My husband and I wanted to have a special first Christmas together dining experience. I selected Sterlings after seeing the cozy, romantic photos and reading their menu on their web site. It seems we surprised the staff by showing up for our reservation and we were placed at an available table in a bright noisy room next to a large table with lots of active children. While I realise that one doesnt always wish to work on Christmas Day, it was one of the first things out of our waiters mouth. When we asked about wine by the glass, he didnt know their selection and just brought us a glass of the varietal we were interested in. I still dont know what it was. The food was average. I was really hoping for over the moon, espcially for the price. The waiter remarked how lucky we were as we got the last crab cakes of the day. It left me wondering if we got less than normal size portion as the chef had to make do. I had the chicken marsala, which was very tasty with the smallest serving of noodles Ive ever seen and 5 green beans which were inedible. My husbands pasta and shrimp entree was good, although he thought a bit salty, and for him to mention that, it must have been really salty. I think the final bad taste came when we got our bill. While it seems standard practice for a gratuity to be automatically added for tables of 5 or more, and while I can understand a gratuity to be automatically added on for a holiday meal, 20% seems artificially high and leaves no room for the customers opinion of service, but it also was never brought to our attention. If I hadnt asked my husband questions regarding the bill and why it seemed so high, we never would have noticed it and we would have ended up double tipping service that was alright, but not out of the ball park. This left us with a sense of almost being taken in. Not the joyful experience I wanted to leave the restaurant with

Went to Sterlings for the first time recently. It is one of three Mobil 3-star restaurants in jacksonville.

Overall atmosphere was nice. Indoor decor was well done and there is a pretty courtyard out back, where we opted to dine. We were a little disapppointed that the lunch menu on their website was not up to date, as both of our first choices (portabello mushroom sandwich and mussels) were on the online menu but
not on the menu in the restaurant.

I'm not sure why those 2 dishes were no longer on the lunch menu. It doesn't make any sense. But then again, except for the Mossfire Grill, every restaurant I've been to in Jacksonville has been out of several items on their menu.

The manager came out to address our concerns about the differences in menus and in place of the mushroom sandwich asked the chef to make a vegetarian panini. My partner had poached salmon.

We shared the fried green tomato appetizer, which was quite tasty. One minor critique is that the tomatoes were red, not green. Again it was very good though a little sweet due to the difference in tomatoes. I would order that dish again. The salmon dish was also a bit on the sweet side.

I found the wine list to be a bit pricy and heavy on California wines; a bit of a turn-off for me given the restaurant's ratings.

We were happy with all 3 dishes and will try Sterlings again, but probably we will try the other two 3-star restaurants first.

Overall service was pretty good, however I would expect no less from a Mobil 3-star restaurant.

(note, the lunch menu online has still not been updated. Given that, the wine list, the red tomatoes and the sweetness of the salmon dish, I take 1/2 a star off, making their score 3 and 1/2, however, since this site doesn't provide a way to do 1/2 stars, they get a 3. Sorry, can't give it 4 stars based on this experience).

Pros: Ambience, Good food (not great but good)

.

This is the worst banquet experience I have ever had. The banquet staff was terrible! The food was bland and over buttered. I have had better fish at a fast food Applebees. The owner was degrading.

We just moved from Los Angeles and a business associate suggested that we try Sterling's. We were quite surprised and impressed coming from LA. The first time we stopped by they had a Beeliner Snapper on special that was impeccable and we were blown away by the ambience of the place and the courtyard was intimate. My wife loves coming here for lunch and doesn't stop talking about their Chinese Chicken Cashew Salad. Sterling's has definitely become one of our favorite restaurants. Living in the neighborhood it's a nice evening stroll to have a few cocktails and some of their wonderful grillers....We'll be seeing you there next weekend.

We had the best soft shell crabs and veal chops with a brandy cream sauce that we both loved. Really enjoyed the outdoor courtyard. So romantic!!

Having moved to Avondale from France about eight months ago, I was lucky enough to find Sterlings of Avondale soon after arriving in Jacksonville. The food is always top notch-- well prepared, well presented and above all the resturant is very clean. Lamb is good, steaks are excellent and something I could not get in Europe, fried green tomatos!! The best part is that after leaving the dog home all day I can take him with me to eat dinner. The staff is always very gracious and brings out a bowl of water for the dog and allows him to run free in the back patio. The best part is that I am never alone for dinner as someone always wants to come out and pet the dog.
A really great dining experience. Thanks to all. LL

My wife and I had made reservations for Feb. 15th at 7:30. We arrived and were seated promptly, offered black napkins, and were assured that the waiter would return shortly to tell us about the specials. This was the last time we saw him.

The table next to us was obviously friends of the owners or somesuch, as our waiter immediately went over, chatted them up, offered them wine, read the specials (twice), and essentially waited hand and foot while we waited patiently. The table behind us, who was seated a few minutes earlier and also left to languish, actually got up and left before ordering because another random waitress came over and told them "I guess I'll be your waitress, even though you're not my table. No one seems to know what is going on here." Direct quote.

We got a similar random waitress who took our dinner order. We were never even offered a chance to look at the wine list. Meanwhile, the "friends" table were on their second bottle. Watching them, we noticed that they were provided with bread and salad before their entrees arrived. We received neither. Their waiter approached them every few minutes to ensure their happiness. Our waitress dropped off our entrees and was not to be seen again until delivering our check.

My wife ordered a vegetarian pasta dish that was watery and bland. My "Steak Victor" was tasty, but only because the beef was high-grade. The rest of the dish was unidentifiable.

Without hyperbole, this was the single worst dining experience. We would have received better service and food at Outback. Unless you're friends of the owners, go across the street to Biscotti's instead.

Pros: Good quality meat, clean.

Cons: McDonalds has better service and food.

as new restaurants open every day i had forgotten about how wonderfull my experiences at sterlings of avondale had truely been until a recent trip back. The restaurant was aglow with the holiday spirit and an equally glowing warmth of the service and ambiance. The food was cooked to perfection, and i thought the lamb was the best ever. The experience brought me back to when i can get whatever i wanted, by just asking. thank you for a great way to end the special day
