My girls and I love coming to UMNH and can spend hours in the museum. The faculty and volunteers, you can tell they really care, love the museum and want to educate everyone that walks in the doors in a fun and friendly way. Sometimes things can appear disorganized, smushed or a bit messy BUT I know this will not be the case when they are in their new place in 2011! I want my girls to volunteer here when they are old enough, we talk about this place at home almost every day. If you come, you will see us there! Date Night, Family Day Out or Birthday Party, @UNMH is the place to be! This is a museum that you will stay in for hours and feel like you got your moneys worth You can see more of what I thought about it at the Utah Sassy Scoops site.

Pros: cheap, very informative, very friendly

Cons: they are running out of room for stuff!

The Museum of Natural History's annual "What's in the Basement?" event is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, 2009. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. and, to get the most out of the tour, arrive no later than 4:30 p.m. The Museum will close at 5:30 p.m.

Last year, the event was shut down early due to a broken water pipe that flooded the lobby (but, fortunately, not the basement!). All has been repaired and no such events are expected, but it is good to show up early!

This behind-the-scenes event is included with regular Museum admission. More info at www.umnh.utah.edu/basement

Pros: Once-a-year Opportunity!

Cons: It gets crowded!

I've loved this museum since I was a little kid attending summertime day-camps here. It's a nice place to sit and feel removed from the bustling University crowd. If you get the chance, take advantage of the collection tours in the basement. There's tons of stuff on display, but what goes on behind the scenes is quite fascinating.
