We get these bagels at work. They are decent. Good texture, some are kind of small. Some are larger. I don't know, they're bagels.

They got bagels. Very good bagels. Apparently the only place in Portland that makes real bagels. I don't know about that, but they are good.

I got stale bagels at Kettlemans, and when I tried to return them the counter person told me to get lost.

Pros: ?

Cons: Counter people are jerks.

I decided to try Kettleman's on a whim. Normally I go to Noah's Bagels which is okay, if not great. The girl at the counter was surly and rude, as if she would rather have been anywhere but there. Then, when I got my bag of bagels they were rock hard stale. Not even day old stale, but hard enough to pound nails. I had to throw away the entire bag.

My husband and I love this place. Their bagels are the best I have ever had. Their cream cheese is crazy good. Insane, fresh tasting, and very flavorful. I get the bagel sandwich with bacon, egg, and cheddar and then I order a small scallion cream cheese (THE BEST) and dip my sandwich in it. Definitely not the most healthy combo, but amazing. We haven't encountered the snotty service that some people have complained about, but maybe we've just had good luck. The coffee is good too, although they charge for refills which is kind of lame. The only cons I can think of would be the prices...they're a little overpriced but good enough that we keep going back!

Kettleman has some of the best homemade bagals in the northwest. I love the spinach bagal and there blueberry bagal. There always warm & creamcheese is my favorite.

(This review is for the NW location) Kettleman seems to help fill the void left when Coffee People and Tully's both left the NW. Even though it is primarily a bagel shop they have good coffee and a coffee house vibe great for reading and relaxing. The bagels and bread are great. The reviews regarding "rude staff" are simply isolated incidences as the staff has always been nice and welcoming the many times I've been there (and keep in mind that a bad experience with an employee can happen ANYWHERE!) The atmosphere benefits from the store being off of 23rd as it feels much more relaxed and out of the way. The interior is decorated very nicely and has a relaxing vibe and the outdoor seating in front of the store never feels like you are in the way of pedestrian traffic (again, a benefit of being off of 23rd!) This is my new hang-out and I hope it is here to stay. Give it a try!

Pros: Relaxing place to read, relax

Cons: a little expensive but is to be expected in NW Portland

I went to the Kettleman on NW lovejoy with a friend, and we loved it!! i had the locks and cream cheese bagel, my friend had blueberry cream cheese/bagel. Both were excellent. And, they give you plenty of cream cheese. I also got my husband hooked on it. He goes a few times a week for coffee and bagels. The service has always been very nice when we have gone. They have been friendly and informative.

The outside seating is also great for summer!

So I was really excited when seeing the new NW location, because it is near my work! I could grab coffee and bagels on my way to work! Hooray! When I walked in it looked very sleek, urban, modern, typical Portland vibe. Nice! I was super excited to finally check them out, until I walked up to order. The girl at the register without even looking at me or greeting me with a smile just stood there...there was a long pause I said "good morning" and ordered. Seriously what gives with the rude, "too cool" vibe in Portland coffeehouses/bagel houses? This is your job people! Stop acting so elite and/or miserable! I mean really you're a register girl at a bagel place-- uhum. I may go back, b/c the coffee was good and the bagel was ok and also what else is new, thats the way most people at these places act? But just being nice would sure set Kettleman Bagels in NW apart! Hope they try!

Pros: Decent coffee & bagles

Cons: Rude Staff, over priced

I have recently been away from my neighborhood and have returned to this new addition. I have returned three days in a row now and have found every experience to be on point. The product has been great and the service pretty close to perfect. I have not been to the other location, but this has a great design simple without feeling cheap.

I have specially like the version of a iced coffee called a toddy, though can only make halfway through one before caffeine has taken over my whole existence. I had the chicken salad today and it was exactly what i hoped it would be and several bagels for breakfast.

i understand how places can start off strong and start to sag after a while. I just hope they are able to keep the staff that i have dealt with so far, I think the prices are fair, specially from working in the food industry and seeing how much gas prices have effected every corner of my biz.

oh yeah, nice outdoor seating just off of 23rd.

thanks for reading

So I used to go to Kettleman?s a couple times a week?not anymore. They do have great bagels but bizarre service. The employees are clueless, confused, unmotivated workers. They act like you are putting them out when you go in for your bagel, and I have pretty simple needs when it comes to my bagel (toasted with cream cheese). Their prices have gone up several times, almost 40% since they opened.

I have been to this place dozens of times and almost every time the staff is compleatly different. I have been there and seen the owner straight up screaming at this poor guy behind the counter, and everyone who helps me, while friendly, look pretty unhappy. One of the girls was even crying one morning!

The food is only alright and the place is way over priced.

I ran into one of the girls I recogized in a coffee shop and she told me the place is not only awful to work in due to the owner being a awful, but the the place is filthy (pests, moldy and expired food, and harsh chemicals like Raid and extream amounts of bleach.)

She also mentiond the place not being up to Kosher standards despite what the owner says. Im not Jewish, but that seems totally messed up if it's true.

Needess to say, bagels are not important enough to give my money to a buisness like this.

thumbs down to Kettleman bagels.

I've been going to Kettleman's since they opened and agree that they have some of the best bagels in town. However, I don't think they treat their employees very well and keep increasing prices all the time so I've stopped going. I was a regular but I've seen two employees quit in very public ways while I've been there and have talked to others about the working conditions which they indicate are pretty bad. Last week's price increase was the last straw. After prices went up yet again, I asked the workers if they got a raise and the answer was "no".

A bagel , cream cheese and coffee was $2.89 when they opened in May 2007, .10 less than Noah's. The price increase last week brought this to $4.39. Prices have gone from 2.89 to 3.19 to 3.39 to 3.89 to 4.39. That is a little steep for bread, fat and coffee in my own to go mug.

If you go, take your time to ask a worker how they are treated. I think you'll find this isn't a business to support regardless of their bagels unless they change their ways.

Kettleman's is the ONLY place I've found in Portland that has bagels worth a damn... and that's including the newest "jewish" deli downtown. Not one place stands up to the beautiful chewy, bagel-y goodness that is a Kettleman bagel. I cannot believe that there has been only one other review thus far. Two kinds of smoked lox, the creamiest of creamy cream cheese, the thinnest red onion slices, delightful little capers and a REAL kosher dill pickle on the side that adds the perfection I have been craving since leaving the east coast a year ago. Kettleman's is truly Portland's best kept bagel secret!! Sssshhh....

Pros: Bagel perfection!

Cons: Sort of out of the way (depending on where you live)

Hands down the best bagels in Portland. There's no confusing these bagels with floofy round bread. Kettleman's makes crusty, chewey, dense bagels that need no toasting to achieve bagel perfection. Add to it a cream cheese creamy enough to stand up to the hearty bagels. The place is so good, I changed my entire morning bus commute so I could get an early-morning bagel.
