Great Gym, just make sure you sign all paperwork needed to get all of the training sessions you were promised with your membership, especially if you are signing up by phone.

Equinox 54th st 2nd ave. I have been a member of equinox for over 10 years. Paid the premium over other city gyms for the cleanliness & never too overcrowded & spa like atmosphere. Clearly this is changing for the worse. More like a club with overly loud music, unkept locker rooms etc. When I mentioned the music issue to the club mgr I got the corporate line that the volume was set by "corporate". Wake up guys! Listen to your customers or we will go to another gym.

I completely agree with the other commenters who say that the trainers act like they own the place. I realize this is their workplace so it makes sense that they feel comfortable. However, they need to realize that the gym is primarily about people who work out on their own. The trainers take up tons of the LIMITED stretching area, put their towels, clipboards, etc. all over the place, yell to each other, bounce balls near your head as you're trying to stretch, and generally fill the space. I hate to say it, but trying to maneuver around trainees, but more, their trainers, is the worst part of going to Equinox. And this is a universal problem with Equinox - it's not just the smaller gyms.

Trainers, people know you are there. You do not need to spread out your towel here, your clipboard there in order to get business. I am not going to hire you just so that I can have space on the mat.

While I am reviewing, I will ask - why such limited stretching area in every single Equinox? Especially since trainers train (and sit while they train) on the mat, the gym should allot more space for stretching and maybe have tighter space elsewhere.

This is specifically about the Manager in Mamaroneck, Chris Casino. I was a charter member and like many others could no longer afford the club after I lost my business to the current economic times. The guy emails me for months about returning to the club and I always respond that I can no longer afford the fee, I also mention that I am a Viet Nam Verteran, have type-2 Diabetes and am the ripe old age of 62. I may well have written in Latin, as he has never had the back bone to respond to my requests for a break in price for health reasons etc. Yesterday or the day before I received an email from him saying it was the last day to join for $19.00. I wrote back again about my situation and asked if I coudl join for October, November & December
for the 19.00 + $50.00 per month for the 3 months, as my health has become an issue. I also requested he provide me with the coroporate contact and email of a person who might at least respond to me. Well, as usual this rude, unprofessional, excuse of the manager there, once again has failed to live up to the WE ARE THE BEST CLUB, Shame on Chris Casino, He cannot be the face of the company they are looking for.

I really enjoy going to this location. Members are usually banking professionals, tribeca locals so everyone is focused on working out and not on others. I rejoined late 2008 after 7 yrs away and my intiation was waived, in fact the rep reminded me that I was formerly a member. 2009 was quiet and during lunch I was able to step away and into a pretty empty gym, classes wtih plenty of room. 2010 is a whole different story. People must have caught on and now I can not get to a class 5 minutes before without getting stepped on, glared at and stuck in a corner by the equipment. The club needs to increase the # of evening classes and include a 5:30 option. 6:30 - 7:30 classes are always crowded. On one Sunday the only good cardio morning class, I was following the instructor and two girls beside me nearly got into a cat fight over space. It was awkward. I stopped going on Sundays. I avoid certain evenings and try to go during lunch but that is not always possible. The club needs to re-assess the class situation. The club is pricey, with locker and laundry it is unbearable to think that I can not attend classes daily due to over-crowding!! I pay too much to skip a day plus working out is such an outlet. To be stressed at the gym maks no sense.

Each club is different and I appreciate the variety. The murray street location used to be a "secret" but now its leaked and my gym experience is getting ruined.

Regardless though, I would not switch to NYSC. Just need the gym's management to take note and make improvements.

Pros: Clean locker rooms, steam room, plenty of towels, Kiehl prod

Cons: This location is getting too crowded

Equinox??s group fitness manager Sarra Morton can??t take any criticism of her own teaching. Instead of improving her methods of instruction, she has members kicked out of Equinox if they make a complaint. Sarra Morton and many other instructors invent moves that cause weak alignments that can permanently injure students in the long run. If you do get injured in her class and complain out it, she will have you permanently removed from the club without refund. I do not suggest Equinox at this point with their current management team.

I moved to Equinox after several years at NYSC. I just couldnt deal with the small lockers, towel nazis, dirty (and moldy) locker rooms and muscle heads, anymore. Regardless of the location I selected, these conditions seemed to prevail. The last straw came when my locker was broker into at an UWS location. There was a flaw that allowed the door to be jerked open. This was likely the work of an employee there. They staff and manager were ambivalent to say the least and even weeks later, the locker was not repaired, so certainly others were robbed as well.

Yes, Equinox is expensive, but I have always found it to be clean, with ample equipment and a nice atmosphere. They offer plenty of classes and overcrowding is not an issue.

Its seems another reviewer here is/was probably an trainer with Equinox. I'd have to say that one of the few issues I have with Equinox is their training staff. Several of them seem to think they own the place and that members revolve around them. Often they use the large lockers, (which are important to members wearing suits) and on the floor, they think nothing of using excessive space or several machines at once.

Personally, if I dont enjoy a gym, I wont go. I am fortunate to have a corporate discount that makes Equinox more affordable. Money aside, I would certainly recommend the gym as one of the best I have ever used.

One of the most overrated clubs in the entire NYC region. Extremely expensive for its members and an an extremely bad employer who treats it instructors like second class citizens. When notified of a crab lice outbreak in one of the clubs' locker rooms, Equinox took retaliatory action against the instructor, instead of taking care of the problem. Sexual harassment is common place at this elitist club who believes it can pull anything on its employees because it wrongly believes it is the creme de la creme of clubs. In fact one supervisor of instructors was finally fired for sexual harassment only after a SEVENTH complaint. You would think that one of the highest membership fees in the industry would get you the best fitness instructors at Equinox. Hardly! The club employs 5 minute "auditions" for potential instructors and based on this methods they hire employees. An instructor recently returned from a 2+ year stint in Iraq when his National Guard unit was called up and the club refused to provide him with an audition opportunity. So, if you want to get your money sucked out of your wallet faster than you can blink and not get the best instructors the region has to offer, Equinox is the club for you!

Pros: Other clubs are near by when it is time to switch memberships

PROS: Others clubs are a short walk when it is time to switch memberships
CONS: Rude front desk people, expensive, very snooty club

I've never been the biggest fan of equinox. They are expensive and overrated, but even I have to admit this location is great. There are lots of famous and beautiful people who workout here. It makes the experience very enjoyable
