Brooklyn Union Maintenance Under Investigation

May 19, 2011
The notorious Brooklyn Union Maintenance, a group of alleged scam artists known for gaining access to homes in the area by claiming they need to make unsolicited repairs, may be getting some surprising visitors of their own soon.

According to Lois Booker-Williams, assistant state attorney general, her office is investigating reports of fraudulent activity by the group, which has traditionally targeted elderly residents. She said that they have subpoenaed one individual, but could not reveal their identity since it??s an ongoing case.

She said that there are signs to watch out for, such as requests for cash, and that she is interested in hearing from everyone who has had contact with the Brooklyn Union.

The con involves fake utility workers operating under the name Brooklyn Union Maintenance??a reference to the legitimate and now defunct Brooklyn Union Gas Company. Over the past two years there have been several reports of the mock-utility workers visiting homes for unannounced and unnecessary repairs.

Once they enter a home, the workers either damage equipment or perform mock inspections. They often ask for cash or higher payments up front for quick service??and then they disappear.

They have also been known to claim they work for National Grid, and perhaps, in the latest change, the New Jersey based Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G), said Booker-Williams.

Booker-Williams said that anyone who feels they may be a target of a scam should report it to the Attorney General. Forms, and information on contractor scams, can be found at nyknowyourcontractor.com.

They think they're slick. They called my parents and convinced them that they were calling from a city agency and made an appointment. I just happened to be speaking to my mom on the day of the scheduled appointment. It sounded suspicious to me. I took the number and called. A woman answered the phone. I explained that I was calling on behalf of my parents who had a scheduled appointment and that I wanted to get some more information before they arrived. I asked what the name of the company was. She said she would have to have a salesperson call me back. I was like, "You can't tell me the name of the company?". She said she was the answering service. Yeah ok! I asked again. "Are you with a city agency or are you a private company looking for business? She said they were Brooklyn Union. I said, "Brooklyn Union what? Gas?". (I know it doesn't exist anymore but I wanted to see what she said)"She said, "Yes". She said they don't provide the gas but they provide the service and that a sales rep would call me back. I emphasized that someone better call me back because someone from their company was supposed to be at my parents house in 15 minutes and I told her that if I did not get a call back I would NOT let anyone in their home. She asked me what my parents last name was and said someone would call me back. I told her again, "You better have someone call me back. Maybe they didn't understand when you called to confuse them but I do understand". Needless to say, NO ONE EVER CALLED BACK and when I called the same number back a bit later it just rang and rang and rang. THESE PEOPLE ARE SCAM ARTISTS! They prey on the elderly and, in my parents case, people who have a slight accent. Well, guess what, these people happened to have a daughter that was one step ahead of you! I wish everyone had someone to look out for them. SHAME ON YOU! Wonder how much you had to pay the people who posted positive comments above? I had not choice but to select at least one star for a rating but they should have a "0" as a selection. What a disgrace!

Brooklyn Union Maintenance

760 Belmont Ave
West Babylon, NY 11704

How many addresses does this company have. Hmmm after the first two you think this is a SCAM. ALL addresses come back to trees and empty lots. I think that every one of these workers have criminal records. I know the the lady that I am assuming is the owner has to have an extensive record or must be on parole for something she seemed very very dark and secretive and gave off a criminal vibe when talking with her. Just because they have a 1-888 number does not mean that they are a ligitament company. Senior citizens becareful they pray on these people and scare them into believing that their oil furnace needs work when it does not.

I strongly recommend contacting brooklyn union for your chimney needs. I phoned a couple other contractors and I got a lot of no-shows and very high bids until I contacted BKU.

I would definitely give them a call

They inspected my chimney when I bought my house and i was shocked at how bad the conditions were. I did my research and shopped around with other companys but brooklyn union maintenances quote was the lowest. I called them up in the morning and came very quickly to my house and did a very professional job.

They inspected my chimney when I bought my house and i was shocked at how bad the conditions were. I did my research and shopped around with other companys but brooklyn union maintenances quote was the lowest. I called them up in the morning and came very quickly to my house and did a very professional job.

BROOKLYN UNION MAINTENANCE UNDER INVESTIGATIONMAY 19, 2011

I agree with the first post. They called eventhough I am on the do not call list and tried to scam me because they said I filed papers regarding a new gas boiler. I have oil. They said that the state required they come and inspect my draft, but don't worry its a free service. When pressed for answers they hung up. I tried to call back the number they gave and it was a call center where the snotty condecending girl on the other end wouldn't give out any information about the company but wanted to know all of my info so she could have a rep contact me. Reall, did she think that I was that dumb. This company is known for this scam and has been reported but they still get away with it by changing thier numbers and info. Beware of these scammers/liars. The guy who thinks they are great must be one of the scammers, don't believe that they are good.

Customers be alert Brooklyn Union Maintenance is extremely deceptive and their employees are con artists. They will come into your home and over exaggerate that your furnace has holes and has fire safety code and they cannot pass your fire safety code with National Grid and they will have to shut down your gas so therefore they have to do emergency work otherwise your gas will be shut down. They also tell you Fire Marshall's send them to your home every 6 years to inspect. Absolutely a lie,THEY ARE LIARS.. Fire Marshall's only send out inspection for Commercial buildings. They will tell you IT'S AN EMERGENCY YOU HAVE TO DO THE JOB NOW. They tell you their price is $1500.00 and two days later everything falls apart. They are very DECEPTIVE AND LIARS turn them away if they call you or come to your doors. They are not trustworthy, they do a shoddy job and keep promising to come back to do repairs and never show up. They also claim they do LIFETIME WARANTEE( that's how he spelt it). I am reporting them.
