This place was such a sham. Searching the internet for an event to save me from complete boredom on Halloween, I came across ?Scream at the Beach.? As a poor college student who, my options are limited. I thought my prayers had been answered upon seeing this site. How much better can it get, right? I mean, five -FIVE!- haunted houses and a ?haunted carousel,? all for 20 dollars! I thought it was too good to be true?low and behold I was right. The ?haunted houses,? as they are claimed to be, were empty stores with some cardboard walls and NOTHING in the rooms. A full room might have had a table, one strobe light, and a blatantly-obvious stereo playing sound effects. I stood in line for 15 minutes to walk through uninspiring passageways that took about a minute and 30 seconds to get through. The ?monsters? running throughout the houses were teenagers with runny mascara and sloppy face-paint; some were even wearing just t-shirts and jeans. Way to go all out guys. Don?t even get me started on their scare tactics? saying ?aaahhh? really doesn?t get my heart pumping. I know most Halloween creatures are supposed to look dead, but that crew was absolutely lifeless in the worst kind of way. The houses were lackluster to say the least and the band was a tribute to Jimmy Buffet?Jimmy Buffet?! On Halloween?! Jimmy Buffet IS scary, but not in the way meant for Halloween. The price was cheap, but the attractions were cheaper. The ?haunted carousel? was a normal carousel with some shameful cardboard ghosts from the local Wal-Mart hung around the top. I felt like the butt of some cosmic joke. All in all, this place was an enormous disappointment and the website was completely misleading. My problem is not with the attraction itself; my problem is with the fact that the website makes this place sound like the scariest, most amazing Halloween site in the nation. The only scary parts of this whole place were the carnies at the carnival- and I don?t think they were part of the act.

Pros: It's cheap

Cons: It's lame

I've gone to FrightTown (at the Memorial Coliseum) for the past 3 years. This year, just to mix it up a bit, we went to Scream at the Beach. I read that it was supposed to be one of the top haunts in the country...which I later realized was a claim by AOL (a haunted house authority or just a sponsor?) This event was a major disappointment for me. It seemed like a bunch of kids putting on a haunted house. What I mean is that the costumes were, for the most part, lame. Many 'monsters' simply smeared black paint on their face and wore robes with their hoods up. I also felt that they used too many automated, computerized, monsters that never move like a living being. The acting of the 'monsters' was pretty weak, too. There were many instances where the 'monster' would just yell out "arrrgghh!" as you walked by but there was no acting. All 5 of the haunted houses were so simple. Lastly, for some reason, people that were associated with the haunted house but were not in costume were walking around throughout every single one of the haunted houses!!?? I'm not sure what they were doing but they seemed to really think it was cool to take all the shortcuts through the mazes...it took away from the experience of getting scared. I would have to say that the only positive point of this experience was that I only spent about 35 minutes going through all 5 haunted houses! Lines were short...but the walk through the haunted houses was even shorter! Not worth the money.
I strongly recommend going to Fright Town at the Memorial Coliseum. There, even when waiting in line, they are entertaining you w/ great effects and monsters with superb makeup. Well worth the money...and don't forget to go to their website to print $10 off coupons! Boo!

Pros: No lines. Lost of parking.

Cons: Everything else. Too much money for what you actually witness.

In a town full of haunts this is a must see. Well worth the time and money. Done in a Disney-ish style. Good effects, mood and number of actors in each of the haunts... no slacking here.
