One day I was looking for a good Chinese food take-out place to have dinner. Didn??t care about what the restaurant looked like, just cared about how the food tasted. On my way home from work I caught a slight glimpse of the Golden Phoenix restaurant. Despite having traveled the road everyday for years this was the first time I ever noticed it. Since it wasn??t far from my house, I had to give it a try. Excellent decision.

The restaurant??s atmosphere isn??t much out of the ordinary for a typical Chinese restaurant. It does actually have a good sized dining room so you can eat there. The restaurant is rather clean, certainly better than a lot I??ve been in. It??s obvious you don??t go there for a complicated atmosphere, but it??s nothing that would deter anyone.

Upon going to the counter, I was given an opportunity to look over the menu and decide what I wanted. After notifying the person that was at the counter, I ordered General Tso??s chicken with pork fried rice and an egg roll. The guy was nice and smiled the whole way though (all of 10 seconds, but still). The order came to $7.70, which is right in line with the majority of such restaurants.

Within about 5 minutes I got my food. I decided to eat in the restaurant and sat down at a booth. The instant I took my first bite of the chicken, I was in disbelief. It was some of the best General Tso??s I??ve ever come across. The spice was just right- certainly not mellow but not overwhelming. The skin had the right amount of crisp and was well coated with sauce. It had a very bold taste that??s rare in a lot of restaurants. It was simply awesome chicken. The rice was just as good- not too moist but not too dry, and good flavor. The eggroll was decent as well. Overall it was enough that I had to complement the guy who made it. The portion was great too. Where you usually get more rice than chicken in volume, this was actually the other way around. I got enough to fill me up to the point I struggled for the last bits of rice. For $7.70 I felt like I got a really good deal.
