The St Paul Grill is a great place to take out of town guests that want to see old school St Paul. It is spendy but the food was really good. Our server was very attentive and all around a good experience.

This was a pretty satisfactory dining experience. My meal wasn't amazing, but it was better than bar food which you find a little too easily around town. It had a nice atmosphere, and my waitress was pretty friendly!

The St. Paul Grill has been a long standing tradition for my family. The location right across from the Ordway and Rice Park creates a great atmosphere - the outdoor gardens are beautiful. Food, wine list, and service are all top notch.

I had dinner there after RNC and what a treat it was! Steak was perfectly done, sides were plenty to share, my wife's Halibut was second to none and the server was a pro. We asked to be near the windows and they set us up in a great booth overlooking the gardens; we couldnt have asked for a better spot. We let the staff know we were going to take out time and they went above and beyond to respect that while also being very attentive and right there when we needed them. We were there on an event night, and though parking can be an issue in downtown St. Paul, the St. Paul Hotel had valet available for us. All in all it was a great night, and I certainly got what I paid for. By the way, the chocolate dessert we had to finish off the night was great.

My husband and I returned last week and had a great dinner. The food is above average and they have a great wine menu as well as some choice single malt scotch selections. I do love the dark wood interior and linen clad tables. Do not come here if your sole purpose is to eat cheap. This is about dining and dining well. It's a very civilized atmosphere and we appreciate that. There is easy parking across the street at the ramp near Kincaid's. If you make it clear to your server that you will not be rushed they will honor that request. In fact, that is something I make clear in all restaurants and it is never a problem. Restaurants want their patrons to communicate their needs. We have also used them for business meetings and executive sessions and they have been more than accommodating. This place is a class act.

Pros: This reminds me of the old school steak houses I grew up with, like Chasens.

Cons: None

Just average. Steak was bland. Nice atmosphere and view. Candles and white linen tablecloths. A little too cozy. Best part of the meal was the mashed potatoes. Nothing special. We won't be back. Too much to spend for only an average meal. You could get the same kind of steak at Outback Steakhouse for a lot less money. Actually, Outback may be better.

I agree on the parking deal. They do not tell you that they will not valet your car in advance and you will end up 30 min late for your reservation. I agree with other reviews that the staff cannnot wait to remove your plate. I was still eating and all the plates of my companions were already removed. A major pet peeve of mine. Steak was good, they get a little over exotic with bbq sauce. Hash browns are great and salads are as well. Not the best for the price.

This was the best meal I've had in a long time! Great food all around! Service can be slow. You'll be lucky to get a table on a Friday or Saturday unless you have reservations. The bar wasn't too crowded, but was a little loud.

Now, this is not your ordinary restaurant & I wouldn't suggest going here every day. I consider this a "special event" restaurant. It's a fabulous place for that pre-theater dinner, a birthday celebraction, or just a special night on the town. The food is always fantastic, a little pricy, but you're paying for quality and quantity. The serving sizes are generous and the quality of the food is always top notch. I've never had a bad meal here in all the times I've gone. Wait service is excellent, always on top of filling drinks and asking if things are ok.

Pros: FOOD/SERVICE/AMBIANCE/SEE & BE SEEN

Cons: PARKING/GETTING A TABLE

Fact: St. Paul Grill - Valet parking is only for hotel guests when an event is taking place downtown, so if it's cold out, and let's face Minnesotan's - that's most of the time, then you and possibly your date will have a long frosty walk to and from the car after spending twenty + minutes looking for street parking or paying $25 for parking garage.

Service: Rush, rush, rush... Not that they are quick to deliver your order, instead they are quick to ask for your plate after slowing down. If you stop eating for a second to relax and chat, they will swarm your table. Gotta keep tables turning over. If you are on a date and wish to chat and slowly enjoy your meal, be prepared to be asked by several different people if you are done and if they can take your plate.

Food: Good food

The food was excellent, but the service had a lot to be desired. Our waiter was very dry, and never around when we needed him. The busboy who scraped our table in between courses was more friendly than our server. Get the filet mignon, and the spinach salad with strawberries. Delicious. We asked for a straw for our water, and were looked at as if we were aliens. We will go back, but be sure to ask for a different server.

Pros: Excellent steak, Awesome bar, Nice lighting

Cons: , Pricey drinks, Small portions for $

Had lunch with three friends. Made reservations and were immediately seated. Ordered our food, which was served quickly. Great food and good service. The only bad thing that happened was upon asking for ketchup, we never received it. I had the ceaser chicken salad, which was outstanding. Clean greens and the homemade dressing made this salad the best ever.

Pros: Nice private seating

I ate all my meals here during my last visit to the twin cities (two lunches and two dinners) and never once was disappointed. I could eat all my meals here forever. Service was great and the hostess position is much improved over years past. It will always be packed here so don't show up without a reservation to avoid disappointment.

We understand that others have had good experiences here. We did not. I had made reservations well in advance and let them know that it was our anniversary when we made them, however we were seated 45 minutes after our reservation. We had wanted a somewhat quiet table and after waiting over 1/2 hour, we were led to a table directly across from the kitchen entrance! When we requested a different table, there was a very cold response. In addition, after being seated, we received only sporadic attention from our server. For the price, it was a very poor experience.

This is not a great restaurant so do not expect haute cuisine. Chophouse standards are tasty: a pepper-crusted steak I had for instance is the best I have ever had. Prepared foods can be up or down. A Christmas dinner beef filet with sauce was delcious and prepared precisely as I requested it. Fried squid, however, were so greasy I could not finish them. They have since been updated and are better (but still not great). If you go, go for its lovely atmosphere and old-world service and if your meal is wonderful, so much the better. Bottled beer selection has been recently updated (things happen slowly at the Saint Paul), so at least this quibble has been addressed. But what happened to its charming bar manager Ken Awada? Turnover is not a good thing....

My family had reservations at 6pm, thinking it would be plenty of time to eat before a show at the Ordway at 8. Unfortunately, we were wrong in assuming such. We order at 6:30(!), and our food came at 7:30. It was tasty, but no one can enjoy a steak while scarfing it down in 15 minutes. Our waitress had no apologies. There are better restaurants out there!

I recently had the chance to visit the SPG on two occasions. Once for a quick dinner before a Wild game and another on the weekend with friends. On both occasions I found the food to be very good. For starters try the pepper chicken noodle soup - it's very tasty. The salmon entree is well-prepared and sides are good and big enough to be shared. The calves liver was also good however it was almost invisible beneath all the sauteed onions. All in all, the SPG remains a good place to have a nice dinner. That said, it is not one of the more creative dining experiences in town so don't expect much on that end.

You expect to pay a lot here, but you also expect a lot in return. Service was poor, host staff was worse than snotty, and the food was ordinary.

My advice is to stay away until new management arrives; there are many restaurants far better than this.

I surprised my friend with a lunch at the St. Paul Grill to celebrate her upcoming wedding. My friend loved the up class style restaurant. I loved the reasonable prices. Granted we did not order the most expensive items on the menu but did have filling, delicious meals at a cost of under $25 for 2. The staff even gave each of us a free complimentary dessert. I was also afraid they might frown on having young children at the St. Paul Grill, but my infant daughter was treated well by the staff. Thanks for a wonderful lunch that will remain memorable for our lifetime!

Took my girlfriend there for a special occasion. We had a great time. Got a window table looking over Rice Park at night time. Food was great. Ambience was nice. Service could use a little help. Don't know if waitress was having a bad day or what but felt like she could care less about her tables.
