I had a bad experience, got overcharged and the receptionist was very rude about it, but the manager made it right so I'm deleting the review. But I won't be going back.

This place sucks.
The atmosphere is not spa like at all. It's very cold and unwelcoming.
The therapists seem to have zero connection to the place and are somewhat robotic.

Recently I found the best place and person who can do wax for me quick and painless.
Oksana is excellent! She's knows her stuff when it comes to techniques.
Waxing is quick. I mean very very very quick.... I've had waxings all over NYC

I come to know about Nickel from Paris. the nickel spa in Paris in the trendy area of ""le Marais"" is very upscale. I go to the one in NYC often for my haircut, and massages and Mani/padi and such. it is decent but not as great as the one in Paris. the main difference is the staff. when you walk to Paris, the staff gave the place a sense of luxury a place you will get pampered. but NYC it feels like a regular place and sometime it feels a little bit dirty... but to their credits they have improved lately. and I still go there..
I like that it is 100% for men. so whether you are Gay, Straight or confused. you can feel a sense of manhood. and it is very very professional and respectable place. the staff are very professional and very courteous.

It's all about who you get. Yes it would be great if there're fountains and feng shui and cookies etc but if that's what you're looking for don't come here. This place is like a basement but bottom line the massage tables are very comfortable and my masseur David who does not come out of any page from GQ was one of the best I've ever had and I've had plenty. I don't go for manicures so can't help you there but body ask for David.

Nickel (be sure you say it correctly - Ni-KELL, not NI-ckel) spa for men is, well, for men. The experience I have with them is that I've bought gift certificates on a few occasions - for my husband twice and once for my boss - and it's been a smooth operation each time. The atmosphere is crisp & clean, metallic & slick. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the spa menu is expensive - but that's reasonable for a NYC spa.

I thought the staff were very friendly and helpful. They offered me the choice of tea or water. I chose the tea, which was only average. Then again, I wasn't here for the tea.

I would rather have a great massage at Nickel Spa rather than an average massage at any of the other places in the city that are all "prettied up" and over priced. The prices for the massage was very reasonable and well worth my coin.

Expected a real "spa" and was disappointed when I went for my massage appointment to learn that they
1) have no locker room (?!!)
2) have one gross shower you can use
3) offer very so-so massage
4) Once you go to the back where the massage/treatments are, the place is a complete dump
The whole point of a spa is to have a relaxing experience. I've never been to one where you can't change into a robe, and shower afterwards - even usually have a whirlpool.

A friend and I got haircuts here because the stylist at my regular salon was out that weekend. I had gotten a really great haircut at Nickel once before from a male stylist (Jay?), so figured it was safe. I was wrong! I left with the worst cut ever--way too short, wrong shape for my face, and my hair was thinned ("textured") so badly I actually could see my scalp! The stylist (Bella) was argumentative, rude, and refused to listen to what I wanted (Mind you, my regular stylist has cut my hair exactly the way I described to her for two years and it looks amazing!) Bella insisted her 12 yrs of experience made her an expert and that she knew what she was doing. I wanted to get up and leave, but was too polite. Too bad for me! The funny part is that she cut my friend's hair exactly the same way--despite his hair texture, face shape, etc., being totally different! We would have done better going to SuperCuts and saved more than half our money.

I've been going to Nickel on and off for a few years for massages and I've always been satisfied with my experience -- the courteous people, the clean space and the overall service, moreover the rates are extremely resaonsable for NYC or otherwise. Try it, I thiink you'll like it.

I think that some of the other reviewers of this establishment had higher expectations and/or were in search of an entirely different level of service and environment. This is more of a modern day "beauty salon" and not necessarily a "day spa" - - remember, you get what you pay for. If you want all the bells and whistles try spending a few extra hundred dollars on the service you want and dropping a nice chunk of change in gratuities and you'll probably get exactly what you're looking for - - an expansive front lobby, over-the-top friendly and phony front desk people and technicians, million-dollar decor, etc. Just my opinion.

My first visit for a facial, given as a gift. Be careful with this place the staff is extremely disorganized, stressed, miserable and not sure what the process was for giving a facial. There was no heat in the building and when asked to speak to the management no one seemed to know how to reach them. They take a Laissez-faire approach. Don't waste your money or time, there are much better places.

I went to Nickels on Oct. 13th for a 3.5 hr Spa day, Though the spa is getting tired looking, the spa services themselves were satisfactory. I had manicure, pedicure, facial and massage. As far as the massage goes, I had a 90 minute massage with Franco, the massage was 100% legitimate, albeit there was no music and the room was very cold. I have gone to Nickels in the past, this will probably be my last time. I was looking for a relaxing spa day and what I received was just Ok. For what they charge ok is not enough.

I have had many massages from Franco at Nickel Spa and at many other Spas. I have also recommended him to others, who have loved him! I don't know who these people are, but I can assure you, that Franco is Excellent! One of the best massage therapist's I have ever encountered. And also one of the nicest! Always has a smile and always makes me laugh! A great Masseur and a great guy!

I've been to Nickel, off and on, since they opened a few years ago, and it seems to have gone through some ups and downs in that time. My most recent visit was July 07, and I generally had a very good experience. Rachel, one of the manicure/pedicure techs, is just outstanding. She's friendly, warm, and does excellent work. I also had an excellent facial with JP, and a very good Swedish massage with James. (Despite some earlier posts, I've NEVER experienced anything inappropriate during a massage at Nickel.) This most recent visit was the first time I'd had a haircut at Nickel, and I have to say, she did a great job. I don't have that much hair these days, but this is the first time I can recall in years when anyone complimented me on a haircut. (Note: There were 2 stylists the day I was there. The one who did my cut was excellent, but, unfortunately, is planning to reduce her schedule to part-time in order to return to school. The other stylist seemed more than a little CRAZY, and I wouldn't be anxious to let her near me, for any reason.)

I agree with others who say the "waiting area" in the back is depressing and cramped. The love seats don't appear to be comfortable for more than one person at a time, so I've found myself perched on a barstool against the wall more than once. And that can be particularly tricky when you're in a bathrobe, waiting for a massage appointment! Men, also, are idiots, and when one or several of them decide to conduct business on a cell phone or compare notes about the state of parties at the Pines, it's impossible to escape the inane conversation because the space is so small. (So much for relaxation, unfortunately.) I rather enjoy the retail area--they have a lot of great merchandise--but I think the management would do well to think about a renovation that would shrink the size of the outer lobby in favor of more space in back, along with some better furniture choices and creating space conducive to quiet and de-stressing.

I have tried this "Spa" a few times for hair cuts... Each time the staff was incredibly rude. I would walk in, and be greeted, asked if I wanted water, and shown to the "backroom," which is supposed to be a waiting area... it SHOULD be in the front, but the lobby, I suppose, isn't large enough because of over 150 or so products for sale. This building used to be a large bank, so you can imagine how large the main room is. The staff weren't necessarily rude to ME, but they were to the other customers at the desk while I was checking in AND when I was leaving. I am a 20-something, attractive male (I guess), and EACH time I have been there, they have either ignored, or been exceptionally rude to the other men in the salon. An elderly man was ignored, and a man who wasn't in "Chelsea-boy" shape was treated with venomous attiude when he asked how much longer he would have to wait. The woman who cut my hair was pleasant, though I doubt she graduated at the top of her class.

On a different occasion, another stylist who cut my hair, was looking through the "hair-style"
books they had, to try and decide on a look... she started to complain that these "gay guys act too gay," and referenced the models in the books. I was shocked, as this salon clearly caters to the Chelsea crowd. She was a great stylist, but she shouldn't be working in a salon with a large gay clientele if she is uncomfortable with gay men.

The back-room area, where the manicures & pedicures are done is boring, dull, dark and depressing. It is dusty as well. The bathrooms are nice, but the hall-way to them is even darker, and the entire area is painted Gray... and I don't understand why. The only decent area is the section of the front room where the stylist stations/chairs are.

Their prices aren't too high for a "spa," but the "you are not pretty enough" attitude they give some customers is ridiculous... especially when I have yet to see a staff member who could actually BE a model.

I cannot say enough about how great their skin care products are. I am not one to go to spas or use skin care products, but i thought i would give them a try. I purchased the mugshot #3 and the morning after rescue gel. I use the 2 as needed and have seen great results. I stay up late, smoke, drink, etc. - yet you would think i visit a spa regularly. A little pricier than your Duane Reade, but well worth the money. I have never used any of there spa services there so i cannot comment on that. But if you are the type of guy who wants good skin but would never be caught dead getting a facial, i suggest you check this place out.

OMG if you want a massage like you'd find in the back of HX then this is the place for you. I was horrified by my last experience, made to feel TOTALLY ill a ease and ended up leaving early. First of all--I love a spa and I get massages quite often--I have NEVER had the masseur get up on top of me and straddle me, nor have I ever had them concentrate on massaging my bare butt cheeks (for a waaaay too long). Believe me I'm no prude but when I want a sports massage that's what want--nothin 'extra'. This isnt what I signed up for! The manager was pretty surly and gave me a 20% discount. Oh goody.

I thought I'd give Nickel a try. I was escorted to a back room. My appointment for a haircut was at 3:30. At 3:50 I decided I should check in with the front desk and soon discovered that they had completely forgotten about me. The woman barely gave me an excuse or apology, mumbling something I couldn't understand. The manager overheard my complaint, but completely ignored the situation. The atmosphere is too big to be comfortable, the workers inefficient, and the overall vibe with the bad music is downright cold. I'm going back to my botique salon in the East Village where I always feel appreciated. Nickel isn't worth a nickel.

The front desk staff forget that they work in the service industry. They're rude and don't even know when they're being so. This isn't really a Spa. It's a barber shop with a large space dedicate to sales of their beauty products. If you do have the misfortune of being escorted through the back doors, you will arrive at a dark, ratty, decayed space of worn furniture with an outdated magazine stand. Here you will wait while you get to observe others getting pedicures and observe men in robes because this is the ONLY spot in the Spa where you have to wait and relax between treatments. No windows, no privacy, no TV, nothing. It smells of Clorox. There is a difference between a reception area and an awaiting lounge. Nickel opted for a rompus room in the basement. The rooms are concrete prison cells where they keep the light low so you can't really see how awful it is. You can hear every word in the adjoining rooms and even in the lobby below. The treatments are based on an assembly line schedule and the customer will eat any lost time, meaning they end the treatments on time but do not start them so. You have to deal with the front desk again on the way out and they have no idea what customer service is. I think this place was probably sleek at one time but it is now a dump. They are capitalizing on a herd mentality of men in Chelsea. It's a spa for men! But, as a man, you would do much better at a spa that caters to both sexes where they understand exactly what you're paying for - relaxation and luxury. Nickel is an great idea but lacks execution. The staff who actually perform services are competent but are not given the environment to fully satiate their clients. I would never return to this place. And I'm not that picky.

Pros: In a beautiful old bank building

Cons: Used most of the space for selling product rather than pampering the customer

Everytime I have visited Nickel, I have never received attitude. I have yet to use all the salon has to offer, but the waxing staff have been egregiously professional and most friendly. For all those who carp, there are very few salons they cater to men of a particular persuausion. I would recommend it.

once again, to let it sink in... THEY HAD CLIPPERS!!!

The reviews were horrid for the spa section, so I decided I would spend the $100 gift certificate I was so graciously given from my friend on a hair cut and highlights. Now, one might use inferential reasoning and deduce that the salon probably wasn't an Antonio Prieto either- but Prieto's was booked and I was going home (and needed to look good!) so I bit the bullet.

Horrible (read: HORRIBLE) idea. She blamed the fact that my back section had two wings ready for lift off on my "cowlick" that suddenly emerged after 22 years! And, my blonde piecey highlights turned out to be a "gray haired glaze" atop the greater part of my head.

BAD. BAD IDEA! My friend said I went from the "cute boI" to the "cute boY from the twilight zone..." dooo do doooo doo... :(

I couldn't believe what a let down this place was.  The staff was extra rude, the reading room they mention o n their site is nothing more then some ratty couches and out of date issues of People.  I went with a buddy for a facial and we both have very different skin types yet both facialists suggested the same product.  Has to be the worst spa experience i have ever had.

I've been going to this place ever since it opened, for body waxing (including Brazilian!), and facials. The waxing can be painful and even dangerous, but the technicians have always been skillful, and my body is hair-free.

The facials have not always been so good, but I went today for a facial, after not having one for a couple of years, and it was sublime. A facialist named Max (who also works with plastic surgeons for post-operative skin care) set the mood with wonderful spacy music, got me relaxed, and did a skillful job. My face has never felt so good. It's smooth and moist and clean. Max has the softest fingers I've ever felt on any man, and he has a great relaxed yet caring way about him. Ask for Max.

I agree with some of the other comments I've read: you expect the spa to be spacious, but in fact it's quite cramped. Lots of space is wasted in the lobby and sales area, while the treatment rooms are like little cells. The front desk staff is awful: they could not be more officious and off-putting. No laughter, no smiles, no welcome, just business, and make sure you pronouce the spa's name as "Nick-ELL" rather than Nickel, or else you'll be severly reprimanded. I know the company is French, but the owners of the spa seem to have taken New Yorkers and turned them into snooty Parisians. I'm surprised they don't require you to speak French. Sacre dieu!

what a dump. the foyer is large, airy and clean. but the minute you get behind the scenes it'scramped, tatty, peeling at the edges, with worn furniture, and it feels DIRTY!
the facial i received wasn't bad but the place is horrible. i would never go back. don't go here!

Disappointing. Had a gift certificate for a 90-minute sports massage. Massage therapist told me that they'd only paid for Swedish massage (not true). He ended massage after 75 minutes. When I called him on it, he said all massages ended 5 minutes before the hour. Then he tried to imply I was late (in fact I was early for the appointment). He was late. Would never visit Nickel again.

I brought my fiance here for a massage. He had a great experience and said the masseuse was excellent; he would go back to her. I was very pleased about that! It seemed like a neat place for guys.

But...I did not find the front desk staff to be overly friendly. The man who took my reservation on the phone was almost rude. In person, they could have been a bit more pleasant.

After I had already paid for the service, I overheard one staff member tell a customer that first time customers get 20% off their service - that was not explained to me when I paid or made the reservation! I got a refund, but I was annoyed I had to ask. Id also like to see a nice seating area for women who are waiting for their men (women are not allowed into the beauty area).

Uneven, patchy, rushed ou the door. She was putting gel in my hair before I had a chance to say can you get a little more off the side.

I recently tried the Nickel Spa for men. I was very disappointed by the general feel 'the spa' gave and also by the customer service that was poor.
My manicure took 9 minutes then I had to wait 45 minutes for my massage therapist for a massage that was shorter than scheduled.
When I complained to the front desk, I was told that I should have woken up earlier...can you imagine being treated like that when going to a Spa ?
no thanks

Greeter service at the front was pleasant, as I was immediately offered water upon entering. Was surprised at the rather small waiting space on the first floor, given the spaciousness of the foyer/sales area. The floor looked as if they could be redone or painted. The mani/pedi area could be a little larger as well. Had to lean fowards from time to time for the specialist to work. Wasn't too pleased with the specialist herself, given she kept looking at her watch. And saw that my right hand was correctly done, while my left hand wasn't. I think I've gotten better service at the Korean nail places than here. Still, I do want to go back and see how their massages and facials are. But perhaps not for manicures and pedicures.

I went for a facial & manicure and was very pleased. The person that performed my facial was excellent! She told me everything that she was doing and what products she used. The manicurist was ok, nothing to write home about. I think it would be better to go to a small store somewhere. As for the setting, it feels like you are in a basement. The floors aren't that great and to get to the seat at the manicurist, you have to duck under a spiral stair case! And the seat is too far from the table. I didn't feel like I was in a spa, but I did like the service.

I went for a manicure and pedicure. While the experience was not unpleasant, I thought the area where the work was done could be cleaner. The floors looked dirty and the corners were filled with dust. The stations were littered with torn magazines that were about six months old. While the service was fine, I felt the manicure was cursory. The greeter at the front desk acted like he was in a high school cafeteria, not an upscale spa, which I think reflects badly on the management. I don't think I'd go back to try other services, beacuse I wasn't that impressed.

I found a talented, no-attitude masseur at Nickel to whom I've returned for several visits. Their timing is less than punctual, but the great treatments are certainly worth the wait. The modern retail space on the ground floor makes for a pleasant place to browse while you wait.

I come to know about Nickel from Paris. the nickel spa in Paris in the trendy area of "le Marais" is very upscale. I go to the one in NYC often for my haircut, and massages and Mani/padi and such. it is decent but not as great as the one

I would rather have a great massage at Nickel Spa rather than an average massage at any of the other places in the city that are all "prettied up" and over priced. The prices for the massage was very reasonable and well worth my coin.
