We were at Tum Rup Thai for the first time last night. The occasion was a family celebration. Of the things we ordered, Chicken Pad Thai and Chicken Satay stood out. My wife was drawing comparisons with other Thai restaurants and exclaimed that the Pad Thai that she has ever had. It was really good. My daughter likes Chicken Satay a lot and she relised the dish like anything.

It was fairly late and both our kids were really sleepy. The check took a long time to come!! That apart, the experience was really worth the money spent.

Pros: Good ambience, great food

Cons: Service

If you like Thai food and a mellow, trendy atmosphere, this is a great place. The service was phenomenal and the food was great.
By the number of people who were coming in to pick up take-out in the hour and a half I was there I would assume that it's a very popular place and I was there on a Tuesday evening which I would normally expect to be slower.

We had heard some good things about this place from our friends and decided to try it out. It was Thursday evening, me and my boyfriend got their at 9:40pm. There was nobody at the host stand as we got in so we stood waiting as the restaurant seemed busy. We stood their literally 7-10 min as a couple of servers walked by without even acknowledgeing us. Finally i stopped one of the servers to see if someone could help. She left saying that a host would be back shortly. Few min later when i stopped her again as no one had come to assist us she had a big attitude and told us that they were done seating for the evening. I was just suprised to hear that responce........after waiting for almost 15 min this is the best she could do........Dint bother to speak to anyone else as this was outright rude.............WILL NEVER GO BACK AGAIN.

The decor is inviting and relaxing. The booths are spacious and comfortable, I think its suitable for a date or a group outing. The food is good, though I thought it was a bit on the sweet side. However, the food orders came out sooner than expected, maybe because I went during a Monday night? The customer service could definently be improved for such an establishment. Otherwise, my first visit was good, and I would probably go back.

Despite some of the reviews posted here we decided to give Tum Rup Thai a try for dinner last Friday night. We got there about 6:30 and were greeted promptly at the door by a Thai gentleman who took us to a table right away.( It was a huge booth) Our server was prompt and seemed to be quite knowledgeable about the menu. He suggested a few of his favorites which we tried. The beef jerky was out of this world and the Gold Bags were equally as delicious.
For entrees we had a Green Curry (excellent) and a Pad Thai which was some of the best I have had anywhere!!!!! We had a bottle of Malbec with our dinner which matched up well with everything. We will be going back for more!!!! By the time we left the place was packed and people were standing in the doorway waiting to get in so someone is doing something right here. Give it a try and I doubt you'll be disappointed!!!!!

Took a friend to Tum Rup for a birthday lunch this week. This is the first and last time we will go to this restaurant. Even though there were only 8 other diners it took 5 minutes for anyone to acknowledge and seat us. It took another 10 minutes to ask if we wanted a beverage. 15 minutes later, Gabe (I'm not surprised I saw his name in another bad review) took our order. The food arrived in a reasonable amount of time, but we quickly were thirsty, since the food was spicy, and were never offered refills. Gabe was no where to be found, so I had to go to the bar and ask for a box to take the food home. The girl was extremely rude. We waited and waited for the bill. The worst part of the experience was how sick I got soon after I got home! Spare yourself frustration and a horrendous stomach ache and pick another restaurant.

The only reason this restaurant got two stars from me is largely due to their delicious pad Thai. The service is tragic, and the management is even worse. I live less than a block away from Tum Rup Thai. I had gone there for a year before I finally called it quits. Each time I went, the staff grew consistently ruder. As time went by I became more and more disheartened. Finally after several charges for extra sauce I never received and putting up with the rude and impatient staff, I decided that I could no longer bare it. Then one night my roommate ordered the pad Thai - after smelling the delicious dish, I decided to give Tum Rup Thai one last chance. I ordered my favorite combo for lunch mock duck/ tofu pad Thai. I went to pick it up and I was suprised, I was charged nearly $15.00 for my pad Thai. When I asked why I was charged this much, I was told that I added tofu. Because I had never been charged extra for my half and half before, I was floored. The waiter haughtily said, "it is not my problem, I do not make the prices," and walked away. I stood there dumbfounded and a bit hurt. I was a regular and my roommate was a regular from the time the Tum Tup Thai opened. To make matters worse, when I got home, I realized there was 3 1/2 pieces of tofu, and a half serving of pad Thai (i.e. the cook gave me a lunch special serving and the waiter charged me full price). I just paid $15.00 for this! I was outraged, so I called back and told the boy who answered the phone what happened. He told me that Jack, the manager, would call me back when he got in. Jack never called me back... I dropped it because Tum Rup Thai obviously does not care about their customers. Why put myself through the head ache? This is all so unfortunate because the food is actually very good. The service takes the flavor, enjoyment and trust right out of the experience. If you want to go some where you do not have to tip, this would be the place. Delicious food - terrible service.

This is one of my favorite Thai restaurants in the Twin Cities. The food is amazing - the pad thai, spring rolls, green curry and red pineapple curry are all very good. The seafood they use tastes very fresh and is always cooked perfectly. I have never been disappointed with anything I have ordered here.

The decor is nice and the atmosphere is lively but can be quite loud if there is a big group.

The drinks are mediocre and sometimes taste a little syrupy although their version of the Bloody Mary is very good.

The service is good and I have always found the staff to be very attentive.

I went to Tum Rup Thai for a birthday dinner, and I had the best chicken pad thai I've ever tasted. The server said their pad thai is rated in the top 10 in the nation, and I don't doubt it! It was a huge portion that gave me two lunches worth of leftovers -- great value and delicious food. I'm already craving more.

I had heard good things about Tum Rup Thai and asked my girlfriends to join me there to celebrate my birthday. Our server, Gabe, came by shortly after we arrived and took our drink orders. At least 15 minutes later a different server brought half our drinks. We had to flag Gabe down to stop by to take our food order. We weren't in a hurry by any means put our patience was running short. We ordered apps and dinner...which came out at the same time. I ordered the Sweet Green Curry, which was really great but I had to ask the manager to bring my side of rice as it was not brought out with my order.

I think we saw Gabe one more time after that. He wasn't attentive, wasn't friendly and didn't get our orders all right.

Fortunately the great company and fantastic food made up for it. I'd definitely recommend going to the restaurant, just don't expect too much from the service...at least from Gabe.

We usually eat in at lunch or early dinner when we practically have the restaurant to ourselves. We like the food and the servers are usually helpful. We have always gotten attitude from manager/host Jack and we simply try to ignore him, hoping his tenure at the restaurant will pass before our patience. This last time he was over the top rude and would not accommodate our party of 6. Never mind he had several empty tables, or that it was only 6pm or that we were trying to work out some solution. Emperor Jack did not want his authority questioned. Thank goodness there are about 3 Thai restaurants in a 3 block radius and we were greeted with exceptional kindness and superb service at Chaing Mai Thai!!

If you're insterested in Thai food because its what everyone else is interested in, and you like granite bars, moody lighting, high-priced cocktails, Tom Rup Thai is the place to go, a restuarant as generic as everything else in uptown now.

Lazy service, below par food. If you really liked Thai, you'd only get Thai here if you couldn't get into the somewhat better Chiang Mang Thai around the corner.

Try True Thai in the Seward neighborhood or Grand Pad Thai in Saint Paul for more authentic Thai food.

My wife and I tried this resturant earlier this spring and the food was good but not great. The service was good but not great. If you need a place to go in Uptown give Tum Rup a try but don't make it first on your list.

We live in the neighborhood and we go to Tum Rup quite a bit, it is a favorite of the locals and we have met many of our friends there from around the metro area and friends who are visiting from around the country. We like to order 'family style' , its a great way to eat at Tum Rup. Usually a few appitizers for four and no more than three main courses for four..there is always plenty of food to go around..we have always
had great food and flavors. When we meet friends who drive, there is always ample parking in the lot behind the building, ( it's a pay lot, but it's cheaper than the meters and the other lots in the area).
Our favorites are the green and red curries, the whole steamed fish, and any of the salmon dishes.

I recommend the hard candy chocolate mints in the basket at the front, that's about it. If you want good Thai food, go to True Thai.

There was so much coconut milk/cream in our meals, they both tasted like desert. Not anywhere near authentic Thai. The fresh spring rolls weren't bad. Drink list aimed at the "young" croud (shots, sugary drinks).

Host had an attitude.

There was a constant line to the restroom. A restaurant of that size needs to provide their customers with more than one toilet per gender. . . . especially if you're serving them alcohol.

Service was good.

I have visited Tum Rup many times and I have had a great experience every time. The service is always nice, friendly and helpful. Our server always does a great job recommending dishes and letting us know exactly how much food we will need to order. I love to have a variety of flavorful dishes and the portions are large enough to share if you go with a group. For the most part, they are happy to leave something out if you don't like a particular ingredient. The specialty cocktails are great. I love the Thai-rone martini. It fabulous! The chefs pay attention to food presentation which makes the food that much more enjoyable. The mango with sweet sticky rice is my favorite desert in the Twin Cities. The fried bananas are great as well. They are breaded with a tempura type batter and covered with honey. There as sweet as this Thai experience!

I went to Tum Rup Thai for the first time today and found it disappointing overall. I have been to both Sawatadee and Chang Mai Thai before and find them to be better. Chang Mai is the best of them all. We ordered chicken Pad Thai and I think the noodles were under cooked. I could not chew them. It was like eating flavored rubber bands. The taste was fine but maybe too sweet. We also had the fresh spring rolls, and crab cheese wontons. Those were both good. Last we had Mangos with sticky rice for Desert. Not good at all. I have had it before many times and also once at Chang Mai and it was much better. The Mango had little taste and the rice was, well, too sticky and overdone.
The waitress was nice and friendly and quick for most of our stay. That was until the end when all of a sudden we didn't matter. Think she was busy with many tables. After we got the bill it took us about 20 minutes to get out of there.
With a little work they could become better. In the mean time I'll be going to Chang Mai Thai.

Although the food was pretty good, (minus the desert which I will get to later), the service was by far the worst I have ever experienced. Every step of the way the service was rude, slow, and did not seem to care how long they made anyone wait. All in all, the whole dining experience took us 3 hours and that was certainly not by choice! My friends and I now joke that Tum Rup Thai is the only restaurant where you may want to bring your own food with you as well. Also, I would definitely not reccomend Tum Rup Thai for a first date, just in case it is going badly and you need to get out fast! This is definitely not the place for that. If I eat at Tum Rup Thai again it will be for carry-out as I do not have the patience to wait 3 hours and be rudely served in the process.

I also wanted to mention not to order the banana desert! We ordered this desert because they were out of the three other deserts we asked about and also because our waitor informed us that it was similar to bananas foster. Let's just say it was not anything close! Not only did it include some weird sauce instead of ice cream, but it was burnt to a crisp and looked so awful that we all wondered why they brought us "chicken wings" instead of bananas because that was what it looked like. Unfortunately, it tasted perhaps worse than it looked and none of us could swallow the one bite we took.

We decided to return for New Years with a few friends, becasue of the amazing food that we got on my 31st birthday over the summer. We were disaointed from the moment we got in the door at 7:30 pm. Service was horrible, the server did not have a good understanding of the drinks we ordered, ie- a dirty gin martini- pretty basic, but it was made with vodka and no olive juice. We were given aproximately 3 minutes from the time our drinks were brought to us to see if we were ready to order- which open menus and no copnversation at our table should signify we werenn't ready. Once our orders were taken we had to sit in utter agany and listen to horrible 8o0's satelite music. We were disapointed that the beautiful decor was not matched by more appropritae music. We were also disapointed that Tum Rup was not offering anytype of New Years drink specials or a complimentary glass of champagne- in fact non of the servers, hostess' even mentioned the fact that it was new years eve. I could tell that some others seated around us were disapointed as well, some of even felt overdressed. OUr food was not nealry as flavorful as our first experience, in fact two of our guests stopped eating their food it was so undesireable. my pad thai was somewhat cold and appeared to have more bean sprouts and garnish than noodles and chicken. Although the room was not packed, our server seemed to disapear- infact she did'nt even bring our food, and the only time we saw her again was when we flagged her down for our bill. We each only had one drink, because we couldn't get anyone's attention long enough to oder another. In total 4 people each had one drink, two split appetizers and 4 entree's. Our bill was a little over $100.
I talked with some others about this horrible experience and they seemed to agree, service is horrible, order take out. I am sticking to Sawatdee for my Pad Thai from now on.

I love thai food and where ever I see a thai restaurant, I have to go in there. This had the best thai food among many-many thai restaurants I have tried in US. Went there two times and both time was great. People have complained about the service but both times the service was good. The place has a nice feel and very reasonable in terms of prices.

For appetizer/salad i tried Som Tam which was really nice (ask withtout the dry shrimp). For entree, I had my favourite thai dish, Chicken with basil leaves, cooked according to my likings (no vegetable, only chicken and basil - that's how I used to get in Thailand). They did a very nice job and it was great.. Now the best part - dessert.. Never had such a tasty dessert. I tried their Sweet sticky rice without the mango.. on my second visit. Had to get another one even though I was full (their entree size is preety good). Both, myself and my friend declared it as the best dessert we ever had. Believe me, you should not miss it. Its just perfect. Will go there soon:)

I love thai food and where ever I see a thai restaurant, I have to go in there. This had the best thai food among many-many thai restaurants I have tried in US. Went there two times and both time was great. People have complained about the service but both times the service was good. The place has a nice feel and very reasonable in terms of prices.

This place is great. I have been there several times and have always left happy. The prices are reasonable and the food is always delicious (and huge portion sizes- one entrée can feed two). Bonus- they have customer parking in back.

Yes, I probably only REALLY like this place because I can walk there. But, the food has always been good even if the service was sketchy. I went there about 6 times in the first 2 months they were open and things were a bit rocky on the service side. The more recent times I've gone the service has been better so maybe they were just finding their legs. I did take a group fo about 30 there and was surprised at how poorly some were served. Again, I attribute it to start-up pains. The food really is delicious - have I mentioned that yet? The Spicyy Cashew Chicken (or something) and the Bamboo stir fry are my favorites. The bar doesn't have a wide selection of brands/flavours so you might have to settle for something else. That's my only real critic.
That's my review. Try a taste.

We had the exact opposite experience - great food, great service, and no waiting. I would highly recommend this place for ambience, food, and service - dine in or take out. The wait staff were much more friendly than most places, and were very accommodating to any changes we asked for with our dishes. Their happy hour is a relatively unknown bargain too!

We ate here several months ago but haven't returned. Food was really good but service severely lacked. We (3 diners) waited over 20 minutes for a bottle of wine, 90 minutes for our entrees...never having even received our appetizers we ordered when asking after them so imagine our surprise when the main entrees came to the table. "This service" required several requests to the wait staff and management. Other diners were being served faster around us and it was likely not a kitchen issue. When we finally received our bill and not asked if we would like "comped" anything, the bill included the appetizers! The manager didn't even seem to care our experience was just "crap" and service was not up to par to the price we paid. Service is better at Wendys!
