I use to work at JL's over 20 years ago, it was one of my most favorite jobs that I have had over the years. I moved to Co after I left Ok and have not found a BBQ place that compares yet! How sad that they have closed. When I was employed there Lil and Otis Hoover were the owners and they were great people. They really cared about their employees. Although the building was old even then, we thoroughly cleaned it everynight and it was never dirty. People from all over would stop in specifically for the beans and potatoes alone!. I remember people lined up outside a 1/2 block long! The people I worked with were so awesome Patty, John, Phylicia, Mary and so many others. It was a pleasure to work with all of you!

I use to work for JL's and I had heard alot of talk of the place. I didn't understand what the big deal was even after working there.Although, the Bean's and Bologna were the best!!!! The pickles that were left over guys?? yeah poured in a bucket that wasn't refridgerated, along with every other sauce and thing on the bar! Potatoes would sit for hours, that may be why they seemed unfresh or "sour"! Yes the place was clean when you walk in but go behind the wall and "Oh My!" The service EXCELLENT! I couldn't have worked with better people!!! I loved that job! But the owners!! They are AWFULLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!After the place being closed no one can get ahold of them. All Phone numbers have been disconnected. They won't give the employee's thier last paychecks and hav'nt sent out our W-2's. I am 22 years old and have a 4 year old little girl, yes I am struggling. I need this for my taxes. I have never had my taxes done before because I have been a stay at home mom since my daughter was born until last year. Well if anyone knows what I am to do please fill me in. I would be very appriciative of any advice. Thank You.

Pros: Best beans and Bologna ever

Cons: The owners!!!

Well, I have to say this wasn't the BBQ mecca I was led to believe it was.

I arrived 20 minutes after opening and pans of sides (potato wedges & fried okra) were already empty on the serving line - I had ask if they had more wedges before the server would get them. There were 8 adults and 4 kids in the dining room - not a rush of folks and certainly no reason the serving line could not have been kept up better.

The beef plate's beef was closer to roast beef and had NO smoke flavor at all. The potato wedges were room temperature at best, the pickles from the condiment bar were sour, and the Texas toast was cold. To top it off, I saw no pit and no smoke, nor was there any aroma of smoke - that should have been my 1st clue...

Terribly disappointing. Maybe it was on off day - I'll never know...

The place was clean.

They are about 3 miles south of Pryor on the east side of the road (some maps show them in town) -- N36.25552 W95.33366 ...

Well I have to say that there is no other BBQ in the world. A man once said that if he were to commit a crime and was put on death row, JL's would be his request for his last meal. They DO use real hickory wood for smoking their meat, not liquid smoke. People drive and fly in from out of state to eat there. Beans are to die for, sauces homemade, and the people that work there have been there a long time and you can tell they love their job. Great Atmosphere.

Pros: Everything!!!

Cons: Be prepared to wear stretchy pants. You will need it.

Well let me first start off by saying, whenever you can walk into a barbecue joint, off the highway and immediately see the cleanliness once entering that is an IMMEDIATE PLUS. But before that it helps to get hint of an hickory aroma as you walk up to and into the bldg. Now I've been to a few barbecue joints, but this one has a XL Sampler platter that is well below $20 that includes a sample of all their meats except the pull pork (don't know why but it's ok) and the other meats are woth it. The ribs were tender enough after the first bite your bottom lip may be holding on to the rest of the meat on the bone. The flavor was very good there was a nice rub placed on it, and different that most places. WHILE I HIGHLY recommend this site if you traveling the S.Mill St, if you are looking for smoke rings on the meat that you won't find. Which causes me to speculate on the use of liquid smoke vs. real hickory wood. Nonetheless, the smoked barbecued bologna is great as well as the ultra huge chicken fingers. The sauce is thin, and sweet with a great flavor, and the hot sauce is literally the same with an ultra kick but still a great flavor. Amidst the few cons....this is a place I highly recommend stopping at....by the way the service was A+!
