Ratings_icons Gateway Market is where to get Picket Fence Milk

Kelly B. | insider Insider | Rank: 29,139

Very helpful staff. Great foccacia (sp?) bread!! Fun selection of cheeses- will give out samples! We buy their Picket Fence Milk weekly there, the only place I know of to buy non-homogenized milk.

Ratings_icons Gateway Market is certainly an option for food in Des Moines.

Gateway Market is probably my third choice (out of three) when shopping for organic, natural, or local foods. They're a bit pricey, and they seem to have more of a focus on "foodie" foods, many of which are also available at stores like Target.
However, their cafe is excellent!! A bit pricey, again, but yummy.

Ratings_icons Gateway Market is great

I love this place. It can get a bit pricey, but the selection is great and I like the difference from a regular grocery store. There is also a great bakery.

Gateway is a unique combination of a trendy restaurant and an upscale grocery store, near downtown Des Moines. The grocery has an excellent selection of hot foods, cheeses, meats, salad bar, soup bar and very fresh sushi for take out. In addition there is an appealing fine array of organic and regular fruits and vegetables, wines, pastas, teas, and many specialty items. While the food is a bit pricey, the hot food bar is half-price after 8:00 pm making it a real bargain. The restaurant food is always fresh and the menu quite varied. In the winter the touch of gas fire place adds coziness. The restaurant is often filled at noon, with fewer people there in evening. Once you go there, you will find yourself returning.
