In ShortHoward Johnson's story began in 1925, with an ice cream stand that soon became a chain of orange-roofed restaurants, and eventually motor lodges. The Best Western Downtown is not really Downtown. They are located on Spring Street which is on the edge of the peninsula. You will have to either drive to the historic district or take public transportation (which is not always reliable).
The rooms on the other hand are really nice. They have just undergone a major renovations and the rooms are all brand new. We had a room of the Ashley River, but you have to ask when you make your reservations. They are reasonably priced, so when the Downtown is too expensive it is a nice alternative.
