Took my 4 year old son in for his first dentist appointment last month to Dr Rod Emory. He sat quietly thru the cleaning, brushing, flossing, flouride treatement and xrays. Then Dr Emory came in, spent 3-5 minutes in his company and told me that he had 5 cavities in his molars, and it was virtually impossible for him to treat them with local anesthetic because he was "too wriggly". He couldn't use nitrous oxide because my son couldn't understand to breath through his nose (in his opinion). Dr Emory wanted me to take him to the hospital and have him put under general anesthesia. When I asked about the risks for that, he just said "there are risks with everything" He said his very worst case scenario would be to try to do the fillings in his office with local anesthetic, my son would never sit still for it. Not liking the general anesthesia option, or the additional $3250 it would cost, I made some calls. Took him to Dr Scott Freeman in Boise. Over two appointments lasting a total of 1 hr 15 min, he did all 5 fillings with no problems whatsoever, and my son was completely unconcerned about the whole thing. Dr Freeman said you just need to take the time to explain what is going on to the child, and give them a little distraction. My opinion of Dr Rod Emory is he shouldn't be a pediatric dentist, why be a pediatric dentist if you don't want to deal with or interact with conscious children?? He was going to add thousands to my bill, and subject my 4 year old son to the risks of general anesthesia for absolutely no reason, because he didn't want to have to talk to him or interact with him while he was awake.
