Worst place ever and they have had a hold on my CC for 2 weeks now, resturants always run your card for 20% more than the check, and the submit the actual amount after you sign and leave a tip, they did this. ALL legit resurants then release the 1st auth, the run, not Focolare, it's been 2 weeks and they still have the hold on my card... anyone for a class action suit

So my family and i went to little italy one night for good food. We saw this kinda "wanting to be classy' place and decided to stop in because it had a fireplace inside and live entertainment. So we came to this place the waitress wasnt italian let alone spoke like borat...so we ordered a round of drinks and as we were ordering the manager or boss came over and pushed a passion fruit martini on us..then we were up to ordering the appitizers...well can i tell you the live entertainment was not only live it was blowing in my ear it was so loud..so we were sitting next to the fireplace thank god it was not on because it was so hot in there and when we asked for air conditioning they said it was broken. So we finnaly ordered our meal and waited forever for it. And as we were ready to eat.. a family of roach*s decided to join us at the nest table. we were were fed up at this point. and decided that our borat waitress should pay our check.. i would not reccomend this place to my worst enemy... 311 for you Focolare

i had to rate this before i could publish it but i must say that it doesnot deserve a circle let alone a freakin star

We were lured into this restaurant on the promise that there was live music and homemade food so we thought the atmosphere would be what we were looking for. We were seated at a great table in front of a fireplace set in a stone wall. It was beautiful aside from the fact that the table was right in front of the dirty window to the kitchen. There was live music however we were not expecting opera style accompanied with a guitar.
The food ended up being incredibly bland and lukewarm. I do not recommend the eggplant parm. It was more like eggplant rollatini and was covered in slices of cheese that weren't fully melted. My husband got the fettucini alfredo which was considerably better than my food. We also got brushcetta as an appetizer-- again BLAND. We were so disappointed that we skipped dessert, and for me (as the ultimate dessert lover) that was saying a lot.
The service was terrible. We only saw our waiter when he took our order but could not track him down after that. Other members of the staff tended to our needs. We were confused as to how they could behave like this but realized when the check came that a 20% gratuity was already built in.
On our way back, we saw a pizzeria that had a slice of pizza with beer or a glass of wine for $6- we would recommend that deal over the one we got at focolare.

I went to Focolare the other night with my paesani, and we just had the greatest time. The food was delicious, especially the gnocchi, which I had. My friends ordered chicken parm and said it was really good. The drinks were a bit pricy, but they were very strong and got the job done. And the bartender was an awesome guy. Overall, I had a great experience because the staff was so friendly, the manager will do anything for you, he even sings opera for you, and the food and drinks were excellent. Its a very cozy, romantic environment. The best part is, they played great music and had Goodfellas on the TV screen. And behind the bar there's a big picture of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. It really made me feel like a bigshot again. Thank you Focolare!

Last Night my boyfriend and i were walking around little itally, and we came upon this place called Focolare. It was so wonderful, and serene inside. In fact it was a little chilly outside so they put the Fire Place on. Ohh it was so romantic, the employees were so helpful, as to explain what each dish was in depth. We had the fried calamari for an appitzer, which was so delicious. I swear it mealted in your mouth, so evenly seasoned. yummy. Then we orderd dinner, I had the chicken Marsala which was excellent, and my boyfriend had the Veal Scalopini. The food was so good that we insited on talking to the chefs in the kitchen. The mangers Dan and James were so nice, the treated us like we were family. That is exactly what we wanted especially on our anniversary. I would reccomend this place to everyone i know. I read some of the other reviews and i did not see anything wrong with the restaurant. for the quality of service and food, it was well worth it. i give it 200 stars. GOOD JOB GUYS

We returned to Little Italy for the Feast of San Genaro, and like last year, we went to Focolare. This year the experience was horrible. Because we remembered how great it was last fall, we didn't check the reviews on this site. WE SHOULD HAVE!! Then we would have known that Franco Lania had left. This summer's comments all give indications that there had been a major and a catastrophic change in the kitchen and if we had read them, we would have stayed away. Our food was tasteless and most of our entrees were cold. The wait staff was anything but attentive. And for a final insult, we paid big bucks! A trip into NYC should be special and this dining experience was anything but. The restaurant looks the same, but what a difference when a talented chef is no longer there.

Short but sweet: Food was cold, boring, and most of all OVER PRICED! They must assume we are all tourists and want to take us FOR A RIDE!! Staff seemed like a bunch of goons- manager especially. He was more intent on shaking hands with his "friends from the neighborhood" than paying attention to his customers. Waited for my friend's entree for more than 20 minutes after mine had already been served, and when we complained I thought we might have to watch our backs on the way out. Dont know how those other positive reviews could have made it on here. Maybe that's what the manager's doing instead of his job? Shady stuff going on here! Any of the other restaurants on the block is probably better than this one.

On a spur of the moment trip me and my wife recently went to visit Little Italy for the first time in many years, to our suprise we found that many of our favorite resturaunts have closed down. So in the true spirit of the night we decided to take a chance on some where new, We tried this new place FOCOLARE and fell in love, the service was outstanding and I would highly reccomend it to anyone looking for some good Italian food. We were greeted at the door by a very cheerful hostess and seated next to an amazing fireplace. Unfortunatley since it was the summer it was not able to be lit, but still it added a little romance to our night. After a few moments of trying to decide over what to eat, I ordered the fresh ricotta gnocchi and my wife ordered the house favorite, lamb. Well I must say it was one of the best meals I have had in quite some time! The wait staff was catering to our every need and was no more then a step away the entire night. After this great meal we decided to go to the bar and have a few cocktails. The bartender insisted we try the new "Mulberry Street" martini, just like everything else, it was amazing. Our bartender Antonio was a pleasure to have as he made the expierence that much better, letting us know of the history of little italy as he has worked their for years. Anyone looking for a great meal and a good time, check out this place!!

I have never in my life written a review of a restaurant before. I am writing one tonight because I have to say this was one of the worst experiences I have ever had at a restaurant in NYC. First off they did not have the bottle of wine we requested because they were "redoing the wine list". That was OK because the maitre d' recommended a fantastic bottle of red wine. We had already ordered and received our appetizer ( a pizza which was good) when the waitress returned to the table and told us that two of the four entrees we ordered were not available. Mind you this is 6pm in LITTLE ITALY and the waitress was telling us they did not have SAUASAGE and VEAL!!!! Is this a joke or what???!!!! AWFUL!!! AND the women's bathroom had no electricity!!!! We paid the bill for the wine and pizza and went to a real restaurant (IL CORTILE, which was delicious).

The ambience, service, and food were all perfect. Definatly different than any other restaurant in little italy.
Me and my wife were lurred in by the ambience and music of focolare. the service was perfect, the waiter was extremely knowledeable of the food and the food was UNBELIEVABLE. The grilled pizza was probably the best pizza ive ever had, and the lamb dish which was recomended by the waiter was amazing. I am definatly going back. as soon on my next trip to little italy.

I got to say that Focolare is one of the best Restaurants in nyc. I took my family out to dinner and they were amazed by the mouthwatering taste of the food. the wine list is great, the appetizers to the desserts were fantastic. I cant complain about anything we had such a great time. The people are very friendly, from the busboy to the servers. There is alot of competition in Little Italy but at the end of the day Focolare is the place to come.

I heard about Focolare a few weeks ago from a friend at work who was raving! My husband and I love to try new places, so Thursday night we tried it and were very impressed. The place is beautiful and so cozy (perfect for a romantic dinner). We had the scallops which were amazing as an appetizer and then the rabbit cannelloni and homemade gnocchi (the best i've ever had). The prices were very resonable and the wine list was great! We will be back and I recommend it highly!

Last December I wrote a review because I had found a treasure in Little Italy - Focolare. Today, Sept 5, 2008, I must make it known that all has changed. It is so evident that Chef Lania is no longer at Focolare! During several visits in early spring, everything I ordered was just as delicious, but yesterday I thought I was in a different restaurant. I should have known that there had been a change of chef - the food was cold and quite tasteless. Even though the restaurant did not have its usual crowd, I went in because Lania's name was still on the menu out front. I finally was able to get an answer -Chef Lania has not been there since May. I wish I knew where Lania is now because I would follow him.

Visit in December and Fall of 2007 to Focolare gave us a totally great very unique dinning experience.
A return during July and August of 2008 gave us a totally disappointing experience. I guess I have to agree with the othere bloggers. Thje summer experience was YUK. Rumor has it that the chef, Frank Lania, has not been at the reataurant since June 2008. I guess they haven't been able to replace him.

I am so glad that I found this new restaurant that opened up on Mulberry Street in Little Italy. The ambience is very warm and inviting yet trendy. The menu was a real surprise. It was much different than any of the other Italian restaurants in that immediate area. Not only do they have your typical Italian dishes but they have also incorporated some more Rustic Italian dishes as well. For apetiziers the grilled octopus is a must try and so is the grilled scallops. For an entre the Veal Ossobuco was out of this world! It is definitely a high end quality Italian Bistro! I have now been there several times and have been happy each time. Looks like I have become a regular!
