With a name like "La Mesa Grill & Cantina", I was expecting a Tex-Mex place. Instead, I found a polite (if somewhat uppity) tapas restaurant in the middle of the Five Points region of Birmingham. The service was fine, no real complaints. The waitress did forget to bring my side dish out until my meal was almost finished (and still charged me full price), but she was friendly and right on task with keeping everything else running along fine. The food was good. I had the Cheviche Spoons for an appetizer (three different tastes - oyster, squid and fish). They were tasty. My main course was the Steak Provoleta, which came as sliced steak atop a piece of provolone cheese. The sauce on it was very tasty, but the deep-fried onion strings it was topped with seemed unneccesary. I ordered the asparagus and habanero hollandaise as a side...it came out late and was unimpressive. Overall, I spent about $35 for a meal for one. It was good, and I left full, but I think I'll explore some other Birmingham restaurants before I go back. It didn't truly grab me as a "must stop".
