Message from Brother Jimmy's Bait Shack

Editorial by Citysearch

The Scene
Spring Break never ends at Brother Jimmy's, a rowdy post-collegiate hangout where the air smells sweetly of stale beer and the chipper waitresses look like Hooters imports. The modus operandi here is simple: to drink and eat as much as humanly possible. For 70 bucks, a group of four can suck down the blinding, two-and-a-half gallon Trash Can Punch. And yes, they even serve Pabst Blue Ribbon and Natural Light.

The Food
The Southern menu is cheap and generously portioned. The ribs are among the best in the city and are available in both "wet" and "dry rub" versions. The former are sweeter, juicier and more tender, while the latter are spicier and more savory. Collard greens and mashed potatoes make for good side orders, and the butter-slathered corn bread is moist and sweet. Brother Jimmy's is also good for kids--all children younger than 12 eat for free.

Lots of energy!

by Melissa F. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,168

This is a fun place to hand out with friends and get some good food. Stay at the bar or hang out at the tables. The prices aren't bad and the best table is the big one by the front window.

Perfect place to meet after work for drinks!!! Fun, casual atmosphere ~ decent service, good appetizers to go along with some good brew. Great deals during the week for beer and specialty drinks.

Put some south in yo mouth BBQ...

by Victoria F. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 962

I really like this restaurant but the other day I went there for my daughter's 18th birthday and everything was fine until a roach that was crawling on the wall near our table fell on the table and I had to kill it. At that point my appetite was gone and all I wanted to do was leave. Normally, the food is great and the staff is very nice and friendly but I just guess this was not a good day and it was a Sunday. The prices are good and reasonable and I love their hush puppies with the maple butter and the collard greens are great. All in all Brother Jimmy's is a great place to eat but this past Sunday it turnout bad.

Rude Staff

by KECinNYC

I don't want to speak for the whole staff, because there are a few nice bartenders. But there is a new waitress that was HORRIBLY rude to myself and my friends for no apparent reason. I don't reccommend going there on Thursday nights.

Pros: $2 Beer on Thursdays

Cons: Rude staff

Good food, terrible service

by halli620

I was warned about the service before I went in, so I knew it would be slow, even though it wasn't that full for a Friday evening in the back room. We did have to wait a long time, but the food was good (though I like Famous Dave's BBQ Sauce on Long Island better). But, when we asked for the check, we were charged $66 - and all the two of us had had was an $8.50 sandwich and $3 PBR each, and shared a slice of pie! So that obviously wasn't right (it was another table's receipt, with a $25 pitcher of beer and other stuff), and eventually we were able to catch the waitress's attention to bring us the right check, though it took forever. When she finally did bring it, it then had a $2.50 Coke on it that we didn't order, but we decided to pay for it to hold onto our sanity and not wait another eternity for her to take it off. If you're already in the area and like BBQ, sure, go for the food, but be prepared to wait forever, even if it's not that busy, and check your receipts!

Pros: good food, ok prices

Cons: very very slow service, wrong check

Good Stuff

by lilbige112

I go to the NYSC across the street from Jimmy's and order take out one day. I ordered the bbq sampler where i chose 3 types of ribs and 2 sides (fire fries and mac and cheese) I got the artichoke dip as well. I live 30-40 mins away on the subway. The food was eaten 2 hrs later and it was still good. The ribs were moist and juicy, the artichoke dip was great, the mac and cheese was creamy, but the fire fries were soggy probably because of the down time. I recommend this place if you live or travel around there. I went when the place was empty around 4ish in the afternoon. The food took 20 mins but thats a good thing when it comes to bbq.

Pros: Good food , nice people, good ambiance

Cons: Far

White Trash Wednesday's Rule

by littlejohnnyjohnson

I turned just 21 last Wednesday and my uncle surprised me with the most awesome birthday present. A night at BROTHER JIMMY'S!!!

FIrst, we took advantage of the great specials on Natural Light, only $1 a can. After we got into "partying mood" we ordered the all-you-can buffet. There were so many neat choices, you get 3 to choose from, but I went with 3 orders of meat-loaf. CRAZY RIGHT???!!! I love that stuff, I could have eaten 10 orders.

The waitress were really funny and then kept blowing whistles in my face when my uncle ordered the fish-bowl drink. My uncle is a great guy, and I owe him everything for introducing me to my new favorite restaurant. It's too bad he wasn't there to help me home when I woke up in an alley with no pants on.

Best Trash Can "Fish Bowl" ever had :)

by ghent

I'm not from the South, I'm even not from the States. So I can't really tell how a southern bar would look like. Anyway, I went to the Brother Jimmy's Bait Shack in the Upper East Side last year when I was doing a city trip to NYC. Together with a friend who lives in the city, we finished our night in this nice bar. The staff was very funny and friendly. Even the other cusommers were cool and friendly. But the best was the Trash Can "Fish Bowl" ;). We had a lot of fun with that special offer. I had a really great night. Next time I'm in New York I defitinely will visit the bar again.

Pos: staff, customers
Neg: to far from where I live
recommended: Trash Can Pvnch

Pros: Service, ambience

Cons: to far from where I live :)

Great Take out

by mandissal

As a Southern transplant now living in New York, I'm a huge HUGE fan of the delectable take out at this UES gem. Their mac and chesse is super tasty and the corn bread keeps you coming back from more. I personally recommend the hot or bbq wings. Their take-out service is top knotch-- always very nicely packed with seperate containers and all utensils, etc you need to enjoy your meal. I've never been in to the Bait Shack, but you should definitely think of them for take-out. Absolutely A+.

Pros: Take out

Cons: Expensive ribs

Not my type of place

by eugene9150

I liked the food, but this was a sports bar. I didn't like the atmosphere at all.
The waitress was nice, but other customers were loud, music was country loud and customers were drunk.....oh the drinks were great.

Pros: great food, great drinks

Cons: atmosphere, loud music

good but nothing special

by buonappettio

Its not a bad place but there better ones. The foods okay but certainly not the the best barbeque I 've had. It definitely has a frat party feel to it which may be okay if your single and in your early 20s. I've been their several times (friends who live a block a way insist) and I never been impressed.

Good barbecue, gross frat scene

by tbox77

I am from the South and I know good soul food. The barbecue is pretty good (albeit drastically overpriced), but the rest of the food is lackluster. The atmosphere is revolting --- Basically a barn with junk hung on the walls. It's impossible to enjoy oneself because of all the heavily intoxicated b+t people trying to get picked up. The music is decade nostalgic and the food doesn't quite fill one's need for soul food. Plus, it's way overpriced.

Hit this place on Mondays for $15 all you can eat ribs and wings. It is so yummmmy for the price and you get beers too.
I love the Hush Puppies for an appetizer- only bad food is the nachos bc they are extremely soggy.

Pros: inexpensive

Don't Come for Monday Night Football

by leschukm

I always end my night at one of the three Brother Jimmy's. They have a great scene. The Fish Bowls are dangerous. But great time.
I went last night for Monday Night Football. Big Mistake. They were not prepared and the WORST waitress was in charge of our table. She completely forgot about us. We had to order our pitcher 3 times and she still never brought. Very frustrating. Who can eat wings without cold beer? Good over to 2nd Ave and try out Blondies! Great wings

Pros: Awesome Late Night, Fish Bowls, Good Looking People

Great Place For Partying!

by gigglesnsmiles

My friends & I have been bouncing back & forth between this Brother Jimmy's and the one at 80th & Amsterdam for well over 5 years now. We never miss a Birthday, Thanksgiving Eve, Promotion, or going there for no reason at all. Last year we celebrated New Year's Eve there and it was our best New Year's yet! Go here if you enjoy a party atmosphere with loud music, exciting people, great BBQ food, and you have a laid back personality with a bit of a wild side too. I highly recommend indulging in a fish bowl just once at Brother Jimmy's...I guarantee you'll go back for more.

Pros: Swamp Drinks/BBQ Food, Great Location, Fun Crowd/Atmosphere

Cons: At Times Too Crowded, Must Eat To Sit Down, Small Ladies' Room

Sweet Tea!

by alwaysontheroad

If you're from the south then this has to be a stop on your trip. This place has sweet tea! Wow! Good sweet tea at that. Wednesday night is Southern Appreciation Day, 25% off your bill with a valid southern I.D. The food is great - southern cuisine. It is very busy so get there early. The busier, the louder, and it tends to get very loud in here. If you want a quiet dinner this probably isn't the place to go, but if you want good Southern cuisine, at a reasonable price stop by Brother Jimmy's and soak up the south. Loads of UNC and other ACC memorabilia on the walls too!

Pros: Great food, Sweet Tea, Atmosphere

Cons: Can be noisy

A fun Friday dinner

by jenny4674

I went recently with a friend for dinner and a drink. It is quite loud, but I'm going to chalk that up to the annoying man who was practially sitting on our table for half of the meal. The food was really good, my only complaint was that the portions were too big. My friend and I shared corn fritters (YUM!) and then I got a an appetizer or BBQ rib tips. Was I surprised when it came out! Huge portion. But it was very tasty! I did feel like I was at Hooters, but whatever, it's Friday and the drinks were coming, so who cares?

Pros: Good food, Fun atmosphere

Cons: Loud, Crowded

Good times abound

by ralphmacchio

Not only are the beers cheap and the food pretty good - my friends and I have hooked up with several of the waitresses, who are not afraid to prance around in their tiny t-shirts and little else once they get out of work. For this, I give it rave reviews.

Pros: great service, drunkitude

BBQ Diamond

by garbanz

Thank God good BBQ exists in NY. No babybacks here! Great pork ribs, pork shoulder, and tasty side dishes. They fall into the NY trap of serving the typical SW fare, but steer clear of all that and eat up some BBQ and southern favorites with no frills. The service is good but all the people in the place could slow them down a bit, be patient; enjoy the music, the game, and that cold brew in your hand, you are in for something great!

Pros: Ribs, Pulled Pork, Sides

Cons: Southwest Food, French Fries, corn bread

Pros: Variety, Tasty food, Inexpensive

An insult to Southern food

by chriscp0

The food here is very inconsistent and has become worse over time, which is too bad for anyone that likes Southern cuisine. My boyfriend and I felt ill all night so beware. The atmosphere is a cross between Hooters and a frat party. The place is too loud and the tv volume slowy creeps up and up all night.

Favorite Bar in NYC

by peteypopj

Brother Jimmy's is the best bar in NYC. I have never had a bad time here, never NOT had a conversation with a total stranger, never NOT met someone new. If you're going for the food, TRY THE MAC AND CHEESE! I can't stress that enough. Good food and great waitstaff. They're a great bunch of girls (and darn cute too!). The bartenders are always on the ball and seem to be having fun while making sure everyone gets a drink. Great music too...Fun mix of eras and songs! I can't say enough about Brother Jimmy's. I don't care for the other two locations very much, but this one is great. Get a fishbowl...You'll meet more people than you want to!

Pros: Waitresses, Macaroni & Cheese, Fishbowls

Cons: Far from my apartment

Corn fritters the size of softballs...

by jennem

OK, so everything is fried, covered in cheese, stewed with bacon fat, or some version of pork. So what? Once in a while you need to let loose and eat some down-home barbecue. Hey, at least the barbecue sauce isn't too fattening.

Pros: Great food, Huge portions, Free kids meals

Cons: Slow service, Noisy and crowded, A bit pricey.

Mmmm - Trashcan!

by SouthernerInNY

With a group of rowdy Brits and Texans, we were made to feel right at home in Brother Jimmy's recently, even when we opted for a giant demon punch with 12 straws. Shirts were unbuttoned, dancing (perfect music, guys!) began and all the while the staff (yummy) remained accomodating and even contributed to a great Saturday night out.

Great Ribs and mashed Potatoes

by manonthestreet

Jimmy's has excellent ribs and fixins and is great place to drink and meet people. But besides the fact it does have TVs tuned to sports, calling it a sports bar- I don't see it.

But the BBQ is well worth it and the hook-up quotatient is high.

Darn fine pulled pork

by danapry

Quite simply, the barbecue (and sauce) is great. Coming from someone who has been eating barbecue in the south for years, I'm never disappointed in the food. It's always tasty, well prepared, and affordably priced. They are very accommodating for large groups, and the "Swamp Water" especially adds to the fun experience. With good frineds, good food and a great staff, you are bound to enjoy yourself.

Pros: Menu, Staff, Atmosphere

Cons: TVs can be too loud

Be happy as a pig in mud

by VioletM

With the flashing sign imploring you to EAT MEAT, surrounded by pictures of smiling and dancing pigs everywhere, it might give you pause. Follow your nose instead to go and sink your teeth into tender, juicy ribs with meat that falls off the bone, or wings that can sear the taste buds off your tongue.

Cap that with a cold pitcher of beer on a summer afternoon, and you've got a little slice of Southern heaven in NYC. Snaps to Brother Jimmy's for serving Missippi Mud, evoking JazzFest and gumbo memories for this reviewer.

Put Some South in Yo' Mouth

by sixshootaunc

I'm a student at the University of North Carolina, and I'm interning here for the summer. Whenever I need a taste of Southern Hospitality, great food and drinks, I go to Brother Jimmy's. All of the NC stuff and memorabilia from the South make me feel right at home. On about 5 nights out of the week they have some sort of all-you-can-eat/drink combo that is well worth the money. It gets no better than White Trash Wednesdays! $1 margaritas for the ladies and 25% off all food if you have a Southern ID. The waitresses are usually incredibly attractive. That's quite a plus. If you have a big group, the Trash Can punch is a must.
