This was my first time to a resort in MN. My wife use to come with her family every summer to Shady Rest so she thought it would be nice to spend a week at the resort with our family. Making a reservation was easy. Check-in was a little hectic because so many other cabins were checking in at the same time and the kids were way excided, we have 3 boys, ages 5 8 and 11. Saw the pictures of the cabin we rented and they were pretty accurate. They were very clean, modern, and roomy. I was use to going on vacation and dinning out for each meal so it was a little strange having to cook each day, but my wife Shari didn't mind. The kitchen was nice. We had a latge deck overlooked the lake. We were in cabin #4 and so we were next to the beach. The water was really high because of all the rains so there wasn't a lot of sand. During the day it was crowded and busy but in the evening we had more privacy. Every night the boys wanted to have a campfire which we had our own fire pit. After a couple of days, i started feeling like I could get use to this. We rented a pontoon for a couple of days. With the high water, the docks were barely above water so it was interesting parking the boat. The boys caught a lot of small sunfish, one big bass, and a fish that broke my oldest's line. He still talks about that and the fish gets a little bigger each time he tells his story. The resort is about 25 minutes from the nearest larger town, Alexandria. We visited there a couple of days. We did some shopping, went to an amusement park which was fun, and had lunch. Bugaboo bay restaurant is a fun place to eat. Overall we had a great time. My mom and dad have a motorhome and next year they are going to join us. Who knows, maybe we'll start our own vacation tradition at Shady Rest.

We really liked this place and we're coming back next year which will be our 3rd year. The cabins are great, not small and furnished with garage sale stuff. These cabins are really comfortable. The lake is great, very clean and the kids loved the beach area. They also spent a lot of time at the playground. The girls at the store were so nice, they remembered all the kids names. Dave and Heidi, the owners, stopped by a few times to visit. One night we sat around the campfire with them, they're very nice. We all were so sorry to hear their dog Vegas had died. The kids could not get enough of her. I hear there will be another one coming by next year. We hope to get more of our family to join us, they'd love it!

Pros: Family atmosphere, the beach, the fishing

Cons: Hard to come up with some, maybe more children organized activities
