Owned by Regal Cinemas, United Artists Movies at the Falls 12 is the last stop for miles if you want to watch a movie. The next nearest moviehouse is the new Regal Southland in the old Cutler Ridge mall -- and trust me, you don't want to go there.

The Falls is located in the most costly residential neighbourhood, next to Coral Gables, in Miami -- Pinecrest. Home to such people as ex-Governor Jeb Bush, and recently the domicile of OJ Simpson, the area is not as high-brow as Coconut Grove, not as middle-class as Kendall, not as well-heeled as Coral Gables. It also has an overwhelmingly American air, in a city with marked international presence.

(Curiously, at night it transforms itself from upper-class to taking all comers, from older to younger, almost as if by switch when the sun goes down. It often feels less safe at night, therefore)

The theatre itself has recently been revamped, even given the fact that it had been refurbished when Hurricane Andrew devastated The Falls mall in 1992. The seats are now reclinable, you can fold up the armrests, and the acoustics are fantastic. The caveat is that the auditoriums still tend to be very small, often seating less than 150, and you have to arrive on time because the good seats fill up quickly.

It is a very intimate auditorium, and given the plethora of young marrieds and their kids, it is a youthful one. This is the place to take young children for the Disney film that just came out, not the art-house indie, which are rarely offered anyway.

For some reason, the Concessions stand always seems understaffed, and though it offers the same kinds of food as other Regal/UAs, it seems to have less quality than other places. The arcade is also just a few machines, though space is plentiful.

Being a proper outdoor mall, it is a great place to visit, with ample parking, and a safe atmosphere in daylight.

Come for the movies. Stay for the ambiance.

PROS: Kid-Family-friendly. Updated decor. Medium-priced tickets. Easy parking.
CONS: Slow staff. Underwhelming amenities. Still rather smallish.
