results. I received lots of compliments. My color was absolutely right, and no issues with streaking or fading. The service was excellent and I also purchased the body butter, which smells delicious. highly recommended . . .
Pros: color, service, atmosphere

I had been to several airbrush tanning salons before finding Sundara, and I can confidently say that it is by far the best of any that I have been to. Natalie is truly amazing! She is an expert technician and makes clients feel at ease from the moment that they walk in the door. After a Sundara airbrush tan people always ask me where I went on vacation, and I find that I even look slimmer and more toned. Sundara is the best tanning salon in the city, and I cannot reccomend it enough!

Nathalie is the reason to make a visit! A total professional, warm and friendly, Nathalie goes above and beyond for her clients. The tan is amazing and natural, a look I just cannot get on my own bring incredibly fair skinned. I highly recommend Sundara, and Nathalie!!!
Pros: A great tan, applied by a Master Technician, Nathalie!
Cons: no cons, except parking is tricky, but its worth the trip.

Being very fair skinned, I rarely go in the sun anymore and definitely have plenty of sunscreen on hand. I have a wedding to go to and wanted some color. I have done both mystic and had the "airbrush" and am a fan of both.
My experience at Sundara was fantastic. I was a little concerned about the color, that it wouldn't be too dark for me, but it looks great, much better than a Mystic tan.
Natalie was great. She explained the process and told me the do's and don'ts for caring for my tan.
I am extremely please with the results and highly recommend.
My only complaint would be that I purchased a ten session package, there was an offer to receive a free product with a five session package, but not the ten. That seems a little unfair, but doesn't make me want to rate the experience less than the five stars Sundara deserves.
Pros: Knowledgeable staff, clean facilities, no pressure to buy products

Sundara is absolutely amazing. The color here is as close to natural as you can get. I am very fair skinned and have tried many sunless products, booths, and airbrushings and this place beats them all. Natalie, the technician, is fantastic and has a great personality. She will make you feel very comfortable and will adjust the level of DHA and thickness applied to you. She knows exactly what she is doing. The place is also very clean and contemporary. Don't listen to any negative reviews posted....I know my tanning and this place does it right.
Pros: Great color, fast, great service, clean, modern space.
Cons: none

Very well designed, price competitive spray tan spa. Best I've been to in the city. Heated drying room (brilliant). Fantastic lighting. Clean. Highly skilled technician. I'm the whitest woman in NYC and have been disappointed by previous spray tans I've gotten. Not so here. Got the lightest shade possible and I looked naturally sunkissed and not a streak in sight. Can't praise this place enough. Do not wear underwear and wear a super loose black dresss home with no bra. You won't be sorry!
Pros: Clean/Skilled/Comfortable
Cons: None

Consistently the best spray tan I've had. this is the only salon in the city that specializes in just spray tan and their experitse shows. Natalie is a real pro and gives great, even coverage. fade is clean, color is stunning. i would recommend Sundara as the best airbrush tan
Pros: color, salon, natalie

I read in US Weekly that Mariah Carey is a client of Sundara's - so I thought, well she always has that great looking color. is Sundara her secret? sure enough, I went in and met Mariah's famous spray tan technician, Natalie. The service was spectacular - the color looked very natural and deep, better than my real suntan. I went out that night in a sleek black dress and looked so amazing - got tons of compliments. I am now a Sundara devotee - I even bought a gift card. this is a wonderful salon!
Pros: celebrity's favorite, intimate atmosphere, professional

having been to a few of tother tanning salons that do spray tan, a friend recommended Sundara - she told me they had a really good reputation and Sundar was in the all of the top magaziones, like InStyle and Glamour. this is a really nice salon, and an intimate sidestreet in the Tehater District / Hell's Kitchen. The technicain Natalie made me feel so comfortable (after all, I was completely without clothes). The procedure was fast - was in and out in about 20 minutes. I also bought the tan extender and my tan l;asted the full 10 days, as Nataliue said that it would. No fading issues or patchy weirdness. Sundara lives up to its reputation
Pros: great color, nice service, upscale salon
Cons: only one location

I googled best spray tan nyc, and after do some research on the others, decided to try this salon. The space is located in Hell's Kitchen, not far from the Broadway theaters, but I wasn't prepared for the high theatre involved in getting a spray tan. Sundara transformed my pale complexion into a perfect bronze. The color was deep, but not too dark, and just the right shade of golden-reddish brown. I haven't looked this good with a tan, well, ever. The technician Natalie is a real pro and the salon is quite intimate and cozy. It was all around a positive experience and I plan to buy one of their package deals when I return. Highly recommended, especially in the coming summer months.

this is the best place in the city for a spray tan. once you go to Sundara, there's no going back to the other salons. consistent, beautiful tans are their specialty. highly recommended!

A co-worker recommended Sundara as the top of its class in NY tanning salons for airbrushing. I didn't want to leave anything to chance, because I had a bad experience using the spray booths before. But this was way different. The tech customized the color to match my skin type and the time she took to do that- well, it really showed. The color was stunning; same color I turn when I tan under the sun. Sundara's salon itself is very nice, very spa-like and sophisticated. And the customer service was very pleasant and informative. My co-worker was impressed when she saw me come in - now she's headed back to Sundara herself. Great find!
Pros: way better than spray booths; great skin product line

I'm from California, been to Sunset tan, been to Brazil Bronze dowen in Soho, - but this is the go-to salon for NYC's best spray tan. you won't be disappointed. Very natural, great service.
Pros: perfect bronze color

I read the reviews here and was impressed so I made an appointment to see if it was true what they were saying. Sundara delivered. Great little salon, nice and knowledgable technician and the results were fabulous - my husband thought I looked amazing and it was a great confidence booster. I also bought their Coconut Boddy butter - it smells terrific. I will be back.
Pros: perfect spray tan
Posted 03/18/08
I have been to several of the salons in new york and california, have had some nice spray tans in my day, but nothing has compared to Sundara. the color is phenomenal - it looks better than any real suntan I ever had when i was a teen. has those subtle red undertones that match my brown hair. They really nailed it - after a consultation with the technician, they specially mized the solution and voila, I am now in my fourth day going strong and I had to write a review. bought their monthyl package - 3 sessions for 160 - great deal.
Pros: best color, great little salon hideway, pleasant girl
Cons: no downtown location

i keep coming back to Sundara after they wowed me on the first visit. i heard a lot about this place before i went from a co-worker, tried it out the first time and it was wonderful. great color, even fade,. Bought the package and have been back now 3 times. Best part is that they are consistent. they keeep your formula on file and it looks great every time. bravo . and the girl Natalie rocks!
Pros: BEAUTIFUL TAN, CONSISTENT
Posted 03/17/08
My color is fabulous, and it's really all about the color when it comes to spray tanning. too much yellow or orange aint'a good thing. Sundara gives you that reddish / gold brown look, very natural and sultry. And they customize the tan. there is a consultation before they decide which solution is best to match your skin type. Natalie the technician is a sweetheart and she's very informative. Sundara is the gem of spray tan salons - a cozy little spa tucked away in Hell's Kitchen and I definitely recommend it.
Pros: color, color, color + great salon and staff
Cons: only one location (west side)

Just went the other night,,,, I am already addicted to this,,, I got the winter bronze,,, and it just gave me the glow I needed,,, this place is a no brainer,,, I have tried everything.
The only downside is the hands,, not as great as I wished but good enough,,, making an appointment for next week

After recommendation from a trusted friend, I tried Sundara in preparation for a valentine's day date. Magic! The technician was very knowledgable and made the whole process enjoyable. She asked about my skin type and tanning history and proceeded to customize a solution to match. The color was stunning. I walked out of their cozy salon feeling on top of the world. I showered the same night before I went to bed (8 hours after the session). Next day, I had a date for valentines and the compliments did not stop coming. Was a great night out, and I definitely got a boost from Sundara. Great thing was, the tan wasn't too dark, just gave me this beautiful glow that complemented my blue eyes. I will be going to buy a package, which is a great deal considering the luxury treatment. highly recommended
Pros: beautiful color, expert staff, cozy intimate salon
Cons: none

After trying another place in the city - i looked on citysearch and saw that Sundara had some great reviews. I thought I would give them a try. I noticed when the girl was done spraying me that I looked very orange - I asked her about this and she said it looked very natural. I went home and my husband asked what happened to you? I started crying and took a shower to scrub it all off. Money wasted here. I would not go back here again.
Pros: None
Cons: Color was bad, Staff didn't seem to care I was upset
Posted 02/17/08
I wish I didn't go here. I did not have the same experience the other reviewers had. My color was very orange and streaky. They asked me several times to write a review on citysearch about my experience. Too bad it wasn't a good one. This is one place that is off my list.
Posted 02/17/08
I've been a client of Sundara for over two years. Tried a few others, but no salon has matched Sundara's expertise. It's the only salon in the city that specializes in airbrush tanning year-round and their ability to customize the tan is really wonderful. My color is always flawless and I've had Natalie switch up the solution few times according to the time of the year. If you want airbrush tanning done right, this is definitely the place to go.
Pros: stunning color, great customer service, competitive pricing
Cons: none
Posted 02/03/08
Let me start off by saying that Sundara took very good care of me. I was so nervous about airbrush tanning to begin with, and I had so many questions. Natalie made me feel so comfortable and she used a color that matched me perfectly. I got so many compliments on how natural it looked, and my boyfriend loved it. I would definately do it again for a special occasion.
Pros: The place was very nice looking and staff was great
Cons: fadded a little quicker than I expected.

I wanted to get a spray tan this winter because I'm pale as a sheet, but was worried about looking unnatural walking around NYC with a summer tan, especially because my co-workers know I haven't been on vacation. I explained this to Natalie, the technician at Sundara, and she told me about a solution called "Winter Bronze" that was sure to give me a subtle glow without all of the "where have you been?" questions. Well, she nailed it, I've had 6 days of winter bronze bliss: just got enough color to give me that healthy look, but not too many weird stares and questions about where i've gone. Definite thumbs up for Sundara.
Pros: subtle glow for the winter, attentive customer service
Cons: none

I've had two airbrush tans at Sundara: The first was a year ago and simply fabulous. The color, how it faded, it was so realistic and amazing. I felt like a bronzed goddess and was eager to do it again for my next tropical vacation.
I went again this year and was very disappointed. I prepped the same way -- exfoliating, no moisturizers/deoderant, etc. The technician said she used the exact same formula on me as the year before (they keep a record of your custom color.) However, the results were painfully different. At first the bronzer turned oompa loompa orange. I didn't worry at that point, I was just home packing for my vacation and knew that the bronzer washes off with your first shower 8 hours later. But then I took the initial shower (about 9 hours after), and I was a jaundiced YELLOW. And it was UNEVEN. My wrists, ankles and inner thighs (mortifying) were darker than the rest of my body. Then two days into my vacation my shins started to get white speckles, it was crazy looking. Finally, thankfully, the tan faded most every where -- except for my inner thighs! I was embarassed to be seen in my bathing suit and had to wear a sarong.
I can only think that there was a mistake in the tanning solution. I prepped for both tans the same way and went on an identical vacation as the year before, but my two experiences could not have been more different. I don't think I will go back, I was pretty mortified this time around.
On the plus side: Natalie, the technician, is amazing and will make you feel very comfortable while posing in some compromising positions. Thanks to her, both spraying experiences were professional and relaxed. I think there was just something terribly wrong wth that second batch of tanner.

I went to Sundara after seeing the rave reviews and I DEFINITELY have to agree with them. I've done airbrush tanning before and Sundara is the best out of all the tanning salons I've tried. It was streak free and left me with a golden bronze glow (none of the orangey color) and faded evenly. I would definitely recommend this place and would go back here in a heartbeat!
Pros: service, color
Cons: small waiting room
Posted 10/08/07
I went to Sundara for my first spray tan ever before my friend's wedding that I was in. The staff was really helpful in educating me about it and helping me decide what shade I wanted to be customized to. I walked away with an incredible tan than didnt fade for about seven days. More so, the makeup artist for the wedding commented on what a great skin tone I had. I have seen other spray tans that looked fake and streaky (especially around the hands) and mine was flawless. I can't wait to go back.
Pros: Ambiance, Professional Staff, Great Finished Product

I have been a loyal client of Sundara for almost a year and decided to finally write a review. I just feel appreciative that a place like Sundara exists because they really have the whole sunless tanning game down to a science. This salon is a beautiful boutique in Hell's Kitchen that specializes in airbrushing. The technicians - Natalie, Jessie and Christina (yes, I have tried them all) are very knowledgable and take the time to get it right. They keep your specially mixed "recipe" on file, and on separate visits, offer to add a little red or a little more bronze. They alter the solutions on the basis of the season - so no, you won't have people asking where in the Caribbean you've been - they just say "you look radiant". I wish they had more locations because I live on the upper west side; but the travel time is worth it. Kudos to Sundara - the ultimate custom spray tan.
Pros: custom color matching, expertise, salon atmosphere, package deals
Cons: only one location

I have done the Mystic Tanning thing a lot--it's a good, safe, quick way to get a tan when you need one before a vacation or during the summer. However, given the Big Day, I didn't want to leave my wedding skin to the booth spray tan fates, so I searched out whom would be considered NYC's best spray-by-hand tanner. After much research, I was SO pleased when I found Sundara and Natalie. The salon is stylish, welcoming, and super clean, and the tan I received from her was *perfect*--beautiful shade and no strange spots (my feet and knees are usually a little funky after spray booths, but these were sunkissed perfectly!). I highly recommend Sundara and Natalie for any brides looking for a perfect faux tan from a friendly professional.

I got my air-brush tan yesterday and I am thrilled with the result. I have fair skin and needed some color for prom, nothing drastic, and the tan is amazing! No one can believe this is an air-brush tan because they swore I'd turn out looking orange..ha, they're wrong! Natalie is so nice and professional and definitely makes you feel comfortable. I highly recommend Sundara.
Pros: real looking tan, not orange!
Posted 06/06/07
I love Sundara for the color. The technician takes her time to consult with you and get the color you want - and that matches your skintype. It's worth the extra price to customize. And they are very friendly - it's a fun atmosphere. I thought they wer ekind of expensive for one session, but the package deals are great.
Pros: Beautiful color
Cons: pricey

I went for a tan last summer. They were really nice and friendly... I went on a Thusday afternoon. Saturday morning I went to the pool and I was in the water for maybe 5 minutes. When I got out I was totally streaky. My tan looked great - for not even two days... Why spend so much money on that?
Pros: Really nice and friendly
Cons: Tan streaked after 2 days

I am a model and I shoot a lot of lingerie and swimsuits. I shoot for clients such as Victoria's Secret, Warners, Vassarette and Sports Illustrated. It is required that I be tan for these shoots, I love my milky complexion and would never want to subject it to harmful UVA/UVB Rays. As an alternative I turned to sunless tanning. I found Sundara right here on City Search and have been frequenting Sundara now for almost two years and have never been disappointed. They are able to customize my color for the season I am shooting (for example: darker for swimsuit, lighter for lingerie) My clients have always been pleased and are shocked when I tell them it is an airbrush tan. They are so used to models turning orange from sunless tanners that they are afraid to suggest them. Since I have been going to Sundara and have had such fantastic results, many of my colleagues have also followed suit and have been equally as satisfied. As a completely satisfied customer, I am honored to write this review and would highly recommend Sundara for an even, natural looking tan every time!
Pros: Consistent streak-free, natural looking tan.
Posted 05/18/07
I heard about Sundara from a friend months ago, but wasn't until I read the review in Allure that I decided to finally give this airbrush tanning thing a try. I was really amazed at the results, and the process itself was kinf of fun, The technicain really put me at ease during the session. She gave me this consultation and prescribed a color for my skin. It worked wonderfully - the color was perfect. Nobody could have guessed that this was a faux tan. I think it even looked better than when I used to tan under the sun. I will be back.,
Pros: beautiful color, fun process great package deals
Cons: none

After using self tanners for years I found Sundara on Citysearch and tried it for the first time. Natalie was very proffessional and the sweatest, and I was able to enjoy my vacation with a nice golden tan that lasted 6 days without yellow palms, streaks and missed spots. I recommended to my friends and they loved it as well.
Pros: No gimics, it is what it says it is
Posted 05/15/07
The girl was great! She did exactly what I asked her to do. The tan looked incredible will go there again! I did not get any strikes.
Posted 05/15/07
after using selftanning products for ever, and having tell tale orange palms , I went to a bunch of salons and always looked kinda orangy. i read about this in 2 magazines, i think allure and maybe beautynewsnyc. all i can say Its worth it. the tan lasts 6 days is perfectly applied, brown and natural . They have the nicest technician and thank goodness for heated fans to dry. i will recommend to everyone!

I went to Sundara to get myself a little bronzed for a wedding. It came out really great, better than i expected. It is a litle pricey but well worth it. And it fades evenly too. Its very natural looking, not at all orange. Everyone thought i had just came home from an island vacation. I loved it most on my legs, and it hides every flaw. I'll def be heading there again very soon.
Posted 04/27/07
I read about Sundara online in beautynewsnyc and they said great things about it so i gave it a try. I am really pale and don't tan well, even on vacation, because i use so much sunblock and burn easily. I was so happy to have a warm brown tan. The technician Natalie is very nice and really made the whole experience fun. I got home and was amazed at how great the color looked. later that night i went to a party and everyone thought I had just come back from an island.the last time I went for an airbrush tan i went somewhere else and they turned me orange, so I cannot tell you how much better sundara is in everyway. I do wish there were more locations, as i don't live near the salon.
Pros: amazing color, professional service, WOW
Cons: hard to get to location. salon a little small
Posted 02/04/07
Natalie is simply amazing! I went into Sundara not knowing exactly how tan I wanted to be, I'm a little pale so anything too dark would be extremely obvious...so I discussed my concerns with Natalie and she customized just the right color...it suited me perfectly! The shop is cute and quaint and the staff is very professional....what more could a girl ask for?! I'm so excited I don't have to wear make-up! I feel great walking around the city with a natural glow.

A++++++. I've always been really scared to getting a spray/airbrush tan out of fear of looking orange and un-natural. after doing extensive research on the internet I saw excellent reviews from Sundara. Needless to say, I tried it out and I"m estatic about the results. Everyone couldnt believe that I got an airbrush tan, they all thought I just got back from vacation!. The results are so natural and long-lasting. I got tanned on last thurs and I'm still incredibly tan. I do not have any streak marks! I defintely plan on going back again in the near future. Natalie the technician was very accommodating and works w/ you to get the exact tan you want. I"m so glad i found this place!
Pros: Natural looking tan, nice environment and staff
Cons: pricey but package deals are worth it

Originally from Ohio, I find it hard to find a reasonably priced tanning salon in NYC. I came across Sundara and read nothing but good reviews about customers' experience with the service. Having not tanned in 2 months, I decided to try it out. Saying I was impressed with the experience would be an understatement. The service was quick and professional, and the tan looked incredible. Natalie was extremely nice and made my experience very comfortable.
I recommend that you wear dark colored socks and very loose fitting clothing. My light jacket got some of color on it, and my white socks showed the color as well. The color also ran on my feet a little, I imagine because I didn't remove my socks right when I got home. (These are my own mistakes, just some advice for those that decide to go)
A++. I HIGHLY recommend Sundara and will definitely return.
Pros: Gorgeous tan, fast service
Cons: Slightly expensive, tan fades after a week
Posted 01/06/07
went to Sundara before my florida vacation and absolutely loved the color. faded evenly and lasted 7 days. Their technician, Natalie, is so professional and does this with such expertise, that I don't think I'd ever go anywhere else for a sunless tan. highly recommended
Pros: beautiful color, professional

wanted a sun-kissed glow to prepare for a Caribbean vacation. I have melanoma, so the tanning beds are no longer an option. I did my homework and tried Sundara (believe me, I was nervous). Natalie put me at ease - what great customer service. The results were astounding, better than what I expected. Lasted for the full week of my vacation, though was stronger in the first 4 days. highly recommend Sundara
Pros: great technician, even application, natural color
Posted 11/29/06
After lots of recommendations from different friends, I finally tried Sundara. I was previously addicted to Brazil Bronze, but thought I'd give another service a try. Was very THRILLED with the customer service, atmosphere and final results after my visit to Sundara. The technician, Natalie, was first-rate. Her knowledge base about sunless tanning far surpassed other technicians I've dealt with. The results were pure natural, lasted a full week, and faded evenly (which I find is rare). I now have a new addiction. Do not miss out on this gem of a salon.
Pros: beautiful color, expert technician, nice packages
Posted 11/22/06
Not only did I have a fantastic tan for over a week, but the process itself was great: it was surprisingly quick, and Natalie made me feel 100% comfortable. My clothes were fine and the tan was perfectly even!
Posted 11/02/06
Sundara definitely exceeded my expectations. The tan was magnificent: great initial color that lasted for a week, no problems with fading, and no problems with running off onto my clothes. Tons of compliments. The service and overall experience at the salon was top-notch - very friendly technician (Natalie) and intimate salon atmosphere. This is definitely the place if you want to maintain that sun-kissed glow throughout the winter months. Also, go for their coconut body butter - it's awesome!
Pros: beautiful tan, great service, competitive package deals
Cons: none

I was so pleased with the experience I had at Sundara. I had never tried any type of airbrush tan or self-tanner before, so I was a little nervous. Natalie, the technician at Sundara, did a great job explaining everything and had such a sweet personality. The results were fantastic! I didn't want anything too dark or drastic, and Natalie just gave me a nice glow. She did a good job evening out my tan lines. I received several compliments from my co-workers as to how natural it looked. I like the results so much I am planning on doing another session right before my wedding.
Pros: Very friendly and knowlegeable staff; excellent results;
