.

I'm trying to find the rainbow here -
because I know there is one to be found if I look hard enough!
While the boys volunteered at a Flag folding ceremony at a
church in Portland for their Memorial Day service, Jean and I
decided to grab breakfast at a place she and her oldest
son had frequented many times. (Junior's Cafe on 12th).
When we arrived, we put our name on the waiting list
and waited outside. It sounded like they were playing
a collection of Willie Nelson songs, and before long
we were seated. After we had placed our order,
something shifted in the music they were playing.
I can't describe it as music or singing, I can only
tell you that a few instruments were making noise
and a voice sounding like an angry man slurring
words into the microphone was talking over them.
Not singing - trust me, I am choosing my words
very carefully here. That is the closest and most
accurate description I can give you of the very
loud noise playing directly above and behind us.

It was overpowering.
It was difficult to even talk or think over.
Now I have a high tolerance of most things,
but something about this noise was making
our visit more and more unpleasant.
We even asked the people next to us
what they thought of the overhead noise,
and they didn't care for it or it's volume either.

Now, rather than wait for our server to come by
so I could request that the (I cannot call it music)
"sound" be changed or turned down - Jean
beat me to it and tracked down someone on staff.
Now if you've ever met Jean, she has a very
disarming way of saying things that make
you glad she said them - no matter what!
She's respectful, considerate, and kind -
while at the same time articulate enough
to communicate what she wants to say.
She also has a degree in restaurant
management, among other things
and ran one of the top restaurants
in Portland in her younger days.

So I was surprised when she came back
to the table and said that they (restaurant)
was not willing to change the music,
nor did they want to turn it down.
After a few more minutes, we decided
if the environment wasn't going to change -
then we would change our environment!
No sense letting good food go to waste.
We took our food to the outside table
where it was quieter & made the best of it.

OK, so here is where, had I not seen it with
my own 2 eyes and heard it with my own
2 ears, I would not have believed it.
I swear, I wondered when the camera crew
was going to come out and say "SURPRISE!"
and that we were on some sort of prank show.

One of the staff, who I later discovered was the
owner, came out with 'To Go' boxes and our bill
telling us we couldn't have food outside.
And after trying to tell her that we came outside
because we couldn't be inside with that "music",
she proceeded to tell my Wife that she was
being dramatic and immature and that
clearly this wasn't her kind of place.
Seriously - this is where I thought cameramen
would be coming out any second from hiding.
Not only was the woman (who turned out to be
the owner) berating us in front of other customers,
but her accusations were not even on keel with reality.
The only drama and immaturity were from her.
We were completely calm throughout our visit -
no joke. Ask anyone there and they'd agree.

After our scolding, another couple came out
and they, too had mentioned that they didn't
care for the "music", and they were told they
were welcome to not come back again.
By the owner. Really - that happened!

I guess we were not the only crazy ones.

The entire experience was unbelievable,
and to be honest - downright insulting.

Best vegan eggs I've ever tasted. Loved the vintage atmosphere and the friendly service. It was a great place for my kids too.

This is the breakfast place nearest where I live, so I've been to Junior's quite a lot over the last four years. In 2006-07 I had some issues with very slow service and somewhat small portion sizes, but as of the last two years the portion sizes have been large (but not overwhelming) and the service has been friendly and reasonably fast. They used to be cash only, so I was glad when they started accepting cards and I'm more than willing to pay 50 cents extra to not have to run down the block to the ATM (when they first started taking cards I was politely and apologetically informed about the fee many, many times, and really didn't care much about 50 cents!). Of course any restaurant you go to will have varying service depending on who is working at the time, but I've had a lot of good experiences at Junior's, and none of the bad ones described in other reviews. They've even let me eat there within only a few minutes of closing, when some other restaurants will turn you away, especially if you're eating alone. Great place!

Pros: Great food, friendly service

Cons: Occasional slowness

Had a horrible experience at Junior's. After a great deal of drama trying to split the bill between two credit cards, being told rudely that there was a 50 cent charge per card, the e cards were then charged wrong - with little apology.

When we were done getting payment settled and waked out of the restaurant, the waitress charged after us screaming that we hadn't tipped enough!

It was my fault, I hadn't meant to snub her, but with all the receipts flying around I had done my math wrong and only tipped $2 when I should have tipped $6.

But is that a big enough error to come out of the restaurant screaming at me in front of everyone I had been eating with and everyone who was waiting for a seat?

I was so shocked I upped the tip and didn't say anything else - but I was very embarrassed and the more I think about it, the more appalled I am by her behavior.

The service was hardly good enough to raise that kind of fit over $4 and if she did want to check with me and see if we had been unhappy with the service she should have quietly pulled me aside, not made a huge scene.

I won't be going back to this restaurant.

Cons: terrible service, only so-so food

Great little cafe! Great breakfast! The bacon is cooked to perfection and I love the grilled polenta with a poached egg and greens for breakfast.

So nice to be served by people that obviously don't hate their job. I went in on a Sunday at 10am, the place was very busy but everyone was smiling and I was happy to wait. My food was perfectly prepared and tasty, I would highly recommend Junior's.

This little cafe is in a great location in SE. They have a loyal clientele and will serve you endless cups of coffee. They have a superb scramble and offer tofu as well. You may have to wait but go grab a cup of coffee at Tiny's and wait it out.

had an awful experience because who goes out to breakfast awake enough to realize they are cash and check only. after waiting forever and getting our hopes up on the elaborately delicious descriptions of food we were disappointed with our food, the service, and the bill. if you are a vegan it could be worth those things--i can really see that, but otherwise get a bagel sandwich at Kettleman's Bagelry just down the street.

What a terrible experience! We watched someone wait 20 minutes just gor a greeting and water in the nearly empty cafe. Then another half an hour for overpriced eggs. When the waitress took a guy's food before he was finished (without asking), he tried several times to get her attention. She responded by embarassing him in front of us and the other group in the cafe. I couldn't believe how the waitress treated the guy!!! He wasn't even being rude or unreasonable, but she had taken his plate away while he was still eating! Then she attacked him and insulted him and I will NEVER go to Junior's again just from seeing that whole episode. That was some of the worst service I have ever seen in my life, she totally just ruined this couple's day- and she was clearly in the wrong. The food was decent, the decor is cute, but the attitude was terrible. Cross this one off of your list.

Pros: Decor is cute in a 60s kind of way

Cons: The "service" is horrific

Great food. The most beautiful presentation of french toast I've ever seen (fresh fruit french toast). Pleasant service. Go early to avoid the wait. Child-friendly (they have some kid books and toys to keep the little ones entertained at the table).

Let me say that I dig the decor in Juniors quite a bit. Gold is the main color here & the place gives a feel of kitsch & luxe at the same time. The waitstaff was direct and friendly and all quite lovely little hipsters that you could feel okay having your granny meet. I must admit I've been there twice & had the same dish. But it was so good the first time I couldn't help myself. I had a potato dish called the Spicy. I added an egg & a side of chicken apple sausage to go with it & experienced a kind of breakfast bliss I have not known in a while. The potatoes are cooked to a browned happiness and the home-made salsa was some of the best I've ever had from anywhere. Infact many breakfast themed places could take a lesson from Juniors on how salsa should taste. And when I cut up some of the sausage & put it on the spuds...Oh joy indeed! Tried the Spicy without the chix sausage & it was a bit more flat than the the few days prior, but good all the same. My dining partner liked her breakfast too but I forgot the name of it. What was interesting too was how darn good the toast was. I got the italian both times & the toast light & cooked perfectly with just the right amount of buttery goodness. When I went to Juniors this past Saturday the place was busy yet nothing was compromised & my other 3 dining companions finished theirs meals completely and all were very happy. I'll go back soon & maybe try something else.

When someone asks for vegan food, it would be nice to NOT get butter on toast. Also, less grease and salt would be good. Maybe increase the mini sized portions a bit?
I'm still hungry.

I love Juniors. It is comfortable and tasty. The staff is the best and most consistent in town. The new owner is one of the servers which I think adds the familial touch and keeps all of the service above par. Owners changed a year or two ago (i think) and I know they tried changing the menu a bit, only to go back to what the people loved. They have tasty vegan options for those who partake and they don't taste gross (vegan french toast on the list). The scrambles all around are awesome!!

Love the gold booths and the velvet wallpaper and lights!

The Junior's staff always welcomes me with open arms. The servers know what kind of tea I drink and even my name. These folks never fail to serve me and my friends warm toast and hot delicious eggs topped with fresh herbs and a side of organic fruit if we feel like it. The new menu shakes things up a little, but all of the old favorites remain. Besides, you can't miss with additions like polenta, poached eggs, braised greens and the fennel leek hash. I'll keep coming back again and again and so should you.

Junior's Cafe was bar none my favorite breakfast restaurant of all-time, for many years. The heaping plates of spuds, sizzling hot with tons of cheese and spinach, were a godsend on sleepy Sunday mornings.

All of that seems to be gone now. I went to Junior's a couple days ago for the first time in a year (recently moved back to Portland) and it was like night and day. For starters, their menu has been changed to add a few more items, but the annoying thing is they got rid of the old names of the Spud Melts... So now instead of just saying you want the "Greek Spuds" you have to say you want the "Roasted potatoes with spinach, feta, garlic and tomatoes", and then once you're through communicating that to the waitress, she just writes "Greek Spuds" on the ticket anyway. What the hell was wrong with the old name of the dish??

Now on to the food itself. As a longtime Junior's devotee I was really excited for another big tasty plate of potatoes, but what I received was anything but. For one thing, the portion size was about 1/3 what it used to be. The potatoes pretty much only covered the very center of the plate, whereas before it was all the way to the edges and piled high. Secondly, the potatoes were way undercooked and almost rock hard in the middle. The potato slices were also gigantic, requiring you to slice through their rockhardedness to fit them in your mouth, instead of just being able to eat regular size spuds like the old days. My wife ordered a different spud dish from me and hers was exactly the same way. Tiny portion, undercooked and underwhelming.

Someone mentioned that this place had new owners. I have no idea who they are, but they completely blew it. They've ruined a great Portland breakfast institution and I'm never going back.

I love this place, I used to love it a lot more before I started making my own special spuds. The best thing here is probably the special spuds with the pork loin instead of bacon, or spuds with spinach, mushrooms, feta, and pork loin. The owners changed recently but the food hasn't. The service is friendly, the wait can take a while if you don't come at the right hours, but hey just ask to sit outside or smoke a cigarette or something, it's worth it. You will be full if you eat a plate of spuds. The waffles are great too, though not as filling as the spuds. The scrambles are all right, but a step below the spuds. If only this place served mimosas...

I love going out to breakfast, and there is no better place in Portland than Junior's. It is consistently amazing. Nothing ever arrives charred and no sides or substitutions are forgotten. It's a great deal.

.

We've been going to Junior's for over five years (until we recently moved, we were going on a weekly basis) - never once have we had a bad experience. We're now living in NE and are still trying to find something comparable - we still haven't found a breakfast joint that can come close to matching Junior's quality of food, service and value. They serve Stumptown coffee, which is quite good, although it does have the tendency to loosen the bowels somewhat.

Pros: friendly waitstaff, great scrambles, great coffee

Cons: a little dark

Maybe Juniors mngmt is paying attention - my service was friendly and attentive. Food was really damn good: fresh ingredients, hot, crispy, simple, and not over-spiced. I went here about four months ago and was not impressed. My friends convinced me to give it another try and I'm glad I did - just be prepared to wait for a table.

The gold booths are outstanding, the home fries are mostly "Hit" in the great Hit-or-Miss dialectic, apparently the waitresses are hot as hell, and I once saw Daria there. The wait for brunch is way better than at Cup and Saucer, and again, the home fries are only slightly less reliable.

I've been a long standing Juniors fan. On a recent visit, my opinion turned. The service was horrible. We left a 17% tip regardless. On our way out, the waiter yelled at us in the street for the "horrible" tip. Huh? Did I miss something? I wrote to the owners, and they called me in response. Explained some issues they have been having, etc., and promissed to send a gift certificate to encourage me to come back. It has been 2 months, no gift certificate. Guess the owners don't really care for my business. I'll go elsewhere.

Pros: Inexpensive, Yummy

Cons: Service, Crowded

This place has THE WORST service I have ever seen. My party of 3 waited more then 45 min. for a table, while other people got there and were immediatly seated. Even after nicely bringing this to the attention of the waiters we were ignored and told that there was "nothing they could do". But some how they managed to seat one person who waited 10min in a booth by themselves, while we waited more then for close to an hour before just leaving. This is the worst I have ever seen. If you want service there be sure to get several tattoos and a trucker hat!

Pros: Food smelled great.

Cons: No service at all.

This place jams, get it? Offerings are cheap and plenty, but more importantly, they're delicious. Order one of the scrambles and you'll have enough for a meal the next day. How many places do you know that offer Nutella on toast? I suggest the owners arrange for counter seating so one person doesn't take up a whole booth, while many people wait outside in the cold. One big downside: service is painfully slow.

simplicity being a big thing in the food world now, it seems to have never been forgotten here. you can get a scramble with zucchini and some frozen corn, and you know what, it's just wonderful. personally, i hate almost all vegan food because it's crap, but their vegan spud plate is so good (order it with bacon and eggs) i would eat it weekly. the booths are cozy and if you get bad service, chances are you deserve it. i make a point of smiling at my server, and anybody who asks for a separate check cannot do arithmetic (see dumb reviews below.)

although i was impressed by the sorroundings and food, that tottally didn't make up for the poor quality in service. the waitress made me feel as though i didn't belong there. i wonder if we had the same waitress as the other bad reviews?

The food was really good except for the glorified eggo waffle my kid ordered. It was thin and hard and seemed like it had just been thawed out.

The waitress was AWFUL.

She poured coffee on our hands, ignored our request for another chair and I had to eat while holding my plate. She acted offended when asked for the juice and toast she had forgotten. She also rolled her eyes at us several times.

We won't be going back.

Between 5 adults, whom almost all were on seperate bills, we decided not to tip which is something I have only done one other time. The service was the worst! We were ignored and sneered at by our waitress who acted like we were personally insulting her everytime we asked for something. We were chased out by the waitress when we left who yelled at us and threw a tantrum becuase we didn't tip. She told us if we didn't decide to tip here that we could not come back. I wouldn't dream of it anyhow!

Juniors breakfast scrambles are superb. Big and full of goodies, they come with a generous portion of yummy home-fried potatoes and substantial toast. Only drawback to this place is it's hard to get in after the slackers wake up. So go early if you can.

Pros: inexpensive, big food, unpretentious

Cons: loud music, crowds and waits

Country Scramble - potatoes were way over cooked (throw those burnt things away). Waffle - thin and hard. Use a belgin waffle maker, just a little more dough and it will be softer. Minimual flavor on both orders. Serve customers in the order they were seated, not sidewalk tables first. Food was served cold, it's not time to talk to customers on the sidewalk and forget why your're there. Food slow, two cooks would be more helpful. Cookie looked like he wasn't going to rush for nobody. Go home to get filled up.

Cons: long wait, cold food, slow service

But don't tell anyone because it's just busy enough. Go after 10, before lunch on the weekdays. Linger. Drink coffee. Read the paper. And eat the best dang scrambles in town.

A typical breakfast spot in many ways, Junior's distinguishes itself by an ability to make nearly any dish vegan (no one will look askance at a request for a tofu scramble or soy or hemp milk with coffee). But should omnivores grow…
