Their Pad Thai is decent and atmosphere congenial, but definitely not my fave Thai place. It kind of feels like they don't care, even if they do. The big windows in the summer are a huge plus and great people watching. The food isn't bad.

A little hole in the wall easily overlooked. Not a big dining room, but very nice atmosphere and good service with very good food.

I love the ambiance of this restaurant. You know when you go somewhere and it not only feel comfortable but is beautiful to look at. Their food is just as impressive. I loved the soup samples offered so you know what you truly want. They have lovely drinks. Stop in for dinner when you have time to enjoy

As the second serving manager (or head server as I suppose they are calling it now) whom worked at this restaurant just a bit after it originally opened this is probably my worst fear come true. I ended up leaving the restaurant due to questionable business practices, and when I returned as temporary help during the holidays and spoke with the staff they came to me with concerns about the tipping system as well.
I was unaware that this was the extent to which it reached and my heart goes out to you guys. The food is good and the management are good people, however the restaurant has always been ran as you do what we say without question or you work elsewhere. Hearing this only makes me wish that I had done more questioning then following orders, and I want to let you guys know that if you choose to take litigation in this matter I am willing to help you out.

I worked as head server at MTB for over a year. During that time the serving staff was under the impression that we tipped out 30% of our tips to the kitchen. We recently found out that the kitchen only received 15% of those tips. The other 15% went to the owner. That is close to $3,000-$4,000 in 12 months that the owner stole from our pockets. That is illegal and immoral. The staff confronted the manager about this and the next day half of the staff were "let go". Myself and the other remaining server quit the following day.
MTB has very good food. However, know that if you eat at this restaurant you are supporting illegal business practices.

Thank god we finally found this place. With a million Thai food options in Portland we had visited many. Most were just ok, some are horrible. This place is amazing. The best Pad Thai I have had on years. Some reviews say that the service is poor. Don't listen to the stuck up fools. This place is family owned and operated. I have never had poor service in all of the times I have visited. Enjoy this great taste of Portland.

Despite the proliferation of thai places in Portland, this one is my wife's and my favorite. It has everything you could want in a neighborhood place: very good food (I won't claim to understand all the various nuances of Thai cooking, but the food here is quite tasty, with fresh ingredients, and it tastes like all the sauces are made from scratch, which is markedly different than most other thai places we've tried) and excellent service. The wine list is very reasonable for the food, and the atmosphere very nice: it can be romantic or casual, albeit a bit more upscale than the average Hawthorne establishment. I really can't understand the previous bad reviews--we've eaten here many times and never had a bad meal nor experience. I'd strongly recommend this restaurant to any of my friends or family.

I live in the neighborhood and have yet to find a better traditional Thai restaurant in all of Portland. Pok Pok is also great but a very different type of food. The sevice is always prompt and they start you with a sampler of six soups. I like the Tom Ka and Tum Yum. The presentation of the food is a little artistic, with things like carrots shaped into flowers. The vegetable are not overcooked and a quite tasty. My favorite dishes are the Pad King and Crying Tiger.

I have a confession: I work at My Thai Bistro, so I admit I'm probably a little biased. That's why I'm not going to comment on the food (which is always fresh and beautifully prepared) or the service (which is attentive almost to a fault). I'm going to comment on the horribly negative 1 star reviews below. While some of them may indeed be real, I know for a fact that the ones written between late Feb. 08 and late May 08 are fake. The restaurant was closed for remodeling, and any review (I think I counted two or three) posted during those few months was written by someone with a big grudge against the place. But why trust any of us? Come try us out for yourself!

First off, I signed up for citysearch in order to write a review for this restaurant, mostly because I ate there last night and could not believe how many low ratings they had. The fact that several of the 1 star reviews were written on the same day (with different complaints) by people who haven't reviewed other places makes it apparent that they are likely totally fake. How low!

Anyway, my husband and I ended up here on Thanksgiving as it was one of the only places open in town (my turkey didn't thaw in time...). It was very good all around. The service was perfectly friendly. The food was flavorful and fresh-tasting - the vegetables in my dish actually tasted like vegetables (not just the yummy sauce they were in). My noodles were tender but not mushy. We were given samples of the soups when we sat down - all of which had their own complex flavors. This is definitely one of the best Thai restaurants we've been to in Portland - I'm very glad my turkey didn't thaw, or we may have never gone there!

Pros: Very good food, tasteful decor, friendly service, very clean

Cons: As with all places on Hawthorne, parking might have been a problem if it weren't Thanksgiving

I have been to My Thai Bistro several times and every time I have been very impressed with the food and the service. The servers/hosts are always very friendly, the drinks are delicious, the ambience is soothing and the food is beautifully presented, very fresh and full of flavor.

Pros: Ambience, service, food

I was starving and was wandering Hawthorne and stumbled onto this place. I was greeted right away and given a good seat. I always order Pad Thai in a new Thai restaurant, it is the defining Thai meal for me. Their pad Thai was excellent and fresh tasting. My food was brought quickly and was delicious. I also enjoyed their Thai ice tea, it was made with coconut milk and very delish! Great service as well.

Pros: great food and service, wonderful decor, not the usual cheesy thai

So my times at My Thai have been varying. The first few times I went on a Tuesday and it was incredibly slow in the restaurant, but service was great and the food was okay. Nothing too memorable about it, but it was bad. However every time I have gone on a Friday or a Saturday the service has been terrible, and the food even worse. I once called in my reservation and still had to wait 45 minutes to be seated, it took another half hour to get my appetizers and when my food arrived it was cold. When I spoke to the hostess about this she kept saying they were understaffed. They gave me the same excuse on four other occasions when the service was horrible. I am beginning to think this is just a standard line.

After my last few visits being absolutely horrid I will no longer be a returning customer. They have become just another dive on Hawthorne.

My friends have been raving about this place for quite some time, so I figured what they hey why not check it out. I even read the reviews no here first and kind of knew of what might happen. Well unfortunately my friends being college students obviously liked this place because there idea of gourmet food is burgerville. The food was served lukewarm, my chicken was undercooked and I also got the excuse the previous guy had about there excuse of being "Short staffed". Not too mention the crying child in the backroom was terrible. I will NEVER go back.

Pros: Seated somewhat quickly

I was there for just chicken pad thai and my chicken was nearly raw! NEVER GOING BACK. The service was slow, the staff rude and I felt as though my time was worthless to these people.

It took me a good 45 minutes to find reasonable parking. This night was not starting off well. I ordered the Pad Thai, but absolutely no shellfish products could be on it. I told them this and they seemed to understand, however as soon as I bit into it my throat swelled up and I ended up using my epi pen. To top it off they offered to comp my meal for the evening but charged me for everything else. never going back

My experience the other night was absolutely horrible. The food was not as great as some of the other reviews may lead you to think. The pad thai was bland and lacking any originality, and the pad ruam mit was waaay overspiced. It seemed that i was lucky enough to experience both extremes that night.
The service was equally as bad. I had to wait an hour before my food came, and when it did arrive it came appetizers and all at once. The fact that the appetizers were cold led me to believe that the staff simply forgot about them. The only highlight of the night was the wine selection, but that was not nearly enough to save this terrible evening.

The food was INCREDIBLE! I ordered the sweet and sour chicken and it came pretty spicey at spice level 4, but was to die for.. Best I have ever had. The service was good, perhaps the building could use a little work on lowering light levels and make it more romantic, but overall very clean and nice. Would (and will) recommend this place to anyone and everyone. I will be back soon (can't wait). Truly a treasure for the Hawthorne district.

I used to frequent this restraunt on a weekley basis. It was my haunt every thursday or friday night. Its an an awsome location with lots to see. Both window shopping and people watching. However, latley something has changed. I dont know if it is because they had to raise their prices or a change in managment. but i just havent been impressed. For the price they want a plate. Which is kinda high for their location, i kinda expected better service. They dont know how to mix drinks either. One thing i will give them credit for is their food though. As it is VERY good! But if you are like me i also like to be treated like a person while eating there. And well they seem too occupied with other things. Like their daughter lisa who is always crying from the kitchen. Not romantic at all! Food service is average. It takes them about 30 mins to get any given meal out. If they are busy expect to wait 45 mins though. Over all i wont go back as i just get a bad vibe from this restruant. Almost like they are trying to hide something. That and i think the manager lady who seated us was skimping tips from the other employees. Everynow and then she would slip something into her pocket while working her way over to the till.

Went there on a double date see comments below for more info from the other party

Pros: Good Food, Thai Ice tea (get the to-go size much bigger)

Cons: Crying baby in back, server lady, time it took to get food, Setting inside location

The food is absolutely amazing. The executive chef was born and raised in Thailand, growing up amidst the food culture that they had to offer, and has brought what I have tasted to be the closest to authentic Thai cuisine you can get on the west coast.

Now to get down to the actual critique:

The atmosphere gets an 8/10. It is an open inviting collection of Antiqued art pieces that I have been told were shipped in from Thailand. However the small place leaves a bit more room to be desired on a busy night.

Service gets an 8/10 as well. They are polite and prompt, however on crowded nights service slows down to a crawl, often forcing the hostess to assist in seating customers.

Quality of food gets a 10/10. This should be, without question, the standard to which all Thai restaurants in Portland live up to. Presentation gets a 9/10, as the food is definitely some of the most appetizing in appearance by far.

My personal recommendations after dining here multiple times; Order the catfish. By far the most amazing curry dish on the menu and its absolutely stunning to look at.
Also ensure that you make a reservation on Friday or Saturday as it does get crowded.

Romantic atmosphere, excellent service (!), and great food! We're two California transplants who are used to good Thai food, and go back to My Thai every time we are craving Thai. Highly recommended.

PS - The red curry is the best!

My Thai Bistro has low-key atmosphere and the food is exquisite. Our pad thai and curry were flavorful, smooth and filling; really generous portions. The service was impeccable, offered by a lady who's obviously part of the management. Charming touch: free soup samples are offered while you're looking at the menu. Prices are not higher than usual around town, so My Thai Bistro is a real treat!

We've been coming to My Thai since just after it opened and have loved every minute of it. The food is outstanding, the service is superb, and you must try anything that comes with the peanut sauce. It's unbelievable. Every dish I've tried (and I've tried a great deal of them) has been a complete success.

This quaint and comfortable Hawthorne destination is without doubt one of Portland's finest Thai restaurants. The flavors here are intense and diverse. Common Thai dishes take on uncommon sophistication. The staff is both friendly and helpful yet unobtrusive. Any dietary needs are gladly met. I can't tell you what a joy My Thai Bistro is. A must try.
For the vegans... they are more than helpful at meeting your dietary needs. You can even have a Thai Iced Tea here!
