I came to Perbacco on a date and was really enjoying to food. Every dish that was tried was pulled together nicely and presented well. Our waiter was very attentive. Good wine list. The only problem: I was looking for the bathroom (downstairs and around the corner) but had no idea where it was. I asked one of the servers that was walking by. He insisted on walking me to it "because it's hard to find" then asked if the guy I was with was my date. After he heard that he was, he still asked if I would give him my number. It kind of messed up the dinner.

I love having business meetings here, since it is right behind my office. All the food is excellent, the portions are just the right size, and ingredients always fresh and seasonal.

I really wanted this review to be better and perhaps the lower rating is due to these high expectations but there were far too many things that were average at best with my experience with the meal.

Perbacco delivers upscale Italian beautifully. Our waiter was from a young guy from Venice who was incredibly friendly and attentive, understood the menu and wine list very well and recommended great pairings with our dishes. Braised lamb shank was fabulous. My wife had the ricotta gnocchi which was good but not a standout. Beet salad was fresh and good - like it is at most great SF restaurants. Definitely a good date spot despite it's financial district location.

Pasta was cold when it was supposed to be hot, hamachi was waaay too salty, pork was just decent. I really don't get Michael Bauer and his followers....seems like just a bunch of hype for no good reason. Ambiance was nothing special.

I want to be fair. but, it seems when a new restaurant opens it is a given it will be busy. So, one cannot judge how good a place is by how busy it is. With this said. Perbacco did not impress. The food was OK. But, the service was bad.
