I am completely satisfied with my haircut from Hiromi a few months ago and would return, which is saying a lot because I like to try different places because I am always wondering whether I can be getting a better cut somewhere else. It is growing out very nicely. My stylist spent an hour layering, shaping and cutting my long, generally straight hair. So, while this is not a "bargain" cut (upper $70's or $80 incl tip), they really spend a lot of time getting right and if you look at it that way, by the minute, it is on the cheap side. The only downside is that it is way east on 13th which is not close to anything for me.

Pros: precision cut

Cons: a bit pricey

i will say that kaori was on time, listened, discussed what i wanted, and seemed to have a grasp of how to fix the problems i was facing; uneven bangs that were too wide, and hair hanging straight down with a lot of layering at only the ends. she then proceeded to wash my hair soaking my back in the process, sat me back down in her chair, and didn't stop cutting until i literally got up out of the salon with towel and cape still on, grapped my things, and fled out the door. i left with bangs that are straight across my head making me look as if i have a unibrow, but textured just enough so that they poof up at the sides, half of a face frame which she refused to change, and again lots of heaviness at the bottom with tons of layers that are three inches shorter than before except for the last layer which hangs explicably about two inches longer so it doesn't blend at all with any of the hair above or around it.. all that for $65.00, a true bargain in nyc. hair kuwayama, you should be proud!

Pros: on time, very polite, hair seems to be even

Cons: sloppy shampooing, unintegrated layers, no understanding of hair style as opposed to hair cut

I was going to London and wanted to look fab! My normal gal wasn't available so I went to Hair Kuwayama as it was local and looked good. Big mistake. I had Nari cut my hair and I think it was the worst technical haircut I have ever had in my life. It was very short and had absolutely no shape - I felt a little like a choir boy *sob*

I had to spend 5 weeks curling my super short hair every day just so it didnt look so terrible, and then I went back to my own hairstylist who just looked at it and was confused. "You look a bit like a choir boy" she said, which by that point I was able to laugh about it. It had been thinned in all of the wrong places and far far too much.. luckily my hair is a short little bob as it will only take a few months to grow back, but i'm still not happy with how it looks because its been thinned so much!

My roommate also made the same mistake at Hair Kuwayama, also with Nari! When I showed her my cut and we realized it was the same person I had to write on here. I cant comment for the rest of the stylists obviously but I had a terrible experience and will be sticking with my own stylist from now on!

Pros: Nice salon, local

Cons: Terrible haircut, way overpriced for the skill level

i've been at this salon for more than 5 years. eri cuts my hair and has always done a great job in listening and styling. when i ask for specific advice she gives it. i do know that with her, it seems to be a salon where if you know what you want, they can provide- but you must be able to articulate that. i have yet to know how the new space will take shape in what it provides; but as far as a haircut- they've done a great job... only once was i unsatisfied but that was because i wasn't sure what i wanted, so i returned the next day and they altered my hair. i offered to pay, and they didn't take the money. very cool. people speaking other languages around me does not bother me, I'm from NY and am used to it... they are not trying to be rude. after all they will speak to you in english and are very kind.

I have crazy curly hair and I do not trust anyone with my very special hair, But Kaori at person has totally changed that. It was my first time. I am really loving my hair. She has such great sense with color and shape and I feel like it is me. HAIR KUWAYAMA is Fantastic!!

I went to the appointment at the time I had scheduled that morning. The person at the desk told me that I had cancelled my appointment. I responded that it must be an error--I definitely didn't cancel. She said "no, we made sure it was you." I asked "how?" and then said, "let's look at the caller Id." She said, we have no caller id, but we made sure. Then she spoke in maybe japanese to another woman and they both responded that they could not give me the appointment because I cancelled. They made sure. There was no apology. I walked out that and that was it.

Pros: who knows

Cons: awful customer service

.

This place is wonderful. I have gotten cuts from a number of the staff and every time, it turns out fabulous. As in people going out of their way to compliment me on my hair. The stylists spend a lot of time to do the cut, much more than would be expected for the price point ($45-60). They seem to have a particular specialty in straight hair, Asian hair and men's hair, but I've seen them do all kinds really well. The new location is very cool. People criticizing that the staff is "cold" I just don't get, unless those people are looking for Dolly Parton in Steel Magnolias. Me, I just want a stylish haircut at a reasonable price in a nice atmosphere. And that's what I get at Kuwayama!
(I swear I am not related to anyone there!)

Pros: Skilled stylists, Reasonable prices

.

I went to this salon based upon a recommendation from a friend. I didn't like the atmosphere because the stylists were talking very loudly in a foreign language. Eri was my stylist. She was confrontative and did not cut my hair the way I asked. I found this salon to be cold and unfriendly.

I have been going to this place over 3 years now. It was one of my favorite places in the city, until my recent visit. It's good that they moved to nicer place and everything, but they changed the whole staff, and let me tell you, they need to get their people back who worked there before. The person that I always get my haircut from was not there anymore so they introduced me to a new person. But, trust me, this is, by far, the worst haircut I could've gotten anywhere in the world. She showed me all these nice pictures of models and explained how she's going to cut my hair, but this **** is nothing like what i was expecting. There's no doubt that I'm never going back to this place again.

I have been coming here for over 4 years. The new space has great energy & great light. I had a new cut and everywhere i go people stop me to ask me where I get it cut. I reccomend Sieko--especially if you like real down to earth hair stylists who are cool and conversational!

So, I used to frequent this salon when I lived across the street, (1994-2000) back when the East Village was a village and not the commerical mecca that we see today. The owner of the salon, Ari, gave amazing hair cuts, and took into consideration what style I was trying to convey - I got exactly what I described to her.
On a recent business trip to NY, I was happy to be able to get an appointment the very night that I flew in.
I arrived for my 7pm haircut to a brand new salon located on 13th street. They had relocated and gotten bigger and "better". I had a photo with me of my hair style from the sumer 2006, and wanted to reshape my current hair to match that. I was very happy to see my old stylilst and become reaquainted. Untill I looked in the mirror 1/2 way through my cut. She was incapable of performing the request. My hair cut looked nothing like the photo I brought in, and looked exactly like the haircut she used to give me 7 years ago.
BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. She performed a haircut without listening to me, or examining the photo for direction. The haircut I walked out with could not have been further from what I requested. Furthermore, it was not even a cut that is popular today, or cool, or New Yorky. It sucked. $80 later. She gave an un-inspired lazy ugly haircut to me. Working off what she 'remembered' I used to like my hair to be like.
I suggest avoiding this place all together. It seems what used to be one of the good places with integrity and creativity and talent, has fallen into the vat of bigger, better, more expensive for an outcome that is quite simply a waste of time. I would have been better off anywhere else.

Cons: You will not get the haircut that you ask for. BIG CON.

i don't get the hype about this place at all! though there was plenty i liked about it- unpretentious staff, no pushing products on you- it just wasn't worth the price i paid for it. even though i gave them an idea of what i was looking for, i feel like they tend to go towards a certain style (which I can only describe as "the asian bob") because it seemed like almost everyone else in there was getting the same style. overall, the experience and cut were fine but i've had better cuts for a more reasonable price so i won't be returning.

by the way, i was surprised at the price of my cut ($85), seeing as the reviews on here mention $55- but on closer look you'll see the reviews go back to 2002.

I love this place. I've been coming here for years after a recomendation from a friend. Now at least 4 of my friends get regular haircuts here too. They just moved so note the new location on 13th between 1st and A. It's a lot bigger now and they have more services also.

I went here because I read good things about it here on citisearch. It was great, the girl that cut my hair (her name escapes me) was really talented and turned my f-ed up hair into a fashionable easy to do due. $55 so cheap for the city! She was nice and not annoying. Very happy!

I decided to try this place after reading all of the positive reviews on city search. I LOVE this place! The stylist is very polite, she spends time telling me what she is doing with my hair. She gave my straight hair volume! Definitely know what she is doing. The price is right and it is easy to make an appointment. Highly recommended!

At Hair Kuwayama you always get great work for a great price. My color is fantastic and durable. My hair style looks better then I imagined and grows out gracefully. Chinami is a great stylist with a very likeable personality. She really takes her time with her clients, no rushing you through like livestock! When she's done, I feel like I have been sculpted. Whether conservative or funky or just plain out there, this is the salon for you.

Seiko is a great stylist and is a very interesting person so we have good conversations while she cuts my hair instead of the usual boring conversations about weather and work that I get from others. I always feel refreshed after she cuts my hair.

Hair Kuwayama is the best place I've ever found for haircuts. For years I'd been trying one place after the next from low budget to $100+ stylists and never found the skill and comfort that I have at Kuwayama. My stylist for the past 6 months has just left for Japan and though I've never had anyone else cut my hair there, I'd rather try someone new then leave the salon all together. Everyone is so friendly and accomadating and I could never ask for more.

Hiromi at Hair Kuwayama is the best. She really knows how to give a great haircut. She is trendy, young and skilled at her work. She takes her time cutting each piece of hair to perfection. I never feel rushed one bit. I recommend hair kuwayama to anyone who wants a stylish haircut for a great price. ($55) I don't know what the person who said that the receptionist ran after them and humiliated them in the street about how much tip they left. They must have just been really cheap. The girls at Hair Kuwayama are too cool to take being jipped lying down!

i have searched for years for someone to cut my hair the way I like it and i have finally found it!! Their cuts are truly artisitc and very inexpensive. I am never going back to this hole-in-the-wall again! Sure the stylists know what they are doing and I had a pleasant time while getting my hair done. However, after I paid and was out the door, the receptionist actually came chasing after me to tell me outside (mind you, in the middle of a populated street) that the tip I gave to my stylist was measley. She told me to shell out the dough and embarrased me in front of a my spouse. What a way to ruin a day at the salon.

Eri Kuwayama has genuine skill and a natural grasp of beauty and aesthetics. I was very happy that ELLE did a small article about her some years ago. I have straight Asian hair and my husband has tight curly hair that nobody can cut beautifully except her. Her prices are still so reasonable ($45) and the stalon is hip and understated. There is absolutely no BS. Usually stellar hair salons have that viva glam, ripoff, crap assistants, snootyness. Not Eri's place. I discovered this place just by walking past and being instantly drawn to the spare, minimalist atmosphere. I never went anywhere else for years until I moved out of New York. Now, no other city I've lived in has offered the same. I really really miss you Eri! Plus I love that automatic chair that tilts back in the hairwashing sink. Nobody else has that!

This place is wonderful! The staff is very polite and nice, and they did a great job on my hair. And it was only $50 for a shampoo, cut and blowdry. They are also very accomodating...even though I arrived practically 20 minutes late, they still fit me in without any hassle.

I had thought that my stick-straight hair doomed me to never having an interesting or stylish haircut, but Shin gave me the best cut I've ever had. (I wish I'd found him back when I had short hair and kept getting one expensive, mediocre haircut after another.) For the first time in my life, I understand what it's like to have a great hairstylist. I'd recommend him to anyone.

With three chairs in a bare room, the salon doesn't look like much. But the women who cut and color hair here are super friendly and sweet, and I've never had to wait long for an appointment. Seiko cuts my hair with extraordinary care, unlike some high-priced stylists I've overpaid to hack away blindly at my head and leave me with an uneven, butchered mess to gel into shape. The style grows out marvelously. When (out of habit) I came in for a trim a month after my first cut, Seiko said, "I'll cut it very short so you don't have to come in so much, save money, OK?" The cut she gave me was gorgeous. I didn't have to come in for three months, and then just because I felt like keeping it short.

Pros: friendly stylists, great cuts , prompt service

Cons: no luxuries, Seiko is on vacation!

i've been going to hair kuwayama for almost 3 years now and it is wonderful! i went on the recommendation of a good friend, who always had kickass hair, and she directed me to chinami - now i am a loyal fan. the atmosphere is cozy and comfortable - there are only 3 seats so it feels like you're at a friend's place. while the stylists' english may not be the best, they still always know exactly what you want. =)

I should start off by saying that I have very straight hair, which is why I've always felt safe in the hands of capable Asian stylists. I made my appointment the day before, and there were plenty of time slots available. At the time of the appointment, Chinami took me almost immediately after I walked in. I brought a picture, but she also had a binder with pictures full of suggestions for my haircut. She was able to cut my hair exactly like the picture which 3 stylists had failed to replicate before her. For $50 ($45 every time after that), I got more than I paid for, and I'm never going any place else!!

this is a wonderful salon. just a few chairs make for a cozy ambience. seiko is a stylist with a feather touch. she is just great at what she does. this salon is affordably priced, and yet i did not compromise my cut. this place is bound to become a keeper for all who experience it once. don't think about it... make an apoointment and go!

Wandering around trying to find a place that would cut my hair, in desperation I stopped in here because although it looked great, it seemed far too packed to fit me in. I was mistaken. They not only fit me in, but cut my hair exactly to spec (which was that I gave vague directions for a mood and trusted them and their abilities). I walked out with my hair exactly as I wanted it, and for a fraction of the price of other places in town. Top notch.
