AJ Java may not have the perfect cup of coffee, but it is a rock solid member of the community right across the street from beautiful Peninsula Park. I am grateful to have them nearby.

I don't really drink coffee, but I drink Chai and the chai here is ok. It tasted a little bitter, but it may be the brand they use. It's a little dirty behind the counter, but the customer area is clean. I'd probably go here again in a pinch but it won't be my first choice.

Compliments to Eleza and all that she and her staff have done with the business! What she represents (honest business, caring of local concerns, organic, free trade, and giving young adults a healthy chance to gain some good business experience) is truly commendable. The only criticism I have is having Chris Mayther at the AJ Rail on Wednesday nights. His reputation for taking advantage of/using people seems in direct conflict with what Eleza is all about. Otherwise, the coffee is great!

I'm not a huge coffee snob. Let me say that up front. I'll take Starbucks if it's available, and prefer Stumptown, but not enough to cross town to get a latte. AJs has a fantastic spot across from the park, and the interior is comfy, but the coffee drinks are just plain bad. Even the coffee the other day was so watery it was difficult to swallow. AJ--please train your workers to make real espresso drinks! Send them to Stumptown, send them to Starbucks....even send them to a coffee cart in the mall...but teach them how to make a good drink. I want to make your place my number one spot for coffee, but I just can't until you put an ounce of effort into taste. Sorry.

Pros: Close to the park. Tea is hard to mess up. Muffins are passable.

Cons: Coffee bad. Espresso drinks worse.
