The Black Rabbit is supposed to be the nice restaurant at the place and had the worst service ever. The food was decent but they made our group feel like we did something wrong when their staff was awful. Rude, incompetent and not

Poor service and over-reactive security at Edgefield. I've been a huge McMenamins patron for years but kicking a paying guest off the property for telling a bartender he's a jerk? I scanned some other reviews and it appears the security

my boyfriend and I enjoy just having a beer or cup of coffee out by the red shed and enjoy meeting new people if WE choose to join in on a conversation, We have enjoyed exploring the grounds at edgefeild and feel that there is always something to do, I have enjoyed being able to take my 10 yr old son there to just let him run around the grounds but to enjoy concerts and other activities there as well, We will look forward to spending more time at edgefeild and the red shed,

Pros: meeting new people, open space, quiet time when wanted

Cons: not a whole lot

I love hanging out at Edgefield - always plenty of things going on to keep me entertained. Great casual atmosphere with a lot of places to explore. It's a must-do for my out of town guests - something for everyone.
The only thing that bugs me - the poor service at the Power Station restaurant. At times, you'll feel invisible waiting for a table as multiple staff will pass by you without even acknowledging your presence. Other than that, I highly recommend staying at Edgefield.

Pros: music, golf, funky decor, Cracked Pots yard art show in July

Cons: service at the Power Station Restaurant

Great place to relax and party at the same time. I have visited many times for parties and always enjoyed myself! We even went on a ghost hunt!

Pros: There is a lot to do on the property

thin walls in the hotel allows you to listen to everyone doing everything.

crowds of loud 40-somethings devolving down a few notches in the food chain.

i guess what else do you expect when there are bars around every corner and in every little room on the property.

not a good place for a quiet getaway. i wouldnt recommend staying there, but find someone to be a designated driver and go have have fun for a night.

I used to love this place for years and used to go there at least twice a week but my last 5 visits were simply the last because, the rooms are old and they stay old, broken beds, no hot water and it takes forever to get a service, the receptionists are slow and taking phone calls while talking to clients; the food is the worst, simply childs play unless its over $25 then dont bother cause you will throw up, the drinks are fake and the wine glasses are barely 4 oz, brak fast belw zero, lunch is not worth it AT all, dinner has better choices; if they dont do something about it then its going down 100% IN NO TIME.

Hows this for kicks. A Gal that worked at Ruby's spa did a service on a gal that was getting married the next day. After the service the client mentioned to the spa worker that one of her finger nail had broken. The spa worker said if you can come in early I will fix it for you. The client came and was treated wonderfully. Her nails were done and prepared for her wedding she was estatic. However once management heard what the spa worked did they FIRED her on the spot. They said that service was not on the menu. She made a client very happy on her wedding day and she got fired. OK now you dont have to wonder why the employeees act as they do. We can put this one to bed.

The grounds rock, the art is fantastic, the beers are up to standards with other mediocre micro-breweries... however:

What does it take to get a HAPPY, speedy wait person or good food at this place??

This is somewhere you take your out-of-town guests because it's "so cool." That's about it. Or you really don't know where else to go that day/night and it's big, well known, and crowded, so you go there.

If you want quality food, however, you have barked up the wrong tree, my friend. To note: how can one company single-handedly mess up french-fries SO completely? Honestly? Who in world gave the green light to these 3 inch greasey, burnt tasting things? It absolutely baffles my mind to think they've been serving the SAME bad fries year after year... after year... after year. Has anyone in management ever tasted these?!

Finally... super snooty, slow, "you'll get it when you get it" employees await you around every corner. It's that hipster-chic garbage that the rest of the world doesn't find so quaint. I honestly don't care how "funky" your vintage t-shirt is; a genuine smile, quick service, and a thank you go a lot farther in my circles.

Cons: Consistently Terrible Food

Sure some of the staff seem a bit aloof, but the eclectic variety of places to relax and drink some beer/wine/spirits, combined with a consistently good rotation of live music and a number of other activities, makes Edgefield a great place to spend an evening. You can sample some wines and enjoy some tunes. Have a beer and a cigar by a fire in a cozy brick shed. Not to mention shoot some pool, play some golf, visit the glass blowing studio, sit out on the patio, watch a flick, etc. etc. If you cannot have a good time here, then relax, or get some new company.

Scoring Big @ Edgewood with Tony T-Money and the Crew: This rocking place kept T-Money and the Wrecking Crew kicking it like Tai-Bo all night long. T was kind enuff to leave his credit card and pick up the tab for all the sweet honeys! We thought we lost him in the cleavage of Miss California but he survived, yelled "cut me Mick!" and went in for the TKO! Gino was ready to front the bail money, but T-Money was all good. Fortunately you can buy enough beer to please a posse at McMennamin's without making a dent in the company pocketbook. Sully found the wings and the beer slide in and out just as easily - and the chicks too! Sweet lady LuLu kept it real while Bookie and his soon to be life-time sweetie Carny chugged some cheap ones. As for Mr. Pimpdiggity - well, if you want to know the rest, buy the rights!

This is a great historical place to stay. Very interesting estate to stay on. It is know for the Black rabbits that hop on the grounds. It has old charm to it. The bars and winery are great as well. Great artwork is desplayed on all the walls. Lots to do, why leave when you have dinner and a movie at your fingertips.

After a day of hiking with my dog our friends and I stopped for a nice cold beer,
not being able to bring the dog on the grounds (to our surprise) we parked in a
shaded spot and left the windows unrolled several inches. We went to the
downstairs bar for bad food and NO service to return to our car with the dog MIA
Turns out a concerned citizen notified a staff member because our dog is a
whiner, which notified the human society-rather then taking a minute to look
for the owners. Being from out of town and it being a Sunday it took about
300 miles of driving and 75 bucks to bail our dog out of the Animal hospital
that they failed to tell us they had taken him to. I would just have liked the
same effort that they had put into calling someone else to brake into the car
put into finding us on the grounds that we where obviously in.

This is a fun place to stay. Most of the rooms are European style with the bathroom down the hall. Interesting murals are painted everywhere. The grounds a large with great gardens and lot of places to get a drink and listen to music. The hotel is often full so plan ahead.

This place is basically a lovely, sprawling compound of little bars and places to discover. They also offer free music most nights of the week. Add in their own wines and beers and it sounds like nirvana.

That's what I'm always hoping for, anyway, but it never works out. Most of the staff acts as if they're too hip to be bothered, and your presence is an inconvenience to them. The wait to be seated is always ridiculous in the pub, even when I can see empty tables. The food is just cranked out--not terrible, but nothing you couldn't get at a cafeteria. Even the beers are a crapshoot.

I still go for the music, but that's an exercise in frustration too. For some reason they can't be bothered to put WHERE the music is going to be on their web calendar. If you call to inquire, they may or may not bother to pick up the phone. And if you do find out which building, you better already know where that is on the grounds. There's no map of the maze of buildings (which should be right on the webpage), and if you ask you are lucky if they grunt and wave in a general direction before immediately turning their back on you and walking away while you're still talking.

I'd love to recommend this place to everyone, but unless you're planning to just hang out all day and drink enough to feel extremely tolerant of frustration, it may not be worth the trouble.

I had a very strange experience at Edgefield this week when I decided to have lunch there with a friend. First of all, I called the day before to make a reservation at 11:45am. I was put on hold for about 3 minutes and when I finally spoke to someone and asked for a reservations for 2, I was told that there was no room available. When I asked again, for only 2 people, I was rudely told that it sounded like I said 15. Wow! Should have been a clue. But no, I went anyway. The menu stated that shrimp bisque was available and since soup sounded great to me, I ordered it. What arrived wasn't bisque at all but a mound of rice with tasteless red sauce and a collection of small shrimp scattered about. I tried my best to eat this mixture, being the type of person that rarely complains to restaurants. But I honestly couldn't do it. After paying my bill, I returned to my home with the worst stomach pains and cramps I've ever had in my life. For the rest of the day, I was extremely sick. Was there a connection? Timing tells me yes. After several bad experiences with service, I came back to McMenamins Edgefield after 1 year for this particular lunch - with hope that things might have improved. But now I can truly tell you that this is absolutely the last place I would go to eat or recommend to someone I valued.

I've always loved Edgefield for the beautiful grounds and amazing deals on wine tasting and now that I live close to it I visit it at least once a month. My husband and I will often trot over to have dinner at the Power House then take a walk up the the golf course bar and then back down to the wine tasting area... it's a great place to sit and visit with friends or listen to live music outside of the Little Red Shed. It's also a great place to stay- except on the weekends if you want a quiet night. As I read the reviews I"m annoyed with the over and over again "and there's no tv in your room!" For me, I go to McMenamins because it's inexpensive, I can usually find privacy, and I can GET AWAY from the phone and tv! I don't want a tv in my room when I'm on vacation- I'd rather go out and experience the hotel I'm staying at our the city I'm in!

I've been to several McMenamins throughout the Portland area. Typically I love their service, atmosphere and food; however, despite three visits, I remain unimpressed with the service at McMenamin's Edgefield. Most recently, my husband and I paid a visit to Lucky Staehly's Pool Hall on the Edgefield property. It took nearly a half hour for us to be noticed by a waitress (actually, we had to flag her down, she had checked on several tables around us, but failed to stop by our table). When we did finally get her attention, she had an attitude that made us seem like we were the biggest inconvenience in her day. She took our order with a snotty attitude and we had to wait another 45 minutes to actually get our food. The service we got on our previous visit to Lucky Staehly's Pool Hall was average, but not stunning.

On a prior visit to the Black Rabbit Restaurant, we waited nearly 15 minutes before a staff member even saw that we were waiting to get a table...as were several other people. We waited quite a while for our food, which wasn't that tasty (not typical McMenamins quality) and then that was the last that we saw of our waiter until he brought the check.

My husband and I are both restaurant owners ourselves, and this type of service is completely unacceptable.

Edgefield is actually not a typical McMenamins. It's sprawling and is sometimes a victim of its own success on busy summer evening on the outside patio. It's nice to go out and have that "out in the country feel", just don't take your dog as - unlike most other McMenamins places - you can't take your dog in at all.

Good beer, reaonable food, good location vs. unattentive staff and a bad pets policy.

We were originally gonna eat at the Power House there but there was a 20 min wait. So, my bf and I walked over to the Black Rabbit( A resturant at Edgefield) It should have been a sign to us to not eat there when we saw how empty it was. But we waited becuase we were hungry. Through the course of the wait three staff memebers walked right past us without a greeting. Finally we were sat. Then we waited and waited . Finally we were about to leave and the waitress showed up. She took my drink order and left without asking my bf if he would like anything. Finally she came back and we ordered his drink and she took our orders. We got our food, but still no drink for my bf. The food was awful and way way way over priced with small portions. Our tab was $80 for two drinks and two main dishs. Our waitress seemed bothered by our presence and we had to wait long intervals before she remembered that we were her table. I dont normally complain which I should have and somehow I still tipped. Save your self the money and stick to the Power House even if theres a wait!!

My husband and I got married there, and as much as we loved the atmosphere, we were left really unimpressed by the catering department. The chicken was inedible, the prime rib was overcooked, and the catering department took and lost our cake and knife server (it was found by them at one point but mysteriously lost again). We did however have a good experience with the event planner, and thought the servers did a really nice job.

We stayed 1 overpriced night here to check it out for our future wedding. I won't go back there ever!! The king mattress was old and springy, the rooms did not have their own climate control. We were freezing all night with the crappy blankets they gave us. I kept getting woken up from loud talking and screaming in the halls and the room next door was SO loud, it felt like I knew them intimately. Oh yeah, people kept gathering 3 stories down below our window and we could hear everything! That's WITH earplugs in!
The most important thing to me about a hotel is a feeling of privacy when you are in your room. This hotel is SO LOUD! It seems to actually be louder in your room than in the hallways! As my fiance said to me, it is a hotel designed for people who get trashed and pass out on the bed. Probably better than sleeping in the parking lot...

This place is great to go to especially in the summer time. You walk around to differant areas like a wine tasting room, pub, and other small bars. There are many resturants to choose from but the black rabbit is the best and it is well worth it. I would reccomend going to black rabbit and getting reservations for a little later and then going down stairs to the wine tasting while you are waiting for dinner. The wine tasting is great and it is also cheap. You can get 5 tastes for just $1.
This place is beautiful and great for dates.

I love this place, and have stayed a number of times, however, something has happened in the last couple of years. We just recently stayed the end of October, and the place was dirty. Our room had dirt caked along the floor edges, there were bottle caps under the table, so it was obvious it had not been vacuumed prior to our arrival, and the bathrooms were dirty. The mattress on the bed sagged in the middle to the point that it was almost funny. The noise on the porches is horrendous. When the pool hall closes, the clientele goes onto the porch, and creates all kinds of havoc, despite the signs asking for quiet after hours, and hotel staff seem to be unable to take care of the problem. What happened? I hope you can fix this. I really want to come back. Edgefield is charming, and the european style rooms and baths aren't bad, they just need cleaning. The artwork is wonderful, as are the grounds. One of the nicest places to be is in the barrel room in the winery wing. The reason I liked it so much is it is a nice relaxed, quiet place, where you can go to talk and sample wine. Unfortunately, there is now entertainment scheduled for 7 pm. It has not added to the ambiance. Please Please Please get your groove back. Edgefield is too nice of a place to let slide like this.

This is a hostel-make no mistake.Grounds gorgeous, but an attempt to disguise property and justify charging >$100 for a dorm room.
They cut corners and call it "charm".No:phones, tvs,in room ironing boards/irons,hair dryers or bathrooms, even no sample shampoos/soaps as can be found in any motel.
$130 for a small sitting room w/a cot and another tiny room with a double bed.Furniture was pleather covered adirondacks.Floor and furniture alike were covered with dirt.
Noise level constantly elevated (as in most youth hostels)-aggravated by paper thin walls and loud crowds of drunken visitors to the many bars onsite.Expected to sustain loud partying of fellow guests on balcony directly outside our window.
We had to walk to end of hall every single time we had to use the bathroom (even more inconvenient when you consider all the beer served onsite!)
All of this would not be as bad if staff were not so incompetent and rude.My brother had his wedding here and staff messed up his plans from the start by double booking his wedding and forcing him to move it indoors.Everyone in my party had issues with staff from waiting 15 mins. for a carry-out salad that had to be retrieved personally from the kitchen to waiting 5 minutes for a drink only to have a staff member cut to the front demanding a drink for himself after working all day.
In general staff is extremely slow and laissez-faire.Found ourselves constantly waiting for everything. The real underlying problem here is the price.Have seen and come to expect most of this behavior while staying in hostels in Europe and have never been surprised or complained. The reason is that hostels cost around $30-$40 a night-so you get what you pay for. If this hostel were $30,I would have no problem. It is the fact that they had the gall to charge me $130 per night for far less service than a Red Roof Inn and far more hositility that irks me.

We got married here, and we love the atmosphere and the rooms at Edgefield. The hotel, restaurant, and catering staff were all wonderful. However, the events planning staff were just awful, which surprised us because we were spending thousands of dollars and had brought a lot of people to stay at the lodge (our party scheduled numerous rooms in lodge all weekend, ate in the restaurants, went to the bars and winery, bringing in quite a bit of business). Jacqueline, who was our planner, never even returned my calls. During the wedding weekend, it was impossible to get hold of anyone in charge, the ballroom was not set up for us in time, they made numerous mistakes, and they overcharged us. Then, after the wedding, they sent an evaluation form, which we took the time to fill out carefully, explaining the problems we'd identified, and thanking them for taking the time to address them. They never even responded! I still like the lodge and the food, and I appreciated how great the rest of the staff was. But I wouldn't recommend holding your special event here.

Don't bother going to the Edgefield, the drive isn't worth the attitude and utter lack of help. When my party arrived, my boyfriend's mother appoligized for being in a waitresses way, to which the waitress told her, "yes, you are in my way." Then, our party of six sat for 20 minutes before our waitress even attempted to help us. I would like to tell you that she was busy, but she was just standing by the waiter station chatting it up. I know that many McMenamins have notoriously bad service and I normally take it as part of the charm, but this was unacceptable.

Cons: service is unacceptable

History and rustic beauty surrounded by lush gardens that are magnificently maintained, fantistic wine tasting room in cellar, relaxed par 3 18 hole golf course (in season). and a great restaurant (1 of 2) on site. entertainment year round and very good service make this a real gem.

I'm not 100% sure which McMenamin's Pub i went to, but I think it was in the SW. This was a $3 theater which sold drinks (not just sodas), pizza and burgers. The theater had desks and really comfortable movie theater like chairs. You can eat and enjoy a good relatively recent movie at the same time, with friends or alone. The experience is one that should be enjoyed by everyone.

PROS: Not typical movie theater food (more than just popcorn and candy)

McMenamins Pubs are the best microbrewery-restaurants in the area! I love their garlic fries, sandwiches and burgers. They aren't a "you been to one, you been to 'em all" type place though. Every restaurant is different and they each have their specialties! Go try one, you'll like it and then try the rest!

Edgefield is by far the best place to go in town for a drink, to eat, to wine taste, to golf, or all of the above. They have several different bars located on their massive property as well as two restaurants. The Black Rabbit is their nicer restaurant with higher prices and finer dining, yet it is all worth it. They also have a small "pitch and putt" golf course, excellent for a hot day; you can grab a beer at the pub near the beginning of the course and be on your way. There is also a wine room for the wine conisseur. Inside the main building (where the Black Rabbit is located) there is also a gift shop and many rooms that can be rented out for lodging. This is an excellent place to visit just to hang out or to take friends from out of town and I would recommend everyone in the Portland, Oregon area visit it at least once.

OK everyone...look at these reviews for Edgefield. First of all, many are old and need to be removed!!! Overall, most of the reviews are from pretentious stressed-out brides and their friends who should have been married somewhere in the Pearl! Every true Portlander knows the true McMenamins experience...average service, great beer, fabulous times with friends and unforgetable memories. If you are expecting a ROYAL wedding...mary Prince Charles. Edgefield is truly a Potland icon.

My boyfriend recently took me to Edgefield at the end of a long weekend getaway. First, we spent 2 nights in downtown Portland at a major chain and paid nearly $150/night and all we got was a generic room and parking. Our 1 night at Edgefield far surpassed that experience in every way for less than $120 for the Hammerhead package. It included 2 meals, a king room w/ sitting area, beer and all the atmosphere we could absorb. No cookie-cutter rooms or experience here! The distillery was my favorite with freshly squeezed lemon juice in my Lemon Drop Martini. I noticed several staff members present who chose to hang out in their off-time, which I think speaks highly of the place. We both left wishing we'd gone to Edgefield first.

I would highly recommend McMenamins Edgfield to anyone with an appetite for great beer, good food, and an inviting atmosphere. As far as lodging is concerned, if you are mature enough to appreciate the historic virtues of such a place, I guarantee you will not be disappointed. I don't know how one couldn't enjoy something so rich in simplicity. It's very relaxing NOT having phones ringing and televisions blaring, and there's so much on the grounds to absorb, enjoying the experience is a given. We loved the great little pubs; especially the old-style hospitality in the Little Red Shed. We felt like we'd been swept back in time! It was absolutely wonderful, and I would recommend Edgefield for a quiet get-away OR for a fun-filled weekend with a large group. We'll be back!!!

This is what you get at McMenamin's for $90 a night: no TV, no toilet in your room, no shower in your room and no air conditioning. Basically, you there are no amenities...two of the longest days of my life were spent there for a friend's wedding...never again!

A couple friends and i were walking down a hall one evening when the lights flickered and the hall went black. It became cold. We were each asking who turned off the lights to scare us. The lights suddenly turned back on and the chill seemed to evaporate. Downstairs people said the lights hadn't flickered at all. That is only my personal experience, but a friend of mine who works there has many more stories like that. great food, great service and a good time can be had there.

Like I said in the tittle it is a Gem. You must see it for yourself. But be prepared to bring your walking shoes. Walking among the beauitful grounds is a must. Then seeing all of the out buldings i.e.(pub, Powerhouse Station.) Also it is roomy enough for large weddings.

I went to the Edgefield after hearing about it several times from a friend. It was wonderful. I paid extra for a room with a private bath and 2 half hour massages - and it was worth every penny. The wine tasting was fantastic, and breakfast was quite good. It was fun to explore the grounds and learn about the history of the property. The customer service was unmatched.

Don't go there expecting a glitzy 5-star hotel experience, because you'll be disappointed and humbled very quickly. But if you go there with a sense of curiosity and relaxation, you'll be adequately rewarded with a small haven on a budget. The word ambience is the key here, as the atmosphere is inviting and laid back, food down to earth, brewskis galore, and rooms egalitarian. An excellent place to get away on a budget and still not feel cheaped by the experience.

Edgefield is only 15 minutes from Portland, but once you're there, it feels like a vacation away from home. The Black Rabbit restaurant uses most of the herbs and vegetables from their organic garden on the property and has some excellent dinners. The pub golf course is the most fun golfing experience I've ever had, but be warned, although it is short and easy, bring extra golf balls. The Little Red Shed is a great place to talk and have a brew, while the winery is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy a nice bottle of wine. Also on campus is a movie theater, a pub, a glass works shop, and the hotel itself. The best bargain I have ever found is their Hammer Head package. From Sun - Thursday, lodging, dinner, beers, and breakfast for two is only $109 dollars. Check it out for a quick, close vacation...
