i'm a huge coffee person. i love sitting in coffee shops and partaking in any number of "coffee house activities"...namely people watching, reading a book or browsing the internet. i first stumbled upon this spot when i moved to portland back in december. i was in the process of getting settled into my apartment (aka selling my soul to comcast in order to pay for internet) and so i found myself at coffee time ordering coffee & using the WIFI every day for a couple of weeks. mind you--i ALWAYS purchased a coffee--however, the woman that works there consistently treated me like i was some kind of "cheap skate" that was just there to steal free internet.

i have several issues with this: (1) i was taking up a small table and was one of the ONLY customers in the entire place--she should have been happy to have my business; (2) i am a pastry chef and understand that the economics of running a coffee shop can be rough, but would you prefer to have NO ONE at your place?; and (3) judging someone for how much money they can spend at your establishment is cruel and VERY un-Portland....I'm sorry lady, I don't want to buy a scone from you every day...I'd prefer to stick with my coffee and bake my own goods at home.

All of this being said, after the last time I was at Coffee Time back in February, I vowed NEVER to go back again. As a fellow member of the hospitality industry, I commiserate with her frustration in serving people day in and day out. HOWEVER, if it makes you miserable, then quit your job....don't ruin MY day because you are a grumpy person. (for the record...this is my first time EVER posting a review on one of these websites, so i apologize if i didn't follow proper etiquette).

Pros: dark corners to help you focus or people watch

Cons: the woman that works there treats everyone like a criminal..

This place has great atmosphere and terrific coffee. The staff is always friendly and they are open late. Panache coffee is one of the best in portland and the location of Coffee Time can't be beat.

Cons: $5 minimum purchase if you use a debit or credit card

They seem to be more into what they're all about than working. When putting customers out to be more accommodating to other customers, they don't seem to care... a kind of, "well if you don't like it then move" attitude. So I'll move to Urban Grind. At least they smile.

This is a great place to play chess and sit outside with heat lamps. It has a cool, funky, alternative environment. And I like to read there, too. The key to the bathroom is by the cashier in a basket.... that is, if you're a customer. ;-)

The staff is unbelievably unprofessional, I've been in there on multiple occasions and the girls working are usually screaming at each other or complaining. They lack taste and disrupt the customers. Even on a VERY slow afternoon, it took 15 minutes for me to get my drink, it was ridiculous. The coffee isn't great, lots of hipsters/ scene kids, and the workers need to learn how to smile..find somewhere else to go, there are WAY better coffee shops in Portland.

I used to come and sit here to work all the time, and I would buy lunch and a coffee. Today I asked if I could sit for a couple of hours before ordering something and they told me that I had to consume to stay. Very, very rude, considering that the girl knows me, she sees me there all the time... but no, she even said that I could go to "Starbucks" and I would have to pay too to use the internet. Do they have any idea how many people steal their signal anyway without paying?.
The whole point is that they cared so much because I would use their connection for two lame hours before I would buy something.
Will never go to this place again. There's way too many good places in Portland to have a good coffee.

Ah, Coffee Time. Been there multiple times now since I started going to school in Portland. It's open late (until 2am) which is awesome, especially if you are looking for something fun and different to do on the weekends (good sober conversations late at night!). And I love that they have warmers outside to sit under while you smoke and drink your coffee! That being said, the coffee is not the best. Of the five or so times I have been there, I have had a good cup once. Otherwise it's been burned or not very flavorful. Also the baristas can be really snobby. But I guess that's just part of the whole NW 21st/23rd scene and all the little hipsters who hang around up there.

This coffee spot is open late and has a classic old hippie bordering on trendy feel now, but it is the same good old outside seating with heat lamps during the rainy sleety months and inside booths with high backs for privacy, also the secret rooms with silly bootlegging stories to boot.

This place was a staple of my pre-21 days. It was open late, and had a fun, grunginess to it. Nowadays, it seems much tamer. The coffee is alright, but it's sort of a hassle to go here. I don't think they're open 24 hours, but they're open til at least 2 or 3.

The coffee is mediocre, good tea. I decided to try their chocolate chip cookie and it was the worst thing I have EVER had. It was extremely hard, had few chocolate chips, and tasted terrible. I asked the barista to heat it up in the microwave and she used her hand to do so and it still didn't taste better when softened. This place has an awesome vibe and serves an important role in the NW. But never, ever, ever, buy a cookie here!

I really like the unassuming nature of Coffee Time. You can just go in, have a coffee and stay for either 1 hour or 6. The people who gather here are probably the best part, though the coffee is pretty good too. Great social scene, relaxed, pretty good music on some weekends. There's one barista who's kind of a smartaleck, but aside from him this is a pretty cool place.

Pros: coffee, social scene, decor

Cons: not a lot in the way of food, a few dessert choices would be good

With all of the nooks and crannies in the back, it's easy to loose track of time while sipping on a delicious coffee, reading or using the free wireless network, and munching on a panini.

The only downside is the smoking that is allowed at the tables outside. The smoke can make its way through the front door and into the front room in the winter. In the summer when the garage door is up, the entire front area of the the coffeeshop can be flooded with smoke at times.

Great homemade chai. Beautiful, fun murals (despite some dumb graffiti). Comfy couches and chairs. Lots of noise--great for first dates, bad for quiet studying.

This place was amazing. I got drinks for 3 people and only paid $7. The iced-tea was FULL of flavor and the espresso was the best I've ever had. Attended late on a Sunday night when there were plenty of people around, but comfortably so. Music, company, product and service were all fantastic and appreciated! And the fact that it's open late is great, considering that's a prime time for that sort of atmosphere. Bring a journal, book, or even a friend :D

Coffee Time is spotty. I've been in several times over the years (I moved to the neighborhood about 8 years ago) and while it was tolerable at first (that first year I moved here), I found that there were many better places in the neighborhood. The coffee (drip) has always been average or below. The barista's have always been too into their scene/vibe rather than their work/product. The crowd have always been either too pretentious, too "I'm too cool with my clove cigarette," or too smelly. These days, I even cross the street so I don't have to pass by the outdoor clique. I heard the owner sold the place to the workers... so maybe things will improve. Who knows. The place just never made much of an impression on me.

me like coffee time chai tea very much. SO yummy. never been there on a friday or saturday night because i've heard that it gets pretty busy. but on a cold rainy afternoon there's nothing in the world like sitting inside the cafe sipping on a hot cup of their magnificent chai tea. everyone should have one!

The people who go here to be social are scenesters in the worst way...but it's worth it for a fine espresso. The service is sometimes aloof (especially if you don't have the look) but the baristas make good coffee and in this Starbucks town that makes the drawbacks easy to overlook.

On a Friday or Saturday night you can point out Coffee Time from a mile away by the mob huddled around it. This coffee place is a great hangout spot and place to meet new people; especially for those in the under 21 crowd. The coffee is quite good, but the lively atmosphere located a hop, skip and jump away from NW 23rd is definately its best seller.

I agree the ambience is fine and the coffee tastes good. However. I went there for a Black Forest Mocha. I took a good swig and found my mouth full of wood chips!!! Not just one, but several. Upon close examination they were most definitely wood chips, some very small and splintery. Is this somebody's idea of a joke (i.e. black FOREST)? They are SO lucky I didn't swallow it.
