it is rare that i actually remember to write a good review, but i thought this place deserves it after a very pleasant night out. i've been to plenty of sushi places and can tell what's fresh or not because my father is in the business, and despite it's small space, the sushi was very fresh, clean, tasty and unpretentious. staff were very friendly and a bonus for me was the unlimited free green tea they served (i'm used to getting charged for it in the city especially). portions are huge, not in terms of how many pieces you get in a roll (the standard is 6 for regular rolls and about 8 for the special ones) - but huge as in each piece had a lot in it. my friends and i ordered quite a few rolls, and i also ordered the tempura soba noodles - and let me say, the portion for that was enough for 2 people. tempura came separately (usually they dunk it in the soup) and came with a variety of vegetable tempura as well as the usual 2 pieces of shrimp tempura). it's a great value for what they serve. i will definetly go back.

one note: when they say "spicy" roll, it really isn't spicy. compared to other places, it really isn't spicy at all so if that's what you're looking for, then you might want to ask for more spicy sauce.

another note: bathroom is very clean and modern. you know a bathroom says a lot about a restaurant! in terms of cleanliness especially...

i would recommend this restaurant to people who are foodies, looking for good portions, like quality food without paying a high price for it.

Pros: service, price, extensive, creative maki roll selections,

Cons: small space

Okay, so this is one of the best sushi menus I have seen yet in the city. Two strong recommendations: the roll with banana and the BBQ calamari. We landed at Yoshi on a Thursday with two friends visiting around 7:30 and lucked into the private back room. Service staff was very efficient and pleasant. Another pro: Kirin 12oz bottles are only $2.50 with the big boys at $4.50. Summary: four of us ate ourselves full with drinks for less than $80. Grab some drinks at Drop Off Services and then head down Ave A to Yoshi for a cheap date.

Cons: Front section of restaurant

When I first saw that this restaurant had opened in my neighborhood I thought "Oh no.. not another sushi place, how about something more original..." but, I decided to pop in and check it out, as I was tired of the abrupt manner of the nearby Sushi Lounge staff.

I have to admit, the food is super fresh! and the prices are cheap, cheap, cheap... Great value, great friendly service, have been back several times since.

The restaurant has a lovely authentic (low seating) private room at the back, perfect for get togethers, or birthday dinners - there is also a private room that (I believe) seats 12 - which is also very nicely set-up.

The main dining area is compact but exceptionally clean and tidy. This is my new sushi favorite in the 'hood - the delivery is super speedy too!

Give it a try!!

There are very few places like this...with such great service and ALWAYS the freshest fish. Good prices for such quality food and the specials are fantastic, too. Can't wait to come back and use one of the 2 private rooms. Truly one of our favorite places to have a night out!

I got takeout from this place for lunch today. The service is fast, but most important, the food is really good and cost only 5 bucks.I definitely go back again for Pad Thai and lychee drinks. The girl behind the counter
is friendly , offered me a fresh coconut smoothies. Yum!! Thank you so much.

Have eaten here several times. It becomes more disappointing and disgusting with each visit!! The staff always seems annoyed. Annoyed that we do not order more quickly. Annoyed that we would like the drink chilled and not warm. Annoyed that we would like the food served hot and not brought to us tepid. Moreover, the service is extremely unacceptable, the owner(i guess) in particular. Oh!... MY GOD!!..This is just a CRAZY! Place that i've never ever experience such... She does very little to disguise the fact that she want to flip tables quickly. One course is dumped on the table before the previous one is completed. To make it worse!!, I found a disgusting thing in FOOD!!..It used to be a treat. It has become a trial. You could do better for the price!!

I first went to Kai Kai sometime last fall. There was a comfy dining room, the service was nice and the food was great. I went back tonight (it's May now), and my second visit was the exact opposite of the first.
The comfy dining room is gone, the space replaced by a shop selling pastries for dogs. What's left of Kai Kai is a takeout counter and two tiny tables. My date ordered a bubble tea and the pad see ew with vegetables and no eggs (she's vegan); I ordered spring rolls and the pad kee mow. The pad see ew came with eggs, so she sent it back and the replacement dish consisted of undercooked vegetables, a few noodles, and not enough brown sauce to give the dish any flavor. She wanted to send it back again, but I asked her not to because the third dish would have been spat into. My pad kee mow was so inedibly spicy (yet flavorless) I had it wrapped up to save for later, when it will hopefully mellow. The spring rolls didn't show up until after the entrees, and it took four napkins to sop up the grease before they could be eaten. The bubble tea never came but was on the bill anyway, so we pointed it out and had a new bill made so we could leave as quickly as possible.
There are so many good Thai places in the city there's no excuse for such a bad dining experience. They must have had a much better kitchen and wait staff the first time I went. Kai Kai today is bad in both food and service. Zero stars.

The pad thai is delicious, but it seems to be the only delicious thing on the menu. Friends I've dined with have tried different meals and don't have much to rave about. The drinks are ok and consist of many flavors, including lychee iced tea, but probably not worth the $2.50 since its just water mixed with sweet lychee powder. The vegetable pad thai keeps me coming back though. Good service and the decor is also very cool, and cozy, even though you have to be careful when walking around the small unsturdy wooden tables. I would recommend you stop by if you are in the area and check it out for yourself, especially if you are a vegetarian. CASH ONLY! PS - the coconut vanilla ice cream is delicious - $2 for 2 scoops. YUM.

This is a travesty to Thai cuisine. I don't care how cheap it is; it's really god awful food. I've lived in Thailand. Any self-respecting Thai person would disown this!

This is probably the cheapest Thai food that I've had in the city. You cannot get great-tasting Thai food at this price anywhere else. The restaurant is really tiny, however, it is a great place for a date or intimate dinner.

Kai Kai was recommended to me by a friend and I was not dissappointed. Everything I tried was fresh and tasty. Most of their seating is for couples, so it is a great place to take a date before heading off to see a show.

Pros: Affordable, Delivery, Great Thai

Cons: , Cash only

my "vegetable" pad Thai came with two vegetables: soy bean sprouts and a few pieces of scallion. the noodles weren't even well-seasoned. Kai Kai's other dishes may be better than their pad Thai, but I can't say that I'll rush back to find out.

tiny place with only 3 tables and no restroom, but the lady working there said the guys next door at Grey Dog's would let us use theirs. Chicken Pad Thai is a must try...and pay the 50 cents for extra peanut sauce!

Discovered this little Thai Bistro late one Friday nite. It's not the best Thai food I've ever had, but great if you are looking for a cheap & cheerful bite in the area. The place is small (10 tables), atmosphere is warm & cozy, service is friendly and food is good value for money.

Cannot believe the 10 ratings above. Ordered take out from Kai Kai last night and can confidently say it was my worst dining experience in NY to date. They said food would be with us in 15 mins.... four times. When it finally arrived over an hour later the green curry was stringy chicken with actually NO sauce at all (made the rice a bit redundant without sauce to absorb) and the beef was tough, dry and totally lacking the promised chilli & basil topping. Rude on the phone & clearly hopeless in kitchen. It's hard to ruin a green curry... not, it seems, for Kai Kai.
