My daughter has been going to TLC Adventures since they started their Downtown Rochester center in 2005. I can honestly tell you that cribs are ONLY ever used in the infant room. Once children are old enough to move up (and they actually go to the Pre-Toddler room before they go to the Toddler room), they do sleep on cots only. AND, if any of the staff is on vacation or goes on break, another person is put in the room to balance the ratio of adults/children. Children are not moved around to accommodate staff - staff is moved around to accommodate the children. Each room has the same consistent staff members and then there are "floaters" who come in to cover breaks and lunches. So the children are with the same familiar people each day. As for the center being in the Federal Building, yes it is, but I have always found this to be a positive thing! To access the center, you do have to go through Security screening (show ID, walk through the metal detector, etc.), and then there is a passcode to enter the actual daycare. If you have a problem with ALL adults being screened, including yourself, then maybe this daycare isn't for you. I will also say this ... all employees are background checked by NYS (as all daycare workers are), AND they are also given Federal background checks. If you don't want the person(s) taking care of your child(ren) DOUBLE checked, then I guess this center isn't for you either. Also, someone made it sound like it's in a dungeon setting by being in the basement of the building - that is certainly not the case. The daycare is well-lit and decorated with artwork made by the children, AND there is even a walk-out, enclosed play area outside for the children. My daughter is 9 now, and only goes to the daycare during school breaks and in the summer, but she still loves it. During the Summer, they schedule several field trips with the kids (ages 4 and up) that you can choose to send your child(ren) on (or not). Honestly, I can't say enough good things about the staff there. My daughter knew all of her colors by the time she was 18 months old, she was reading at age 4, and was counting to well over 100 by the time she went to Kindergarten. Also, the rates are VERY competitive.
So if you want your child safe, secure, loved and learning, then check out TLC. Go and see for yourself what it's all about! And the Owner herself will tell you ... don't call first ... just show up and tell them you want to check it out. (Any GOOD Daycare Center won't require you to make an appointment.)

The hours are not flexible, because it is in federal building and it is closed on all federal holidays. My child is in the infant room which is wonderful. The staff in that room is very caring and attentive to my child's needs. The same cannot be said for the toddler room. Occasionally my child will go into the toddler room when the staff in the room is on vacation or on break. In the toddler room, they keep my child caged in the crib and they do not feed him. Three times when he has been put in the toddler room he has eaten less than 5 ounces of milk in an 8 hour period. He usually drinks 15 ounces. I am looking for a new daycare. Any recommendations

I toured this center when I was looking for placement for my children. It is located in the basement downtown Rochester and is hard to get to. Parents have to go through a security guard and a metal detector to get to it and have to park in a parking lot and pay to park which is NOT at all convenient.

My son attended TLC for a year. The staff there was amazing with him and always showed him love and cared for him as he were their own. They go above and beyond when it came to educating my son even though he was only 8 months when he started. Just during the time he was there, my son learned basic ways of communicating thru sign language, he was already being potty trained, cleaning up after him self, and numerous activities that improved his fine motor skills. My son was almost 2 when we moved away and now at age 3 I am complimented all of the time due to his knowledge of things and manners. He is already able to count to 20+, recognize his alphabets and numbers 1-10, and basic addition. TLC really puts "tender loving care" into their children and the children's futures.

As the owner of TLC Advetures I would question Gene J.'s assessment of the center since we do not have any parent by that name who has ever been enrolled at the center. Possibly Gene is from a competing daycare center and this is the only way he can make his center appear to be better than it actually is. First, the toddlers do not sleep in cribs - all older children use cots (Gene would know this if he had ever been inside the daycare center). Secondly, no child ever leaves a classroom because the teacher "went on vacation" or 'took a break". TLC Adventures has sufficient staff available to cover all vacations and breaks and we do not have ANY classroom that has only one teacher in it (again if Gene had actually been inside the center, he would know this). Lastly, yes parent and visitors do have to enter the building through a metal detector which is viewed by a security guard - what better way to assure the safety of your child!
Oh, and the parking...registered parents are given FREE parking in front of the Federal Building for easy access. I welcome all families to visit the childcare center and prove to yourself what I've said and what a great place to enroll your child!
