On Sunday November 8, 2009 I contacted Precision Door Service about having my garage door fixed. The garage door spring had broken and needed replacing. I asked for an over the phone quote and was told that the repair would cost a flat rate of $69.95 for the service call plus parts. Period. I asked what the springs cost and was told it varied by door but the repair person carries all sizes and type with him. I researched on the web and local stores and found that price of high cycle torsion springs (7 year) for my door ranged from $20.00-$50.00 per spring. Also, I found this repair to range from $150-$200 parts and labor. Given the flat rate fee quoted plus an estimated $100.00 for a pair of springs, I determined that Precision Door Service quote was reasonable so I set up and a repair date for Tuesday November 10, 2009 at 10:00 AM.
The repair person came to the house and said the springs would cost $138.00 apiece and that the torsion cables which also needed repair would cost $90.00. High quality cables of this type run from $10-$20 per pair. Since I was at work at the time, the repair person initially dealt with my wife then spoke to me on the phone. I said that I would like another quote from another company and was told I would have to pay the service fee regardless. Under this high pressure situation (wife at home, has to pick up kids soon) and me at work I approved the repair.
My complaint is that Precision Door Service uses a misleading and unfair sales practice of quoting a flat service call rate plus parts, but then selling the parts for 3-4 times what they cost retail. In addition, since Precision Door Service charges a service call fee of $69.95 the consumer is stuck with this fee before finding out that they grossly overcharge for their parts.
The total bill that Precision Door Service Charged for this service was $435.95: $276.00 for 2 springs, $90.00 for a pair of cables, and $69.95 for the service call. This is more than 2x what is reasonable for this type of service.

I called and got same day service. The were very professional and the technician was knew what he was talking about. He figured out what was wrong with my door, and gave me several options to fix the problem. I went with his recommendations and he fixed my door. I never knew my door could be so quiet and run so well. I would recommend this company to anyone. My neighbors had also used them, and they were very happy too.

Just got a new garage door from these folks. They were really nice and great to work with, and the installer was really organized and knew what he was doing. He took the time to explain how my new door and opener work, and even wiped everything down and washed the windows when we was done. There were a couple companies that were a bit less, but they didn't match the service provided. Give them a try!
Pros: Was great from start to finish
Cons: Slightly higher price, but well worth what they do

They were able to come out the same day to fix my garage door. They were very nice on the phone, and their service guy was really professional and didn't treat me like a dumb housewife! He showed me what was broken, and fixed it and then went on to lube and check everything on my door. The cost was very fair and I would recommend them to my neighbors
Pros: Nice folks, great work, fixed my door
Cons: can't think of any

I would expect a garage door company to know a little something about garage doors. When I clipped the bottom of my garage door while backing out, I called Precision Door Company because they could come that day, plus they had a coupon in the yellow pages. Big mistake--never go for the company with a coupon. The guy (Brad) was friendly and repaired the part on the top panel that fell off. He quoted me a price to replace the dented bottom panel. Fast forward 2 months, when I wanted to have the bottom panel replaced. They said no problem, honored the quoted price, and sent someone a few hours later. So far, so good--I was very happy with the company at this point. The guy (Nick) installed the panel in no time flat and asked me to take a look and sign off on it. It looked great--except the panel design didn't match the rest of the door. Apparently, the company changed the design a few years ago, and no one at Precision Door thought to check what year the door was made, and whether the panel they brought actually matched the rest of the door. So now I'm stuck with either a mismatched panel or the old dented one. I told Nick to put the old one back on, which he did and quickly drove off. When I lowered the door, I was shocked to see that it was covered with greasy black handprints. Since I had already moved out of the house, there was nothing there I could use to clean the door. I had to drive to the nearby Albertson's and pilfer a bunch of their sanitary wipes and scrub for 10 minutes with a screaming baby in the back of the car. I couldn't get all the grease off, though. When I called the front office to complain, the owner (Kim) was very apologetic and offered to send Nick back to clean up. He called me and denied he made the door dirty ("I was wearing gloves the whole time."--well, I know I didn't put those handprints there!) but offered to clean it up anyway. At least the company didn't charge me for the two hours of my time it wasted, but it certainly didn't offer me anything but the half-hearted clean-up job. Anyway, if you have the misfortune to deal with Precision Door, make sure to verify that your door model hasn't changed since it was installed because they apparently don't keep track of these things.
Pros: at least the front office folks are nice
Cons: don't know much about garage doors
