I contacted Ames Automotive for the first time 2-7 by phone to see if I could get them to look at my 98 Neon. It had blown a heater hose. I wanted to have all the hoses and the belt changed since it had been at least 3 years since any
of them had been changed.
The guy I talked told me to bring it in, I did so on 2-8.
The Neon had been leaking coolant on the way in and started to overheat so I parked at Village Inn. I drove back to Ames Automotive with my fianc in a borrowed vehicle and advised that I was stuck at Village Inn. The guy at the desk was the same guy I talked to on the phone and he offered to tow the Neon. I agreed. He said the normal charge was $70 (ouch!) but he would tow it for less since it was so close (Village Inn is just west of Duff on Lincolnway near Lincoln Center and Ames Automotive is just East of Duff at 513 E. Lincolnway).
He advised that he was so swamped that he would not know anything until afternoon the next day, 2-9. 2-9 came and went with no call. 2-10 I call and talk to guy #2, the partner. He does not seem to know what is going on with vehicle since he tells me that it has a leaky hose that needs replaced. He also wants to change the spark plugs so it will run better. I told him I knew it had a leaking hose, that's why I brought it there. I asked again that they change the hoses and belt advising I would change the plugs myself when it wasn't so cold outside. I left my contact information with guy#2 at this time.
I hear nothing from them for days so I went in 2-15. They have now had the car a full week. Guy #2 is at the counter and I tell him which car I am there for. He again recommends spark plugs. I advise that I can change them myself and ask that they change the hoses and the belt. He starts making phone calls while I'm standing there. Apparently they had not even started calling for parts yet. I stuck around for a bit but did not have the time to wait for him to complete the estimate. I wrote my name, vehicle info, what was to be done, and number on a piece of paper and left.
Finally, 2-17 I get a phone call from Guy #1 with an estimate, just over $438!! I asked why and he advised that the tow was $40. They also went ahead and included services I did not ask for in the estimate including flushing the fuel injectors (a scam- I can spend $2.99 on a fuel additive to do that) and a flush and fill of the radiator. They had also forgotten at this point that I asked repeatedly for the belt to be changed, it was not included in this estimate. I asked him to deduct the fuel injector flush, as I did not want it. Taking off that and the flush and fill on the radiator still left me at $300- TO CHANGE 4 HOSES!!! 8 screw on hose clamps and MAYBE $50 worth of hose. I asked at this point that he just change the one hose that was leaking and advised I would bring my own antifreeze to fill the radiator. I hear nothing 2-18 or 2-21. I drove in late afternoon 2-21 to take the car whether it is done or not with a $100 ceiling in mind for charges owed given the work done and the run around.
The car is done, (just finished when I got there) 2 weeks later, with one hose changed in the end. They charge me $128.27 for it. The tow was $40 and they charge me $16.99 for the hose (pre-formed upper and lower radiator hoses can run close to that, but it's pretty pricey for some by-the-foot priced hose!!) That leaves about $75 for labor. Again- FOR ONE HOSE!!
I drove the vehicle home (approx. 15 miles) to work and back once (approx. 25 miles) and to pick up my kids in southeast Marshall County (approx. 80 miles). By the time I had completed the last trip the Neon had leaked all of the coolant from the same area and needed the radiator refilled.
Ames Automotive has very poor management. The people answering the phone do not communicate with each other so they do not know what has already been discussed or what services have been agreed upon or asked for. They try to push services that are not asked for, and I'm sure that many people who do not work on their own
vehicles fall for everything they recommend. They even include the extra services that you didn't ask for in your estimate- for your convenience!!
Fuel injector flush. The product the injectors meter out is filtered several times, the last filtration done between the tank and the injector. The injectors exist in an environment where the gasses are closely monitored by your car's electronic control module. They are not exposed to the harsh conditions created by combustion. The person selling fuel injector flushing might as well be offering to change your muffler belt or top off your blinker fluid!
Ames Automotive is the mechanic your dad warned you about. They are out to make a buck and will try to push you into as many ??services? as they can. Please don't go there!!!
