Log Haven's reputation seemed to have been sterling for special events and that is what drew our family there for our event. It is such a beautiful location at any time of year, but the location is the only item that came through in our special event experience. We planned and scheduled 6 months ahead, and called, emailed and met with event staff, to try and assure that we knew what to expect, what the cost would be, and what the restaurant would provide with regard to service, venue and food. Unfortunately the experience was not what we had been lead to believe it would be. What should have been a relatively worry free and joyous event was filled with angst and sluggish service that appeared unprepared. After all of the planning and working on beautiful decor, collecting vintage vases for floral arrangements, and coordinating a team to set up, the restaurant was not prepared on their end. Rehearsals overlapped for the event and were rushed by the coordinating staff. The venue was not adaquately prepared for the weather that day, as it promised it could be, and the staff was not helpful, and infact were curt and even at times rude or unavailable. The meal started late because a dish wasn't ready so several guests left before eating. Despite a provision of having staff there to pace the event and over see that things were done in a timely manner, this didn't happen. Guests were asking the family and bride and groom when dinner would be served, when desert would be served, where the bathroom was, and many simply left early, most not staying for the traditional cake. Once the meal buffet was ready for guests it was a disappointment to find that the menu was not at all as it had been presented. Althought the food was the same, it was all served as a coldcut and tray style for a fall evening event, which was not at all what we had expected. I would not recommend this restaurant for any special event with the current staff and scheduling policies there.

This was my first time to Log Haven and we will definitely be back again. We went to Log Haven to celebrate our wedding anniversary because we heard it was a nice romantic place. Its a cozy cottage looking restaurant. Quiet and romantic indeed. The service was fantastic and the food delish!! We spent about $100 for the 2 of us plus the extra for tip, but it was worth it. We don't drink so the money was spent all on food :) I loved it!!

My husband and I went for our anniversary, and just fell in love (with the restaurant, we fell in love with one another a while back). Although I have heard of Log Haven for years, this was the first time I went. It is lovely in winter, with sparkling icicles, beautiful snow drifts, and a sense of being in a secluded, cozy cabin away from the elements. The service was good, the food was excellent, and we had a perfect seat near the fireplace. We are slightly "foodie" in our tastes, and the lobster and steak was all we hoped for - tender steak and delectable lobster. We tried the calamari and were impressed, and the creme brulee was also good. Altogether, the perfect venue for a romantic meal in the mountains. I look forward to returning and trying some of the more adventurous meals on offer.

I was very impressed with this restaurant. I took my girlfriend for a very romantic night and later on proposed to her. This is one of the few high class establishments in Northern Utah. The food presentation was excellent the taste was wonderful. The price was that of a high class restaurant. Will be back for a 2nd time. By the way she said YES! Thank you for an excellent experience and will be back for a "second date" but this time with my wife not girlfriend!

There are not enough superlatives to describe our experience at the Log Haven. Thank you all for a wonderful night. The return of Chef Jones we were told has, in the staff's minds, bettered the experience. having never dined here we cannot say. But, his menu is exquisite with something for everyone. The tastes were well blended. Presentation unreal. The service is top of the line. We were not rushed to our table but were able to enjoy a cocktail by the beautiful fireplace while our son enjoyed viewing the memorabilia scattered around the restaurant and its entrance area. Did we forget to mention that the wonderful food, services, etc., were all enjoyed while the Log Haven was on generator power. Our trip from NC to UT will be remembered from the evening we spent with all of you in your beautiful restaurant. We will come back to see the waterfall lit up next time we are in Salt Lake. 5 star!

What was once one of the premier dining experiences in Utah has become an over priced banquet hall. When Log Haven opened in the mid 90's it was wonderful, everything was fresh and unique, now it's sad and contrived. Maybe they should take a clue from Millcreek Inn and do one thing right instead of two things poorly. Fine dining they are not.

Went to Log Haven's Dog Days of Summer last night. Fabulous meal and service. They went out of their way to treat us and our dog very well. The setting was beautiful, food wonderful and we were able to watch the "floor show" of our dog and another dog have fun running around, chasing each other and wrestling. We will definitely go back.

Thank you so much for all your hard work & helping with countless details and decisions! Everything was absolutely perfect! We planned everything in the winter and had to trust you on what it would be like...the pictures don't do it justice! None of our guests could get over the beauty of it all! We're still hearing about how wonderful the scenery was. Thanks again!

An incredible restaurant. What a find!

Enjoyed crab cake appetizer, pan roast rabbit for entree. My new favorite! Rabbit was melt in your mouth and the polenta/mushroom accompaniment ? wow. Tried several other items with friends ? salmon, bison, pasta ? all excellent.
Delectable key lime cheesecake and chocolate tart. Great vibe in the restaurant ? amazing views. Perfect service, efficient, gracious and not pretentious. Extensive wine list ? it just gets better and better. Ask for patio seating near the waterfall. Go ? visit ? be amazed.

My Friend and I dine out together once per month, we take turns choosing the restaurant. Friday night 5/23/08 Log Haven was her choice. The ambiance was amazing, our view incredible and the food divine. We had a wonderful time. The staff was professional and all lent to an amazing experience. I would recommend this establishment to anyone and plan on taking my husband for Father?s Day.

My husband and I shared our first date at Log Haven over 6 years ago and recently returned to celebrate our anniversary. What use to be a fabulous dining experience has turned out to be a huge disappointment in service, menu, and quality of food. The manager himself was extremely rude when asked to open the bottle of wine we brought and our server did not know the menu, behaving very 'plastic' during the entire evening. When we did get our food it honestly tasted terrible. Log Haven use to be such a romantic, delicious fine dining choice and now I would only go to enjoy the waterfall - eat somewhere else.

I was referred to this restaurant as the place for dining in Salt Lake. Web-site has nice photos - but it is eye-popping in person. Log cabin atmosphere with waterfall views. The food is spectacular - not over complicated, stuffy - but approachable, solid and cutting-edge cuisine. I visited with several friends and we passed our dishes around with elation at the different flavors and styles. We will be back whenever we are in town! The server was knowledgeable and professional. Variety of wines represented on their wine list. I loved that its ambiance was comfortable and we did not have to be formally dressed. There were several in our party and the timing of our three courses was perfect. One person has special dietary needs and was accommodated beautifully by the chef. I recommend the fried calamari, bison and the creme brulee. It truly is a must for Utah - unbelievable views, outstanding menu, and top-notch service.

Last Saturday, March 1st, 2008, I celebrated my thirtieth birthday by dining at Log Haven. Prior to this meal, I had read many favorable reviews of thisrestaurant and was very eager to try it. Let me start by saying, the entire experience was extremely disappointing.

Our server, who proclaimed on multiple occasions, ?I?m a professional,? was anything but. We ordered mussels which smelled so awful they should have never left the kitchen. When we brought this to our server?s attention, we had to argue with her as she questioned our judgment. I have never had mussels that smelled so terrible. Our entrees ranged from lackluster at best to just plain inedible at worst. My mother ordered the beef cheeks which she described as little more than beef with gravy. My girlfriend ordered the rabbit which she said was good but the polenta tasted like it came from a tube. I had the seared diver scallops which were, in point of fact, extremely bland. The pasta was slightly over cooked and chorizo lacked flavor. But, the worst was my father?s Cornish game hen which was so tough on the outside and dry on the inside he was unable to eat it! For dessert, my mother ordered the lemon custard tart which was so sweet, after each having a taste, the four of us could not finish.

After much prodding by friends I tried Log Haven 5 years ago. The service was terrible and the food was less than thrilling. After hearing from friend that the service had improved and the food was great I decided to try it again. With an open mind I gave it a try. This time the service was slightly better. Atleast the waitress did not insult us this time. The food however had not improved. The concepts were interesting but the execution was poor. The sauces were not tight and flavorful. They either had too much liquor or too much salt. If you like ambiance this is a good place, but beware the food and service are greatly lacking.

Ate here last week and was wowed! The food was terrific including the free beginning taste from the chef. The server was professional and very knowledgeable and let us dine at our leisure...no rush out to turn the table here. We sat by the fireplace and took a walk around the grounds to enjoy the waterfall and the enormous icicles. I would love to come back here in the summer and dine outdoors. This was like a min-vacation just a few minutes away from downtown Salt Lake City. I will return.

I am a frequent diner at this restaurant - I bring colleagues to Log Haven every month. For my last visit I had invited several friends and ended up with a party of eleven. There was high energy throughout the entire table due to the expert handling of the server, Jack and the management. We tried five appetizers - that included the kobe beef, calamari, mushrooms, duck confit and the halibut cheek. They were incredible - my personal favorite was the halibut cheek - melt in your mouth fish with saffron risotto. Wow. I enjoyed the seasonal fish for dinner which was a pacific seabass - but tried several other dishes. Bison cooked perfectly. I know my choice for next meal will be the hankerchief pasta - the flavors were unique and tasty. For dessert, I always struggle over the lemon tart or the coffee cake - but with 10 other friends - we were able to enjoy the complete dessert menu. It may have been the oohs and aahs and praises from my associates that account for this statement - but Log Haven you are the best that Salt Lake has to offer in ambiance, dining and service. Thank you!

Much of the reviews I have read regarding this restaurant lead me to believe that either they are fake or I came on a VERY bad day. The fact that the day I am speaking in reference to was Easter Sunday would lead me to believe that they would put their best foot forward.
I will say the only two things I did enjoy about the restaurant was the beautiful area it was located in and the pleasant service. However when one decides to eat out for Easter or any other night for that matter, they aren't so much concerned with the area as they are concerned about the food. The meal I had was terrible at best. Two others I dined with also agreed that their meal was worthless. For around $35.00 a plate you would expect something better than average.... but we were apparently wrong in assuming that. The portions were small and tasteless. The one word I heard uttered out of everyone's mouth over and over was bland. I couldn't agree more. I almost felt embarrassed for the waitress as she would bring us these miniature meals.
Not to break away for the small portion trend, when someone I was with asked for a extra roll, we were told that it "May be hard with all the people eating at the restaurant" that day. Wow. I guess the restaurant was not expecting to recieve many customers on Easter???
The dessert reminded me of a potluck party with the cupcakes (yes...cupcakes) seemed to be a large portion of the "dessert" we treated to. The kind of cupcakes you buy in a box at Albertson's and bring home and have for a 3 year old's birthday party.
There is always a feeling of dissatisfaction when you receive a bland, tasteless, and boring meal. That level of dissatisfaction grows when you realize you have spent over $35.00 for that meal. The dissatisfaction yet grows again when you realize that you are still hungry after you just had a Easter "dinner".
I will not be going back...... EVER.

I wrote a review of Log Haven, posted several posts below. After several years, I opted to try it again for Mother's Day. My opinion of this establishment has changed entirely! From the moment we walked in and they accomodated my elderly mother to a fairly close table, to the point where the valet delivered our car with meticulous timing, I could not fault anything. My flatiron steak with goat cheese tamale was scrumptious and the banana cream pie to die for. I do believe my previous encounter was an aberration and, when I'm wrong, I have to admit it. Log Haven is definitely worth the price and the drive. I will certainly be back the next chance I get!

Log Haven features wonderful food with a beautiful location. The menu changes and is always delicious, but it is not as good as some other restaurants as far as menu items are concerned. Go for the atmosphere--I was seated by the fire, and it made for a very romantic evening. The Oaxacan Cheese appetizer (not on the menu right now) was incredible, and I'm sad they removed it. Overall, the food is good enough to merit the prices, but it won't take your breath away.

'Luv this place. The duck is the best I ever had, so is the pork chop and the salmon. But, this place is not a steakhouse. They have a real chef here. Take advantage of his talents. We picked this place over all other restaurants in Utah for our wedding reception.

Log Haven is truly a find in Salt Lake. I dined with friends and so enjoyed our experience we didn't want to leave! Chef Jones' cuisine is remarkable. Flavor combinations are perfect and beautifuly displayed and of course delicious. We started with champagne and then Ian, their GM graciously suggested wines by the glass for our entrees. Our table was by a window that opened up and let the cool canyon air surround us. After dinner we strolled across the street to a rock waterfall. Log Haven is truly a superb experience in dining and atmosphere.

Possibly the best dining experience in the entire state. Great food, portions, ambiance, location....what's not to like! This is where I proposed to my wife.

I have snacked at fine and not so fine eateries all over N.America.More than any place I've ever eaten it does depend on the time of day, season, where you are seated and the wait person you enjoy or endure. The food is far better than average for UT,a place where the the most popular eatery is a chain I call CHOKARAMA.There are fewer gourmet types in all of UT than at South beach, for example. The Log' food has always been worth any irritation. The right season does beg you to enjoy the wonders of nature. If you are in Ut for more than changing planes,I would rate this a must try.

Pros: scenery, food, ambiance,if lucky

Cons: can be poorly seated, not always filling, careful when you go

The drive up the canyon to the restaurant sets the tone for a "getaway" dinner. Good food, can be very romantic.

while log haven is stunningly beautiful, i think the food has gone down hill. For the prices charged, the flavors should be better!

I, too, agree with the other review...in thinking that all of the good ratings must be from the owners of this restaurant. As we ordered, the waitress appologized for the size everything was going to be when we received it. The prices were OUTRAGEOUS! And the menu choices where awful, definitely not for the average diner. There was nothing on the menu that was 'normal'. I ordered a diet coke...it took forever to get a refill and then to find out they charged me for both drinks. Not very classy. I will not return. If you want a nice, classy, expensive dinner...go to La Caille. I have never been disappointed there. And I totally agree with the person who said something about the plastic patio furnature!!! At $135 for two (with no wine) I think they could do better!

My experiance to the Log Haven was not very good. The service was like something i would expect at Denny's but not at a so called elegant dining establishment. Overall the service was poor, the selection was slim to none and the food was very poor. The pasta i had was like something you would get out of a tv dinner. It was actually some of the worst i have had, it was very very dry. The setting i would have to say was the only decent part of the night. The trees were snow covered, icicle's were hanging over the roof's, that i would have to say was one decent part of the night. But every place has a day where there service is'nt top notch, i just hope that for the log haven's sake it is not like that every night. Well at least there fire was warm.

Log Haven has delicious complex flavors and a fine menu. I ordered the filet mignon. Unfortunately I did have to send it back since I ordered it medium rare, and it came well done. The waitress handled the situation beutifully through. The crab cakes were well prepared, and the bread pudding was absolutely to DIE for. I highly recommend Log Haven.

We celebrated our anniversary here this year! What a wonderful place! We ate outside and I would highly recommend it if the weather is nice. The grounds are beautiful and the sound of the water nearby is very relaxing and peaceful. The food was outstanding! Wonderful soup and salad as well as dessert! We had the steak and tuna! A bit expensive, but for what you get (including service), it is well worth it!

This is a great place to dine, shows peoples mentality to nominate Sizzler, Tuccis, and Buco de crappo.
I bet the Chef actually speaks English and graduated from high school, along with working hard at some culinary schools. The owners have put some very hard work in seleting the menu, working on the facility, and training the staff.
Job very well done Log Haven!

Last night (Aug.19.02) my wife and I celebrated our 10th anniversary at the Log-Haven (at least that was "part" of the celebration ) The food was unique, well crafted, and absolutely delicious. We started with the Prawn appetizer, both had spinach salads, she had the lamb, and I had the seared tuna. Everything was superbly prepared. The only negatives were that the prawns in the appetizer were more like 35-40 count shrimp and there were only 4 and the bacon on the salad was a whole strip of bacon that required a knife to cut which was a bit of a put-off since the spinach was so delicate. Also, the table service was adequate, but definately not what you would expect at a restaurant of this caliber. Overall go here if you don't mind paying for quality cuisine and atmosphere...because you will pay...I don't mind and it was great! 8^)

The food was fantastic, the service was fun... our server was an entertainingly sarcastic animal rights activist, and the ambiance was incredible! The illuminated waterfall and bridge made it all the better!

We've eaten at Log Haven a half a dozen times. Recently, we had a fried oyster salad that was divine. The salad had a light vinagrette, surrounded with tasty strips of bacon, and topped with homemade potato chips. 8 fried oysters over a ranch dressing finished the plate off. My partner had the achiote shrimp and chorizo with a heavenly queso fresco risotto. I had the cappellini with seared scallops- a flavor packed entree with a silky, smoky tomato sauce, bits of sundried tomatoes, and toasted pine nuts. The entrees were more flavorful than they sound on the menu. I've been disappointed with the desserts (they aren't by a pastry chef but by the sous chef). The service can be slow and rushed. This is a BAD place to go when there is a convention in town (ask when you make reservations), as expense account groups get loud.

Sometimes I get the impression these so called "reviews" sound a little to much like advertisments written by the restaurants themselves. This is especially the case with Log Haven. True, the canyon is beautiful - but more so in a car with the windows down, not from the Log Haven patio which resembles that of a ski lodge throwing a barbeque. The plastic patio chairs and rather bland decor are not romantic or charming, nor are the denim uniforms of the servers. The dining room enviornment itself is rather clostrophobic and altogether absent of the intimacy that is so talked about. The food here is left wanting. Chef David Jones seems to want to hide every flavor with a nausiating amount of herbs and spices...so much so it is difficult to know what you are tasting. In fact, I think the only thing unseasoned was the canned whipped cream.

I guess it doesn't matter where you go, as long as you are with someone you love... but the Log Haven made a wonderful night magical. The gorgeous waterfalls and romantic atmosphere is the perfect place to gaze into the eyes of someone you love.

Log Haven is one of the most uniquely exquisite dining experiences I've had. The food was amazingly prepared and even more beautifully presented. I commend the kitchen and wait staff....they made the night even more memorable. If you're looking for a great place to celebrate an anniversary or other occasion with a loved one.....this is too good to pass up!

The beautiful background of Millcreek Canyon sets the tone for this restaurant's sophisticated cuisine. Built in the 1920s, the lodge is like a cozy, skier's hideaway, with nature playing the featured role both indoors and out. The menu…
