I am a freelance web programmer with a good deal of experience who was looking for some extra work in the KC area. DXD looked great from their website, but I was a little concerned after reading other reviews on citysearch. I had an initial meeting with these guys, and after that it was just shocking how bad they were at following through with... well, with anything!

From the sporadic, disjointed communications that followed, I got the distinct impression that the project lead was some poor guy who really wanted to do this kind of work, but was being given about 5x as much work as he should have been, and the cocky, arrogant co-founder with whom I also met seemed like a real slavedriver who clearly would have been happier just kicking back on his boat and reaping the rewards from his initial efforts. It's a very shoddily-run business-- client beware.

Kansas City is obviously not a huge market for advanced computer graphics and video editing and what not, so there is apparently room for a company of this low caliber to exist. It's disappointing that the most visible company in this sector is such a sham.

Pros: A good reel, a nice website, and a good medium-sized facility.

Cons: Awful management and unbelievably bad communications with contractors.

The review by animator1975 is not true. In fact, the owners have been knowingly running pirated software for over 5 years. Dimension X Design was busted by Autodesk in the summer of 2007 for having over 10 illegal licenses of Maya software. DXD had to pay thousands in licenses and fines. A simple phone call to the Autodesk piracy group can confirm the facts. My friend used to work there and he said the turnover rate is high, because the owners treat employees poorly don't have a clue to what they are doing. He said it took about 8 Maya animators a year to complete a few simple 9 min. cartoon animations. The work they do is cheesy After Effects and amateur animation from purchased 3D models. He said that the owners force the employees to sign a non-compete contract that prevents them from doing any animation, or similar work for a full year after working there! All fellow animators should seriously avoid DXD and look for a better company to work for.

Guess we should have read the reviews before hand. These people never returned our two phone calls over a week's period. Not recommended!

Please don't believe everything negative you read about this company. Word on the street is the person that wrote one of the reviews is a disgruntled employee that was fired. I heard the software piracy issue, was due to an employee using it and the owners were unaware of it. I've heard only good things about DXD and evidently the pay can't be that bad as they have at least 4 or 5 employees that have been there for years. I've seen the work they do and I think it's very impressive!! That company is growing leaps and bounds and is going nowhere but up!

Pros: Great animation and very good to their employees

A friend of mine used to work for DXD as an animator. He said they have been in trouble a couple of times for software piracy and other illegal deals. He also said the pay sucked. Animators beware!

Very poor customer support and are their services are over priced in comparison. Our emails and phone calls requesting changes for our company project were sometimes returned to us a week later. Our project was only 2 months worth of work at best, but took DXD 5 months! I would not recommend doing business with this company to anyone.
