OMG these horrible comments are KILLING ME!!!! This is the best barn ever!! That staff and horses there are extremely nice. I have been riding for three years at 4 different barns and had 10 different trainers. This barn is by far the best and I am NEVER leaving. All you people that hate jamaica bay dont belong here!! Im serious!! Anthony(the owner) cares about these horses so much and that every kid that has a lesson is safe. He is so involved. All you jamaica bay haters should never come back because you dont belong here!

I agree with the previous post to an extent. I too used to work at JBRA. The employees do all they can for these horses a d truly put their best interests first! The owners on the other hand are cold hearted, money hungry criminals! The ASPCA has visited numerous times with few minor violations noted. Why is that? Because the owner leads them to believe that horses in straight stalls are privately owned. These horses aren't even given more than a few sprinkles of used saw dust at nigh for bedding. Some of thm lay down and get stuck because the stall is so small.

I used to work at JBRA and I can tell you, its not the best stable but its not the worst one either.

Yea some of the horses are underweight but thats because they are old and have a hard time keeping it on. Believe me none of those horses are underfed or STARVED as some people have accused.

The ONLY reason there are any accidents at ALL are because of IDIOT customers who dont listen for sh*t and think they know what they are doing. Usually when something happened on a trail I took out it was a guy showing off to his girl or buddies. If you know how to ride maybe you should take a private or club ride (where you get a horse for an hour and go by yourself) If you know how to ride and dont want instruction dont waste our damn time!

My pet peeve was trail riders who never listened, I may be a girl but that doesnt mean I dont know anything. Like I said before the only reason anything bad happened was because the trail riders would do whatever they wanted. Ive had trail riders take off and then wonder why they fell off.....

Some things to know before getting on a horse:
They can tell if youre SCARED so be confident and 'in charge' when you mount.

They are HERD animals meaning: If one horse runs, they all run.

They are also PREY animals meaning: They get spooked EASILY so you must be calm at all times, you are the LEADER if you freak out the horse will freak out.

Horses are also GRAZING animals....
I cant believe how many people asked me if we were starving the horses or asked why the horses were hungry. They ARENT hungry thats just what they do, standing in a stall and having their food given to them at certain times is not normal for a wild horse. So when out on a trail surrounded by delicious green vegitation its only natural that they should want to eat it. -_-;;;

Anyway, Im done ranting about idiot customers. If you know how to ride and want a nice relaxing place to ride, or you dont know how to ride and want to learn how then please go check out JBRA. If its your first time on a horse: TAKE A DA*N LESSON FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A lesson is in a controlled area with well trained and behaved horses who do that all day.

If you have never been on a horse the worst thing you can do is take a freakin trail ride. There are so many un controllable elements involved in a trail ride. And if you DO take a trail ride DEFINITELY wear a freakin helmet!!!!

Ok Im done now, I hope you idiots who dont know horses have learned something from this.

This is right by my house, so I took my cousins that came for vacation to JBRA.... I wish I didn't. They are such a rip off. And they told me since your cousins are a first timers they should get the private tour, which cost more.... and on top of all that they told us you will have 5 instructors with you since we were a big group, and only gave us 3 which 2 of them were prob 15. We got on the horses and they looked so hungry. One of the horses ran off and they did nothing to stop it and my cousin FLEW off the horse which left her with a fractured spine, and not one of those so called instructors got off their horse to help her. She was so scared the horse would step on her so she got up so quickly and all the instructor said to her was get back on it. She refused and than 2 other horses went crazy...tumbling.
No one came to us and asked if she was ok. and there is no doctor on premises as well. All they said was "WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE". The least they can do is refund our money since we were only on it no more than 5 min.
They are they most selfish people I've ever met, I own a business and that's not how you treat customers. Customers come first no matter one!!!!
Do yourself a favor and don't bother visiting this place, I've been on horses many times before but never on something like that. They starve them!!!!!

Even one star is too good for what they are!

I honestly cannot believe how awful and untrue some of these comments are, from the owners and employees to the way the horses are treated. I've been taking lessons here twice a week for about a month and I have never had anyone be rude

I came here after my barn closed in November of 2010. I LOVE IT HERE!! After my first lesson here, I became friends with the owner and alot of the trainers. In all my three years of riding, I never meet such a great barn. I dont know why

Jamiaca Bay Riding Academy is not a incorporation, its a family. I have been riding there since i was 6. I have come a long way.... And JBRA has helped me through it. Now i am on the MET team and it's practically my second home. Most

The horses at Jamaica Bay Riding Academy Inc Stables seem unhappy, and it seems to me that they are kept for the primary use of trail rides in the summer which I am guessing is the main source of income for the barn. If you are looking

It is enough to esteem responses and all becomes clear that here still what?
The response of the young guy which has listed all lacks and in there and then their children's words denies? It is ridiculous.
Nasty to the pure will not stick

I always wanted to learn how to ride the horse so I started taking classes there. It was my first class today and I can't describe what a great experience it was! If only i had more time to go there...

To begin with I was already nervous about getting on a horse, but It is something I have always wanted to try! I also do love horses. From the moment I was there I was very unhappy with the lack of attention and profectionalism! I had a hard time getting my helmet to lock, and it seemed that no one really cared. They just wanted me to hurry up and get my ass on the horse so they can start the 4pm trail.
The male guide was like, " you don't really need the helmet" I told him " Ok well I am not trying to fall and crack open my head!"
Finally a male staff member with black hair, comes out of no where and helps me out, he was the only nice guy there!
I have NEVER been horse back riding before and they dont even teach you how to handle the horse. I was first only taught how to hold the ropes. I was nervous and the staff acted like my being nervous was only annoying them all! I was the only first time rider in the small group, and they could care less that I never rode before, they just expected me to know what I was doing, during the 5 min(if that) instruction time and shame on me if I did not know!
At first the ride was okay. For a few minutes I felt comfortable. The walk to the beach was nice. I was there with my fiance and was really trying to have a good time.
By the time we turned around to head back from the trial all the hores started to act up a bit. My horse I thought was good, until the male blond annoying instructor that was in the back with me, thought my horse was moving too slow. I on the other hand was comfortable with the speed the horse was walking. So this male instructor makes the horse buck to catch up to rest of the horses. I dont understand why he would make the horse buck if I am a first time rider! We was not even that far behind either!
I was so scared the horse bucked, but then stopped. The instructor made the horse buck by making a sound with his voice!
The horse stopped bucking after he was close enough to the other horses. So I was calm.
The famale instructor did try and give me a little more lessons on the trail since she finally realized I was having a bit of a hard time. She was more professional than the guy!
Just when I start getting comfortable again on my horse taco. The male instructor thinks my horse is going to slow again, makes the sound for the horse to buck. He Just takes it upon himslef , without telling me anything, and the horse bucks, but this time does not stop with the rest of the horses, and just keeps bucking even when I pulled on the rane.
I ended up flying off the horse!! I was just praying to god that I was not going to be a cripple! I am getting married next year so It was important that I was in one piece!
When I was able to get up from the ground the instructors asked if I was okay then tried to get me on the horse and clearly I am not a fool! I ended up just walking the rest of the way back from the trail. It was time for me to take control of myself, just like I took control over the fact that I wore the helmet when the instructor told me I did not need it! I dont even want to think about what would have been had I not went with my own instinct and worn one!

I've been to this place many times, and its amazing how these cruel ppl get away with it. first of all Anthony is a very moody and controlling guy. Everyone there is afraid of his wrath and moody temperment. He is mr, know it all. He can be charming and sweet if he is in the mood , or if your a sexy girl. His brother and father Tony Sr. are really nice guys. Their customer service sucks, most of the guides are15-19 yr old girls, who arent certified or have a clue. they are mostly underpaid kids who have no idea how to be a guide. I have seen many times how they let horses bolt, and ppl who have fallen off. Then that mean nasty biatch who sits in the front , she is tonys mistress is a major nasty biatch. never smiles and has an attitude. she messed up Anthony's marriage. Then there is this drug crazed guide Howie the druggie who has crippled a cop and sat in jail & he brags about it, he abuses and hits horses. That guy belongs in a mental institution!!!
The horses are old and are basically one step before the glue factory. He wont spend money on a decent horse. The saddles are total shyt too. I feel bad how they treat the horses. Starve them and neglect their basic needs. Many of the horses have bad feet and should be ridden I have seen how they stumble. Its really a shame. The lessons are a joke. There is this one fat teacher who screams at everyone. I have heard tony make racial jokes when he thought no one was listening. I heard him say " thoes damn kikes". jHe keeps raising the prices & the lousy boarding is like 1000$..!. The barn is disgusting, they keep the horses in these small tight stalls and really over work them. The beach and trails are really nice though. Also its shocking how they have no regard to safety. i know a guy who had his horse run off and he fell and cracked his ribs. a normal guide would neve let a horse pass, i could go on and on. overall you could have fun , but the nasty attitude really gives you a bad feeling when you leave. Most owners have a love for their horses. For Anthony its all about the buck.

I am a former resident of Queens, New York, and this goes out to all who have expressed both positive and negative reviews. I started trail-riding at the Academy, and had nothing but pleasant experiences. Once I became attached to a special horse, they always had her available each time I was there, eventually I purchased the horse from them & boarded her there. Great environment, have moved since, but miss them terribly. Princess has since passed on, but if I ever moved back there, I wouldn't hesitate to board with them. Thank you Tony & Anthony, for everything! As far as the trail horses are concerned, those of you complaining about instruction, take a lesson! The trail horses and tack are checked by the pushers before heading out, and checked again at a point before any quick riding is done. I know, as a former trail rider, and as the mom of two pushers. JBRA is very strict with their pushers, and do have the safety of riders in their interest. As for the health of the trail horses, I remember when the equine flu fell upon all stables, and JBRA immediately quarantined. The traill horses are healthy, and that's why none of them contracted the flu. As far as trail horses suddenly running or rolling, all horses will barn rat, and roll, if the rider doesn't follow the instructions of the pusher. Before you start slamming JBRA, try walking a mile in their very well developed, heavily burdened, professional shoes. And as far as management and staff, I've watched first-hand how they have handled rude, dissatisfied customers who rode without having knowledge or common sense to follow instruction, and koodos to them for dealing with the nastiness they encounter. How about staying there for a day and see how many smiles they create? With only 13 adverse reviews, I'd say the positive is without a doubt winning. As for the negative writers, may I suggest a little more humility and a loss less criticism? Go ahead and visit what else is out there, you'll soon see that JBRA rocks!

I went to Jamaica Bay Riding Academy yesterday for my anniversary. It was a lot of fun and there was a lot to explore when riding, the trails are confined to almost like its own island. I didn't like that I didn't get an abiding horse he had to be kicked in order for him to continue riding, but overall i really enjoyed it. People should experience it for a day, its affordable and its fun, a great gift to someone to experience. Have fun and be safe :D

Jamaica Bay offers reasonable prices for an expensive hobby. The people that work there are more than willing to help when you have a problem or a question. I feel as though I am walking into my second home whenever I enter the place. Nothing compares to the beautiful trails and beach on a beautiful day. The horses are well cared for by very knowledgeable owners. I have taken lessons there for a few months and have learned a great deal. The trainers know what they are doing, and how to help from the ground. I highly recommend this place, and if the chance ever arises my first horse will be boarded there. Don't miss out on a fun filled day because of bitter people's, bitter reviews =)

Jamaica bay riding academy is the best place to be. Nothing can compare to what this place can do for people. They have a great therapeutic program for disabled people. this program has showed miracles happen with most of the students. we found this program by going horseback riding, which by the way was a beautiful ride along a 2 mile beach front with great trail guides. the guide had suggested this program for nephew who has MS and has shown GREAT improvement. my son also takes lesson there with a very sweet and intelligent instructor. this place is amazing and i dont know what i would do without it!

I do not recomened going to Jamaica bay riding academy. I went there last summer on a beautiful day to take a private lesson on the beach witch cost 120.00. Instead, I was given a private walking trail ride by a 15 year old groomer making minimum wage that offered me no instruction whatsoever. I learned absolutly nothing about horseback riding. When the "lesson" was over I spoke with a maneger about my supposed lesson in which I was taught absolutly nothing. The only thing I was offered was a 20% discount on another lesson. The maneger was rude and obnoxiouse and this horse stable is greedy. i do not recommend this stable if you are looking to learn how to correctly ride a horse.

I work very long hours and unfortunately I don't have a lot of time to ride. JB's trails go out at various times of the day which is very accommodating to my schedule. The horses are well maintained and the guides were great. My sister has been taking lessons at JB for 5 years, and she loves it.

Before I went to Jamaica Bay, I decided to read some reviews - which was a mistake. If I had listened to the reviews, I would have lost a day of fun and excitement for my family and I.

We took a private trail ride on the beach which I have to say - it didn't feel like I was in Brooklyn anymore. It was so peaceful, the tide was low, the trails were great. My daughter was in her glory not only by riding a horse, but she couldn't stop laughing when she saw the bunny rabbits. She now takes weekly lessons, and the instructors are very professional. They hosted a horse show recently of which my daughter's deterimination to become a better rider has increased significantly. They made a great family day for us, and they continue to guide my daughter's riding ability in the right direction.

I have been riding off and on my whole life and consider myself and good rider. I take lesson at Jamaica Bay Riding Academy when ever I have the chance. I truly enjoy it there. There is such a fun vibe. Everyone is down to earth and is there just cause they love being around horses.I could spend hours after my lessons with the people. The trainers and the workers clearly are horse lovers.

The trails can not be matched. I have inquired about possibly keeping a horse there if the opportunity arised and it is certainly the most affordale place in the tri-state area with not only an indoor ring but a tack shop on premise!

I have taken lessons from a few different trainers and like most places there are intructors that cater to different levels of riding.

I have a great time with the trainer I ride with at the moment and enjoy my time there.
I highly recommend this stable.

Went to Jamaica Bay and had the best trail ride of my life. Good horses and great trail guides. Beach front riding on a sunny day was the most exhilarating experience of my life. Would be a good experience for adults and children.
Beach front riding in Brooklyn! You realy feel like your in the country. Highly recommended.

JBRA is a disgusting, rat filled barn. They are cheap, malicious and greedy. They do not care about any horse health conditions and require you to use their vets and farriers, only so that they get a portion of the money you spend on your horse. The workers are abusive, hit horses with shovels and kick them regularly. The staff share the love of horses but if they had any concerns would find a job at a real stable. The kitchen is kept unsanitary with mouse traps and rotten food. The chef doesnt wear gloves and touches your money and then your lettuce. The office lady is a complete bitch, and will sucker you into buying their over priced riding attire or taking the most expensive lesson or trailride possible. They have 14 year old kids taking out trailrides and teaching lessons every weekend, they pay poorly and do not give workers any free food or even water and DO NOT let them bring in any outside food. They set examples by not wearing helmets and smoking in the barn. They also will charge you for everything and do not have an up to date billing system. They write down your monthly bills, board, lessons, exercising on a index card and add fake additional charges all the time. They advertise their board to be 750 a month but only give youe horse maybe 4 flakes of hay a day and half a can of grain.I have never herd of a board bill being less then 1000 dollars a month. They turn horses out in half ass turnouts without hay or water for 30 minutes every other day. The instructors are NOT CERTIFIED and have little to no experience in the field and equestrian atmosphere. The horses are all malnourished and neglected and know little of love and care. All in all this place, is disgusting and infiltrated with greed and neglect to workers, customers and horses. All the comments regaurding positive feedback on this website are from insiders,i.e the owner's children or the owner himself. Pathetic Place dont waste your money it is terribly over priced.

I looked up a place to throw my little daughter's birthday party and I found that jamaica bay riding academy was a very beautiful facility to have it at . I asked my daughter if she wanted to have a pony party. She totally agreed and all of her friends thought that "it would be the coolest party ever"! We met nice people too walk the childeren around. After the party the lovley lady in the office told us about the summer camp in the summer. We met the camp councilers that day and they were very lovley girls. My daughter now attends the summer camp and has been for the last 3 years! She also attends horse shows on professional level. The girls go in groups and have so much funs. I used to be a "soccer mom" but now im a "horse shoiw mom" and I l love it! Jamica Bay is beautiful place for family fun and knowledge on horses.

My experience at Jamaica Bay Riding Academy has been the best experience of my life. I returned back to the stables a bunch of times after my first experience. When i went there for the first time, me and my 5 friends went for my other friends birthday. They gave us nice and slow horses because they knew it was our first time riding. The guides helped us with what ever we needed, and made our first time horseback riding an amazing experience. Later that year my little cousin was looking for a place to have a birthday party and i suggested that they have it at Jamaica Bay Riding Academy. They went ahead and did it and all of the children said that "This was the best birthday party I've ever been to". Jamaica Bay is the only stables i know that has a restaurant & lounge. The bathroom facilities are better than some bathrooms in restaurants. I now take lessons at Jamaica Bay and my instructor is amazing. After the years of my trainer teaching me and improving my skills of riding, i now compete in horse shows every weekend. It is the great atmosphere for families & being around the horses growing up has kept me away from all the "rift raft" in the streets. SO FORGET WHAT EVERYONE ELSE SAYS & GO CHECK OUT THIS AMAZING STABLE!!!!!

As the holidays are fast approaching I was looking for something different to do with my family. I searched the web and found the site listing the most exciting things to do in the city limits. I found a website for Jamaica Bay Riding Academy showing beautiful photos of horses with a lounge area that serves all types of food. I immediately telephoned and spoke to a lovely young lady who helped me tremendously, understanding that my family and I have no experience at all. I took the recommendation for a private trail ride along the beach which lasted for approx. 50 minutes. When we signed up for the appointment we were first offered the use of safety helmets and asked our expeirences with horses. The horses were chosen to our capabilities and the guide who took use out was both knowledgeable and pleasant. The beach is beautiful and it is hard to imagine that we are so close to New York City. After the ride, my family ate a lovely lunch in the lounge while watching other children and adults taking riding lessons. I found the staff knowledgeable and polite, the facility clean considering it is a stable for horses and the amenities more then I expected. Upon our conclusion we all agreed that it was an award winning day and would love to repeate the day!!

A very pretty facility, for which little rent and no property taxes paid due to a sweet deal on Federal land. Any knowledgeable horse person would puke at the condition of the horses, the sex show that passes for instruction, and the overall feel that this is the McDonalds of "riding academies"

Jamaica Bay is amazing in more ways than one. It is like my second home but I do have some not-so-nice stories to tell. The horses are taken care of by the management. As KATNY says, find out what you are talking about BEFORE you write anything. I will agree with what some people say about JBRAs trail horses. On saturday, August 1, 2009, I went to do volunteer work for a program called Seaside Therapeutic Riding that is held at JBRA. Since there was no work at that moment I was helping out by rinsing down some of JBRAs trail horses. Two of the horses I rinsed down looked pretty nice. Two others, though, were horrible. One was Spanky - he was skin and bones but he is also really old so I understand why he would be skinny. But not that skinny. The other was Sunny. Sunny is a very gentle gelding that looks like he's bow-legged. He could barely walk and I felt sorry for him because he is a TRAIL HORSE. The Trail Horses should be able to endure long trail rides. Still, it is true what KATNY says. A lot of the horses there are well over twenty years old and are all still able to work like younger horses. Some examples are lesson horses like Court Square and Rocky or one of Seaside's horses, Babalouie who is well over 30 years old. Again, don't complain about prices because in my experience, the only OTHER place to go riding is Kensington Stables in Brooklyn which is just horrible. If you think the horses at JBRA are treated badly, then you should go to Kensington. About the smoking thing - there are people that do smoke but they DO NOT smoke in the barn. They are NOT stupid people! Please, stop dissing JBRA when there are places that are MUCH worse.

I am a customer for years, and I am a serious rider. All of my horses have always been taken care of by the mgmt better than I would ever know how to do myself. To many (most) of the negative comments here - one big reply: Know what you talk about before talking. Many people come to the stable expecting a white stallion carry them proudly and gracefully through the forest and on the ocean shore. That's not how it works. I never hear people cursing out a gym mgmt for the fact that the first time you visit you can't do things right and then get sore. Same here. You have to know a bit about horses, and you must be prepared to take risks. Horses are living creatures with their own mind - they have moods, personalities, experiences. To those who attempted to cry fowl for the horses' condition - let me ask you this - do you even know how long horses live?? Do you realize what wonderful care it takes for a horse to live to 25 AND still be fully able to work? JBRA owners have saved scores of horses from sudden sickness or nursed them after traumas back to success. To those who complain about prices - puhleeez, pick up the phone and make some phone calls. You will not find anything nearly reasonably priced within dozens of miles from here. Try it, I dare you. Nor will you find a place where you can ride on the beach. Or bring your kids for summer/winter camps, birthday parties. Or propose to your chosen one on a meadow. Or come help disabled kids gain a new life through equine therapy. Really, please do know what you speak about. Learn about working with horses first. Until then, remember to respect those who already know and do it for you.

I've seen the inside and out of this place. And let me tell you, at first glance, I too was fooled. Although a bit put off by the 20-some horses clearly malnourished, neglected, and lame, stuck in standing stalls in the first isle, I was distracted by the prospect of a barn this high functioning in the city.
I wish I had run out of there faster than I set foot. They run you dry. The quality of the trail rides are maybe worth 5 dollars. The employees are overworked and underpaid, horses are worked harder and fed less than the employees are paid. With the exception of maybe two school horses, they are all skin and bones and dead lame. Do those people care? Not in the least. If they can still get money out of it, they're not going to give those poor horses breaks.
That grassy turnout you see in the website? What a joke! The horses get turned out in tiny mud paddocks with no grass or water, every other day, for maybe an hour or two at a time. Everyone, including the owner, smokes in the barn. The horses stalls a bedded with straw. Fire hazard? Yep.
I wouldn't wish the treatment of these horses on my worst enemy. I heard someone once refer to it as "Auschwitz for horses."
I will never, NEVER go back. I don't suggest you ever go.

If people have observed the maltreatment to these horses, then we should all complain. Horses should not be treated maliciously. They are not there to just bring you money for your business. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Horses deserve to be happy and to be treated with love and care. I can not belive you do not even keep your stables clean. These poor creatures can become infected and develop health complications because of your greed. I think we should report this to the Dept. of health or to an animal rights group. Horses should not be deprived of their rights. If you want to start a business using horses you MUST be responsible to take care of them as well. They think and feel just like we do. I am disgusted.

Pros: None

Cons: Cruel people, cruelty to horses

nce again JBRA is amazing, irreplacable and lovable... if you spend time to get to know it. of course most riders were beginners on the beach, it's a tourist Attraction. duh. and if you say the ring is tiny you obviously havnt been to jamaica bay. and the lady with the

horse who kicks? I know her. I know the horse, he's vicious =] if you can't controll you're horse going in a different direction you obviously have a lot to learn. JBRA is amazing. but you have to live their to understand.

Honest with you, instructures, some of them are ok and some of them are not. I read the review people wrote before, which I agree on
1. "priority here was money"
2. Dirty
3. No love
4. Rude people
5...... on and on....

And also I think they employees are under paid. The feeling I have is, when you go in there, everyone is sucking your money out of your pocket. Everyone has attitude, espically the owner, Anthony and Debby. That f*cking b*tch is a b*tch, no patience what so ever, very very rude, and alway shows you the ugly face ever! She is never wrong. Shame for their God! And Anothy is f*cking id*ot, he thinks that he knows everything in the world. I am telling you, if they are out of business right now, they can't survive because they know nothing. I am scretching my head why he can keep up their business until now.

I think the only people here giving JB good rating are their own people. If you want to ride, go somewhere else. Jamaica Bay Riding Academy INC is not recommanded.

NOTE:
If one person feel bad about them, that person could be crazy. But if two people or more feel the same way, and gave them low rates, you, the reader should consider the truth!

I have ridden in every equestrian center around New York and this one is by far the worst. When i went out, the group was led by only one indifferent guide. The horses had been kept in tiny stalls and clearly had not enough exercise; they bunched up in a group and began to gallop. At least one man was thrown off his horse and landed, thankfully, in the bushes. Many of the group were beginners and just didn't know any better. I knew enough to see that the horses were panicked. I dismounted and walked my horse back to the barn. It is a shame - the location is stunning. This place needs oversight, regulation, and frankly, new management.

Cons: unsafe, dirty, horses poorly kept, poorly trained, and poorly stabled

I have been riding horses my whole life. I decided to start again. Since there are basically no stables in my area, I did some research and found Jamaica Bay Riding Academy. My first impression was the sight of the run down stables and the rude people there. All the teachers there think that they are way better than you, when most of them aren't. I was in the ring and this lady on this huge horse said watch out, he kicks. I say okay and pass them. I end up behind her again because my horse kept going to the right since he wasn't used to changing direction for some reason (hmmmm) and she says to me HEY! i wasnt kidding he kicks- she was trotting around the small ring they have there and her horse took up basically two lanes because he was so huge.
Another rider came up to me in the stable when i was walking my horse in. The guy yelled at me saying i was holding it wrong.. when i was not. My teacher proceeded to put my horse into this tiny stall where they cant see out and its dirty with feces and old hay and water. Not a nice place to keep a horse.
As for the horses there, my horse would only walk (probably a trail horse) and my teacher was yelling at me when i couldn't get him to go.

Overall, my teacher was helpful and i learned some new things. The place is very nice outside, with the beach and all. Its expensive and boarding a horse there is out of the question expensive.

I?ve been a rider my entire life and have been to many different barns over the years. Jamaica Bay Riding Academy does not treat their horses with the love, respect and care they deserve. The horses look miserable, scrawny and underfed, it was very upsetting.

I arrived and a couple of questions were fired at me and then a minute later I was send to pick up my horse. I could tell the priority here was money! I felt uneasy immediately as soon as a woman dragged/yanked a horse out for me while yelling at it.

Horsemanship is about communication and partnership. Despite what they may claim this was not the approach at this barn. It seems to favor an old fashioned ?bully the horse into doing what you want? style.

There were a lot of kids riding. As a parent I would never want my child to learn to ride in this manner or that this is an acceptable way to treat animals. Safety is also not a priority here and wearing a helmet is optional for those 16yrs old and older, which does not set a good example.

I put my horse back in a filthy stall with soaked bedding and piles of manure. The stalls were all disgusting. I felt heartbroken to leave my horse there.

The review that lovingsmokey posted below does not surprise me at all and only confirmed my instincts. I wish I had read it before and avoided going.

I will never patronize Jamaica Bay again and I urge you not to!!

My wife and I took a 5 p.m. trail ride. Toward the end of the ride, my wife's horse (Spice) went completely out of control and broke into a mad run. My wife was thrown off the horse and was injured. We spent the night in the emergency room.

Later our "guide" confessed that she was actually a horse groomer and the regular guide didn't feel like taking another trail ride so she was sent out. The groomer said that the horse would not have gone so crazy if a real guide was there. If we had known we were being taken out by a horse groomer, and not a real guide, we would NEVER have agreed to trot and canter (run).

Also, it's optional to wear a helmet for people 16 and over. It should not be optional. The helmet probably saved my wife's life.

Jamaica Bay is \one of the best city barns I have ever been to. I am an experienced rider, certified instructor, and both teach lessons and take out private trail rides.
In response to sexydiva522: It is your responsibility to read anyhting you sign. You are given plenty of time to read through the waiver and are not required to sign it. If you wanted instruction, you should have taken a lesson. Lessons are offered both in the rings and out on the beach. What kind of instruction did you want? I think it is simple enough to walk up the steps and sit on a horse. The horses then walk forward about 5 steps to a closed gate where the girths (strap that fastens around a horse's chest to hold the saddle in place) are tightened and the stirrups fixed to proper length for that rider. A girth cannot be tightened until the rider is on because the horse will develop painful sores and the girth will pinch the skin. No galloping is ever done on a regular trail ride, you were only trotting, which is a nice slow jog, albeit bouncy. If you want to learn how to trot properly, take a lesson. You could have asked the trail guide to stop trotting and told them you were uncomfortable if it bothered you. I have seen 4 year old children who have never been on a horse before ride Sombrero and he is a favorite of all the barn's volunteers. Horses are animals, not machines. They are not perfect, they will try to get away with as much as they can, and no matter how well trained a horse is he/she will know when a novice rider is on them and will do whatever they want. Anyone who (a) hasnt ridden in a while or (b) has never ridden before gets sore after riding. It tkaes muscles you don't use for anything else. About the flies...its a wooded area near the beach...its nature...there are bugs...you can't put fly spray on a horse too much or it will hurt their skin. The horses are all sprayed at least once a day if the flies are out.
If you like horses, go for a ride and enjoy!

Cons: gets busy on weekends, rings are sometimes crowded

This was my 1st riding experience. It was the last ride for Saturday at 5 p.m. We arrrived, first and foremost, they did not give us any instruction what so ever. There were steps, they told us to mount and the horses started moving. We were told nothing about the saddle, the reins or anything.
We signed a waiver when we paid and if you didn't read it, it was your liability. Ex. If you felt the saddle loosening, it was your job to alert someone. Safe enough, yet not many ppl read those waivers, might I add.
Next, they told us nothing about the galloping, that it was best for you to either lift off the seat or either lean forward sitting. No instruction, no formality, no manners. I had an unruly horse named Sombrero. I was told by the trail guide, "You have that horse for a reason". How can you say that to someone, a client? It was so unprofessional.
Another unruly horse was given to a woman that was clearly not ready for her 1st horse riding experience, she had heeled sandals. If they could read people so well, why would you do that to someone, to get a kick from their fear? I don't know, I would not recommend this place to anyone. My pelvic & back hurt because like I said, no one told me how to sit, how to lean in and so forth. It cost $30 for a trail on the beach. The beach was beautiful, the experience was horrible. One more thing, the flies were eating at the horses and they didn't even bother to spray them. The horses were so agitated.

Avoid Jamaica Bay at all costs. When you first arrive, it seems lovely, rides on the beach, a big indoor arena, lots of cute horses. But after you've been there long enough, the cracks begin to show. I rode there for well over a year, far too long. In that time, I saw many terrible things.
The schooling horses are neglected and underfed and receive the most minimal of care. Their bedding is unsanitary, they recycle it from the stalls of privately boarded horses. This would be absolutely unheard of anywhere else. Most of the schooling horses are lame. In my time there, I never once saw anyone even pick their feet. However, I've seen grooms throw brushes at horses heads.
The conditions the trail horses are kept in are even worse. They stand in cramped walk-in slots with barely any room to lie down. There is no screening process/weight restrictions for riders. Trail horses may go out up to 5 times a day on weekends, forced to run on poor trails and deep sand like an urban stampede.
All of the horses are overworked without mercy. I have personally witnessed a 25 year old horse used in four one-hour lessons in a row. Horses drop dead at this stable on a regular basis. The ASPCA has been called to this barn on numerous occassions.
This stable serves one purpose: to make a lot of money for the owners. Equine welfare and horsemanship is non-existent. Most of the instructors are unqualified. The good ones come and go very quickly. Riders are at risk of getting seriously hurt.

The website with the pretty photos makes this place look like a dream. Here's the reality: the facilities and trails are terrible, the management doesn't care about customers. The turnouts are all mud. The schooling horses and trail horses receive no turnout whatsoever. The horses are unschooled. The chances of getting hurt are far greater than learning anything about horsemanship.

If this place is as good as it claims to be, why aren't there more good reviews?
