I rent from National all over the country and in Des Moines regularly (3 times in the past month) and the one in Des Moines never has the class of car I have reserved by the time I get there. They never honor the benefits associated with being an "Executive" customer and the lady behind the desk is far from friendly or accommodating. I will likely rent from Enterprise going forward, same reward program, different service level.

Great customer service. However, my flight arrived late that day (8:30pm) and I didn't have much of a car selection to choose from. The only vehicle available for rent was a big, gas-guzzling Chevy Suburban.

I use National for my business travel because it allows me executive status where I can pick my vehicle and get into my rental quickly. This service is not available in Des Moines. I was going to be charged 40.00 extra for any upgrade that I would normally just pick myself for no charge. Waiting in line for a car takes forever. When I got the car there was no ice scraper. This is winter in the midwest so had to buy my own. They did give me a small discount for the scraper so that was a plus. Tank was not clear full. When I got the bill it stated we hope you liked your free upgrade, however there was no upgrade. Disappointed in this particular National Rental site.

Car was a Ford Fusion. Since DSM has no Emerald Club it does take way longer than it should especially since they only have one person working the desk. Car windows were filthy on the inside and the gas tank was not full. Tank was approx 2/8th off of full. Desk Employee was extremely friendly and apologized for the long wait. Upon return there was no turn in representative in the drop off which means another wait at the inside airport desk for my turn in. Still prefer National but when there is no Emerald Club Lot it really can make the rental time slow.

I have always liked National Car Rental, consistently great service. This time I flew to Des Moines for a family reunion. Upon arrival, the Full Size sedan reserved was not available, so National upgraded me to a Minivan. Perfect for hauling people and food around for the party.

The only hiccup was the bill ... the printer jammed when I returned the car so I did not see the charges until later. I was billed the full rate for the minivan, not my discounted rate for the sedan. All was fixed with a quick phone call. My credit card was credited within 3-4 days.

National ... I'll be back. Thanks.

The line to pick up my car was painfully slow - the Hertz line next to us processed 10 to 12 customers in the time it took to process one client at National - it didn't matter if you were Emerald club either as there was only one line and only one person serving customers. By the time I was served all other car rental counters were long since empty, it was dark and quiet... The car itself was fine (though no "choice" was available - so not as advertised). It was clean and had no functional issues. Returning post rental was speedy and efficient. One issue: I hate the "bundled second key", mainly because it's so inconvenient to put them in your pants pocket. However, I ran into a safety issue with them this time: turning into my hotel parking lot the "key and tag bundle" was snagged by the steering wheel and pulled the ignition to off! I've never had this happen - but was able to duplicate it by flipping the extra key and tag upwards, then turning the wheel 180 degrees. This is not safe (Chevy Equinox).

The cars are always clean and well maintained. Even with an Emerald club membership it still takes too long to rent the car. At times the counter is understaffed and the lines can be rather long especially for the Des Moines, IA airport.
