Rude owner...non-recyclable plastic gelato cups (it's 2010!!) that make the gelato taste like plastic. 4 bad experiences. Would not recommend unless you are a completely oblivious yuppie.

My favorite restaurant for a nice, quiet, delicious meal. The chef even specially fixed a paninni for me that isn't on the dinner menu! Great, friendly service and super good food. Also, a nice setting on Tanner Springs Park with non-hassle parking nearby.

A friend of ours got us a gift card from this establishment, but when we tried to use it a few months later, they claimed that there was only a $1.35 balance on the card which we had never used and our friend had paid $30 for. The owner said, That's all that's on the card, I'm sorry, someone must have used the card, even though that's clearly not the case. What a scam. I guess the owner values $28.65 more than his reputation. We'll never go here again if that's the way they treat their customers.

Pros: Good location

Cons: Management

I am so impressed with their new menu items. I have tried several now, breakfast, lunch and dinner and I have not had one bad meal. This is my favorite restaurant in the Pearl. It's not just desserts anymore they are a full item menu restaurant with lot's to choose from.

Happy Hour too - try their meatballs with Marinara!!

For breakfast I recommend one of their omelets or the French Toast!

Five Stars!!

I support all of the previously written POSITIVE reviews and then some. During, what seemed like, the worst of the recession I worried we would lose this privately owned local business. I had days when I stopped and made a purchase even though I didnt really want anything. I felt like the owner was so glad to see his people still coming through the door and it was one more dime to keep him afloat.
The mega giants take our money. you dont know the people and you dont get the same service all the while they dont much fear the doors slamming and locking as our private owners do.
In these days when busineses are trying to crawl back out from the crush of the recession- cut them a break. Your this or that is smaller etc.. it probably has to be so they can make ends meet and get themselves going again.
Please continue to bring your business here as I dont want to lose this business and have to go elsewhere. I hope you dont either.

This WAS my favorite place. I remember eating here about six months ago the food was delicious light and appetizing. I've always ordered the Honey crepes and their other desserts are always fantastic. My usual honey crepes came in a large plate with three crepes and a light berry sauce but the filling was light and slightly sweetened.

Last night I went with a couple of my friends to visit again. This time when i ordered it my crepes it came in a tiny plate and I only got two crepes cut in half, the filling was so thick, heavy and sweet that I felt it almost clogging my heart. I only ate part of it. All the desserts were $8 or more, it use to be only $7, and the portions are smaller and the dessert is lower quality than back then. I won't go back again.

UPDATE 8/10/2010:

Went with my friends again for gelato. This time we wanted to try one of the flavors. The server told us to SHARE a tasting spoon so they can save spoons. That is the most unsanitary thing a waiter has ever told me before. We got our gelato and the waiter just had this nasty look on his face. Like he was doing something against his will. There was no one else in the restaurant. Needless to say he greeted us with the nasty attitude, gave us nasty service and we left and he still had that nasty look on his face. Really wants customers to go away.

Pros: Good atmosphere and coffee

Cons: Prices raised, portions got smaller, food quality went down.

We go to Via almost daily! They have great coffee the best construction of a latte or mocha you will ever find! Much better than Starbucks, and you don't walk out smelling like coffee beans.
Your latte will be consistently good because the same person will make it each time, the owner, unless you come at night then you may be more interested in the wine or the gelato -several flavors always something new and amazing!. Good breakfasts panini's, home made pastries and soups are really great! The desserts are amazing! It's a great place to hang out in the evening with friends or collegues. The owner know most of his customers by name and won't hesitate to introduce you to someone that you may find very interesting, so it makes for great networking. One of the few places in Portland with TOP KNOTCH Service! They are very attentive and ALWAYS thank you before you leave, which is a dying art in this town it seems. It's located across from Tanner Springs park so it can be romantic to take a walk with a date in the eve to see the fish etc.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE! It's the BEST place to grab a latte in Portland by far!

Living nearby, I had often walked past Via Delizia and in my mind dismissed the idea of patronizing it because it looked like it would be an expensive, trendy rip off suitable for the pretentiously inclined Pearl District. One day recently with a friend we went there for coffee. I had recently heard that the coffee was good.
We had lattes and then later breakfast. The lattes are the best I've come across! The service is the best I've ever encountered in Portland, measuring up favorably to good service elsewhere as well. The owner, Alex, strives extra diligently for exceptional service and has trained his staff to perfection!

They have a very tasty homemade coffeecake to go with one's coffee. The breakfast omelets are good; and my friends pasta dish was good.
The gelatos are excellent.

An amazing place to go for dessert and it looked as though they had a variety of delicious looking sandwiches although I was there for dessert only. Great gelatto and they are not stingy about letting you try everything and anything you want, outstandingly thick and rich coffee. Super nice and knowledgable staff, gotta give this place a try and I think you will be hooked like me.

I ALWAYS get a latte here after I see my hairdresser next door at iolite. Not only are they too perfectly convenient to stop in and see, but they always deliver the most perfect latte with a perfect compliment! The staff here are so friendly, the atmosphere is great for any time of day, with friends or just reading a magazine. Thank you for the awesome pick-me-ups and for all your smiles!

Ive been going to Via Delizia for a couple years now and all I can say is that I LOVE IT! I feel that everytime I come in it gets better and better! The food is soooooo yummy and the service is wonderful! The desserts are out of this world glamorous! When my boyfriend and I asked if we could thank the chef, our server said no problem! It was such a treat being able to talk to the chef who was very polite and also a sharp cookie! She, along with our charming server, made our last trip a memorable one! I would highly recommend the roasted garlic fettuccine for dinner and the bloood orange crepes for dessert!

Cons: parking is a tough one-but so is everywhere else in the area!

We absolutely loved this restaurant, we started with the Bruschetta with Mango & black bean and tomato & lemon on crustini - FABULOUS!

Our salads and pasta dishes were wonderful and the service was incredible.

We splurged on one of the desserts with gelato (sinful)!

I would recommend this restaurant for great food, great wine, incredible gelato and and A+ for the service. We will go back!

This restaurant is a favorite of my wife and I when we get the chance to stop in. We live out of town so we don't often get into downtown. We are both vegetarian and find they offer some selections that accommodate us. The quality of their salads, panini and desserts are excellent and attractively presented. The panini is perfectly cooked and not too greasy. They make their own gelato from scratch and offer many flavors. The atmosphere is great with the olive tree inside, especially after dark.

We visited recently on a Saturday night and found the staff attentive and provided us very good service. One of the staff stopped by for a question which turned into a lengthy and friendly conversation. She turned out to be the owner and we really enjoyed getting acquainted and learning about the background of the restaurant. We highly recommend you give this restaurant a try if you haven't been to it. We will definitely be going back in the future.

Every time I go to Via Delizia I love it a little more. Their coffee is wonderful, hot chocolate is even better. The gelato alone is worth the trip. The staff is very nice, professional but not in that snotty way a lot of Pearl District restaurant staff can be. The prices are great, staff is very sweet and the giant Olive Tree makes this place a standout!

I attended Via Delizia last night for the first time...it was recommended by a friend of mine. I really enjoyed myself and so did my husband. The service was cheerful and gave great suggestions. The atmosphere was wonderful and the food was well proportioned and excellent quality. I'm looking forward to going back and bringing some girlfriends, maybe we'll try some of their wines next time.

I love going to this place, I have been ever since I moved to the city a year ago. Built a nice relationship with some of the servers but yesterday my friend returned from the marines and he had not eaten restaurant food in three months. We decided to go to Via Delizia, my friend was in uniform and we sat on the patio. Ordered food and waited. Five other groups sat next to us outside and all of them ordered, recieved food, and payed before we even recieved our food. Probably took about an hour, the waitress said that there was a mix up and the food was coming. But truthfully, it was obvisous that she just forgot to put the order in. I know that there are mistakes in the industry and it happens. The fact that my friend was in uniform we could not make a big deal about it. But what really frustrated me was that fact that there was no apology, no discount, no offered coffee while we waited for an hour. I just think that the potential of of the restaurant is too great to be having poor service. It was very unfortunate, love the atmosphere and most of the staff but it seems like they are just not experience with handling issues and the owner is too cheap to make compensations.

We've been going to Via Delizia since they opened. Breakfast, lunch and desserts of gelato. We initially loved the atmosphere of the olive tree, the lanterns that hang from it, the faux brick wall making you feel like your in a courtyard.... but they don't play music or anything and ALL YOU HEAR IS THE COOLER and the staff banging around pots in back. This has happening for months and months now.... and I've even nicely hinted each time how great some light music would be, and they respond 'uh, yeah, it would", that's the end of it... next time we went, nope. We have passed along MANY recommendations to friends, coworkers, out of town guests, etc. because of the unique interior... and honestly, they even commented on how oddly loud the cooler was with customers seeming to talk quietly under it's annoying hummmmm.

So, I think tonight will be our last time until we hear they've done something about it. It's really too bad, as the food is good. I guess I'd also recommend the staff take the extra step to light the candles after they notice it (even making comment to the customer... hmmf, guess I should light that"... "that would be great" but then... nothing. Oh well.

I hate to say this because I love their gelato....BUT past reviewers are so right. The service here is just weird and I think it is not the servers fault, but the owner/managers fault. My husband and I decided to dine in @ a table. We ordered an appetizer (a capresse) and two entrees. The appetizer arrived with no plates (as usual) and we dripped our vinegar and oil on the table. Then our entrees arrived with a piece of bread. I asked my server for some vinegar and oil for the bread. She came back to the table apologetic stating that she could not give us any vinegar and oil. She expalined that the owner won't let mople do that and wants customers to order that as an appetizer. CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP!!! We did order an appetizer and that appetizer had vinegar and oil with it. We should have kept the plate and used that for our two little pieces of bread. We thought is was very weird and VERY bad customer service. Lighten up on the "rules" of your restaurant and let people enjoy this place.

I went to Via Delizia when they first opened. The owner was there and was very sweet and friendly. He was so excited about his gelato. He had us try almost every flavor before we decided. They have so many flavors to choose from and it is so good. They have something new to try every time I come in. The prices are very good and the decor in this place is so cool! It is made to look like it is an outdoor patio in Italy or something, complete with a giant olive tree growing out of the floor. It reminds me of Disneyland. They also have fabulous panini sandwiches. I always tell everyone I know to go in and check it out, and I make the trip in whenever I can. The only con is that I can't come in more often because I live so far away.

I have been going to Via Delizia off and on since the summer. I avoided it a lot during the summer because it was just too busy but as business slowed I started going more. I guess I have never been to happy with the service but I really loved the gelato. The other day however I went there with my husband and was told that we couldn't order our gelato at the counter then sit down with it but they wouldn't give me a valid reason and there was absolutely no one in the restaurant. So we decided to sit down and order and when we did it took them 10 min. just to take our gelato order then they took another 10 min to serve us. I found this to be extremely unnecessary since only one person walked in while we were waiting and there was two servers on shift. Its just rediculous that a place so cute and with such a great environment can have such bad service and I know it has a lot to do with the management making these desicions because well servers have told me that management doesnt want you to sit and eat gelato at the tables in the to-go cups. I think management needs to re-evaluate their business practices or they will loose more customers like myself and my husband.

This place was alot nicer than i imagined. It is a small but very nice quaint bistro, maybe 12 or so tables inside. Small dark tables and chairs with crisp white tablecloths, small candles. Even the menu's were cool looking, they were like clipboards but cooler looking. Wonderful humungous olive tree inside with a small bench underneith it. It reminded me of being outside a french cafe. The wall is made out of natural greyish flagstones with make believe windows with shutters. Underneith those windows there were flower boxes with hanging red silk geraniums. It was not cheesy at all, very creative. I loved the look of the place. Its in a very nice upscale part of Portland. Surrounded by very artsy and modern condos outside. Anyway, i ordered the pumpkin cheesecake, and my husband ordered the apple crisp (that's not what it was called) It had a fancy name i can't remember. Oh my gosh the desserts looked so pretty i hated to eat it! Very delicious too. I ate very slowly because the portions are soooo small. My pumpkin cheesecake with spice gelato was $8.95!! The pumpkin cheesecake was small and round and about the size of my small palm. The gelato was the size of a ping pong. Very yummy but very small. The expresso is served in cute expresso cups with a cream design on top. The waitress was nice, not snobby at all. We went on a Saturday night. It was not crowded and very quiet inside. In short, great place to try at least once. Pricey but the atmosphere makes up for it. We will go back again and try the dinners.

Pros: wonderful ambience

Cons: Pricey for the desserts

My wife and I went here on Valentines Day evening to relax, enjoy the multi-course dessert, and catch up with some friends who we haven't seen for a couple of years. The evening was a wonderful experiece. The ambiance of this special place and the added background guitar player provided a memorable evening. We really enjoyed the pace of delivery for the desserts. It allowed us plenty of time to visit and enjoy ourselves which we did. The desserts themselves were very good and were presented in a very attractive manner. On this particular night, I really enjoyed the coffee which I believe to be the best in Portland. The service was outstanding. The host presented a long stem rose to each of the ladies in our party at the end of the evening. Again, this was a special touch and presented in a very attrative packaging. The music, the atmosphere, the service, the desserts, and the time with our friends made for a memorable evening. We will be back for more of the same... To the staff at Via Delizia, I want to add my thanks to you for helping me communicate to my valentine of 42 years what a special person she is!

After reading the reviews I was interested in this great place, and ended up walking by it while looking for a martini bar. Me and my boyfriend stopped in and we loved it! Its was really romantic and cozy. Not too big and not too small of a place. It was very intimate and we loved the tree with candles inside. The desserts looked amazing and the prices were great. We shared the chocolate fondue and it was really good. We went on a Saturday night at around 10:30 and I was suprised how many people were there. It was a great atmoshpere and a great place for a date. I would definately reccomend this place to everybody, especially any couples looking for somewhere romatic and cozy, and I will definatly visit it again next time I come to portland & tell all my friends about it.

Via Delizia is a new favorite. A wonderful opportunity to have a nice dinner salad or panini then splurge on fantastic desserts with an aromatic coffee and/or glass of port (2 of us split 3 desserts with coffee and port!) I'm looking forward to trying a dinner entree. Did not try the gelato but what a selection! The location is perfect for walking off dinner. We had delicious split pea soup, and panini with some very nice red wine. I really liked the Italian Chianti. The interior is cozy and quaint and I love the tree with little lanterns in it. The place was clean and woman who served us was friendly and helpful. After reading some of the reviews, it sounds like they could come down a notch to appease those who just want a casual serving of gelato. With so much competition in Portland, it would be wise to be more accommodating. Basically, I found this to be a nice little neighborhood restaurant.

I have been to Via Delizia many times with my children - it is a nice place to sit and have a latte while they eat their gelato. At least it WAS. I went in there yesterday with my four-year-old and was told that if we wanted to stay there, we had to sit and get table service. I don't care about the money ... I always leave a tip whether or not I am eating there. Not only would they not allow us to order at the counter, but they insisted on arguing with me that it had always been that way, which was just a lie, as I have paid at the counter and sat down with the gelato about 15 times over the past few years. Clearly, gelato is one of their main offerings, and how many people do you know who order gelato and then take it out in the rain to eat it? In a nutshell, their policies are stupid and their service is terrible. I don't care if there food is great, I will never eat here again & I will pass the bad word to everyone I know.

I took my fiance here for dessert on his birthday and we were extremely ecstatic to find a place that specialized in desserts. We enjoyed it so much, we've been back time and time again. The cappuccino's are strong and go so well with the desserts. We haven't tried any of the food, but plan too!

The environment offers an authentic Italian feel with the dining area resembling an Italian cafe. The patrons enjoy menu items made only in-house, including 24 different types of gelato, an array of appetizers, panini and insalatas, and, the signature of the restaurant, artistic desserts. My guest and I started with the Italian Sampler. It was a bit large for an appetizer, consisting of bread, oil and a plate of four slices each of two meats and two cheeses. The food felt very Italian and one could definitely tell the ingredients were high quality. The panini were next. When the Toscanos arrived, the presentation was immaculate: a warm panini and a cooled mixed green salad with an in-house made vinaigrette. The basil and artichoke spread on the panini added that something extra that made flavors in the sandwich pop. The mixed greens also included cucumbers and blue cheese. The dressing was subtle and allowed you to taste all of the flavors. With our dessert, we each ordered the recommended wine pairing, the Vignalta Rosso Reservo. The wine is a Cabernet/Merlot mix, which was a great accent for the Mount Vesuvius, a dessert consisting mostly of devils food cake. Again, the presentation was immaculate. The little dessert, shaped like the famous mountain, had lava (caramel and raspberry sauce) on the plate, a scoop of the chocolate gelato and, to top it off, a piece of cooked red sugar and brown chocolate, both shaped like erupting lava. Though the presentation was good, the dessert was better. The inside of the cake had melting chocolate! It was wonderful. The service was efficient, yet subdued, giving the patrons a chance to enjoy the romantic atmosphere and delectable food. It truly is a "dine-in" restaurant, rather than a "gelato-to-go" type atmosphere like Mio Gelato. Moreover, after tasting the chocolate gelato from the dessert, I will never go back to the "fail-in-comparison" shop on 11th & Couch!

The gelato is simply delicious. The rest of it? Well, there are better desserts almost anywhere else. The fake tree is cheesy and undermines any attempt to have the restaurant resemble an Italian cafe. Well, that and the translation of the restaurant's name in quotation marks. The pastries look like they've been sitting around for far longer than is appetizing.

The real kicker is the inability to sit down at a table--even outside--if all you've ordered is gelato.

In short, I'm flummoxed as to why this place has amassed such accolades. Mio Gelato has equally superb gelato but doesn't net the user rating.

And Mio Gelato'll let you sit down.

It was just by chance that I got to taste a little slice of heaven; Tiramisu heaven that is. Oh my, what a mouth-watering experience of subtle, well-blended flavors. My fork easily carved out my first bite and I immediately noticed how the cake didn't fall apart. Often times I get a piece of Tiramisu that is so over saturated by a key liquid ingredient that it has a pudding like appearance, which a Dolce Mori style often does, so I'm told. This Tiramisu Cake was firm, not dry, with a beautiful coloring of layers and it didn't drip. The second bite was telling, a hint of coffee, "no, that's espresso" the chef said "...and we make sure that the espresso is absorbed into the cake..." By the time I got to the third bite, all the flavors had come together ever so nicely with such sweet subtlety. Chef, you should be proud, because the proof of your brilliance is in the Tiramisu Cake, at least from my perspective. Ben fatto. Grazie.

I've been coming to Via Delizia since I first moved to Portland about a year ago. I was looking for a late dessert place when I found them. My ex (we were dating at the time) and I loved it, it became our spot. (Too bad it can't save a relationship!) Since then, I have been there on a business luncheon, dinner about 3/4 times, dessert about 10 times (I like my dessert) and breakfast on occasion. Very diverse menu. No joke, it was one of my deciding factors when I moved to the Pearl. I never get tired of seeing that tree in the middle of the cafe. So take it from a former restaurant manager (Think popular Italian, where you're family, yea that one), this place really has their stuff together, and I recommend them any day of the week. Good for Sundays, datenights, breakfast, a quick latte, you name it. The service is sincere and knowledgeable, the prices are great, especially for the Pearl, and the food is simply fantastic. Oh - and it doesn't hurt that its by the streetcar route and there are two parks nearby, not to mention a park right outside the front window. I give it the full 10, I'd rate it at 11 if I could.

Cons: Very intimate on the inside, rowdy kids would be happier with outside seating.

We've been here a few times. We really like the BUTTER PECAN and RUM flavored gelato flavors. The last time we went, however, they did not have rum gelato. The owner, however, was unapolgetic and acted as if, "Well, we don't have it, so what?" Did not leave us with the feeling of, "We'll come back again" although I'm sure that eventually we will.

First time we visited, we went for desert after dinner elsewhere. I had the best cappuccino ever! The espresso was perfect as well as the foam, including cool foam art (not just your standard leaf.) The service was wonderful and the waitress was able to suggest a fantastic wine to compliment my wife's dessert. Since then I've had fantastic breakfast paninni and lunches (paninni & pasta salad). And, if you've never had a gelato "milkshake," this is the place to try one. Mmmmm, mmmmm, good!

I have tried gelato 3-4 times at another nearby gelato shop. Trying so hard to love it and see what was so wonderful about it. I have had a bad feeling toward it until I discovered the gelato here. Wonderful atmosphere, but have always been on the go, so I have never stayed to eat (but would like to - I have heard the paninis are scrumptious =P) I have had cookies and cream, custard, and the mona lisa (which is peanut butter ice cream with chocolate and caramel swirled throughout) All 3 I would highly recommend, but I don't believe they make a bad flavor. I tried Mona Lisa as a milkshake and decided that it may not have been a good idea- unless your going to share it with somoene. It comes with 4 scoops of gelato and they use whole milk. Great- but talk about rich!

I wanted to order a dessert at lunch time but they told me only desserts that I could order before 6pm were creme brulee and cheese cake. So, I ordered two kinds of gelato instead, but the server gave me only one kind of gelato in a cheap plastic cup. She was busy talking with other servers. Not worth going for dessert.

My husband and I used to live in the neighborhood and for about 18 months frequented Via Delizia for dessert. We were fairly regular customers and were generally happy with the dessert and service. This year we moved to the east side and since have gone in twice for dessert. The first time my creme brulee was very undercooked and not edible. They took it off of the check but it was a disappointing experience. Tonight we stopped by with our dog to get some gelato and sit outside. I went in to the counter to order while my husband waited outside at a table. I ordered 2 scoops and then requested an Italian soda as well. I was told that the drink was for "in house" customers only and that the dessert I ordered was not. The tables outside were also for "in house" customers only. I very clearly asked if I ordered the gelato would I be able to sit at a table outside. The answer was no, you have to order the gelato off of the menu to sit at one of the tables outside. The restuarant was not full, there were 6 empty tables outside and at least that many inside as well. This being our second bad experience recently we left (with out purchasing anything) and we will not be returning again. If you like to be told what you are allowed to order and where you are allowed to consume it this may not bother you. I prefer to spend my money at establishments that are happy to serve their clientele regardless of the size or price of their order.

My overall Via Delizia experience was completley unsatisfactory. Sure, the desserts are pretty, but they never taste as good as they look. The food is boring and completly unoriginal. The "italian street" decor felt cheesy and unauthentic, and the huge fake tree was dripping with cobwebs. The staff ran around like chickens with their heads cut off, and the service was erratic and chaotic. Not to mention, three scoops of gelato will never be worth more than four dollars, nobody wants the cookies that go with it!!! My adivce, not worth the trip.

Great gelato, desserts and service are offset by the recent 30% increase in pricing. I think citysearch should add a couple more $$ under pricing. I live one block away and my wife and I would go at least 4 times a week until the recent price increase. Too bad Ben & Jerry's is a better value and almost as good (but not quite). The gelato fund doesn't go as far now, too bad!

The gelato is amazing!! and the variety is great, too! This is the place you want to bring a first date. The ambience is great and the desserts are an amazing, visual cornicopia of colors and textures. You can almost taste the desserts just by looking at them when you walk in the door. The Chocolate Marquis and the Tiramisu are the ones you need to taste for yourself. They're a little small, but very rich & filling when they're served with a scoop of gelato. You definitely get what you pay for here.

I've only been here once, but plan to go again for sure! My wife had a variety of gelato- she picked 3 of the many flavors they have to choose from and enjoyed them all. I had the chocolate lava cake. It is a small cake, but it's rich enough that it's just right. And it looks like a volcano- complete with lava and smoke made out of chocolate. Try it if you haven't already!

My family went here after a Christmas concert on December 23 and enjoyed some very yummy desserts. We had the chocolate hazlenut yule log (a Christmas dessert only offered this time of year), the vanilla bean cheesecake in caramel sauce, and the dessert sushi. All of it was delicious and not a crumb was left on our plates. The service was great and the staff were friendly. The atmosphere was very nice, with the big olive tree above us decorated for Christmas and the big windows looking out onto the Christmasy lit-up streets of the Pearl District. Great place!

The atmosphere was very nice, with the big olive tree above us decorated for Christmas and the big windows looking out onto the Christmasy lit-up streets of the Pearl District. Great place!

We went to Via Delizia last night after a movie about 11:00 pm. It's a great late night date spot because few places are open that late that are worth going to. The setting is romantic and the desserts are works of art. We went for the gelato which was fantastic. Although the desserts were pleasing to the eye they were very small. I think this place is fantastic and is sure to become our regular late night spot.

From the moment my spoon slid into the generous scoop of gelato that was before me, I knew this was a match made heaven....the intense flavor, the smooth texture and the wonderful elation my brain was experiencing has led me to believe that there is good on this earth afterall....and it comes in 12 flavors...
