I love going to this salon its a great relaxing experience. I have been going to Mackenzie for over 6 months now and she always gives me a great hair cut and i love my color! Everyone there is super friendly and they have great hair products.
I've had some great haircuts at a variety of salons. Sadly, I've had to go to a variety of salons for a positive, repeat-experience. Sarah has consistently delivered a stylish cover-up, of my 5 quirky cowlicks, while not boring me with idle gossip.
Great environment, great service and I am relaxed enough to occasionally accept the free beer or wine, knowing it's not to glaze over quality -it's pure bonus!
Keep it up 77!
I tried Kiley for a womens hair cut for the first time. She did an excellent job. She did exactly what I asked her for, nothing more, nothing less, which is how it should be. She was nice to chat with without being annoying. I got a great cut and was very happy with my overall experience.
Sara was the best stylist at Hair M before she moved to 77. Now she owns the shop. She keeps her edge with constant connection to innovation through her position with American Crew.
Pros: Sarah Adams - best mens' stylist in PDX
Cons: None nadas ningunos nary a one
I was in for the first time since the salon was taken over by new management, and I was completely taken back by what's happened to the place. One of the main reasons I went to 77 was because of the atmosphere. It was refined without being over the top. Now, it looks like a high society frat brother vomited in there. What was once a high scale salon is now an upscale barber shop.
Pros: Nice staff
Cons: It ain't what it used to be
I must say I am thrilled to be the new owner of Seventy Seven Salon. My name is Sarah Adams, I'm and American Crew Educator, and a hairstylist for 7 years. I've hired some of the best staff in this town, so come check us out!
Pros: great parking, great hair, wifi, cold beer
I've been going to the salon for years and have had nothing but great experiences. I used to have very curly hair and decided to give thermal straightening a try, as I'd heard great things. Nickol literally transformed my hair from unmanageable, unpredictable curls to sleek, straight shiny hair. She is extremely professional and fun, and is up on all the latest products and techniques. Her styling tips have also been incredible and spot on.
Vanessa has been cutting and styling my hair for about 6 months and I've been thrilled with my cuts. Since my hair is now straight, I can actually have a "style!" She always gives an amazing consultation and her opinion has always been right on.
Pros: Amazing stylists, nice environment,
Cons: parking can be rough
Vanessa cut a dyed my hair and did an Amazing job!!! She was really friendly and really seemed to have a passion for what she does.
I have received so many compliments for my new hair I WILL be coming back !
Pros: Ask for Vanessa!
Vanessa @ 77 did my hair extensions - they were incredible - they looked like my own hair so much that nobody could tell that it was not my own! Not only were they great they last over 5 months and loved them so much that I got them done again!!
Vanessa is AMAZING!! If you ever have wanted to have long hair - go to her!!
Pros: Vanessa does absolutely the BEST hair extensions!!
I have fine thin hair and never thought anyone would ever be able to cut it to make it look cute and full of volume. I always had an idea that it could happen if the right person gave it a go. Sarah at 77 did just that. I actually asked the receptionist who did a good job with my hair type and she quickly recomended Sarah. I looked at her profile on 77's website and it said Sarah was really good with mens hair. Well, fine and thin - that's me, and men too. It makes sence.
My cut cannot be beat and I have people asking me where I got it cut for the first time in my life! Also she was really nice and easy to talk to. I told her what I wanted and she actually did it!!! Ladies and the fellas too can benefit from a visit to this fabulous lady...
I am sure she can work wonders on any hair type!
Pros: Someone in Portland can cut fine, thin hair!!
I came in and got great natural looking color. I cannot be happier and receive a ton of comments on my great looking hair
Pros: Natural Looking color
My stylist, Nickol, was suppose to be the cats meow in hair coloring. I went to her, walked out looking the exact same, and got charged 115 for it. then i called back days later to see if there was anything they could do to make it look a little more dramatic, and they never returned my calls.
Not to mention Nickol was plain ol rude to me through out the whole service.
Pros: The stylists are good at what they do
Cons: Too many to name
I went to Nickol after reading a ton of great reviews. She truly is great at color correcting hair that has been messed up and the price was great. She took her time and my hair was not a frazzeled mess after I came out......it actually felt and looked healthy. I'd highly recommend you go if you want great color. She doesn't do cuts but that's OK would rather someone specialize in one thing.
Pros: Fixing bad color, Price, Specializes in just doing color
I asked Nicole to correct a blond coloring that showed orange roots (different colorist). When she removed the towel after processing my hair, I saw that she had colored my light blond hair a dark brunette. When I politely asked her if it would get any lighter, she was immediately defensive. She said that she couldn't work miracles, that I could go home and wash my hair in dish soap, and that she could use straight bleach on it to put white chunks in my hair because my hair was already damaged, so why not. I certainly didn't want her to keep working on my hair as she was clearly angry, didn't do it right to begin with, and reduced me to tears. This is not what a professional stylist does. The origional problem was simple to fix and her response to a simple question was intensely rude and unprofessional. When I left, she said "Well, I'll just charge you $75. Ladies, please, please, please do not go to Nichol.
Cons: Poor listening skills, defensive, and bad attitude
I just had my hair done and feel like a celebrity. Suzy is wonderful at her craft and has the skills to make even my hair look great! I am very, very pleased. My color looks beautiful and the cut is something out of a magazine. I will be back again and again. Thanks Suzy and Salon 77 - you made a lifelong customer today!
Pros: Wonderful talent
I love Nickol and what she does to my hair. She is really amazing and I don't have to go back to her every few weeks to get retouched. I'd give her six stars if I could
Pros: Nickol is artist with hair color
Cons: none...well parking once in a great while
I was feelling very frumpy about my hair and am not very good at articulating what I wanted want done. Vanessa listened to what I wanted, was very professional but still friendly and fun, then she gave me the best hair cut I have had in years. I do not have a lot of money to spend on hair so I found their prices very reasonable for such a great hair cut. I loved the feel of the salon and will be a customer of Vanessa's for as long as I am in the area.
My name is Sarah Adams, a year ago I posted on this site about my excitement in joining the 77 SALON team. WELL, I loved it so much that I bought it! I would like to officially introduce you to the new 77 SALON.
Our website will be under construction for a bit, please excuse!
Our staff are very talented. Our location is awesome, and you must come see for yourself!
Men's hair services
Women's hair services
Wedding event styling for Women and Men
Pros: Great location, skilled stylists
It saddens me to see a few bad reviews on here of me. I am a really good stylist, and unfortunately when a stylist may be having a rough personal time she still has to show up to work. I am not always chatty with new clients because I am usually concentrating on what I am doing, my art, but it is never personal. You can see my good works for yourself www.mandyzelinka.us. I love what I do, and I love that I can make people feel more beautiful. So, if you want good hair from a really nice person I am your girl ;)
Pros: She knows what she is doing
Cons: Sometimes aloof
I just had a really important interview and needed a more youthful look to land my best job yet. Salon77's Mandy delivered...she adjusted my cut and color to a mod-lookin' hot and professional blonde that I can updo.
I try to stay au current. You know, I am in my early 40s but I'm told I don't really look it. I credit the updates and straight up advice my stylist here has been giving me for a decade. When it matters, Salon77 delivers. And when you need to bank on your looks, you can trust them. Oh, and I scored the great new job to kick off my '09.
Pros: Best Hair IQ Around
Cons: Parking can take a bit of time but absolutely worth it.
It is so nice to go into a salon where they know you when you walk in and show how much they care. Mandy is great about asking me about my needs and also giving great advice about products and care needs to help keep my hair manageable and interesting. She never stops in her quest to learn.
Pros: Lively, fun salon
Cons: Parking in the Pearl
I can't tell you how many times people have asked me, "I have to find out who does your hair!", or a stranger in a store has said, "great haircut!" I've been going to Mandy since I was in high school, and nine years later she does my sisters hair, my cousins hair, my co-workers hair, my neighbors hair, my co-workers sisters hair, my cousins friends hair...I can't afford doing it often, but when I go, I leave knowing I'm turning heads all the way home. Never before have I trusted a stylist enough to be able to just say, "go ahead, you know what you're doing- make me beautiful!"
Pros: I am ten times more confidant when I leave
Cons: I'm a bit lighter in the wallet
Loyal clients, old and new -
I have moved to a new salon just on the edge of the Pearl- Please call 503-224-2556- Looking forward to seeing you in my new space!!!
I have been coming to 77 for years and adore the staff, especially my hair stylist, Annie Spears. Every time I get my hair cut or colored I get so many compliments. I've referred strangers off the street who have loved my haircut. I would highly recommend anyone who wants to look and feel fabulous about their hair to go to 77.
Pros: staff, location, quality of service
Just got a great haircut & color from Lincoln. 77 fit me in at the VERY last minute after my previous salon messed up my appointment (AGAIN) I'll be writing that review next... I was very happy with the results, he took a ton of time to get it right. My last haircut was a bit of a mess & he took a TON of time to get it right. Definitely reccommend. The rest of the staff seemed great too.
Pros: got me in last minute, clean, friendly staff
Cons: parking (but to be expected in the pearl)
Nickol is the best colorist i have had in many years. I have an appointment to see her in the next week and oh do I look forward to the uplifting feeling that I know I will have with my hair color! I have been going to her for two years now and her work shines because the grow out is not horrible ever...it's because she really knows what she's doing. She listens to what I want and is able to suggest creative ideas that always look good. Nickol is a pleasure and I appreciate her not being overly chatty but genuine and she is an interesting person.
I have been going to see Jessica for all of my hair needs for about 8 years now, and I could not be happier! She takes time to make sure that my hair is cut and styled exactly how I want it. I would recommend Jessica and 77 to anyone!
Pros: Great haircut, chill atmosphere
This was the WORST experience ever.
I went to Mandy, the owner of the salon, and therefore an expert right?
She explained she would color my hair a rich chocolate color with caramel highlights. I was sold. Sounded delicious...until the process was done, my hair was dry, and she said, "oh, well, it turned out a bit lighter than I thought." Um. Yeah. I looked like a skunk. I had the rich chocolate color she promised...along with huge CHUNKS of bleached white!!! It was Cruella Deville all over my poor little head! So, after the initial shock, and after my fear of going out in public subsided, I called the salon to make an appointment for her to fix it. After all, she was the salon owner, and cared about the satisfaction of her customers, right?? Well, it seems I was wrong on this one as well. After calling and leaving messages a few times, and never hearing back (after detailed explanations to the receptionist, and requests to just have her dye my hair back one color) I gave up and made an appointment at another salon.
Okay, so, I will spare you the rest of the heartbreaking details...but suffice it to say this little trip to Salon 77 left me extremely stressed, split-ended (the bleach she used FRIED my hair), and down about...oh, $200 (after going to TWO more salons to try and fix her shoddy work). So. I have yet to step back into this salon, or any other for that matter. I am, as the title states, scarred for life.
I've been to a-lot of Salons in Portland to say the least and have had some alright hair color. Finally decided to get some recommends and then finally go to a dedicated colorist.....will never go to someone who both cuts and colors again. After going to Nickol for a few months now realize I really only had so-so results before. Nickol specializes in color and it show....she really spends the time to make my color look amazing instead of it just being an after thought which is how my past stylists approached color. My high lights look so amazing and a month after having it done it still looks like I just got out of the salon. I'm not the sort of person who puts reviews on citysearch but besides letting all my friends know about Nickol wanted everyone who might read this know that Nickol rocks and will never get my hair colored by anyone else!
Pros: Beautiful hair color
Cons: Salon could use a refresh of decor and better lighting
thsi is the third time i have gone and had a totally different colorist, I am either stupid or too nice. Once again the color came out horrible, I am embarrassed to go out, the cut is even worst, i used to be hip now I look like a librarian, I am so upset then they charged me $130 for the damage they did to my hair. I will not name names, but my experience with 4 different people there has been horrible.AVOID!!!!
Pros: thumbs down for sure
Cons: thumbs down for sure
i have been referred to salon 77 by a co-worker and have given it 2 tries. i went to one stylist the first time, and while i was happy with my hair cut and color, she hardly talked to me and didn't seem interested at all in making me a return customer. i went in one more time and requested Mandy b/c i have read good reviews about her on citysearch. not only am i not happy with my cut (which is too short and not at all what i asked for), i have to agree w/ the review just below me... she seemed so disinterested in me and my life and was quiet the whole time, with the exception of answering a few questions that i asked her. to spend that much money on a so-so experience is so frustrating. i will definitely not go back to salon 77 and i will NOT recommend them to my friends. i am a big believer in word-of-mouth referrals and 77 will not get any from me!
Pros: cool space and cool location
Cons: bad service, disinterested staff, have had better haircuts/colors elsewhere!
I chose this salon after reading rave reviews. The salon is in a nice location in the Pearl district, and I got a good feeling when I walked in. I had selected Mandy (the co-owner), but after being sat down to have my hair cut, she seemed totally disinterested in what she was doing. She barely talked to me at all, and seemed in a hurry to get rid of me. The haircut itself was okay, but I was surprised when she didn't even bother to dry my hair afterwards. I was left with dripping wet hair, and as my hair dried while I was eating lunch afterwards, my shirt became covered noticeably with cut pieces of hair that had been stuck to my wet hair. I doubt I will be going back, or if I do, I will try another stylist besides Mandy.
Based on the great reviews for the is salon, I booked an appointment with the owner. I found her to be unfriendly, and harsh on my head (pulling my hair). She wasn't very talkative, and didn't really give me the hair color, or cut, I had to described to her. I thought . . maybe she is just concentrating really hard, but when I asked her questions about what she was doing, she blew me off. In fact, I'm pretty sure she left the color in my hair too long, it turned out super bleached, but then again . . . she left me under the dryer for about 45 min. Maybe she recognized she forgot about me, because she did say if I wanted to come back in, she would darken my hair. I also wish she described what she was putting in my hair (product, etc). She hardly said one word to me, but chatted with other stylists most of the time. Unless the other stylists are different, (but if this what the owner portrays) . . . I wouldn't recommend this salon..
Pros: They sell Kevin Murphy products
Cons: overall not impressed . .. read my review to find out why
You should definatly try 77 if you haven't already... they are the best in town by FAR!
Right in the heart of the Pearl District.. Do yourself a favor!!!
Pros: OMG they are all pros!
The great thing about Mandy at 77 is that you can always rely on her to know the latest and most innovative cutting and coloring techniques. If you're willing to let her to do her creative "thang" rather than always having a dead-set idea of what your hair should look like, she can help you find a 'do that you wouldn't ever have thought of yourself. And isn't that what starts trends in the first place? Give her a try - you won't be disappointed!
Pros: Hip, innovative
I had an unfortunate experience getting my hair done at a salon (not to be named) in the Portland area. I'll admit, the cut was awesome... but the gentleman helping me wouldn't listen to my preferences on color and placement of the color. My highlights turned out absolutely horrific!! They were streaky and orange, like the tail of a tiger or something.. some were hardly even visible at all.. I was very disappointed since that salon was voted one of 2007's best salons in Portland here on citysearch. The gentleman that helped me also came highly recommended. It honestly made me question the validity of these comments on citysearch. But after my experience with Nickol, it restored my faith in the rankings. Nickol was able to go in and make sense of the confusing "highlights" in my hair. She was able to tone them down into a more subtle shade. She was obviously very knowledgeable and clearly understood the concept of my desired color (unlike the first gentleman). I would DEFINITELY, truly recommend Nickol for anyone that is looking for superb color for their hair. I will most certainly be back to her again. Thank you for fixing me!! :)
Pros: Quality service, knowledgeable employees
Cons: Downtown Parking (that's all)
I was recommended by a friend to Rosie- and let me tell you, I think I've finally found a hairstylist I can go back to! Not only was she super friendly, but trust her to do what she wanted to my hair. I went in knowing that I wanted it a bit shorter, thinned out, and more stylish (my hair is shoulder length brown). Usually it makes me nervous when I'm like, " Go for it and do whatever you want cuz obviously I have no clue..." but she kept asking if I liked this and that, and she also dried my hair before cutting it more (which is great because your hair won't suddenly be an inch long after it's done drying). Atmosphere was fun, relaxing and trendy. Haircut took about an hour and was a wonderful price.
Pros: Atmosphere, expertise, conversation.
I just moved to the area and I found Nickol when I was looking for Christian. She was great, she knew exactly what to do with my hair color and she even put a gloss that makes it look shinny and soft.
I still need to find Christian to get a great haircut, Does anyone know where he went?
Cons: it's kind of hard to park for more than 2 hour for hair color
I absolutely love my hair. I will be going back again and again. Nickol does very cool hair. Glad my roommate found her and made me go to her.
I've been waiting to find a great colorist in this town and at last found one that does a better job that I could of ever asked for. Nickol really is great at placing color and would go as far to say as she is a color artist. I came in with my hair messed up from another person who I won't name. I've already sent one of my friends to her but from knowing how hard it is to find someone that makes you feel good not just when you leave the salon but good 4 weeks later is hard to find and has to be recommended. Not sure if the stylists read this but thanks Nikol. Can't wait to see you soon.
Pros: A true artist of a colorist
I was just researching a new salon when I decided to check out reviews for 77. I just had a horrible experience and was so surprised by all of the positive feedback. Just got a color from Lincoln. My hair is now blond on the top and black underneath. Some of my hair is colored halfway down the strand! I look like a skunk, which is really surprising as I asked for a "natural" look. Paid way to much for a job I have to have redone asap.
I have just returned from my 3rd haircut with Kylie and it is fabulous! I have lived in Portland for nine years and this is the first person I have been happy with. If you like keeping your hair a little longer yet swingy and fashionable and don't want to be coerced into something else then Kylie is your woman. She cuts my hair using techniques I have never seen anyone else use on me and my hair behaves better than ever! Really! It looks great all the time! Even when I style it myself. And it grows out great! Go see Kylie and give her your money. It's totally worth it!
I have coarse thick long naturally curly hair which has always been difficult to deal with. I have always dreaded any type of haircut because inevitably the hairdresser does not listen to me and does what they think is best which usually means a lot of thinning & I walk out of the salon with a big firzzy mushroom head. This is the first time in 10 years that I have walked out of a salon absolutely loving my haircut! Tadmidia is an exceptional stylist! She did not make any assumptions & she took time to question me on what I wanted, how I usually style my hair etc. She actually listened to me & did what I asked. She had some excellent suggestions for my style/haircut, she did not push products on me, and she did the best job ever. She also has a great personality, chatty, but not annoyingly so, she is down to earth & naturally friendly which made for a pleasant experience. I would reccomend this salon to everyone. Plus she does a good job blowing out hair & she had some brillant suggestions for coloring my hair (my next appointment).
Pros: Everything! Cost, Friendliness, Stylist (Tadmidia), Atmosphere!
Cons: None, I had no isses parking, found several spots right in front of the salon.
I nervously went to 77 after searching for a Portland hairdresser for 2 years- I found Michael and I'll look no further- He rocked! My color looks awesome and was exactly what I wanted. He knows his product and styles, which I have learned is super important. He recommended a great cut that I would probably never had tried without his guidance- I love it! Pricing in the salon is what I would expect when you receive the excellent service, knowledge and stylistic advice that I did. If you want a good cut/color, you're going to have to pay for it- Might as well be here- You won't be sorry!
Pros: Super cool basement salon
Cons: The door is a bit hard to find
My mother and I have seen Patti Green at 77 since the salon opened and have been nothing but impressed!! I personally have VERY thick hair and Patti is the ONLY person I would trust with it! She does amazing cuts and blow-outs. I just got married on Aug. 10th and was able to get everything I needed done at 77--waxing with Candice, make up with Rosie and updos with Patti and Kylie.
My bridal party and I were treated like queens the day we came in! They let us bring in mimosas and most importantly were running perfectly on time! Which on the day of your wedding is VERY important!! Everyone in my bridal party loved their experience!!
Rosie did make up--she is excellent! If you want to have nice clean make-up with a little added wedding day emphasis and still look like yourself-- Rosie is your gal!! Me and my bridesmaids looked BEAUTIFUL! Patti did my up do (remember I have TONS of hair!!) and Kylie did up-dos for the rest of the party. They were fantastic, flexible and totally accomodating!! I would never go anywhere else!!! I LOVE the gals at 77!!
Pros: totally relaxed atmosphere!!
Nickol was totally great. I had a salon down the street mess up my color and thought i was going to be stuck with a bad color but after a friend recommended Nickol my hair was saved. After it was color corrected received lots of compliments and felt great about my hair again.
Pros: Color, Skill
Cons: Reception area could use some updating. Lots of tacky knick knacks for sale....T-Shirts, purses etc. etc. Not a fan of shabby sheek but that's just me
Go to Nikol to get your hair professionally straighened! She is friendly, talented, and really knows what she is doing. I did a lot of research around Portland, and finally decided Nikol was the person to do this to my very naturally curly hair. I wish you could see the before/after results, because it is really amazing. You would never know I used to have curly hair! My hair looks and feels amazing. She even went as far as to complete a test strand before I even scheduled the actual appointment, just to make sure everything would work. Go to her, and feel comfortable knowing that she is amazing at this technique! Good job Nikol, and THANK YOU!!
Well, since most folks are looking for stylist: FIVE STARS HERE:
I have already followed Kuaia from another salon. I would do so again in a heartbeat if she changed her location. Kuaia is one the best colorists I have ever dealt with, and her styling is awesome. (I've had friends show up with haircuts that are trying to mimic what Kuaia has accomplished! Now that's flattery!) You will LOVE the results you get from Kuaia... She truly listens. And she is willing to experiment -- when I am. Never before! Love her work! She makes me feel like a hair model when we are done!
The salon administration and reception could really use some professionalizing. You might not get greeted when you walk in. Hang in there, someone is bound to notice you. When you call during working hours, you might end up leaving a voice mail. The black gown you put on might be ripped and ragged. The couch you sit in while you wait might be sagging to the floor.
The fact that each stylist in an independent entrepreneur and must rent the space in 77 might not take the responsibility away from them to put some pressure on management to shape up and attend to the customers TOTAL EXPERIENCE. The Salon itself - TWO STARS. I wish I didn't have to go there.
Have been looking for a great colorist ever since I moved to Portand. I've tried a number of salons and finally. my friend suggested Nickol at 77. Let me just say she's awesome. Hope you have a chance to experience Nickol's awesome skills .
Pros: Hair color, Price
Cons: Parking is tough but it's the Pearl so am used to it.
Tad has been my hair stylist for years. She is the best! Not only will she venture into new designs with you, but she will advise against things that she things you will - end up not liking. Do not be shy about making an appointment with her -- you will not go wrong.
Pros: Great job every time
Cons: Others in the salon are not openly friendly
