Such a romantic restaurant - the chandeliers throughout are absolutely adorable. This is our anniversary place, but it's still hip enough that you could go with a group of friends for a girls night out or on a first date. The food is phenomenal - and of course the sangria adds to the tapas experience :)

Every single tapas dish that we had, from the octopus to the assorted meats and cheeses plate, to the absolutely delectable shrimp in white wine and butter sauce, was above perfect.

They sell chandeliers from the store next door, which are lit and on display for potential buyers as well. I highly, highly recommend this place and can't say enough about it.

Pros: Gorgeous decor, food, excellent service

Cons: Price, if you care.

The chandeliers are cute but after a while it seems weird that there are so many. The food was good however they need to relax on the garlic. Good thing I went for Brunch? We ordered the pitcher of sangria which between the two of us we had 3 glasses each. I would normally be a little buzzed off of 3 glasses of sangria but I did not feel a thing.
At the end of the meal the waiter just placed the check in between us and didn??t even ask us if we wanted anything else? Drink? Dessert? The place was empty and it wasn??t like people were waiting for our seat. I would have ordered a marg!
Overall I am glad I went but I would not go again. Just felt like I was at my grandparents house and not out in NYC.

We went to Pipa last night with another couple. Our table was ready promptly for our 7pm reservation. Early by city standards. The place was packed when we left around 9:00. The restaurant is truly gorgeous. The seating is tight but that doesn't really bother me. I felt that the service was good. Not overly friendly, but whatever. I don't need my waiter to be my best bud. He was attentive and brought our food out consistently. The reason why I will not be rushing back is because I felt the food was just ok. Yes, certain dishes were very good such as the Hongo Flat Bread and the Piggy Back Dates. But I've had better elsewhere. The calamari which I had heard so many good things about was grossly oversalted and greasy. The cheese plate was tasty but it's kind of difficult to mess up cheese. The sangria was ok. Too sweet for my taste. I will say that we were pleasantly surprised when we got the bill - 1 pitcher of sangria, 2 beers, and 9 tapas later our bill was only $145!!! That is a steal for a nice dinner out in NYC. While I enjoyed my evening I feel like there are far better restaurants in the city to spend a night at.

If you are looking for delicious tapas, Pipa is the place to go. I orgered about 9 different plates with my aunt and not one was a dissapointent. We wished the plates kept coming and coming but our waistbands were tight and of course with tapas, like sushi - you order a bunch of things and then it ads up at the end.

It's a bit loud, service was slow but it was totally worth it i would 100% go back!

The mood at Pipa was warm and casual. The variety and the quality of the Tapas menu was very good. The service was good, however it would have been more pleasurable if the servers smiled and had been a little more attentive at the beginning of our meal.

They had live flamenco music and a dancer. They were entertaining but it was difficult to talk when they were performing. However, their short sets allowed diners to pay attention to them for a few minutes and then return to their table conversations. I think if they worked on the acoustics that would have provided a better ambience.

Overall, I enjoyed my meal at Pipa and would recommend it to my friends.

Favorite place for Tapas. Love all the chandeliers in the restaurant, it's always fun picking out which one you wish you had the money to buy. The food is outstanding! Stuffed Piquillos, Calamari (amazing!), scallops, shrimp, patatas la brava, crab croquettes. Calamari by far the best though. Sit long enough and the manager may just buy you a pitcher of sangria to get you to move to the bar. haha

I had dinner at Pipa on Sat night for my girlfriend's birthday. There were 6 of us girls and we ordered a bunch a tapas plates. Let me just say that EVERYTHING was scrumptuous. Everything had a robust, unique taste; most things simply were melt-in-your-mouth amazing. If you go, you must try the Veggie flatbread, the calamari (best calamari I've ever had, hands-down), the wild mushrooms, at least one three-cheese plate, and for dessert, the Bomba de Chocolate. You MUST have the sangria as well. It is phenomenal. The best part besides the food? Totally reasonable prices. It came out to about $50 a person for everything, 3 pitchers of sangria included! I've never spent so little on such a fantastic meal.
Another cool thing is that because it's tapas, you can order a bunch of plates, and if you're still hugnry or want to try something else after you've started eating, you can keep ordering and the food keeps coming, in a timely matter no less. The waitstaff was attentive without being obtrussive. The ambience is great. It's dark, beatiful, and cozy. My only other recommendation is to make a reservation and make it a few days in advance if you want a prime time. It was so crowded, I can't imagine getting a seat if you're just walking in off the street.
Pipa is definitely worth your time and energy!

I love this restaurant for it's fabulous ambiance, delicious food and the sangria, oh the sangria. I eat here 2x per month and work for a very high end luxury fashion company - book lots of reservations here for our "C" levels...they love it too...

Except - I just called to make a reservation and they didn't have anything available so I was trying to talk to the "host" about options and he was soooooo rude - in fact, he hung up on me before I was finished speaking. Guess he's too busy to care about customers since they are so booked up. If the owners or anyone of significance reads this, try to talk to your people about being rude on the phone - you never know who you're speaking to... ; )

With Tapas on my mind i looked for a quick fix to my craving in the Union Square area. A quick search later i found Pipa, a rustic bohemian meets grand ballroom feel with tasty and reasonably priced fare for all. The chandeliers and unfinished ceilings make the feel both comforting but still high end. The staff was attentive and courteous. My favorite was the shrimp tapas. Making an online reservation was totally convenient and the prices were totally reasonable. I impressed my date and felt like a savvy new yorker. Take a chance and check out Pipa.

The food is outstanding and the atmosphere is lovely. The size of the restaurant, the menu and wine list, and the quality of service give it a very european feel.

Everything we ordered for dinner was wonderful, and simply, but beautifully presented. The servers was available if we needed them, but they did not overrun our dinner checking on us. The focus of dinner was the food, wine, and my company, not the pomp and decor of the restaurant. I very much appreciate that.

This place is awesome with friends, for dinner, drinks and lots of sangria. We ordered a good amount of small plates and enjoyed the red and white sangria which was absolutely delicious. The food is not too heavy and absolutely delightful. I would recommend making reservations because it is normally crowded. The ambience was nice, although the servers aren't equally as friendly. It is really lou din there so I would not recommend taking your date there after 8 on weekends.

Just thinking about Pipa makes me smile. I have been here several times and it is the one restaurant in memory that I can say has surpassed my expectations every single time. The Arroz con pollo is phenomenal and I can eat everyday. Their entrees have always been exceptional- simply prepared and perfect. Our last meal there ended with a dessert that I've been craving ever since.

I have always been happy with the service. The wait staff probably errs on leaving you alone more than some may be comfortable with, but I'm rather easily irritated by staff who are constantly asking if I need anything. The decor is romantic and welcoming and exactly the kind of space that makes eating enjoyable.

I will certainly return here again with high expectations. One of my favorite simple restaurants in the city.

The tapas we ordered were all wonderful, the service was good (although not noteworthy), and the room has a very romantic ambiance. The bacon-wrapped almond-stuffed dates were my favorite thing. I went there for dinner with my boyfriend on a Saturday night. Although we didn't mind, the tables are very close together. We split 6 tapas and one dessert, which was the perfect amount of food for us. And surprisingly, for the amount of delicious food we ate, plus wine and coffee, we thought the price was very reasonable.

hard to tell with this place. I'd advise no weekend trips when all the young 20's daddy's girls go to it prior to going out....well if you are a guy it wouldn't be that bad. However the tables are small and you are packed in there. If you get a seat to the wall, forget it you can't get to the bathroom.

Plates come fast and randomly...whatever is done first comes. You will be rushed out if it's a busy nite.

Oh and hope you are good of hearing b/c it's loud.

The ambiance is great: dark lighting, exposed brick, and beautiful for-sale chandeliers hung from high ceilings. The food we had was fantastic. Great chorizo and honey-glazed calamari. The steak flat bread and ham croquetas were delicious as well. With just these 4 tapas dishes, my date and I were stuffed, and it cost us less than most other dinners of this caliber in NYC. Thumbs WAY up!

I like Pipa, but there's so many drawbacks, I don't go very often. I like the food, despite the limited menu. They really should consider adding more tapas and variety. The ones we have tried have been very tasty. For the people complaining about the small portions - these are tapas, not entrees! They're typical tapas size. For two of us, we usually get 4, which leaves us satisfied. The service has usually been below average. Slow, not super friendly, they drop your food off and don't return to your table throughout the whole meal. To get a refill on drinks is always a challenge. And it is very crowded, tables much too close. The bar area is set up in a way that it leaves very VERY little room along the bar, and it's often so crowded you can't get to the bar or move. The decor is very pretty, which is one of my favorite things about this place. Obviously the location is good, too. Dont go out of your way to get here, but overall its a decent meal.

A couple of friends and I wanted to enjoy drinks and tapas outside. However, we were informed by both the hostess and then the manager that it was dining only outside- and that there was a minimum of tapas per person. We were going to order a few appetizers, but didn?t want to commit to a certain number since we weren?t that hungry. There was NO ONE outside, so we offered to sit outside but go back in if it filled up. The manager was completely inflexible and refused to make any kind of accommodations for us. So we left and had a lovely time (and spent a lot of money) at L?Express. By the way, I was here last summer and definitely sat outside and only ordered drinks (delicious mojitos) so I don?t know why service has deteriorated so much. This place definitely does not reflect what the atmosphere of a tapas place is supposed to be like.

Went here with a friend on a Wednesday night. The place was jammed. I highly recommend making reservations if you're planning on going during prime dinner hours. Since we did not have reservations, there was a 45 min wait for 2 ppl. We were told we could wait at the bar if we like. The bar was JAMMED. I would not suggest getting a table near the bar b/c the bar overflow will be right on top of you, knocking into your chair. We decided to make the best of it and get drinks and catch up on some girl talk. An hour later, we still had not been called for a table and people that had came after us were being seated. I walked up to the hostess and she claimed she didn't know b/c she wasn't there when I gave my name. She said she would ask the other hostess. Neither of them ever came back over to give me an update so after another 15 min I walked back over and asked what was up. Miraculously, our table was 'just ready'. I don't think they're very organized at the hostess desk and taking reservations. It was quite obvious our name we had given when we got there fell through the cracks somehow. As far as the food goes, it's just alright. Not a whole lot of selection, nothing really 'wowed' me on the menu, it's a bit overpriced, the portions are small, and the food came out luke warm at best. The wait staff constantly hovers over you and snatches the plate out from under you before you've gotten the last bite from the plate into your mouth. It makes you feel like you're just a bunch of cattle being herded in an out instead of having an enjoyable dining experience.

I've been to Pipa twice and will never return. The first time was on a Saturday and it was really crowded. The tables are really close so you are practically sitting on top of the person next to you. I went again last night. The server came by 5 times to ask if we were still working on the plates that had food on them. Then the manager came over and asked if he could by us a drink at the bar so we get up from the table. There was no one waiting for a table when we got to the bar. They were trying to rush us out of there for an hour for no reason. Don't waste your time, food is ok, service is terrible.

Sure... more for the vibe than the food but.... I lived in Madrid for some time so I love a spanish restaurant with nice crowd to match. Sundays are my days ( I can't account for the others) where I've noticed the people are laidback, open and friendly. They even bring in a Salsa band for live music. Love it.

I read the review about the service and I have to agree.. there's a blonde waiter (male) working for this place who's pretty cold and is always in a rush. But try to stay around the bar and you can avoid the "server" problem all together....

If they can take care of that service issue they get 5 stars from me.

Food is mostly good. The main problem is that the portions are so small that they redefine the word tapas to mean 3-4 servings a person will still not fill you up. That, 12 dollar drinks, and service that would get a subway train conductor fired make this an experience worth skipping.

This is the second time i've been to Pipa and after the first time, i couldn't wait to go back, but after this time, it will be a while before i go again - if at all. The food is very good, however, yesterday i brought in a group of clients to entertain for lunch and we had a group of 8. It was not crowded in the slightest bit and our server was TERRIBLE. I was a bartender at one point in my life and i'm usually very forgiving for bad service if the person is at least giving it a full effort, but he obviously was not. His attitude was terrible and he was not friendly at all. One person in our group had questions about the menu and it was as if we were annoying him. I dont know if he didnt care b/c he knew he would be getting the 20% gratuity for a party our size or what, but i've always been one to tip extra for good service and i did not yesterday b/c he ruined our meal. I dont think it was as big of a deal for the rest of the group, but to me - as the person picking up the tab - I will not look to Pipa to entertain a large group again. There are plenty of other places that would love the business. The whole experience was terribly disappointing

Living in Spain for a year has turned me into quite the Spanish tapas snob but I must say that Pipa went beyond my expectations. I was expecting a trendy, loud restaurant with watered down sangria and sub-par tapas. While the Sangria was a bit weak, the tapas were really tasty and more authentic than most ?spanish? restaurants in Manhattan. With some of the best tapas I have had in NYC, and a bill that does not put a dent in your wallet, I will be happy to return to Pipa.

Pros: Tapas, ambiance, fun

Cons: crowded, watery sangria

My friend and I went on a Wednesday afternoon (6pm). There was lots of seating, so we were promptly seated. I must say the tapas choices were limited. We ordered and did get our food promptly (again, not very crowded). The food was OK, nothing special. I did feel it was overpriced, but I was there to enjoy conversation, not for the food. Well, once we were done, the waiter kept on coming back. We felt pressured to keep on ordering, so we ordered dessert. Once we were done with that, the waiter just plunked down the check. We kept on talking until what I'm assuming was the manager came and offered to "buy us drinks at the bar". On seeing our perplexed faces, he said he needed the table and basically kicked us out. Perhaps if it was a weekend, I could understand, but it was a WEDNESDAY!! Very rude. I do NOT recommend this place at all. I will never go back. Bad customer service.

I went to Pipa with a large group (I believe there were 25 of us) and we were seated and served promptly. The ambiance is beautiful, perfect for a first, second or, for that all important, third date (*wink wink*) . The tapas experience is so much more enhanced when sharing it with good friends. This is a great place to go with friends or to entertain out-of-town guests, as I was. The neighborhood is great for a lovely New York evening. P.S. Try the shrimp potpie. Awesome!

Pros: Amibiance, FOOD and Tapas!

Cons: Sangria (not the best)

.

On a recent office outing we went to Pipa and had an excellent time. The service was seemless, and the food and the sangria was to die for. The calamari was so tasty that we had 4 orders of it, and the sangria flowed like the Nile. Later on in the night some guy decided to act like a rooster and started crowing in the middle of the place. Not really sure why the guy did this, but it was entertaining. The same guy also proceeded to eat prawn eyes, and eat the brains of the prawn (a delicasy in China). On a side note this place is also excellent to celebrate a briss. I would like to end with a shoutout to Mother Hen, cluck, cluck, cluck.

Pros: Excelent food and service

Cons: Very cramped seating

After multiple visits to Pipa, I felt compelled to drop a line or two. Unlike someone remarked before, their selection on tapas is very wide and appealing. I usually take a table outside, and service has been always very solid and consistent, maybe bacause I always get the same polite, fast and attentive server...After living in Europe for a while, the food and hospitality of this place makes me feel a little nostalgic...Only once I had a problem with my mojito, but my waiter was more than helpful in resolving the situation...Try the Paella, it is a must since the really use Bomba rice !!!

I was there on A Friday Night, weeks ago, and had a blast....Super friendly, smily waitstaff, very receptive and accomodating... and to be honest we were not an easy group to deal with!!! We took over a huge communal table, nearby the bar, and even though the area was extremely crowded, the servers went an extra mile to ensure that we were having a good time...Food was all right, and sangria, out of this world...I will be coming back with more friends!!!

Even after 10pm on a Saturday, all they had was outdoor seating which is cramped and right on the street. I'd wanted to come here bc the space is very cozy and pretty, but the menu was ridiculous. I've never seen such a limited tapas menu. Nothing sounded appetizing and as a vegetarian i was basically limited to potato leek soup. My friend who eats meat was equally unimpressed so we walked out before ordering. Prices are very steep and hosts unfriendly. This place would be better for just drinks at the bar.

Awful service, rude waiter who insulted our intelligence and ignored us unless he wanted to push drinks on us all while being seated under a dripping a/c unit. Pass!

I was there yesterday and it was crowded for a Sunday evening. We had to wait longer than usual for the waiter to show up to get our menu. We ordered white sangria and good thing we didn't order the pitcher because it was awful. I had a bad heache the rest of the night due to the cheap wine used in the sangria and it was way too strong. So while we sipped on our drinks, it took more than 20 minutes for our first tapas to arrive. Then the 2nd one came out about 10 minutes later and it took another 20 minutes for the last 2 tapas to arrive. It was painful having to wait for so long and what made it worse was the the table next to us who was seated after us had all their food while we had to wait. And the tapas was nothing interesting. We would never come back here. It was just awful.

The service was so poor at this restaurant that it ruined the experience. I think that because we had a party more than six the server knew that he was getting 20% and therefore neglected the table. It took over 30 minutes to get our drinks. The food came quickly once ordered, but we had to ask many times for our server to be found because drink orders placed were never brought and orders that we wished to place were abandoned after excessive amounts of time. I suspect that if he had had to work for his gratuity he would have been more attentive. Instead when the close to $400 tab finally arrived, the server had the audacity to let us know that his included 20% gratuity was $2 short. If he had any sense he would have realized that we would have ordered twice as much food and drinks given the opportunity. I love to eat out, but this is not the place you want to do it. There are too many great restaurants in NYC to put up with substandard service.

The place is really cozy and great for a date - my husband and I go here all the time, but you should definitely make reservations since this place fills up. When you're there, make sure you try the sangria - they have both white and red. The food is really tasty, but stick to the tapas. They are better than the main courses, and you're able to try a lot more. The patatas, stuffed dates wrapped in bacon, and salads are our favorites!! The only downside is that some of the tables are too close, and if you have to sit in the middle of the restaurant, it's like you're sharing a big table with other people. If you're lucky, you'll get seated at one of the side tables.

I love Pipa. The staff is friendly, the place is large enough that you aren't sitting on top of your neighbors and the food and drinks are amazing! Go after work , or meet a group of friends.

Pipa has a great rep although I have no idea where it comes from. The decor is indeed, quite lovely - a candle lit, victorian style space with dozens of chandeliers hungs from the ceilings. However, the tapas are sub-par as was the sangria (which is really unacceptable from a tapas bar). I went there on a Saturday night with 2 girlfriends and we ordered a great variety of food: the octopus was over cooked and instead of being chewy, it was soft (like fat) and swimming in oil and that was pretty much the theme of the evening - everything was overcooked and there was no balancing of flavors. HOWEVER, the dessert was amazing - the sorbet was delicate and wonderful, the molten chocolate cake was phenomenal, and the dulce de leche cake was perfect. Pipa is running on inertia of the past -- but if you have good company I guess any place will do.

Service: managers, Ricardo and George, nice people, but severly inexperienced. Food: greasy, bland and uninspired.

First, let me say that we never did actually eat in the dingy, over-cramped restaurant, for that I'm thankful. The night started with an 8:30pm reservation for 6. The hotess finally offered us a 4-top table next to the front door at 10:00pm (at which they later seated a party of 3). We declined and agreed to wait a little longer for an actual 6 person table; that never happened. Instead, around 10:30pm they ushered us over to the fanciful sister restaurant, Lucky Latin or whatever it was and offered the Pipa menu. The food was overpriced. Clearly not worth the time or trouble of enduring the incompetent staff. Thank goodness they comped the sangria!

I guess this is what you should expect from a restaurant owned by a carpet store.

Great place to start the night around Union Square. Good sangrias, some very unique decor from the furniture department store next door (although leaving the price tags on is a bit tacky but in the dark you won't notice...much). The food is solid, but if food is meant to be the highlight I'd say go elsewhere.

This restaurant is one of my favorite places in the city - perfect for a date or dinner with a group of friends. The atmosphere is amazing and the sangria is delicious. The tapas are great, i am obsessed with the calamari! My only complaint is that the seating process is somewhat inefficient. 2 out of the past 3 times I've been there we have had to wait over 1/2 an hour for our table, despite having a reservation and arriving on time. That to me is ridiculous and contradicts the purpose of calling and making a reservation in the first place. The meal has always been worth it though.

My dinner experience last Thursday at Pipa was memorable, and still lingers in my palate and mind thanks to the succulent tapas and the outstanding service provided by our server that night, an extremely professional and affable Spaniard. Pineapple mojitos to startoff, and a delightful Ribera to match the myriad of tapas that we ordered. The server and helpers seemed to be in perfect sync, and their sense of hospitality ( sadly, a rarity in NYC ) did create an overall cordial and festive atmosphere. Scallops, dates, croquettes and Paella were truly delicious.
