I've eaten brunch here before and had a great memory of the ambiance, food service, etc and so decided to come for dinner. Everything started out fine we ordered beers and a flatbread appetizer, which was delicious, and put in our dinner order. While we were waiting for our food a COCKROACH the length of a watermelon falls from the ceiling hits me in the head and is crawling down my hair and shoulder all while Im SCREAMING "oh my God! oh my God!!" until my boyfriend hits it off of me into the next table over. Needless to say i was pretty shook up and shocked and told the bartender what happened and within minutes our server and the manager came over to apologize and put us at a table outside as I was still freaking out. Call me a wuss, but this thing was HUGE and crawling ALL over me. We sit outside and continue to wait for our burgers and the manager brings me a free $6 beer and Im thinking...there better be some serious comping on our bill. I've worked in the service industry for 5 years and if anything close to this had ever happened we would have comped the entire bill for the party. So we eat our 14 dollar burgers, which were delicious... and we get our check and guess what???? NOTHING was comped aside from the beer. NOTHING!!! Outrageous! They need to learn a thing or two about customer service. Had they been a little more gracious and at LEAST comped just my dinner I would have been satisfied, would not have written this review, and probably would have returned. It's just unbelievable and infuriating that they think a free beer is compensation for a cockroach falling and crawling on me. I will not be returning.

Pros: good food

Cons: unhappy customer

The wait is insane at this restaurant and of the 10 times I've tried to eat there only twice was I able to stand the wait. Really there's no room inside the restaurant to wait so in the event of rain, sleet, snow, I always bail. That having been said, try Diner during the business week, before 7PM and you'll get a seat.

This is the best burger in Williamsburg hands down. You want to eat this grass-fed burger, you owe it to yourself and your country.

The food is a little too expensive and sometimes the service isn't stupendous, but when I'm thinking of a place to go in Brooklyn and want it to be a nice night out, I always think of this place first. The decor is my kind of thing and I like that it is dark and always lively. The food is usually really good.

I ve been 3 times and never ever will be back again, just a scene, the food is ok, but the wine is totally overprice.

I usually try two times or three times a place before making conclusions, but unfortunately Diner fell down my expectations. The food was good, however service end up making the dining experience poor. Hopefully you may get a different waiter but the black curly hair waiter that served me that night was awful. He was rude, and not polite at all. Hope you guys get better servers...

I had mussels and fries here not too long ago - the mussels were maybe a 3 out of 10 for freshness and preparation, and the fries were cold and soggy. Seriously, it seemed like it was the first time the cook had ever attempted to fry potatoes. Very disappointing. The brunch menu is kind of limited and not terribly brunch-y. It's a cute spot though, and we've had a few good waitresses here.

Pros: good bloody mary

Cons: specials, most of the food, just doesn't seem like a very 'happening' place

.

I've been here several times, and it's hit-or-miss depending on the specials. The steak and fish dishes are fairly good. However, the cuisine gets into trouble when they attempt complex dishes, e.g., pork belly, bizarre soups, cassoulet, etc. They also tend to buy one vegetable for the day and put it into EVERYTHING. Today was zucchini. I love zucchini, but come on. It's summer...

There is a heavy and overly rich aspect to the food. The wine selection is decent, but overpriced, especially for Brooklyn. As for the service, many of the servers are nice, but a lot are uninterested. They like to write the menu on the paper table cloth, but they won't serve you bread or pay much attention, even if you ask for things several times. Today was the day they had no bread, but didn't tell us. It could be the hipster stoicism. All in all, it's a pretty good place, but mostly because there's little competition in the area. Try Dressler down the street for a comparison. Z

We decided on a Brooklyn expedition for my husband's birthday and under a friend's suggestion we headed towards DINER not knowing what to expect. Walking under a gorgoeus full moon, with the magnificient view of the Williamsburg Bridge behind it, suddenly, there it was.
Let me warn you that the little corner structure may set some doubts in your mind, but believe me, ignore themand keep on going. We walked into this funky little space that immediately put us at ease.
Love the male staff's lumber looks and the writing of the specials on the paper tablecloth.
And then of course, the food. The food is absolutely delicious, found the appetizer's a bit small though, but worth every last bite.
The only thing that disappointed me was the flourless chocolate cake.

I invited a friend out for a birthday dinner and he chose Diner. The restaurant itself is pleasantly seedy and the customers were all very friendly, which made waiting for a table a pleasant experience (for once!) The nice couple in line told us to order the cheeseburger and fries, which I did, while Birthday Boy and his lady ordered a special (chicken). We were all disappointed: the burger and chicken were dry??really dry. To the point that one got tired of chewing. To make matters worse, the service was lousy: after living in New York for 15 years, I'm used to harried wait staff and some attitude, but bad food makes one lose patience with a server who cannot keep an order straight and then disappears for thirty minutes?

even for a world traveler, this place is pretty good. i only have ever ordered off the specials menu, and never have been disappointed. Except for the fact that you can't get the same thing the next time you're there. The dishes tend to be more simple, and its crowded most of the time, but i think its worth it. Great for a date or for entertaining out of towners.

I've never had such simple orders be so completley scrwed up! EVERY time we attempt take out, they mess up our orders in ever possible way. Example: Ordered a meduim well burger, no cheese, salad insted of fries. Got: Rare CHEESE burger with fries! THey have not gotten one dish right from any order. WHen you eat in its not much better. THe enitre staff have a huge attitude, mysterious LONG waits when its only about half full. Way overpriced, and the food is so-so. The staff really need to check the "i'm a cool hipster and way better then you" attitude, and learn how to complete a simple order. Stay away.

I mean I guess for East Coast produce and portion and quality it was fair but taking a step back and looking at it from the perspective of a world traveler and food taster this food was WHATEVS

this place has saved me from cooking and i live less then a block away. Bless the hipster/hippies that make my food. the place is never empty unless it's their off time for two hours btw 4-6 pm. brunch is great and dinner is even better. at night the place is packed and the seating in the back is romantic. if you can try to ask for the corner booth in the back seating which has the most room. by 10 pm the place is packed both inside and out, and the scene is non stop from your hipster to yuppies.

We ordered off the specials menu; both of our entrees were super good--inspired, hearty and uniquely tasty. The space was absolutely charming -- with its languid lighting and unpretentious furnishings, it felt happily forgotten and isolated under the bridge. Perfect 1st/2nd date spot--if you take the L train from Manhattan, you'll have nice, 10 minute transitional strolls to and from the spot.

Have been to Diner three times, and still don't know if it's really worth it. The first time, our party found every dish to be a little bit off...the roast chicken was dry at the breast, the tomato salad had godawful cardboardy tomatoes, etc. The second time was a little better, although the selection & presentation of the cheese plate was disappointing...poorly matched coices served in unappealing chunks on a plate rolling with hazelnuts. Small portions of the right cheeses would have been far more satisfying. The third time was the best, and we had a great time. Food was creative and well-done (I had monkfish poached in broth with lentils and fennel) and it MIGHT have made me change my mind about htis place. I appreciate their committment to fresh, local, small-farmed produce, and hope they can catch a groove soon.

Brunch definitely outshines dinner at this cute little spot in South Williamsburg. Beware, it's not the cheapest brunch fare but it's worth the trip. You get hungover rockers, thirtysomething would be hipsters attempting the Sunday times at the bar, and some really good food. The egg sandwich is a local fave. Dinner on the other hand was not so good the last night I went as the duck was not fully cooked and there was too little meat on the bone. The guys sitting next to my table also had the same problem. My bloody mary was horrible and looked more like a cosmopolitan. In retrospect I should have ordered the pork steak. The cappuccino I had was unfortunately the best part of the meal.

Definitely worth the trip from Manhattan. Really great food. Very well thought about specials! Add to that a very cozy and nice atmosphere, very pleasant service and unprentious patrons around you and you know why some make the trip from Manhattan.

Just had my first meal at Diner and I was totally delighted! The atmosphere is adorable, like a small dining car from the Orient Express, but with mood lighting. But our meal was the real reason to come. The fries were the best I've had outside of my favorite Belgian Frites shop, and dessert....! The flourless chocolate cake with homemade whip cream was like liquid chocolate heaven. And sticky toffee pudding couldn't be more authentic. My only complaint is that vegetarians have only one entree and it changes daily, so if you don't like it, you're stuck. Also it can get pretty crowded so come early or very late.

okay. so i've only been here for brunch, but it is great! though people say the staff are williamsburg "trendy" i've only had super nice and great waiters. they're fun and attentive, too. the brunch is possibly a "best" in nyc for the price. and the bloody mary's are perfectly spicy and strong. plus you get to sit in a cute little train car. i've heard dinner is amazing and will try it soon...
