Solas

★★★★☆
Pubby yet loungey--not an identity crisis, but a bar with two sides, both nice.

Bartender refused service because he said I didn't tip him last time. Normally, I would sympathize even though bartenders should by rule never serve based on tips (I've worked many years as a manager of a lounge in nyc), but the fact that I was ordering my first round of drinks so obviously he was rudely mistaken. Never go here- weak drinks, overpriced, rude and lame crowd.

Solas has become a popular venue for birthday parties among my friends. There is a dance floor in another separate room and there are two floors on the other side where they play different music and offer a quieter lounging area. \n\nI like it because you can choose to be dancing on the floor or chill on the couch sipping cocktail with friends.

Solas is our go-to spot in the East Village no matter the group we are with, time of night or level of intoxication. The place is completely unpretentious and has an overall good vibe. The front room offers a bar with board games, a floor above is a comfy lounge and the side room is a spacious dance floor complete with another bar and DJ.\n\nThough there are doormen of sorts, there really is no dress code here. Most of the crowd is trendy-casual but there are sneakers and prom dresses alike. My favorite part of the dance floor are the tables/booths (no, you don't need to buy a $400 bottle to reserve) to hang out, rest your feet, and watch crazy dancers. The crowd is mixed as well, though it usually leans toward the young professional 20s-30s group.\n\nGenerally a crowd pleaser and great last-minute spot when it's 3 am and you just have to get that last bar in!

One of those reviews you don't really want to write because you don't want a different crowd showing up at a place you really liked. I brought a group of about 10 people here last Saturday and had an awesome time. I had called well in advance and the manager was cool and reserved a table for us. Everyone was very comfortable -- the music was good, the bartenders were busy but very nice and worked FAST. Despite a full house we never waited more than a couple of minutes to get drinks... much better than most places. There was plenty of room to dance and to hang out: full, but definitely not elbow to elbow. We liked that there are other rooms but stayed nearby our table; we'll have to come back a different night to explore further. Overall it was a fun vibe -- not chaotic and not uptight. \n\nEveryone had a great time and we closed the place. The only complaint we had was that sometimes they'd play a great song for maybe 45 seconds and then switch. Mostly we liked the music though; not enough to keep it from getting 5 stars.

They pour a good pint here, and the decor and feel is a bit different from a standard Irish pub. Solas sets itself apart. The upstairs space is cozy, with texture and small tables. Downstairs is the full bar. The service is pretty friendly, and the vibe is a bit younger than some other Irish bars in the hood.

I wanted to have a bunch of my friends go out for my birthday, and I know I usually have fun at Solas. I spoke to the managers at Solas, and they really took care of us. They kept our tables like they said they would and they kept coming back to make sure we all had enough drinks. It's great that they have different areas with different stuff going on within the bar. The place started emptying out a little around 2:30, but it was a freezing January Saturday night.

Though it gets crowded on weekends it's a big place and the bartenders are all pretty awesome dudes. Wish there were more ladies working there...saw a gorgeous brunette once when I went in but she either just started or was learning there...and haven't seen her since. too bad...she was nice too!\r\n\r\n They always play great music and will even take a request if you're nice. The only thing that's bad is it gets hard to here when it's very but all in all, a friendly and fun environment.

Celebrated a birthday here in the upstairs lounge. It was spacious and worked out great. The staff were all friendly and helpful. Drinks were reasonably priced. The DJ was spinning some good music - very eclectic - a little bit of everything. \r\n\r\nI would definitely have a party here again or just go to hang out and have a drink while listening to some great music.

We used the private room upstairs - great for a group or a private party. The staff were really helpful and we'd definitely go back. A good experience, overall!

I just had my party here Saturday night and it went off without a hitch. The manager, Kevin, was so nice and helped me thru the whole planning process. When I got there, the staff was very accomodating and they hooked me up with my own section for my guests. The music was bumpin' and everybody had a good time. After previous years of bad bday party experiences, Solas was able to give me a great bday.

I've found this place to be a friendly environment, good service and awesome staff. Especially the nice and handsome bouncer (Julio) at the front, he is so dreamy, I love going just to see him and have pleasant conversations with him. Me and friends are in competiton with him, we make plans every week just to see who can get his number, I dont understand why they have that ugly big nose bouncer (Fouad) working with this fine handsome dominican, I would go any day just to see this one handsome and intriguing bouncer, and I would recommend it to the girls but you will be in competition!

I was with a group of 12 friends last night and they wanted to go to a fun bar. I said, ""let's go to Solas,"" having had a good time there before.\r\n\r\nWell, we turned out to be half of their customers on a Friday night and despite our increasing their business, they were continually rude to us. We wanted to go into the bar, and the doormen kept wanting us to go into the dancing room. It was a totally awkward moment with bouncers shuffling us around at the door. I mean, honestly, let us walk in and buy your alcohol!\r\n\r\nThen, later that night, my friend and I went over to the bar. It had a couple empty glasses sitting out on it so my friend stacks the glasses and moves them to an area that's easier for the bartender to reach. Now, I would consider this a nice thing to do so that the bartender, who was lazily sitting on the counter behind the bar, didn't have to walk around the bar and clear the glasses. But instead, as we lean on the bar, watching our friends dance, the manager walks over and says to him ""Don't touch the glasses. Don't break them."" My friend points the glasses and says, ""They aren't broken. I was just moving them."" The manager again says, ""Just don't touch them."" My friend says, ""Ok man, sorry."" Then the manager says to both of us, ""In fact, don't stand here. Stand somewhere else."" I jump in, having done nothing, and say ""Whoa, what's the problem. He apologized and obviously wasn't trying to do anything wrong. Why can't we stand here?"" The manager just says, ""just go stand someplace else. You're blocking the view."" WHAT VIEW? Of the bar?\r\n\r\nDear Manager,\r\n\r\n- Don't take a nothing situation and turn it into something. Management is not supposed to escalate problems, not to mention CREATE them!\r\n\r\n- I brought a party of 12 people to your bar that had NO business that night. Guess what, in the future, I won't bring them. Keep acting like a moron and people will continue to not return to your bar.\r\n\r\nBetter Bars: Bua, Niagara, Odessa, Asian Pub

My friend and I had our 30th bday party there. We had a blast. They were so accomodating! Melvin and Julio (the bouncers) were great. They were so friendly. I would recommended this place to anyone that wants to have a party/ They reserved a room for us with no charge. I had a blast! Thank you Solas!

I had a wonderful experience at Solas this past weekend; I threw a surprise party in the Red Room at Solas, and everyone had a great time. From the very beginning of my planning processes right up until we all went home, everyone was extremely friendly, helpful, and professional. The Red Room is also a great location - cozy and comfortable, and it's right next to the bar! I want to extend my heartiest thanks to everyone at Solas who helped to make my party special, and I highly recommend Solas to anyone thinking of throwing a party in NYC!

I had my birthday party at Solas last month and I was completely satisfied with their service. Nobody had a problem at the door, the bartenders were friendly and were very generous with the alcohol. The private room on the side where I had my party was very classy, clean, intimate, yet with enough room for dancing. I highly recommend this place.

I went to Solas last weekend to celebrate my birthday with a full range of friends (richer/poorer, uptight/laid back, girls/guys). It seemed like each of them had a good time, as at least one of Solas' four or so rooms had something to offer each person. The drinks were good and moderately priced and the service was fairly quick. The bar was full of people but not overly crowded. As a single guy, i definitely appreciated the plentiful girls (although the ratio isn't like the type of place that lets in only one guy for every 4 girls). I'll definitely go again.

I had my birthday party here this past weekend. It was so crowded that a line was created outside of this small bar, because they literally couldn't fit any more people inside. Despite the crowd, however, the drinks are reasonably priced and Kevin, the manager, is really nice and accomidating. The bartenders are also really nice. I recommend this place to hang out.. just not for a large party (unless you rent the place out!).

WE BOOKED A PARTY FOR A SATURDAY NIGHT HERE. WE CALLED SEVERAL TIMES DURING THE WEEK TO CONFIRM AND MAKE SURE THAT ALL OF OUR FRIENDS WOULD BE ABLE TO GET IN AND NOT HAVE A PROBLEM AT THE DOOR - WE WERE ASSURED THAT THERE WOULD BE NO PROBLEMS. WHEN WE ARRIVED, THERE WERE 2 OTHER PARTIES BOOKED. OUR FRIENDS COULD NOT GET IN BECAUSE APPARENTLY THE DOOR MEN HAVE MISTAKEN THIS LOWER EAST SIDE BAR FOR MARQUEE - YELLING AT PEOPLE THAT THEY WOULD NEVER GET IN - AND THE MANAGER AND OWNER WERE RUDE AND UNHELPFUL. THEY BLATANTLY LIED TO US OVER THE PHONE. THEY ALSO DO NOT BELIEVE IN AIR CONDITIONING.THE SERVICE AND TREATMENT WERE APPALING, AND I WOULD NEVER GO BACK OR RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE.

solas is a great place to chill out with friends, or even to meet new people. the staff is absolutely amable and the service is great. the dj changes up from time to time, but overall the music there is great. ranges from alternative to hip-hop: depends on the night and where you are in the place. the decor's pretty chill, as well. sola's the type of place you know you'll visit again.

Solas is quite simply the best bar in New York. Successfully straddling weeknight coziness and weekend hipness, Solas appeal lies is in its incredibly warm staff and management who bring good vibes, great service, terrific music and, \nfor us ex-pats, a place to visit home when particularly homesick. Although an Irish-owned pub, don't expect shamrocks and shennanigans, just the craic, warmth and excellence that is sadly lacking from most bars here and certainly Solas's counterparts in Dublin. Check out upstairs on Fridays and Saturdays for resident Ipod-jockey Kevin's smooth blend of old and new.

Perfect combination they have working in this Lower East Side bar/lounge. Staff, atmosphere, music, space, blah blah blah. \n\nCome check it out for yourself!! This place is alright. In the summer they open up all the front part of the place which is nice and the downstairs gets jammed at times. If that's the case when you go, head upstairs, usually there is NOBODY up there.....kinda weird it's like people don't know it exists. I've been there a number of times and it's hit or miss in terms of people, women, and good music. Not much in the drinks, stick to booze. Oh yea, there is like one bathroom, but there is one by the kitchen upstairs nobody knows about.....well now you do!

I had my girlfriend's Surprise B'day party in Solas which was off the hook. I would attribute it to the cool staff .... u were awesome Juillete. The staff was quite helpful: they kept the cake in their deep freeze. Everyone is still raving about the place and and the crowd. The drink portions were BIG .... and they were quite reasonable. Though I have one complaint: The Coal Room was madd hot, No A.C in there !! Made us madd thirsty for the alcohol ...

my friend has had her bday party here twice. and they both rocked! I dont know if we were lucky or if some of the other reviewers were unlucky, but we got the private room and it was kept private. the music at first was not all that great, but then picked up after about 10pm or so. i really like the RED private room so much that i am planning on having my bday there. also, you get your own private waitress for the private room. ask for the girl from harrisburgh PA (really cute tiny) she was very friendly and prompt.

I don't know why one of the raters had a problem with the crowd. Perhaps she's the one with a complex. This is not the kind of place where you'll find a certain type of person going. \n\nThe bartenders are very cute & the bar staff is generally friendly. \n\nDavid Holmes DJs there on occasion. Aside from that the music is great. (No they don't only play U2)\n\nThere is a cool red room upstairs. Downstairs you'll find a dimly lit bar area, and a funky new age bar room. \n\nIt's great. Probably the type of place you'd pass a few times before you'd notice it's there. The size is deceiving. It has 2 floors...you wouldn't guess it from outside! It could definitely become one of the more popular places in the East Village to go to.\n\nMy friends and I love it. I would DEFINITELY recommend it.

after a very, very wet weekend its nice to see some bars in the city still have the power to get you out as the weather gets bad. great music, nice crowd and had a laugh with the bar staff. definitely worth a visit, sat in this cool little red, lowly lit room upstairs. check it out

Went on a Thursday and this place was a complete joke. Seemed to be a local bar. Decent music. I suppose you could score here - if there were hot girls. Plus: Sort of hot bartender who has nice lips. She's into karate, so be careful. I guess it could have potential.

I had my 28th birthday party there and got to choose any where in the place that I wanted, and it was excellent. We had our on waitress and were treated well. Sammy, the owner is just the best along with the staff!! Everyone enjoyed it and since then other people are now having parties there. I just would only want to add a small appetizer menu especially coming from work.

Pros: Atmosphere, Management, Easy to find

Cons: No food at all., Drinks are expensive

Been there lotsa times now out of a group of 20 not 1 dislike it, function room to right very slick for an irish bar resembles actually the new age irish bars of Dublin. Cool party nights and great drunken fun at the bar plenty of floors and space to find a spot that suits you! Getting busier by the day will be a very popular spot within a month or two. I'm happy there.

My friends and I went to the newish room at Solas tonight (with its separate entrance just to the right of the main door). We had been there quite a few times recently, but tonight, after our server had brought our second round of drinks, another server, who was shorter with long dark curly hair, came over and demanded we leave our table (hi - how many other empty tables were there?). Apparently, suddenly the bar had been reserved for a private party. Had we known this earlier, and had the server allowed us to finish our drinks at our table, we would have no problem going back. But, now I cannot fathom anybody wanting to subject themselves to such under-hyped, undeserved despicable-ness. This place really sucks, and yet the servers are power hungry losers. No wonder it's almost always empty.

I have been to Solas on 2 occasions, both for parties for different friends. This is a very cute place, that is great for a party, since you can reserve the entire second floor for the party, which is a cute room with bright red walls,
