If you're of African American decent, you are not welcome! My friend and I entered the restaurant at about 7:40p on Saturday, March 26, 2011 and was immediately greeted by the Japanese hostess who said there wouldnt be any available seats

Yakiniku West is hands down my favorite place to go and eat in NYC.
I have to start with the waiters & staff. They are professional, quick, & friendly. However, they go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need and as a regular I feel like I am treated like royalty and welcomed everytime I show up. I usually end up taking Sake Bombs with a few of them.
The food is awesome. You can order a series of small plates (I recommend all the kobes, the skirt steak, and the SHORT RIBS) and you cook them on your own center grill. I have started getting the sushi as well and it's always high quality and worth adding to the meal.
The cost is always less than I expect and I always order in excess.
This place is awesome to take a date, a fun place to celebrate a birthday, and I've gone alone plenty of times (not like a creep though).
I would suggest calling ahead or making a reservation as this place is always full and you'll have to wait.

Pros: Cooking, Food, Experience, Staff, Everything, Prices

Cons: None, This place is my favorite and perfect

Amazing staff who is kind, catering and always professional. We've been eating there for over 10 years. We have big parties there or just go for a romantic dinner. They have NEVER disappointed us with fresh food and a wonderful experience. Make sure to book your reservation early or be prepared to find another place to eat. They get slammed! All this and the best prices in town!! We recently moved to the Upper West Side and haven't found anything as good. Enjoy!!

I have been a loyal customer to this seemingly wonderful restaurant for a great while. A couple of good friends and myself decided to venture into the east village to enjoy one of our favorite Japanese restaurants. Immediately after being seated our waitress' (Y*KA) attitude was extremely disconnected. We had to remind her to take our drink, appetizer, and food orders. The food was WONDERFUL (as usual), as such we didn't pay much attention to Y*ka's attitude. We chalked it up to "NYC" style. My group separated the check. And I paid the check with my debit card and left the tip in cash. After going to put our shoes on. Y*ka stormed downstairs and had the audacity to DEMAND a bigger tip. I told my friends to leave the restaurant while I spoke to Y*ka. I reminded her that a tip is EARNED, not a hand out. She repeatedly told me how incorrect I was then went outside and demanded more money from my friends. Please keep in mind the tip I left was 5 dollars on a $22.00, which was MORE than enough. I was mainly concerned about Y*ka having my credit card number. After speaking to the manager I realized that the "customer is not always right," or appreciated. The food and atmosphere was spectacular, the staff was BELOW AVERAGE.

Pros: Food, Atmosphere, music

Cons: STAFF, STAFF, STAFF. Did I mention the staff?

We came here for dinner. We were late for our reserved time, and they gave away our reservation. However, the host was very nice and after about a 15 minute wait we were seated. Before reviewing the place, I thought it appropriate to mention that the description of Yakiniku West as "Korean barbeque" is somewhat inaccurate. This is a Japanese restaurant serving Korean-style food, which has become quite popular in Japan. So even though this is a Korean-style cuisine, Yakiniku West is an authentic Japanese restaurant. Indeed, the atmosphere is very authentic. The restaurant is airy and spacious. The service is seamless. The food has its ups and downs. The beef is of very good quality and there is quite a selection, including high end Kobe beef and the American variety thereof. The other selections, however, leave a bit to be desired. The rice bowls are unimpressive, and there isn't much to speak of by way of appetizers or side dishes. Overall, I enjoyed the dinner and would consider coming back, but I prefer the nearby located Shabu-Tatsu. The beef there may not be quite as good, but overall, the dining experience is better.

This place is absolutely wonderful. The staff is really nice from the moment you step in.
I go there almost every week for their special monday half price bbq.
The potato salad and the salmon tsutsumi are my favorite!
The best part is to cook your own food.
Don't forget to make a reservation otherwise you can get stuck waiting for almost an hour on mondays and weekends.

This place is great to go in a big group of friends. It's Japanese and Korean. Bibim bap is great, so is the Korean BBQ.

I have been coming to this place for 6 years. The staff is friendly and the food is great and inexpensive. I always order (and split with someone) the A & B which is the chicken and short rib steak meals. It comes with salad, soup, dipping sauces, rice and ice cream at the end. The sushi is pretty descent as well. This place is so much fun. You walk in and take off your shoes and sit on pillows on the floor and cook the meat on a little grill on the table. It's a great place for a date or for fun with friends.

If you come here, do not get the $10 special [korean bbq and bibimbop] served between 5pm and 6:30pm. I walked away with stomach cramps that didn't go away all night. Most likely bad meat used for the bbq. I definitely made sure that i cooked it fully. Although I have friends who like this place, I am not likely to come back to try out the rest of the menu.

Out of the east chains I would say this is the closest to authentic Japanese food. The tables are really cute and done in true Japanese style where you have to take off your shoes and sit on low tables. There are hibatchi grills in case you are in the mood for skewering and beer comes at a value in pitchers. Overall a great place to eat at.

Yakiniku West was the very first place I ever had sushi almost 10 years ago, and I haven't found a comparable alternative since. Prices are extremely reasonable for the selection, quality, and variety. I have had nothing but excellent service - always friendly and attentive while not being pushy. This is a city of endless dining options, but Yakiniku West will always be my first and favorite choice. Before finally making my move to NYC, this was the one given stop on any and all of my visits.

Pros: Reasonable prices, Good selection, Comfortable

Cons: Limited seating, Not open late

Yakiniku West, with their sumptuous barbecue steak that is so finely sliced that it cooks to perfection in
under a minute per slice, we can't have chosen a better spot. Their bibim bap is so exquisite, we were left craving for more even after we were sitting there like stuffed turkeys. Not to mention Yakiniku West's
authentic beer that goes along with all this food to enhance the overall culinary experience. Be prepared for an awakening of your senses, from delightful aromas to the stimulation of your taste buds. You'll be in for a royal treat.

The downside? There's always a flip side to the story... They don't take reservations on weekends. So you'll have to wait in line for a little while. But trust me, it'll be worth the wait.

What a totally unique experience this place is. You sit down in this benches hollowed out of the floor, sunken, and upon entry you remove your shoes and wear neat slippers. So you're in a different mood immediately.

And I guess things changed since a review below from March, as they actually required reservations when I called recently just for a group of 4, tho they reassured me Mondays aren't overly busy.

This is the perfect place to go to with a group. It's a great social environment that's reasonably priced and caters to larger parties. The fact that you can grill your own meat is also very appealing, as many people can be very picky with how their food is cooked. Best of all, the prices are great. So far I've taken 2 people here for their birthday dinners and they've each enjoyed it tremendously. My 2 biggest problems with Yakiniku West are the Loooooong waits on Thurs-Fri-Sat nights and that they don't take reservations, even for large parties. But that's not enough to keep me away. In fact, I'm going there tonight.

This place is getting worse and worse. The service, (the waitstaff and lady manager) is so bad that I no longer visit here. The quality of the beef is very dissapointing too. It's not even worth to pay $10. If you are looking for a value BBQ, go to YAKINIKU JUJU where serves ALL YOU CAN EAT for $20. Better food and better service.

I enjoy Yakiniku West for two reasons: It offers traditional Japanese seating and settings; and the food is very reasonably priced. Yakiniku West is a rare Japanese restaurant for not being about sushi (and I hate ALL seafood). Although I wouldn't recommend getting the restaurant's cheapest dinner special: It's obvious the meat used for the "under $10" meal isn't the same quality as that used when you buy the dinner special that's just an extra $2 more. But each time I've gone, I've been very happy with the service, with the meals, and the fact that they allow you to take your time to eat and enjoy your friends (several of whom I've taken; only two didn't like it). It's a great place when you like different types of food but don't have the budget to afford the Japanese restaurant in the Waldorf-Astoria.

Yakiniku West should be ashamed of itself. They have not only sacrificed the quality of their product but have offended good customers with an inept manager. They have offered "dinner special" for some time and I have found very reasonable. Last wk, we were shocked when the waiter brought the beef. We noticed the difference immediately-there was no beef but ALL FAT. We attempted to grill the beef which was absolutely inedible. We called the manager, but we were informed that they changed the quality of the beef because they wanted to save $. She offered no apology and no consideration to upgrade the meal. She walked away & disappeared. I can't express the anger & indignation we felt at her behavior and strongly suggest that YAKINIKU WEST be avoided. Shame on them for serving garbage. Shame on manager for acknowledging she was serving crap and doing nothing about it.

This place has been a favorite among my circle of friends for years -- for $12, you can get a full meal with soup, salad, a large plate of meat and ice cream. With its expansive menu, you can also get sushi and any number of appetizers (including takoyaki -- the octopus balls that are popular in the little place down the street); and no other place is better to sit back with friends over beer and a good meal. The place is spacious and pleasantly spare in decor. Three drawbacks: a notoriously crusty waitstaff, difficulty getting a table because it is often so busy and because of the way the tables are laid out, difficulty seating groups over six (although, the converse is that groups of four to six are easier to seat here than most other places).
