Very meaty ribs with tips on. Smoked in a real pit and cooked just right leaving just the right amount of crust and fat on them. Best in Tampa??? Well at the very least, it is another good rib joint. Give them a try. The 3 bone rib

My husband works at MacDill AFB in Tampa but our main home is on the east coast of FL. Since he started working here I come over on weekends and we always get BBQ at Uncle Rodney's. Dreamland in Tuscaloosa and Daddy Bruce's in Denver were our favorites but Daddy Bruce and "Big Daddy" died and we thought great BBQ was dead until we found Uncle Rodney's. We love the ribs and sausage, but haven't had anything we didn't enjoy. Real wood BBQ, not propane or gas. I don't care for baked beans as a rule, but love Uncle Rodney's and the rest of my family likes any baked beans but craves Uncle Rodney's. His potato salad is like Mama makes and the slaw is just as good. It is everything BBQ should be. Picnic tables on a screened porch. No funky decorations that try too hard to be "country". Just a clean little neighborhood joint that is a refreshing break from too cute chain restaurants.
If my husband retires and no longer has a little apartment in (Ballest Point) Tampa we will drive two hours to come over for his down home REAL BBQ. Other posts trashing Uncle Rodney's must be from people who need to have something to gripe about. People who take children to a restaurant and allow them to wander around and misbehave should be kicked out if they don't get their children under control. Proprietors are not babysitters and other diners want to throttle the kids. Teach your children to mind or take them out like we "the geezers" did. My husband or I took ours out to the car and ate in shifts many times until they learned to sit properly and not misbehave. Florida law or not if a child touches anything in any business and breaks it the parents are responsible for replacing it. LISTEN UP PARENTS!
If you want excellent food and a friendly, hands on owner-operator who gives portions big enough to have leftovers don't miss out on Uncle Rodney's. If you go at closing you may find he is out of something, but not to worry. What ever you get will be mouth watering and plenty of it.

My cousin from Tampa, best friend from the midwest, and I went to Uncle Rodneys to try the ribs. They are excellent and the price is good especially when you get the family order of ribs and split them. The baked beans are delicious and the cole slaw is tasty. The only thing I could complain about is don't dine in during the summer months as the fans just don't cool it off enough to justify eating inside. I would highly recommend you try Rodneys.

First, Rodney, Pay your TAXES!

The food was good, because of the smoked meat. His BBQ has no seasoning, along with everything else he serves. So overall just ok.
Then he comes out to talk to the customers. He is self righteous and believes he is the BBQ King of Tampa. This was the biggest turn off.
Second, Pay your Taxes!

Pros: Wood smoked meat

Cons: Owner has to tell you how great he is, when you eat

This place is amazing. I had some friends take me there when i first got to Macdill back in 06 and i keep going back. Its without a doubt the best bbq place in south tampa. Tried Kojak's...not enough food for the price. Tried Alabama's....too dry. And tried Pitmaster's...same as Alabama's. Amazing food, Great Service...Affordable! YOU HAVE TO GO~

I have noticed similar tastes to First Choice BBQ in Brandon/Tampa (corner of Falkenburg and Adamo), but it's great to have a place sooooo close to the base. The food is great and it feels like a picnic...no frills.

However, don't forget to bring cash with you...their machine is down most times. In this economy where a Debit Card/Credit Card is mostly used...that can ruin a business, regardless of how good it is.

Even with that...the smokey flavor of the ribs are great and it's realllllly easy to over order...also, you will love the potato salad!!!

Enjoy!

My husband and I are originally from Kansas city, where we grew up around lots of good bbq. Now that we live in Florida, good bbq is hard to come by! But then I found Uncle Rodney's.. And I have to say it is probably some of the BEST bbq we have ever had! My personal favorite is the pulled pork sandwich, while my husbands is the ribs. It's a nice balance between smokey and saucy, so you get the best of both worlds! just try his place out, you would be crazy if you didn't like it!

A friend of mine turned me on to Uncle Rodney a few years ago and I have to say that I have been coming back since. I visit Rodney at least once a week, either for his lunch special of a pork sandwich, two sides, and a drink for $7.54 or for his beef sandwich. Both are amazing!! If I'm ever real hungry, I'll have the two meat special and combine the two. There are not enough good things that can be said about Rodney and his business. Great food, great customer service, and great location. He is located on MacDill Ave which avoids the Dale Mabry traffic. My only complaint is that he is closed on Sundays (especially now with Football season), but the man needs some time off! I have to say though that he opened for the Superbowl a few years ago and it was the best Superbowl meal I've had.

Great Experience!! I had unexpected guest planning to join us for dinner. I left work and decided to try UNCLE RODNEY's Rib house because I had heard from many people at MacDill AFB that the food was excellent. And they were correct. Great food and the barbecue sauce was awesome. I asked Rodney for his advice as to how much I should buy to feed eight adults and serveral children. He was "SPOT ON"! Combination of Ribs and Chicken fed everyone to include seconds. Highly recommend.

Pros: Quality and Quantity for the price!!

Cons: Small dinning area; however, take out service is excellent and food remains warm.

The bbq at Uncle Rodney's is unmatchable. It is the best bbq in South Tampa and definately one of Tampa's best kept secrets. As for the review before this where the patrons were disgruntled that their child broke a $21 item that did not belong to them or their child, perhaps if you spent more time watching your child, this would not have happened. Too many parents think it is cute for their children to run around food establishments while they are busy shoveling food into their mouths... If you do not want to pay for items your children break, maybe you should leave them at home and let the rest of us regular diners enjoy our food. For all others readers, definately try Rodney's you won't be dissapointed.

Pros: bbq sauce is amazing, ribs were tender and fell of the bone

Cons: a few more side item choices would be nice

My 2 year old daughters were at Uncle Rodneys and one managed to get her hands on a pig figurine that "Uncle Rodney" had displayed; long story short it broke. Rodney's response? "You can pay for that, it cost $21.50." First, the pig should never have been at the height it was displayed - my daughters are short for their height to begin with! Second, had she been cut by the figure, we could have been asking him to cover medical costs. Third, it is ILLEGAL in this state to require patrons to pay for broken merchandise. Fourth, and most frustrating, we have been LOYAL customers since 2001! We followed Rodney when he had to move buildings and this is how we get thanked. We paid the $21.50 and now plan to make it know how Rodney repays loyal customers! Shame on you Rodney!!!

I moved to Tampa from Miami, but I am originally from Chicago. I was dying trying to find a good bbq spot in Tampa. I tried Jimbos, not good, the ribs wer not big and the taste, was just not there. Then I tried Kojaks. The sauce was okay, but the ribs were missing something. I then realized that Kojaks smokes in a propane smoker!!!! If you don't see smoke and smell BBQ a mile away something is wrong. Rodney's had real wood and I could smell it as I pulled in. it has quickly become a staple for me to grab bbq in South Tampa. If you are a fan of real wood smoked BBQ the only place in town is Rodneys.

I am a downhome Southerner from Mississippi but the BBQ that Uncle Rodney smokes up is better than any BBQ that I've ever had at home!! Umm umm umm fantastic! Beware! Once you try it, you will probably love it and get cravings that will make you drive down to this restaurant anytime of the day! If you don't know anything about BBQ, perhaps you won't understand. However, for those of you who know your BBQ, you must get to know Uncle Rodney's Rib House. PS: The owner is very nice and aside from the food, his kindness makes the 20 min drive from Westchase bearable :)

Pros: Best BBQ in this part of the country!

Cons: I prefer to take my meal home opposed to dining inside. Not much space. Not a problem for me though!

.

My experience has been that the management is rude and disrespectful of its customers. Will not be going back and will not recommend this place to anyone.

This is the real deal.... Best BBQ in town, wood smoked with tons of flavor and tender. The greens are a must. Don't believe the negative postings about food poisining as they likely come from angry neighbors who don't like the smoke his pit produces. I've eaten there over 25 times, and the only thing I ever got was a full belly and some sauce on my shirt! I fancy myself a BBQ connoisseur and make it a point to try new BBQ places during my travels. I always come home to the best- Uncle Rodney's.

This message is for the couple (mrjohnhiggins) who stated they had a bad meal @ Uncle Rodney's BBQ location. First & foremost, this great restaurant is located @ 5712 S. MacDill Avenue, Tampa 33611, (813) 837-1727. I have no idea where Curtis Street is or even if there is such a restaurant located there. (mrjohnhiggins) probably got ill from another far away restaurant. This is why I must clarify and defend this restaurant because we dine there quite a bit. Elderly people tend not to eat much, but my 92 year old mother LOVES the food and eats quite a bit for her age. She, nor I, have never ever gotten ill from eating there. If anyone would get ill, it would be my mother. So this is to you, (mrjohnhiggins), the food is always served HOT, cold items served COLD, chicken and ribs are the BEST anywhere (this holds true for both dine in and carry out). This is from people who dine quite often @ Uncle Rodney's BBQ restaurant. Inside is always clean, overhead fans work very well, and always a breeze inside location. Employees and owner always a pleasure to see and to talk to. Also, this restaurant does the surrounding neighborhood alot of good!! There are quite a few businesses in the same area that should be considered dirty. Uncle Rodney's restaurant is in the top of the line of being clean! I believe mrjohnhiggins owes Uncle Rodney an apology. If you're not human enough to do so, I will gladly apologize for you.

Last Friday night my wife and I got take out from this restaurant. We probably should have known better when we went inside and it was over 100 degrees! The food looked good at first but the chicken seemed a little under cooked and the cold slaw a little warm. We shouldn't have taken another bite. The little that we ate made both of us very ill. Within about an hour we had it coming out of both ends. We tried to call the restaurant to let them know there was a problem but they didn't answer the phone. Instead, we filed a complaint with the State of Florida business regulations. I hope that no one ever has to go through this. This restaurant is filthy and is a eyesore to the neighborhood. I hope this email helps to prevent others from have the same bad experience that we did. With any luck, the board of health will shut them down.
Shame on you UNCLE RODNEY

I just recently purchased property near Uncle Rodney's Rib House from relocating from overseas. My friends took me here for dinner and it was to die for....the chicken was out of this world, so moist and tender, and it was the first time I had tried Collard Greens and it too was sooo good. His staff was so polite and Uncle Rodney is a real gentleman himself. I am from Ireland and I travel to and from Miami and Orlando for my career in modeling. The place was small but cozy and wery friendly among the other customers dining there and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves while they were eating. I plan on bringing some of America's top models into Uncle Rodney's Rib House for them to decide themselves, on the B-E-S-T B-B-Q.
An update on my previous visit..........I want to know why Uncle Rodney is still a single man? Is it he hasnt found the right lady to become his wife/partner, does he date any race or just his own? We visited his business not too long ago and as always the food is out of this world, nothing has changed, still the fastest service and his staff is very friendly and polite. I will drop in again soon and introduce myself with a face and not my stage name...
2008 update:
On the way to Air Hangar ? at TIA to board plane heading to Miami, my manager stopped his hummer and ran in to Uncle Rodney's Rib House for me, as it was very busy and we parked across the street. He ordered my favorite, once again and he also ordered more for the flight crew ...Uncle Rodney...your chicken and ribs are still out of this world !!!! Not one person was talking on the flight down to Miami because we were all enjoying our dinner, thank you again Uncle Rodney, you are still the best.
2009 update:
Was told some harsh remarks, from a neighbor, about a situation you were involved in, is this true?
It seems like your business has decreased, since the incident..
Stuff like this scares me.
Will keep my distance until this incident gets cleared up.
Sorry Uncle Rodney. :(
Update 2010
I have been out of the country for a while back at first home home in Ireland, but now I am at my second home in Tampa.
I was told by my neighbor that your place has RATS and that the RATS are always seem in the field next door and in the parking lot. Is this true Uncle Rodney?
Does your RATS ever get on to your grill? I use to love eating your chicken and collard greens but now I am scared to enter your place for fear that what my neighbor told me is true.
2010 (final update)
I will always keep you in my prayers. I am sorry for what you have been through, although I still can not enter your place of business, from what I heard from many neighbors(rats inside your business and not paying taxes). You need to start your life over again and relocate your business to a new address. Start with a clean record and you will be on top again, rather than at the bottom. Good Luck Uncle Rodney.

The best bbq that I have ever had! Unlike Kojak's,the ribs are tender without being mushy. The sauce is perfect, tangy, just the way I like it. The sides are pretty good, I think they've made improvements. Frankly , Uncle is loosing money! If he had a real bbq sitdown, he'd make a killing! I can't emagine if he owned the Kojak bbq property with his bbq, there would be no better place!

Pros: the best bbq ribs

Cons: can't go out to dinner with friends and family, and enjoy a fantastic bbq rib meal

.

If you are looking for the BEST BBQ in Tampa Bay, this is the place. It is not a fancy place but eat in or take out the food is great. I actualy live 14 miles away from this place, but gladly travel it 3 or 4 times a month for the great food.
