Otto's Shrunken Head

★★★★☆
This space, formerly Barmacy, has become an incredible temple of Polynesian kitsch, with matching drinks (especially the Shrunken Skirt). This tiki paradise, featuring live music and exotic decor par excellence, will keep you swinging until the wee morning hours.

If you are a band playing there, watch out for the crazy promoter. He's really mean and he tried to beat up our band.

Killer vibe! Booking lacks something to be desired, but great place for unknown talent to be heard. I would go back!

We were looking for a cool place & a Scorpion Bowl. Although they didn't have the Scorpion Bowl - the Volcano was an excellent substitute! Staff was very friendly - we happend to catch the Ruffian Arms show - AWESOME!! We got wasted, had a blast, met some cool people - couldn't ask for a better time. Reminds me of places that used to be all over the village that no longer exist. Thanks for a great place - we will definitely be back!!

Every city needs a good tiki bar and this is NYC's!!! All the traditional tiki trappings down to the blown up blowfish lanterns. of course you can get volcano bowls and lots of other dangerous concoctions.

First off, I only went to Otto's because my ex-boyfriend's band was playing there, but we ended up getting mistreated by the staff in addition to terrible service. In fact, the bartenders scolded us "for not tipping enough," though we were tipping the standard 20 percent. The girls behind the bar were rude and just plain mean, but not in a cute way, in a mean way. I will never go back.

A few after work Thursdays have left an indellible tiki god scar on my heart and my hands busily filling out applications to become a regular at this above par dive bar. Starting with [SERVICE] Otto's can't disappoint. The bartender working the days I go is a sassy redhead (Mishelle) that's easy on the eyes and quick on the pour. Making sure my bourbon stays full while juggling three or four customers at a time is talent enough to make my heart skip a beat but being silver tongued enough to convince the king of beer and a bourbon to try a drink with fruit juice and a streamered straw has sent shrunken tiki stars glittering out of my eyes. Her I-pod selection doesn't let you down either as her selection of brutally beautiful music eases the harsh transition from daylight hours into the night when dj's take the booth and bands take the back room stage. Which brings me to [MUSIC]. Unpretentious working DJ's are always a joy to encounter and the one's at Otto's earn high marks, entertaining a request if it gels with their set -but I'd recommend trusting their judgment. The band roster is quite wide but mostly local with some really great bands doing tour stops and currently Susquehannah Industrial Tool and Die doing a rockabilly residence. [DECOR/ATMOSPHERE] The interior is dark and distracting enough that I could spend hours alone there without having the lack of some intriguing eye candy to look at. The crowd is diverse and as friendly as your average person out to have a good time can get without seeming like a creepy uncle. Also if you need a distraction I highly recommend big Buck Hunter (who the hell is this CAI guy anyway?). All said and done: I don't know why they call it a suffering b@stard this tiki watering hole leaves me feeling anything but.

My friends suggested that we go to hear live music... when we walk in the band wasn't playing, but Iron Maiden was!!!!! The bartender(Pam the Metal QUEEN)had the best selection of metal on her i-pod! We ordered off the tiki menu and the concoctions were sassy....but even better... were Pam's margaritas, not the fruity kind, but the kind that make you feel like you are in Mexico...wonderful.When the band did finally start to play, we sat in the back room & rocked out, all in all a wonderful night in this east village bar!!

I actually bartend there, and I have to say I could not work with an effen cooler crew of people than Ottos. I showed up at their door after the demise of the Korova Milk Bar that I managed for 6 years and they welcomed me with open arms. It's actually awesome to see people noticing the effort put into the crowd to have a good time there...

It's usually where I go when I'm not even working!

Otto's is a lovely little tiki bar in the East Village where you can go to enjoy the music, whether it be from a dj or a live band in the back, play some games, make a record of your night in the photo booth, or just get completely and ridiculously drunk. The crowd is eclectic, drawing punks, rockabilly guys & gals, and even some "normal" types. The music varies depending on what band is playing or who is spinning, but it's rarely a disappointment. The place is always fun but especially if you are lucky enough to be there when Ms. Meow is tending bar. Be nice and you will find her one of the most charming ladies to ever serve you a drink. Be rude and you will learn very quickly just how much fire resides under that bright red hair. Either way, you get what you deserve, but you'll probably prefer the former. Act accordingly.

Otto's is one of those places you can go to at 4 in the afternoon or 3 in the morning and still run into interesting people, hear good music, and count on getting a good drink. A friendly and unique spot amongst all the boring cookie-cutter bars that have taken over the area. Helps that Mishelle Meow (the hot, fiery red-haired bartender) makes the best margarita ever!!

Otto's is divey. But "divey" really means "real," "unpretentious," and, essentially, pretty kickass. The music is loud, the crowd can vary from friendly and bubbly to blind drunk and crazy, the decor is rock-and-roller (but lacks a boring, commercial sheen). It is a great place for people of all kinds to sit down, hear some swingin' tunes, and get good old-fashioned drunk.

And the cherry on top is one of the finest bartenders around: the beautiful, scorchin' hot, acid-tongued, no b.s., fast-as-lightning Mishelle Meow. If you are polite and friendly to this lady, she will take top notch care of you. She'll mix you a drink, tell you a story, ease your woes, and just plain make you feel loved. But if you are rude to her - look out! She doesn't take any guff. She'll make a fool out of an ill-mannered clod in two seconds flat (which is pretty entertaining to watch).

Basically, Otto's is a no-frills watering hole where you can relax, rock out, and tie one on. What more could you want from a bar, crazy cat?

This place is the best!! Exciting Friday parties. Great Dj's. Lots of bands and awesome drinks. GREAT drinks. The bartenders are characters. They slay me with their hot attitudes and stories. Ms.MEOW is especially awesome. Friendly, always kept my glass full and pours a mean drink. Once i passed by after work for "one" drink and closed the place out. Plus the place has the deer hunting video game. who does like to look at beautiful women, drink, and (fake) shoot things.

I used to live around the corner, before it was Otto's, (it was called barmacy then). I remember how happy I was when a cool spot opened up there. The place is great. I'm not normally a fan of kitschy bars, but Otto's somehow manages to make it cool. The drinks are top-notch, I even was tempted by my bartender to try one of the weird tiki cocktails. Normally, I'm a jack and budweiser kinda guy, but I have to admit it was excellent. I ended up buying the tiki glass it came in (most places have awful tee shirts; how cool is it that I can get a glass?!)

They also have excellent music, dj's, and live bands. Be sure to go when the exquisite Ms. Meow is working. She is the greatest - kept my drink filled all night, was witty, charming, se xy, and sh even introduced me to some single ladies who were there. What more could anyone ask for in a bartender?!

I just had the best birthday party ever! The owners--Steve and Nell--were super-helpful in planning my big day. They even gave me a bottle of champagne. The bartenders were friendly and made beautiful drinks with fancy straws and umbrellas all night! The DJ was totally accommodating to my silly song requests (rock and roll and even some exotica!) and I was able to have my friend's band play. I would highly recommend having your birthday, going-away, engagement, whatever milestone you're marking here! The atmosphere is so cool-no decorations needed! Already thinking about next year's party and I'm sure it will be at Otto's Shrunken Head again!!

Every time I visit this East Village spot I am intrigued by the diversity of regulars that hang out there. Every night is different--beautiful rockabilly gals, hot rock and roll guys, silly Hawaiian-shirt wearing guys, and stylish mods. And of course the everyday average Joe seems just as comfortable hanging out. Great for people watching and making new friends. Friendly bartenders. Great live music and Djs! Definitely worth checking out.

The best thing about Otto's besides the cold beer, sweet drinks and awesome bartenders, is the fact that it's one of the last cool places to hang out in the East Village or all of NYC for that matter. Low NYU vibe for the most part, plus kick butt rock and roll bands! Check it out!

Otto's is one of my favorite bars in the city. Tiki camp, it's got a back room with live music. A punkrock clientele. A weird assortment of other folks, and a very low key... dare I say alternative... feel. With Father Vincent at the door, you know Otto's is not your usual yuppie bar.
No food served there, but you can bring your own... either from the pizza place down the block or the Mexican grocery store around the corner. --Drink Club NYC is a roving group of NYC drinkers

The last of a dying breed of great rock bars with a take no $&*t bartenders that serve up mean drinks with meaner attitudes. This manhattan refuge has great nights featuring rockabilly, surf, death rock and garage music. Drinks are reasonable and crowd is cool but not too cool for school. Tiki vibe is great for parties and I was there for a birthday party where big flaming drinks knocked me on my butt!

Overall this is a good spot. I only con I had about the place is the red-headed bartender. She is snobby and rude and carded me twice even though she gave me my first drink! I would recommend that if she is there, go somewhere else. Other than that, the drinks are creative and the place is a nice unknown spot in ABC city.

The staff here is like family! I have never seen any staff, any given night I went to any bar, EVER get along like these guys!!! Everyone that works there is super nice. And most are from the neighborhood. All of them are great people. The drinks are pretty cheap, unless they are the insane TIKI DRINKS and frozen stuff, those get a bit pricey but, taste awesome. There is a guy that works behind the bar on Fridays, I think his name is Johnny, gorgeous, funny, and such a great guy. You should definitely check him... I mean Otto's out! The third Friday of every month is REBEL NIGHT. Its an awesome Rock-a-billy party with these Japanese promoters that DJ all night and even give dance lessons sometimes!!!
Not to mention the beautiful Betty lookin' girls with tattoos...
All in all, an amazing time that the hipsters and frat boys have not found yet so, its worth the trip!

My friends and I stopped in for our first beer at this joint as a kickoff to the night. First of all, the bartender was SO WASTED that she could barely talk. After slurring back our order to us, she pours the wrong drinks. After we clarify what we want....again.... she ID's us and we sit down. After I'm done I go to get another beer and she ID's me again.....then tells me im underage!!! and throws the ID in my face!! (Sidenote: im 23!). After telling her im OF AGE she starts screaming profanities at me and tells me to get the F*** out of her bar. There was no manager and no other bartenders. What I shouldve done was call the police!!!! This place is ATROCIOUS and the most unprofessional dump Ive ever been too. AVOID THIS SH*THOLE AT ALL COSTS!!!!

I love this place, the atmosphere is so kitchy...and everyone is totally chill. I like to go on Monday Tiki Nights- i saw a great band called Mattison there. They are so smooth live and the girl (I think her name is Kate) who sings/plays piano is so hotttt!!!! I checked and they now play the last monday of every month. They have a jazzy lounge vibe that is great to get wasted to! Otto's is definitely my favorite place to drink and watch great bands!

Great music, great drinks, and thankfully the meat heads and yuppie-hipsters that troll the East Village on weekends are too scared to venture in. My only complaints are that Otto's needs to be bigger to fit the awesome crowd, and there isn't an Otto's in Brooklyn...

You should check out this bar not only because its cute and very new york, but also because they have some great Hawaiian music. Thurs the Moonlighters have a steady gig and they are great music, soft enough that you can still have a conversation and very well done!

i spend practically all my drunken weekends at otto's and think its one of the coolest bars on the lower eastside. everyone who works there is extremly friendly and the tiki drinks are always made with a heavy hand. long live the tiki lounge.

Pros: trendy, good music

Cons: smoky

.

My first time here since it changed from Barmacy - if you can get past the silly smoking Tiki head in the window and the way too serious guy at the door, this is a fun place to hang and have some drinks with friends. The music greatly depends on the DJ but the bartenders are good and the crowd is fun.
