.

I worked out at American Athletic for several years and really enjoyed my experience there until I was recalled to active duty in the Marine Corps and deployed in 2002. I had a contract with AA and prior to my departure I carried an official copy of my orders in to the club and asked to cancel my membership until I returned, my deployment orders were for one year. Of note, my wife was also a member and we did not cancel her membership, only mine. I was assured by the manager that it would be taken care of and I thought that was the end of it.

A couple of months later my wife noticed that our credit card was still being charged for my membership so she asked the manager while she was at the club and he told her that she'd have to go to the main club and talk to the owner so she did. She carried a copy of my orders in to the owner and explained the situation to him and he told her that he needed proof that I was deployed. Uh, these are official military orders, that is proof. My wife asked him what he needed and he told her to have me give them a call. At that time I was in the desert in Djibouti, Africa which I'm sure you have never heard of but lets just say, it's bad. She explained this to him and he told her that he didn't want to hear excuses to which she responded that she would dispute it with the credit card company. He responded with, "I'll get my money one way or another".

My wife did follow up with the credit card company and had them put a hold on future transactions for that amount, remember she was still a member. The owner ran the card and it was kicked back so the owner actually re-ran the debit for $.01 less than the original transaction to get it through. I have to tell you I was shocked that he acted like this. I loved working out at the Surfside club and had been a member for several years. I understand that people make up all kinds of excuses to get out of their contracts but I had legit orders and ended up being deployed for over a year and serving in Iraq during that year. I think it is a shame that he acted like this and truly stole money from me. In addition, he lost a customer because I would not return to AA after that experience and I have recommended to my friends to boycott the club as well.

Bathrooms were dirty, machines don't work and class didn't start on time. The entire place seems unorganized.

Pros: None

Cons: Dirty and won't go back

I stayed at the Fairfield Inn in Myrtle Beach and they gave me a pass to the American Athletic Club for the length of my stay. It turned out to be a great gym!! It had plenty of machines (elliptical, treadmill, stationary bike and stair-climbers) plus free weights and weight machines. It's upstairs, so you even get a little work-out getting up there! The employees were gracious in showing me around and helping me find the right equipment for my work-out. The bathroom was beautiful (felt more like a spa than a gym) and clean. Lots of people were there at all hours.
