The gym itself is well equipped and the staff is very friendly but:

I would not recommend this Jordan Fitness gym in Halifax MA for drop-in child-care while you exercise. If you are planning on dropping off an infant, toddler or even a young child at this gym, I would google information about drop-in child-care first. I did not get written rules from this gym when I started working out there but I wish I had as I was told (verbally by the assistant at the desk) on my first day that the ratio was 1 child care provider for each 6 children in the room. When I questioned, a few days later, why there were 8 children with one adult in the room, I found out that they did not follow the ratio that she had quoted me as all drop-off child care is unlicensed in MA and there are no guidelines that they have to follow (about safety in the child care room.) On numerous occasions, there were 12 to 15 children with one adult in the room. Sometimes the adult at the desk would come in the room to sit in the doorway when they were asked to by the caregiver but then would need to leave to answer the phone etc. It is impossible for any caregiver, no matter how skilled and experienced, to safely care for so many infants, toddlers and children who are not school age yet.

When I was there, they offered care for babies as young as 6 months but allowed the older children to bring in all types of food. Some foods that are easily chewed by children ages 4 and older (who have back molars) can get caught in younger children??s throats and cause them to stop breathing. They have a table in the room for eating but it is too low to prevent younger children for reaching up to it and putting food that is not safe into their mouths. Food was often dropped on the floor, unknowingly by the children, creating a safety issue for the infants and toddlers crawling below. Children were allowed to bring in bags or kid??s pocket books filled with objects, creating safety issues as infants and toddlers had access to too-small toys, coins, balloons etc.

I brought up these issues with the owner, Patty, to no avail. I recommend looking up informative articles on line about how to choose your legally unlicensed gym childcare. There are local gyms that take precautions for the safety of the children that they are given the care of by not allowing anything to come into the room besides the child (and something to drink) and having a reasonable number of children per adult allowed. I hope this gym soon has written guidelines for safety, that they make the choice to follow, before any more accidents occur.

Jordan Fitness Center exceeded my expectations. Gym is clean, staff is super friendly and helpful, lots of classes that are great and free. Definitly the nicest health club around, not too crowded like other places I have tried.
