My spouse and I have been eating at this small but comfortable and well-run restaurant for more than two years now. Splendid new wines -- at amazingly affordable prices -- keep on appearing. The not huge yet consistently interesting menu changes seasonally. All year, they serve very high-quality market product, perfectly prepared. Try the endive salad, the smoked salmon, the mussels, the sole, or the generous, wide-ranging cheese plate, which I think is finer and more original than those at restaurants costing twice as much. (A little bonus: nice picks for background music, ranging from Charles Aznavour to French Country Western -- yes, there is such a thing.) They have started taking credit cards and are now serving Sunday brunch. I love this place.

/ I see that someone has rude things to say about the co-owner. But he's actually very nice -- eager to share his enthusiasm for fine wines, his joy in the sensuous experience of great cooking, and his huge stock of entertaining anecdotes. He's a lot of fun to be around. It's sad to see how nasty things get online when the reality is so different and so wonderful.

/ After dining here dozens of times, I'm still surprised at how the wine list continues to grow and evolve, and how already-good dishes become even better over time. Holidays are a real treat, with excellent New Year's Eve and Valentine's Day special menu offerings (and the super Berlioz arrangement of "La Marseillaise" played on Bastille Day).

Good food with bad attitude;
I've passed by this place so many times and wondered why I've never gone in. It looks great and cozy and like a good neighborhood bistro, so my girlfriend and I went in last night.
The trouble began almost right away. I noticed the music was loud, but thought it was just that song. It was bothering my girlfriend quite a bit. (who had a bit of headache and just wanted a nice quiet romantic place to chill), and asked the french dude who, as it turns out is a partner, to turn the volume down a notch.
He replied that this is how his place and he was sorry if we didn't like it. His choice in music was terrible - going from Bon Jovi to harsh hip hop. Totally did not work for the space and as club music was lame. just awful.
We nearly left, but decided to put up with it. I had the steak frites and my girlfriend had the salmon. Both dishes were very very good. Really. I loved the food, but when it came time for dessert, we passed - by that time we both had had enough of the music and asked for the check and left.
For a Friday night ,even though it was a small place they only had three tables. if they can figure out a more appropriate music selection and tolerable music volume that would probably get more people to stay.(BTW -I'm a fan of hard core rock, so if I'm saying the volume was a problem you can bet it was pretty loud)

We entered an empty Canaille that advertised an extended restaurant week menu on their answering machine AND on their window. The waiter/ owner didn't mention it, he also barely looked at us, so we ordered from the menu. We were served enormous amounts of rubbery steak and bland chicken. The next couple to come in asked about restaurant week and the owner explained (in guilt trip form) that he simply partakes in restaurant week for advertising purposes, loses a lot of money by participating and therefore did not have a printed menu so that he could change it need be. The couple ordered the special that was suddenly a restaurant week item- but requested to have the fish cooked sans wine, the owner's reply was an obnoxious, "What else am I supposed to cook it in?!" The customer then screamed that he was an alcoholic and insisted on removing the wine. Though the owner finally complied, I had never witnessed such disrespect from the owner of an establishment. This place REALLY does not deserve the good reviews published here and has motivated me to write this bad one.

My husband and I went for dinner here one rainy evening and it was just perfect. The ambience was warm, inviting and romantic, the service was thoughtful and unobtrusive and the food was fabulous. The menu is small, but the ingredients are fresh and interesting. I highly recommend Canaille for date night... leave the kids at home. I don't think they'd be upset to have children, I just think this place is special enough to hire a babysitter.

The food is amazing. The portions are big. The service is friendly, and makes you feel at home. I believe the two owners also serve the food. The gentleman, is french. The space is cozy and relaxing. I love, love, love this place. My biggest concern is it is on the verge of getting popular which means it will be harder for me and my girlfriend to get in!

We have been to Canaille 4 times over the past 6 months and every time we have had a very pleasant and delicious meal. The menu has a few solid staples, like the Canaille salad, the mussels and the steak frites. Specials vary by season and accessibility to fresh products, but the cold soups in the summer have been outstanding! Space is definitely tight but the tradeoff is significant - direct interaction with the owner. Every night we went he was serving most tables and joyfully willing to discuss the menu and his eclectic wine list. Canaille is a slice of unassuming and delicious French life... thankfully in the heart of Park Slope now.

I am always in search of cozy, charming restaurant that provide excellent service with amazing food and La Canaille does not disappoint! From the moment we walked in, we were greeted by the very charismatic host, Philippe. His enthusiasm made us feel like longtime friends. Immediately after being seated we were offered an amuse-bouche to tempt our palates and it did not disappoint. After being told the seasonal specials, we let the house order our food for us because everything sounded amazing and believe me, it was! We enjoyed grilled calamari that was so tender it almost melted in our mouths. We also savored every spoonful of a chilled zucchini basil soup that was perfect for a hot & humid night! In additional, we asked Philippe to choose a wine for us and and he picked the best rose that we have every tasted. In addition to the exceptional food, the ambiance is so authentic that one might think that are actually in Paris! I will be back every time I am in Brooklyn and look forward experiencing more of it's culinary and wine delights!

Our experience started when we were sat at a tiny table in the virtually empty restaurant. When asked for another table, the server was visibly perturbed and very passive-aggressive in saying so. A simple no would have been fine, however his behavior made our meal very uncomfortable and hostile. We were presented with an amuse-bouche of Clams, the same plate on which he poured the Olive Oil to dip our bread in. (He presented the other tables with clean plates for their Olive Oil- it was deliberate on his part) I knew then and there that we would have a terrible time with this waiter. He was very rude and slammed plates and glasses down on the table. He finally softened up at the end of the meal, but by then we had already decided we would never go back.
The food was sub-par at best. The French Onion Soup was the only part of our meal to write home about. My moules were bland and the frites much too salty. My boyfriend's steak frites were average, however the portion much too small and the steak too tough for being rare temperature. After deliberation, we decided to order dessert. We were presented with Chocolate Pots de Creme, which had clearly been refrigerated several days, as the withered strawberry gave away. All in all, we had a terribly awkward experience which the food didn't even make up for. I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone, when there are much better French restaurants in the area.

Do not miss dessert, especially the chocolate potde creme. It is a tiny piece of heaven in a bowl. And of course, it needs to be said that Canaille makes a perfect pomme frite -- salty, crispy, and with just the perfect hint of parsely sprinkled on top.

Excellent wine list, small bar (Martinis and Manhattans would not be a problem, anything more trendy would be). This is a perfect little jewel box of delicious culinary treats, right at home in Park Slope.
