I've been eating from this family since there first location on Merriam Drive. We used to order at least 3 times a week and Fred was always prompt to get it to us. They are some of the most authentic reciepes I've found in KC. There new resterant on 87th Street is very nice place and I've also ordered from the 47th Street location. If you want real mexican food check this place out and the prices are unreal compared to fake tex-mex resturants.

Great food, great salsa, mediocre service. Carryout is especially hard to predict. If it weren't for the food being excellent, we wouldn't go back. They have had a few years to get the time management issues down, and they still have big challenges.

I especially like the authetic style tacos (lengua and barbacoa are my favorite).

Tried calling in a order and they never answer the phone (merriam location). Ordered a delivery order and few months back and it was never delivered. We only live 2 miles from them. What a JOKE!!!

Cons: Service at it's worst!!

Worst mexican food I've ever eaten. Would rather eat taco bell. You could get better food from one of those buses that are drive around kitchens.

Tarahumara has the best Mexican food, and unique entree's compared to any other Kansas City Mexican Restaurant. The price is low and the food quality and quantity is high! It's a don't miss! They even have homeade tamales that you can buy by the dozen to take home and freeze.

We have been going to Tarahumara for over a year now, and cannot find the sopes they serve anywhere else. Given that Mexican food is Mexican food, these sopes are phenomenal. They are little corn pouches stuffed with carnita meat, lettuce, sour cream, and cheese. I have even tried to make them at home, but they are way too labor intensive (the pouches are hard to make). Needless to say, whenever we want Mexican food we don't call anywhere else. Jose Peppers, no thanks! Give me Tarahumara! The decor of the restaurant is intimate and friendly, the food comes fast, and they deliver (hard to find in Johnson County). This is a small business that needs loyal returning customers and I will definitely be one as long as I live here and they keep me happy and full! Highly recommended if you are looking for authentic family-friendly Mexican food.

I went to this restaurtant shortly after I read the review from one of my fellowcitysearchers. See, am ALWAYS skeptical about my mexican food and had come the conclusion that I was never going to find good mexican food in the Kansas City area, but boy was I WRONG. Like the previous reader, I took was floored when I walked into this hidden treasure. From the outside you don't imagine what is inside, you just see a plain building and don't even know what a great food you are missing out on. The food is GREAT to say the least, and the service is also good. Since it is a family owned business, the waitress the served my table happened to be one of the daughters of the owners, she was very nice and prompt with our table. The music was so soothing and the whole place is just so welcoming. They have the best chips and sauce that I have ever stumbled upon and that's just the beginning of one's adventure once you step inside the door. I order the Puerco en Salsa Verde and it was to die for, I also a Chile con Queso and I can honestly say that there was not one thing that my family ordered that wasn't good. We also took a dozen tamales home because we had them at the restaurant and they were so fluffy and had just the right amount of meat and chile on them. I DEFINITELY recommend this place and think that all the REAL mexican food eaters out there should go and try them, I know that you'll be hooked just like me and my family.

Pros: The service, The Food, everything.....

I was extremely impressed upon stumbling into this strip mall establishment with it's natural wood decor and impressive bar. A quick look at the menu and I realized this was no tex-mex, this was the real stuff, family recipes passed down through generations. This means no espinaca dip, but there's a great combo of cheese and chorizo instead! Everything on the menu is made from scratch, from the breakfast burritos, chile rellanos, sopes, tortas, tamales, and several pork dishes. The tamales were my favorite as they had a very light, almost cake texture mixed with an impressively hot shredded pork filling, delicious! Give this place a try because it has a much more unique menu than most other Mexican restaurants in the area, they have great prices and service, and it's a locally owned establishment - you'll most likely have a conversation with Fred!
