This is a fun experience! Right next door to the Flying Pie Pizzeria, they offer individual slices at their concession and inexpensive movies that have been in the theatres for a while. If you go on Tuesday, you can buy one ticket, get one free or Monday's you can watch two movies back to back for the same price. Their site says babysitting is available too. Their chairs are comfy, the theatres are cozy and best yet NO PREVIEWS so definitely be on time!
This place is adorable- its blue lights jump out at you while you drive down Stark. The theatres are small, and the prices are more than reasonable- recently went up to $4. The movies are the same ones playing at the more popular pub theatres, but far less crowded. You can get beer and pizza here, too. Not bad at all! The inside lobby is beautiful, as well.
Very cool atmosphere! It's so wonderful that finally a business takes to heart ""family friendly"" - providing babysitting, reasonable ticket prices, comfortable seats (movies kids dig, as well as movies for more mature audiences without all the sound-effects of restless kiddos. The best pizza and a beer just top off the experience. Can't wait to try out the kids birthday party! One place that truly is family friendly without simply catering to children alone.
We enjoy the Academy Theater for our cheep movies & beer but the last 3 visits we have noticed how unwanted our business is. The staff seems very annoyed that we are there, and that they are there. I can understand the staff being stressed or having a bad day but after 3 times of being treated so poorly, I don't plan to go back. Simple customer service would do wonders. I see that this is the first review in 2 years....hope things can improve soon.
Pros: movies & beer
Cons: unfriendly staff, no customer service
Portland has such great cheap entertainment and the Academy is a great addition to the list but definitely stands out because its not only cheap, but its clean, modern yet retro styled, has good beer and food and plays a good variety of shows. They also offer babysitting although I haven't tried it. In comparison to the some of hte McMenamins theatres, this place has modernized seating that is tiered so you can actually see the movie and people are generally quieter during the film because if feels like a real theater. I love this place and wish it were closer to my house!
i love this place. good selection of movies, super-friendly people, great food and beverages, reasonably prices, comfy seats, never crowded, not too loud (most theaters try to make you deaf, i think).\r
if it has a drawback, it is the parking, but i usually find a spot within 2 blocks. also, if you need to park further away, head south. the walk in the spring and summer in amazing for gardens that carry into the sidewalks.
Pros: food, service
This 'second run' theatre is the best, better than the Laurelhurst. The only reason I gave it a 9.5 instead of a 10 is because of the parking, which is street parking. There is nothing I don't love about this place. Not only can you get pizza from Flying Pie Pizzeria but you can get tasty salads.....for those watching their waist. They not only have beer on tap, but hard cider on tap (being a non beer drinker, this I love). The theater's are very comfortable and easy to access. The whole place is extremely clean and well kept. The ambience is warm and inviting. Oh, there are no trailers before the movie. How much better can you get, other than the price being awesome.
Pros: Everything, except street parking
Cons: Only Street Parking
The following are things I really like about the Academy: No commercials before the film, just quiet music. Movies start right on time. All new amenities - sound system and video quality are great, and the seating is comfy - plus nice food trays that fit into the cup holders. Friendly staff. Pleasant neighborhood atmosphere. Good selection of food and drink at reasonable prices. My kids are too old to need babysitting, but even though I don't take advantage of this service, the Academy is my theater of choice for all the other reasons. I have pretty much given up on the megaplexes, now the only place that keeps me from seeing everything on DVD is the Academy.
Pros: Friendly, comfortable, new technology in a pleasant older space.
Cons: Parking is easy in the heating company lot behind the theater. I wish it were clearly posted in the lot that theater parking is ok.
I love the Academy! What could be better than a great slice of pizza, a cheap movie, and a good beer? The customer service is excellent!
Pros: Child Care, Beer, Pizza
The Academy Theater is a great place for families. We can take our 3 year old to see a movie and have babysitting for our 1 year old in the same place. The babysitting area is great and the staff are wonderful. I can also go see a movie by myself and leave the kids in the babysitting area. I love it!!
Pros: they usually have kids movies, they have babysitting, they are family friendly
Cons: the babysitting fills up fast on weekends
Love. Love. Love. That is all we have for the Academy. With a baby, we thought we would never go out again. Then we found this! Movies! Food! Beer! BABYSITTING! Heathy kids snacks! We want to come here every day. We are so grateful that this exists and tell everyone about it!
Pros: BABYSITTING! Clean, inexpensive, good food!
What a great little neighborhood find.\r
For $10 my son and I bought Two admissions, one medium popcorn, one medium soda and a bag of candy. \r
The seats are so comfy and the stadium seating is great.\r
Had I known they sold Pizza , we would have had dinner there too.\r
The theater is just beautiful...I'll be recommending this place to everyone.
Pros: Cheap, clean, friendly and great old theater atmosphere too.
Cons: None that I can think of.
wonderful seats, good pizza, delicious chocolates. The only thing I'd like to see is better beer selections- it would be great to have laurelwood or big sky or rogue or lucky lab beer.
First off, I'm really happy about the rebirth of the Academy Theatre. I went here when I was in high school. The restoration (lobby) is wonderful. The price is amazingly inexpensive (they could raise it to $5 and it would still be a steal). The babysitting is a terrific idea (tho the original theatre had a great cry room with a glass wall). Now...the disappointment--i realize the financial need to have mulitple auditoriums just to turn a profit. However, this practice of taking a beautiful one-screen showhouse and chopping it up into bland, shoebox auditoriums was a bad idea in the 70s. I wish they had really ""restored"" the place with the one screen. They could have done just as well with innovative bookings and other features (using it for corporate rentals, concerts, jazz offerings, student film showing daily, etc.). All of the nit picking aside, they've done a terrific job, multiple screens and all. At least it's not a Nickel Ads warehouse anymore.
This is easily the best money for your dollar in Portland if you want to see a movie. I used to like going to Bagdad and Keneddy School, but this theatre has everything those theatres have but BRAND NEW!
Cons: Parking, Beer Prices
I was very impressed by the Academy. The employees were pleasant, the facility clean, and the theater comfortable. I was suprised by the variety of food items available, which included juice, salads and fresh fruit for purchase. Very nice! We ordered a large popcorn which was the largest size I've ever seen, and it only cost $4.50. I will definitely be back.
Pros: wide variety of snacks, cheap prices, friendly people
Cons: not a thing
Excellent staff, cute interior, clean, and you can watch a movie with your beer or hard cider! The snack bar had a great seletion of huge organic chocolate bars! Loved it.
Pros: it's only three bucks to see a movie
Cons: kind of small screens...
This is a great place, the food is great, the prices are great but most importantly the babysitting is such an awesome offering. We are new to the area and don't have a babysitter yet. We have brought the kids here twice and they didn't want to leave either time. They had a different sitter both times and loved them both. If you are unsure of the quality childcare you would receive at a movie theatre, worry not. It will save you more money than if you had to pay someone to come to your house. It's really a great idea, I wish other places offered babysitting.
The space is lovely, the price is right, the food is good, the beer is cold, \r
the seats are comfy, the bathroom is super clean. My only thing (isn't there \r
always something) is that during every movie except one that I have seen in \r
that space, there are poeple who are talking FULL VOICE. Not sure why this \r
seems so ""okay"" at that theatre, but it hasn't driven me away yet. Too many \r
other great things going for it!
Beautiful theater, Great pizza and beer, Wonderful childcare area and attendant. When we picked up the kids after a 2 hour movie, they still weren't bored with the playroom! The cost of a movie and childcare comes to about the same price as a first-run ticket elsewhere, and there you can't get beer and Flying Pie pizza.
Pros: proce, pizza, beer
Cons: not the best movie selection
I love the price, and the small town feel of the Academy Theatre. We haven't used the child care yet, but the fact that they have it is very attractive. And it's just a family atmosphere in general -- for instance, when we were there the other day, the manager was carrying his child in a backpack! I love people who bring their kids to work. \r
Also, this theatre is so clean and comfortable! The bathrooms are nice, and the individual theatres are always nice and clean.\r
I recommend this theatre to everyone, whenever I get the chance.
Pros: Price, location, ambience
Cons: smaller screens, not-quite first run movies
Thanks mainly to the local McMenamins chain, Portland has many pizza pubs to choose from. The Academy is the greatest of all of them. Beautifully renovated, this historic theater now offers $3 movies, pizza from Flying Pie (the best in town, conviently right next door) as well as a selection of beer, wine and standard theater food. They have awesome new seats that recline and have trays that go into the cupholders to hold all your food and drinks! Also, the sound is great- 100 times better than most ""cheap"" theaters. Personally, I'd rather see a movie here than anywhere else in Portland, and that includes first run theaters. Kudos to the Academy!
Pros: Price, food, sound & picture quality
Extremely friendly staff. cozy seats, nice atmosphere, good price. \r
Only downside is movie selections are not too creative. But the awesome staff and all the nice amentites would draw me here over another $3 theater most nights.
Pros: super nice staff, handy location, rocking pizza
Cons: bland movie selection
I am from Oakland, California, and we have something similar. An independently owned theater that shows almost first run movies, serves pizza and allows little ones. But The Academy actually takes the kids for you and lets you watch the movie on your OWN!! The Parkway in Oakland just allows tiny tots into the theater. The Academy has taken a good idea, made it great and charges a very small fee. Plus the pizza is really good, the concession prices are really cheap and the people are nice. They also offer fresh fruit and other kid-friendly snacks for the little ones. I cannot recommend this place enough. The babysitting area is clean, well-stocked with a variety of age-appropriate toys and the sitter is also an owner and a mother herself. Go to The Academy, have a child-free movie, glass of wine and slice of great pizza, all while knowing your kid(s) is(are) safely in the same building having fun without you.
Pros: Everything! Regualr prices cheaper than matinees at big theaters. Big, comfy seats!
Cons: Nothing, really, except limited times for shows.
Sometimes they run out of pizza--but that's because it's AWESOME. And when they do, they'll bring it to you. Better than Laurelhurst by FAR. Best Brew-n-view in the city, FWIW. Mellow, but grown up, and no Pizzacato pizza--this is the REAL THING. Lobby is nice, not crappy, and the management is wonderful. I'm blown away.
Pros: Glam, mellow, comfortable
Cons: Um... there must be some.
This place is awesome! Beautiful decor, clean, cheap, great pizza & beer, healthy kid snacks, super friendly staff and most important (at least to me) childcare!! I've seen more movies in the last 2 months than I had the 3 years prior! I actually feel good about leaving my little in the playloft as the staff are so attentive, I have a hard time getting my little one to leave. Check this place out you won't be disappointed.
Pros: Inexpensive, childcare, good food
We went to The Academy and had a great experience. The atmosphere is beautiful, the theaters have great sound and visuals, plus they are extremely comfortable. The staff is exceptionally friendly and knowledgable, and not that it matters, but they are very attractive as well. The pizza from Flying Pie next door was delicious, and they have a varied selection of beer to fit any taste. All in all The Academy is a place I look forward to visiting again and again!
Pros: beer, pizza, staff
My husband and I decided to check out the Academy Theater this afternoon. We both had a wonderful experience there. The tickets were inexpensive, the service was great, the food was delicious, the sound was good, the seats were extremely comfortable and the bathrooms were spotlessly clean. The screen could be a litte wider, but overall this is a great movie theater!
Pros: great food, happy people, cleanliness
Out of all of the second run theaters in town, this is by far our favorite. The atmosphere is very nice. New chairs are both love seats and recline. Good movie selection and seems to have a fast rotation of movies. Great local beer selection, and flying pie pizza is awesome.
The only thing that I wish was different; their liquor license doesn't allow them to serve pitchers.
Pros: Seats, Movie Rotation, Cost
Cons: No pitchers
These people have done it so much better than any other discount theater pub in the area. It's brand new. They only opened in March. The place is really nice on the inside, the movies are cheap, and the selection of movies and beer are great. They even have organic chocolate and other natural goodies. I love this place! They have free parking in the lot behind the theater which is nice because it's hard to find street parking. I don't have kids, but they offer babysitting too. Just step inside this place. It's in an up and coming neighborhood (Montavilla) so you may not be in the habit of going to this neighborhood...but just check it out. You'll be really surprised how nice it is to the eyes and the wallet.
Pros: New comfy seats, Tray for everyseat, Parking Lot behind it
We had a wonderful experience seeing a movie tonight. It is great to see the return of a neighborhood theater. I look forward to many return visits and recommending friends and neighbors to support this new theater. It was great to see how busy the theater tonight. The atmosphere was what I remember from years ago when people went to a theater to watch a movie and respect those around them. Great experience.
Pros: Price, Friendliness
The Academy makes it a pleasure to attend films. Admission is a bargain and the food and beverage selections are a great option. The film selections are always interesting - a nice mix of art house and popular. The only thing that would be an improvement is finding parking immediately around the theater. But it isn't too hard to walk a few extra steps. Give it a try!
Pros: Affordable, Comfortable, concessions
What a great concept! Movies, beer, wine, pizza, sandwiches - all for cheap and all at the same time! Awesome!
I love it. It's clean and sooo 1940's and wonderful movies and wonderful peole. I love it.
fantastic place! very comfortable, good beers and food. they had to kick me out to make me leave.
The Academy Theater was recently reopened and given a beautifl facelift. This is not your ordinary 2nd run theater! Seats are far and away the most comfortable of any 2nd run theater in the city, in fact there is no theater anywhere in the city with seats as comfortable. Sound is awesome as well, and theaters are intimate so even on the smallest screen (of the three) vision is great. Pizza is available from next door's Flying Piue pizzeria, where they do not skimp on the toppings! Throw in the fact that they have babysitting, and for $3 a ticket, this is one of the best entertainment values the city has to offer. Go check it out!
Pros: Inexpensive, Comfortable, Great concessions
What a refreshing change! From the moment we walked into The Academy Theater we were instantly taken with the fantastic restoration, fun atmosphere, great energy. Note: Very yummy food. Nice nod to family friendly fare and films as well. So nice to go somewhere an adult actually enjoys as much as their child! Equally cool sans bebe. Keep it coming!
The theater is lovely, all the great charm of the 1940's beauty it once was has been restored! Big plus for good pizza, bigger plus for the great sound system and COMFY seats!
Pros: food, sound system, comfy seats
My husband and I never get out, but we sure did enjoy our evening at the Academy Theater! It is everything it says it is - food, drinks & entertainment!! We will definitely be regulars!!!
What a great concept - and equally great theatre. I felt like I was stepping back into the heyday of theatre. From the curbside ticket window, to the beautiful marquis, to the lavish yet relaxed atmosphere inside - I was in consumer bliss. I enjoyed the beer too!
The theater was very clean and nicely updated - I was especially impressed witht he bathrooms - great for kids!
I love it that I could see ""3 Burials of Melquiades Estrada"" and ""Failure to Launch"" at the same theater, with GREAT SOUND! Finally!
Pros: good beer, good pizza, good movie selection
This theater rocks!!! The theater is beautiful, parking easy, seats comfortable, food selection terrific, pizza great, beer.... hey it's great beer but best of all my kids had a great time in the day care. The care provider was A #1 and they can be picky. Over all we had a great time and will be going back soon and often. Thanks!
Pros: Child care, Food, Bevs
Theatre has great staff and family-friendly atmosphere. i'll be there EVERY time I come to Portland. Food's great too.
What a treat! My husband and I were able to enjoy such a great night ""alone"" enjoying a GREAT movie, pizza and a nice glass of wine while our children (3!) were in the babysitting area having a great time. We all went home after enjoying such a nice time and definately plan to be back. I told my brother about the theatre and he and his crew of friends were really impressed. A great place for everyone! Keep up the good work! A place well needed!

I have a three year old, so I haven't been to the movies in, oh... about three years! Who can afford to go? A babysitter sets you back ten bucks an hour and tickets are close to $10 apiece. By the time you figure in drive-time, you've spent $50 and haven't even ordered a soda yet! But the Academy has on-site babysitting that's only $5 per child! They also have pizza, beer and wine and their prices (tickets and concessions) are totally reasonable. Not only that, but the interior is really lovely - there's nothing else like it in Portland (that I've seen anyway!) Check out The Academy Theater - you won't be disappointed!
Pros: inexpensive, kid-friendly, beer and wine
Very cool atmosphere! It's so wonderful that finally a business takes to heart ""family friendly"" - providing babysitting, reasonable ticket prices, comfortable seats (especially nice for my grandmotherly body!), movies kids dig, as well as movies for more mature audiences without all the sound-effects of restless kiddos. The best pizza and a beer just top off the experience. Can't wait to try out the kids birthday party! One place that truly is family friendly without simply catering to children alone.
Pros: Friendly staff, Comfortable and clean, Family friendly
Cons: Too far away
This place rocks - a cool theater, affordable food and (adult) beverages and day care to boot! Finally, parents can go out without going broke!
Pros: affordable, clean, fun
