I walked in here on a Saturday night (May 19th, 2012 around 1:00am) and obviously it was very crowded.

The bartenders (Male and Female) were counting money and a lot of it. If you know how to maintain a cash register these too fools

I love the ceiling! I'm not into booshe. The bartenders were nicer than the ones back home in the most popular lesbian bar in Houston Tx.

This place is great if your looking to soak up local flavor. We were out or towners looking for a good girl bar to grab a drink or two or 10 so we stop by Monster (very friendly door man) in Greenich Village and he pointed us in the direction of two bars 1. Heneriettas Hudson and 2. Cubby Hole. After walking about 8 block we found Henriettas and yep you guessed it, it was kareoke night. Lame I know. We left there after we couldnt find a seat or get a drink and headed to Cubby Hole. After a ten minute walk we found it easily. The place doesnt seem like much at first. After we approached the bar and met the very friendly bartender who scoffed at our age we had a seat at an empty table in front of the bar and truly enjoyed the rest of the night. The name of the joint emplies its space...cubby---hole. Literaly the place is as big as a hotel room, but I the atmosphere is great. Friendly locals jamming to the hottest beats via a prepaid jukebox (no dj). The lack of dj was fine with us because it equated to a no cover charge for my long time babe and me. In a city where tipping is obiligitory and the cost of everthing is sky high the free entry was a big bonus. The Cubby Hole was the exclamation point on our trip to NYC. We hop on the the #1 subway, got of at Greenich Village walked a few block and met a really cool guy, hung out at a great bar, and had an awesome time. Don't miss the Cubby Hole. A New York City treasure.

Pros: Great service with a smile, quick drinks, great music

Cons: Too small and closed way too early

This bar is wonderful because the staff makes you feel like home and the patrons are just fun. In my life I am always taken to the "hot" spaces but I always look forward to coming here.

Finally a female bartender on Thurs....It's the only night i get to go so forgive me for being excited, it's nice to be served by another lesbian, well i think she's a lesbian! You cannot go wrong with this bar. You meet people from all over the country. Greatness!

My boyfriend and I first came here when we had a lesbian friend in town, a few months ago, and we love it. Great vibe, energy, and friendly staff. I don't know what annabellee is talking about. Lisa is one of the nicest bartenders and makes everyone feel welcome, and judging from the amount of girls that flock around her, a pretty popular one too.
The only negative is on the weekends, when it can get uncomfortably crowded.

One thing that the lesbian community has been missing for years is a friendly (female) bartender and the Cubbyhole seems to have found one! The male bartenders i love - i'm secretly in love with Christophe! Blonde and very friendly, not sure of her name (she's there on tue nights) but it's refreshing to see someone enjoy what they do.

Congratulations Cubbyhole!

Cubby is a great bar with a relaxed and very friendly atmosphere - easy to go to by yourself and meet some new friends. Only consistent drawback is depressed bartender Lisa who can be quite rude - as a former bartender clear burnout is in effect - c'ome on cubby and hire someone with a personalty, looks and some cool drink skills - you'll be packed even more!! All in all of course a cool, relaxed place to feel very comfortable among other friendly patrons and some cool decor!

I was shocked when i read the last review of what is now one of my favourite bars in NYC and i could not disagree more. There is a reason why the bar is packed on a tue night, (1) because the margaritas are good. (2) they're $2.00! - where does that happen! (3) the bartenders are extremely friendly and wouldn't know how to give someone attitute.... So clearly that person had a bad day and judged everyone they came in contact with!
MOVING ON, i went last monday for the first time for my birthday and the blonde bartender payed a lot of attention to us, gave us delicious shots and made sure we were comfortable had a great time. She even stayed after her shift gave us pizza and danced with us! LONG LIVE THE CUBBYHOLE!

the $2 dollar margaritas were awful! the place stinks. the crowd was of obnoxious people, losers. the blonde bartender had some attitude, who needs an old chick to tend bar anyway? the place is simply dirty. ugly people, ugly bartender, ugly bar. the cubbyhole in one word? loserville.

i have never met or felt uncomfortable in the CubbyHole - everyone is extremely relaxed and friendly.... Try it again on a tue or thur, Sundays are great also....Christopher and Ellen are just some of the really friendly bartenders there, not forgetting cutie pies Lisa and Carla. It deserves to be given another chance....

Garanteed a good time!

I really like this bar. I usually have a great time, eveyone is generous and i usually meet nice people. the decorations are fun and the place is either bumping or really layed back. They have a great early evening crowd during the week. the staff is always around and really nice and helpful.

I have one complaint though, the monday night bartender.... He is very strange, he is always joking around and not very good at his job. AND HE SKIPS MUSIC ON THE JUKEBOX. soooo rude! I put in a lot of money and he skips it or he says it is broken so he can listen to his ipod. And why does he pull down his pants? it's gross! I know he is just trying to be funny and queeny but YECH! I don't want to see his butt. Enough complaining.

The new girl is great, she's a really great bartender. Tuesdays, wednesdays and Thursdays are the most fun. The weekends can be a little too crowed. I like coming to the cubby because I don't feel like I am being cruised. Easy and fun. Plenty of guys for me to meet and plenty of girls to talk to too. I think if you have a bad experience here, you should come back and give it another try. And now that Shag and Ruby is closed, i will be coming here more often.

Biased as I may be, the Cubbyhole is the best bar in NYC. Absolutely.

The Cubbyhole is familial and friendly. A true neighborhood bar. Teeming with gay men and women, straight people, couples and singles. Every walk of life can find comfort and fun at the Cubby. The dedicated staff is always around to help out even when "off duty." The bartenders are all great, from fun loving to intellectual, from crazy queen to pretty lady. Lots of regulars and lots of newbies. This is a great bar, you will never see a more eclectic group of misfits mixed with such a fun decor. Amazing specials during the week, frozen drinks, margaritas and an astoundingly massive music selection.

Never in my life have I encountered such a RUDE, OBNOXIOUS place filled with rude, obnoxious bigots. Last night, my cousin and I ducked into this joint for a drink. As soon as we walked in, some biznatch with a mohawk started screaming, "I BET YOU'RE STRAIGHT!! YOU DON'T BELONG HERE!" Soon, we were being harrassed by 40 angry women. Obviously, we left, only to hear "good riddance, straight girls" as we walked down the street

Ursiemonster, sounds like you're blinded by your own bitterness. If no one talks to you at this bar (probably the friendliest bar in nyc) then there probably is good reason. Consider staying on the westcoast, it's obvious you don't want to be in nyc.....

$2 Margaritas! Need I say more? So much fun! Great bar, great atmosphere. After work I go to the cubbyhole. I am usually there on Tuesdays for the margaritas, the bartender is uber cool, he poors them strong and has a cool dog. The other bartender is fierce too. Go to the cubbyhole you'll love it. some of the reviews are bad on this site. I do not see what those people are talking about. I always enjoy myself.

I was excited to see this place based on the reviews, but was pretty disappointed. My girlfriend and I trod over to the village on a snowy night (the neighborhood was really pretty, I'll give it that), and thought that we would find a warm atmosphere where we could chat with some regulars. The guy behind the bar *studiously* ignored me standing there waiting to order for upwards of 10 minutes (twice!!!) while chatting with his girlfriend, and then made a shiyty, overpriced drink from the specials menu that he didn't even know existed (or what was in it). Overall, I found it pretencious and tacky, more urban German breeder bar than the laid-back west coast mixed atmosphere I love. After spending an hour (and upwards of $50), not a single person smiled or was polite. Apparantly you need a big "SPECIAL" sign over your head to wander in and have a nice evening.

I've been going to the Cubby for over 10 years! It's the most unique place on earth!
It's mixed girl and boy friendly. The staff is always friendly and the service is always with a smile!
The juke box is off the hook. The drink specials are awesome! Weekends are packed so get there early and check out the eye candy behind the bar! Jackie & Carla!

My girlfriend and I love this bar. We always have fun. I really like Lisa, Mike and Christoph. We come for the $2 margaritas on Tuesdays and Mike is so cute, he seems to be really proud of his "special" drinks. Lisa always has hot girls around her, she can make any night hot. But Chirstoph is the best, he ALWAYS WANTS TO PARTY. Thursdays are great but, they always yell last call around 2 so he can go party somewhere else! LOL! He's is so funny, we always have fun!!!

I went to check this place out one weekday evenning in June all by myself. Being a pretty friendly and outgoing person trying to meet new people, I sat next to a couple of ladies and we chatted at the bar. Everything was fine until after a couple of drinks, the bartender walked over and told me I was talking too loud. I was the only black woman at the bar, and I was alone, as the women next to me could not figure out why this was said with everyone yelling and the music blasting, I complied as best I could. I continued to talk with the women until the bartender then told me that she should throw me out because people left because of me. I knew this was not true because I did nothing wrong and if it had been true she would have told me immediately to leave. she also said it very casually like it was personal. I wanted to leave at this point, and did after I had a very angry remark for her for the way I was treated. when I called the next day to speak to the manager, she would not come to the phone. The women I sat with at the bar advised me that I should never go back there, and I haven't been back since. No one should be treated that way.

Randomly barhopped here on a date, neither of us realizing it was a lesbian bar until spying a sign on a shelf saying "voted best lesbian bar" -- a look around showed mostly white guys in their 30s to 60s. This was happy hour on a Saturday, so YMMV, but it wasn't at all crowded (though more customers showed up as the evening drew on). I was immediately struck by the cool decor (rainbow-colored mobiles might have been a hint, in retrospect) but the skeleton tucked away behind the smiling sealife was ubercool. The bartendrix was very friendly, the music selection on the digital jukebox is awesome. We were able to order incredible crab cakes from a nearby restaurant. Relaxed, friendly, fun, and happy hour drinks at least were more than reasonable for Manhattan. I know I'll go again.

This place was a laugh. The bar was more than packed. There was one single bartender behind the bar that could not keep up to the high demand of the customers. She was a lady that could not make a smile on Saturday night with long dark hair. We were told she owned the bar so we could only assume she was to cheap to hire the proper staff. I had two gay friends with me that were guys and they were treated even more rude. Very unfortunate unfriendly place to visit for a gay girl or guy. Dirty, smelly and filthy restrooms. Avoid this at all cost.
Happy Gay Pride to the other great bars in the area!

My girlfriends and I were out to celebrate. we were ready to spend some serious money. The bartender grunted and gave us the wrong order. People were waiting for drinks and the bartenders were kidding around with themselves and not serving the crowd. My drink glass was cracked and the bathroom was dirty and smelled. Do not waste your time here.

I thought this place was cute, so I gave it a few chances. Each time I was there the bartender was very rude to me and my girlfriend and acted as if she was doing us a huge favor by going out of her way to get us drinks. The first time I thought maybe she was having a bad day. I work in the service industry, so I know how at times it can be rough. However, after my fifth visit there with the same results, I have given up. I have brought friends and out of town guests there, only to be disappointed again and again. I suggest you skip this bar and spend your money somewhere else.

Cubbyhole has been my place to be for a few years now. The drinks are strong and generously priced. The bartenders don't always rub right with everyone, but that is because they are all such individuals. I love this bar, and its bartenders. The owner is often there and is very friendly and cordial. She runs the place like a family, and you can expect an "off duty" bartender to be there just hanging out every night. Fun and friendly. Good Juke Box. Best of all: The Cubby is the ONLY truly gay and lesbian mixed bar in the city, with friendly straights too. A fine example of a West Village neighborhood bar.

This little Haven is my newest place to be! This is the best place to be on Tuesdays, Michael & Lisa are the best and He never forgets a name! I love boys, I love girls & I love the Cubby Hole!

Pros: Michael, Lisa, HAPPY HOUR

Cons: Last Call, Going home

.

I've been to the Cubby at least once a week for five years now. I've met so many new friends, I have never been to such a mixed & friendly bar. Everyone gets along, gay, straight, bi & trans. Don't be surprised if everyone in the place belts out the words to a song playing on their state of the art juke box. Bartenders are all great! especially the sexy Jackie on Saturday nights.

I've popped into this spot alone, with friends, with former coworkers, to get out of the rain. 1st time was December of 1993 & it was my '1st' bar. The mood & attitude from its patrons was cold and aloof. I ordered & the bartender behaved as if (S)he were doing me such a huge favour breaking a sweat preparing it. Only used to selling pre-mixed Cape Codders I guessed. Around were countless strands of holiday lights & decor caked w/ dust & just looked tacky & unclean, it was claustrophobic, etc. I left. I L8R tried 2 give the bar flies the benefit of the doubt. Maybe everyones' cat died. For years I'd been dragged there 6x's by people that wanted 2 see it. The last time was Summer. My friends agree when I write that sadly nothing has changed. People, there are better LGBTQ watering holes out there.

Although new to the Cubbyhole, after a few visits i felt like a regular, because the some of the regulars and the bartenders recognized me and remembered my drink! The décor is busy, but makes it festive and inviting. The weekends can be packed, but during the week it can slow down and is a great place to meet girls (and the occasional boy!). The bartenders are always ready for a good chat. If your nice to them, they'll be nice to you!

This bar is awsome. Great decore and friendly crowd, Stay away on Thursday nights if you are not up for a sloppy bartender that only buys drinks for every guy that will look at him. Sorry girls, the other nights are great! Say hello to Tanya the owner, nicest lady in the city!

Cons: Thur. night bartender, Gets hot, NO AIR!

Cubbyhole is a great little place to meet with friends & socialize. It's cozy, uniquely decorated, and has an ambience that cannot be found elsewhere. It does not serve food but you can call for delivery; just ask the bartender for the menus of nearby restaurants. Their happy hour prices are in effect until 7pm every day and they have great specials on different days of the week. You can watch sporting events with your friends while still enjoying the total bar environment. And yes, it can be romantic.

If you can stand the decor, this is a happy little place to drink. Crowd is friendly, though non-regulars may feel a little left out. The bartenders are alternately nice or prickly, but they'll let you order in food to supplement the popcorn they offer at the bar, and even supply menus.
