I LOVE Primo Deli. My husband and I are avid cooks and foodies from SF and NYC. We were meandering around town on our way to the Big Y (of course, our favorite activity: planning and preparing our next meal) and looking for a delicious pork and beans burrito (figuring there must be a good downhome place hidden in a deli where the mexicans eat the real deal good home cookin' food): we wanted to find THAT place. I had been curious about the 'Hispanic and American Deli', but imagining a different place: a place like the delis in the Mission District of SF that sell Mexican foods (caso fresco, mole sauce, etc) and that have an ordinary deli but also amazing burritos.
We walked into Primo Deli to discover INCREDIBLE Dominican Food. First, we were greeted so hospitably and I was already drooling over the many stews of oxtail, chicken, slow cooked pork ribs in red sauce, different beans, rices (not one but 2! yellow rices)....the list goes on and on. Normally, I am dying to try about 4 of these: and my host read my mind, he insisted we DO try anything I wanted. When I asked the same to my fave Dominican Joint in East Harlem, albeit the food was amazing but the service less kind: they laughed at me and said 'No!' and laughed again when i considered mixing chicken stew with espeghetti.
At PRIMO DELI, they insisted i try the different stews....as many as I liked. My husband and I settled for our top 3: costillas de puerco (roast pork), slow cooked baby pork rib stew in a delicious tomato-based sauce, and chicken stew. All were INCREDIBLY delicious!!! Then (oh, I didn't catch the gentleman's name), after choosing the cooked baby pork rib stew as our entree of the night, we were served an incredibly large heaping plate (literally dripping off the sides) of yellow rice with pork mixed in (yum!!!) and stew and beans on top. How delicious!! Heavenly.... That plus the bottled pepsi (you know, the one that is made with sugar instead of the American corn syrup version that does not taste half as good): this meal made my day. And my husband's. We were beaming afterwards, and even before getting the tab. Unable to move after eating such generous portions, we were greeted with a 7 dollar tab. Not kidding! 1 dollar pepsi and heaping plate of food that we could hardly finish and we are renknowned as very good eaters. I could not believe it! Was is 1985?? How could we eat so well for such great value?
If you want to eat one of the most delicious meals of your life (and I've eaten at 5 Star Michelin Restaurants such as Gary Danko said to be the single best restaurant in San Francisco) and in the most hospitable, cozy place and for the best value you can imagine, I would recommend highly PRIMO DELI. What a treat and pleasant surprise!
